Abstract
Regular physical exercise is beneficial to the body. Acute exercise causes oxidant stress in many tissues including the liver by creating an unbalanced status between oxidant and antioxidant levels. Analgesic drugs are commonly consumed to reduce the pain after exercise. Acetaminophen (APAP), commonly used as an over-the-counter analgesic, can cause hepatotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect and underlying mechanisms of APAP at subtoxic dose, which is given after the acute and exhaustive exercise on the rat livers. Male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were divided into 6 groups each consisting of 7 rats/group; Control, APAP (250 mg/kg, ip), Acute Exercise (AEx), Acute Exhaustive Exercise (AEEx), Acute Exercise and APAP (AEx+APAP) and Acute Exhaustive Exercise and APAP (AEEx+APAP) groups. Rats were exercised at moderate intensity or exhaustive on the treadmill and then received APAP. Tissue MDA levels were significantly increased in AEEx, AEx+APAP and AEEx+APAP groups compared with the control. There was no significant difference in GSH levels between groups. Tissue Sirtuin1 (Sirt1) levels of APAP, AEx and AEEx groups were significantly less than control. There was no significant difference between groups in VEGF levels. Liver damage score was significantly higher in all groups compared with control group. As a result, this study shows that subtoxic dose of APAP treatment alone or in combination with acute or exhaustive treadmill exercise can cause oxidative liver damage by affecting Sirt1 levels and without affecting VEGF levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Peripheral nerve traumas are common injuries in young adult population. The myriad of techniques and medications have been defined to obtain better recovery but none of them was proved to have superior effect. This study aims to determine the anti-fibrotic effect of the decorin on sciatic nerve injury in order to enhance functional outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS 24 12-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats (350-400 gr) were divided into four groups. The sciatic nerve was dissected and exposed; a full-thickness laceration was created 1.5 cm proximal to the bifurcation point and 1.5 cm distal to where it originated from the lumbosacral plexus. Motor and sensory tests were conducted before and after the operations for evaluating the nerve healing. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between DCN bolus and PBS bolus group. (p<0.0001, p<0.05) in neuromotor tests. Increase of the latency was significantly lower in DCN bolus and infusion group when compared with the PBS bolus group. (p<0,001). All operated gastrocnemius muscles were atrophic compared with the contralateral side. The differences between the averages in the sciatic functional index, the improvement of the DCN infusion group was 8.6 units better than the PBS group and 4.4 units better than the DCN bolus group. When the amount of stimulation was 10 mV at the proximal segment in electromyography, there was no significant difference between the DCN bolus and sham groups. (p> 0.05, p = 0.6623). CONCLUSION Decorin protein reduces the fibrosis and enhances the motor and sensory recovery both clinically and histologically. Despite the high cost, short half-life and production issues, this protein could be administered after the microsurgical repair but more studies are required to overcome the limitations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effects of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and its possible mechanisms in treating Primary ovarian failure (POF) model was studied with 4 vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD). MATERIAL AND METHODS Rats were divided into 4 groups (n = 7) as Control, VCD, VCD + ALA and ALA. POF model was induced by applying VCD intraperitoneally and ALA was administered by oral gavage as 100 mg/day to the VCD + ALA and ALA groups. RESULTS At the end of 42 days, ovarian and uterine tissues were received. The number of primordial and primary follicles were increased and corpus luteum and cystic follicles were decreased in ovarian tissues in VCD + ALA group compared to VCD group. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity in follicular cells was decreased in VCD + ALA group compared to VCD group. eNOS immunoreactivity and eNOS levels were decreased in VCD group and increased in VCD + ALA group while iNOS immunoreactivity and iNOS levels were increased in VCD group, decreased in VCD + ALA group in ovary and uterine tissue. Plasma FSH and LH hormone levels were increased in the VCD but decreased in VCD + ALA group. Estradiol level decreased in the VCD group compared to the other groups. The MDA values were significantly increased in the VCD + ALA group compared to VCD group. In addition, the levels of GSH values were decreased in VCD + ALA group compared to VCD group. CONCLUSION Alpha lipoic acid treatment of rats with VCD-induced POF had a beneficial effect on reducing ovarian damage by improving histological, immunohistochemical, hormone level and oxidative stress markers. Our results show that ALA is an effective treatment of VCD-induced POF rats.

Abstract
Maternal deprivation at an early age is a powerful stressor that causes permanent alterations in cognitive and behavioral functions during the later stages of life. We investigated the effects of oxytocin on cognitive defects and anxiety disorders caused by acute infantile maternal deprivation in adult rats. We used 18-day-old Wistar albino rats of both sexes. The experimental groups included control (C), maternally deprived (MD), maternally deprived and treated with 0.02 μg/kg oxytocin (MD-0.02 µg/kg oxy), maternally deprived and treated with 2 μg/kg oxytocin (MD-2 µg/kg oxy). When the rats were 60 days old, the open field (OF) and elevated plus maze (EPM) behavioral tests, and the Morris water maze (MWM) test for spatial learning and memory were performed. In addition, the number of neurons in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex (PFC) and amygdala were determined using quantitative histology. We also measured vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the PFC. In both sexes, the MD group failed the learning test and the MD-2 μg/kg oxy group failed in the memory test. The MD-0.02 μg/kg oxy group spent more time in the open arm of the EPM device and their locomotor activities were greater in the OF test. The VEGF and BDNF levels in the PFC were higher in the MD-0.02 μg/kg oxy groups than the other maternally deprived groups (oxytocin ±). The number of PFC neurons was low in all male maternally deprived (oxytocin ±) groups, while the number of amygdala neurons was low in both female and male maternally deprived (oxytocin ±) groups. Male rats were more affected by maternal deprivation; administration of oxytocin had dose-dependent biphasic effects on learning, memory and anxiety.

Abstract
Regular treadmill running during adolescence improves learning and memory in rats. During adolescence, the baseline level of stress is thought to be greater than during other periods of life. We investigated the effects of voluntary and involuntary exercise on the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, and spatial learning, memory and anxiety in adolescent male and female rats. The voluntary exercise group was given free access to a running wheel for 6 weeks. The involuntary exercise group was forced to run on a treadmill for 30 min at 8 m/min 5 days/week for 6 weeks. Improved learning was demonstrated in both exercise groups compared to controls. Neuron density in the CA1 region of the hippocampus, dentate gyrus and prefrontal cortex were increased. Hippocampal VEGF and BDNF levels were increased in both exercise groups compared to controls. In females, anxiety and corticosterone levels were decreased; BDNF and VEGF levels were higher in the voluntary exercise group than in the involuntary exercise group. The adolescent hippocampus is affected favorably by regular exercise. Although no difference was found in anxiety levels as a result of involuntary exercise in males, females showed increased anxiety levels, and decreased VEGF and BDNF levels in the prefrontal cortex after involuntary exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Migraine is a common disabling disorder of childhood and adolescence. Despite advances in the understanding of migraine pathophysiology, treatment remains a challenge. OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to investigate the production of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes in the brain stem of adolescent rats, using an experimental model of migraine, and the effect of sumatriptan pretreatment on the production of the NOS enzymes. METHODS Male adolescent (aged ~2 months) Wistar rats were used in the study. The animals were anesthetized using pentobarbital. The trigeminovascular system was stimulated by injecting a proinflammatory molecule, carrageenan, into the cis-terna magna of the anesthetized rats. The animals were divided into 3 groups of equal size: (1) the study group, in which the rats were treated with sumatriptan succinate 2 hours before intracisternal carrageenan injection; (2) the sham group, in which the rats were not administered intracisternal carrageenan injection or sumatriptan pretreatment; and (3) the control group, in which the rats were administered intracisternal carrageenan injection but were not pretreated with sumatriptan. In the control and study groups, the rats were euthanized using ether anesthesia 1 hour after intracisternal carrageenan injection. Rats in the sham group were euthanized 1 hour after intracisternal catheterization. Brain tissue was removed and endothelial NOS (eNOS), neuronal NOS (nNOS), and inducible NOS (iNOS) immunohistochemistry was performed. RESULTS Twenty-one rats were randomized into 3 groups of 7. The mean values of the immunolabeling intensities for eNOS, nNOS, and iNOS enzymes in the brain stem were significantly lower in the sham group compared with the control group (P = 0.001, P = 0.002, and P = 0.001, respectively). The mean values of the immunolabeling intensities of eNOS, nNOS, and iNOS in the brain stem were significantly lower in the study group compared with the control group (P = 0.001, P = 0.025, and P = 0.005, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In this experimental model of migraine in adolescent rats, intracisternal injection of carrageenan was associated with a significant increase in the production of NOS enzymes in the brain stem. Pretreatment with sumatriptan was associated with a decrease in NOS production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of methylprednisolone (Pn), which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, and pheniramine maleate (Ph), which is an antihistaminic with some anti-inflammatory effects, on reperfusion injury in brain developing after ischemia of the left lower extremity of rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-eight randomly selected male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups: Group 1 was the control group, Group 2 was the sham group (I/R), Rats in Group 3 were subjected to I/R and given Ph, and rats in Group 4 were subjected to I/R and given Pn. A tourniquet was applied at the level of left groin region of subjects in the I/R group after induction of anesthesia. One h of ischemia was performed with no drug administration. In the Ph group, half of a total dose of 10 mg/kg Ph was administered intraperitoneally before ischemia and the remaining half before reperfusion. In the Pn group, subjects received a single dose of 50 mg/kg Pn intraperitoneally at the 30th min of ischemia. Brains of all subjects were removed after 24 h for examination. RESULTS Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of the prefrontal cortex were significantly lower in the Ph group than in the I/R group (p<0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities were found to be significantly higher in the Ph group than in the I/R group (p<0.05). Histological examination demonstrated that Ph had protective effects against I/R injury developing in the brain tissue. CONCLUSIONS Ph has a protective effect against ischemia/reperfusion injury created experimentally in rat brains.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms responsible for the renoprotective effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) in gentamicin (GEN)-induced nephropathy. On this purpose, 26 female Wistar rats (200-250 g) were included and four groups were formed. The first one was the control group (n:5). The rats in other groups (n:7 for each) received 50 mg/kg twice daily intraperitoneal (i.p.) PTX, 100 mg/kg i.p. GEN and both GEN and PTX at the same doses for consecutive 8 days, respectively. Rats were weighed both at the beginning and end of the study. After the last dose, 24-hour urines were collected and the rats were sacrificed. Blood samples and kidney tissues were obtained for biochemical, histological, oxidative stress, and apoptotic parameters. Body weights were similar in all groups at the beginning of the study. Rats in GEN group had significant weight loss, tubular damage, and increased apoptosis, while GEN + PTX group had significantly better outcomes. Scr, urinary protein/creatinine, and TBARS levels were significantly higher and Ccr and SOD levels were significantly lower in GEN and GEN + PTX groups in comparison to control and PTX groups, but the levels were similar between GEN and GEN + PTX groups. In conclusion, concomitant administration of PTX provides renoprotection via suppressing apoptosis in GEN-induced nephropathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Erythropoietin (EPO) is originally defined as a haematopoietic growth factor, but also has anti-inflammatory effects through cytokine modulation. This anti-inflammatory and cytokine modulating effect has not been investigated for the treatment of asthma. We aimed to determine the beneficial effects of erythropoietin on lung histology of murine model of chronic asthma. METHODS Thirty-five BALB/c mice were divided into five groups: I; II; III; IV; and control group. All groups except control group were sensitised and challenged with ovalbumin. Mice with experimentally induced asthma in Group I received saline; Group II EPO 500IU/kg; Group III EPO 1000IU/kg; and Group IV dexamethasone 1mg/kg intraperitoneally once a day in the last five days of the challenge period. Animals were sacrificed 24h after the last administration of study drugs. Histological findings of airways were evaluated by light and electron microscopic examination. RESULTS All histological parameters of asthma in the group treated with a high dose of EPO (Group III) were significantly ameliorated when compared with the group treated with saline (Group I). In comparison to the group treated with low dose of EPO (Group II) and the group treated with saline (Group I), basement membrane thicknesses and number of mast cells were significantly lower in the group treated with low dose of EPO (Group II). All histological parameters were similar between the group treated with high dose of EPO (Group III) and the group treated with dexamethasone (Group IV) except higher number of mast cells in the group treated with high dose of EPO (Group III). Additionally, the results of all histological parameters in the group treated with high dose of EPO (Group III) were significantly better when compared with the group treated with low dose of EPO (Group II). CONCLUSIONS We found that EPO ameliorated histological changes of chronic murine model of asthma. Further studies are needed to evaluate the efficacy of EPO in the treatment of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) is one of the most common local side effects of current therapy in chronic asthma. New therapeutic options with fewer side effects and reverse chronic changes are needed. Curcumin, as a promising antiinflammatory and antifungal agent, could be a candidate of alternative therapy in asthma. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of orally administrated curcumin on lung histopathology, serum nitric oxide levels and fungal burden in a murine model of asthma and OPC. METHODS Thirty five BALB/c mice were divided into five groups: I, II, III, IV (placebo) and V (control). All groups except the control were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin. OPC model was established after the model of chronic asthma. Lung histology, serum nitric oxide levels and fungal burden were evaluated after 5 days of treatment with curcumin, dexamethasone, curcumin-dexamethasone combination and placebo. Evaluation of lung histology included subepithelial smooth muscle and epithelial thickness and number of goblet and mast cells by using light microscopy. RESULTS All histological parameters improved in curcumin group similar to dexamethasone group. Curcumin and dexamethasone-curcumin combination were also as effective as dexamethasone on decreasing nitric oxide levels. Oral fungal burden was significantly lower in curcumin-treated group than dexamethasone. CONCLUSIONS In our study we demonstrated that curcumin administration alleviates the pathological changes in asthma and decreases the fungal burden. Curcumin may have a potential effect on treating chronic asthma and decreasing the frequency of the OPC.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis which is the most common type of Candida infections affecting humans, is most frequently caused by C.albicans. Immune response of the host, as well as a variety of virulence factors of the causative agent, play important roles in the development of Candida infections. The colonization rate of Candida in the oral cavity of healthy individuals, is between 25-30%, however, this rate is reported to be increased in immunosuppressive subjects. In our study, we established an oral candidiasis model with C.albicans in healthy and experimentally immunocompromised mice and aimed to compare Candida colonization rates and histopathological changes occurred in the tongue and esophagus tissues of the animal groups. A total of 21 BALB/c mice were grouped as control (Group 1; n= 7), healthy (Group 2; n= 7) and immunocompromised (Group 3; n= 7) groups. Immunosuppression in mice was performed by subcutaneous injection of prednisolone. For experimental oral candidiasis, cotton swab impregnated with C.albicans strains which did not have acid proteinase and phospholipase enzyme activity, no biofilm production, and sensitive to fluconazole and amphotericin B, were used. In the control group, physiological saline solution was used instead of C.albicans strain. In the forth day of experimental oral candidiasis model swab samples taken from the dorsal tongue surface of mice were evaluated by quantitative cultivation method. No yeast colonies were detected in Group 1 while more significant number of yeast colonies were observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p= 0.002). Tongue and esophagus tissues of mice were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid schiff staining and evaluated in terms of inflammatory response, abscess formation, vascular congestion, vasodilation and for the presence of yeast and hyphae. When the inflammation in esophagus was considered, statistically significant difference was determined between group 1 and group 3 (p= 0.023), however, no difference was detected between group 2 and 3 (p= 0.107). The level of inflammation in tongue tissue exhibited no difference between groups 2 and 3 (p= 0.317) while the difference was significant when these groups were compared to the control group (p= 0.00, p= 0.002, respectively). Similarly, the level of congestion in tongue tissue exhibited no difference between groups 2 and 3, however, the difference was significant when compared to the control group. To enlighten the relation between host immune status and oral candidiasis caused by C. albicans, further larger-scale studies also concerning the various virulence factors of the infectious agent, should be conducted by the use of experimental animal models which may successfully guide us in this regard.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze cases and determine the clinical significance of a prenatally detected single umbilical artery (SUA) in our population. MATERIALS AND METHODS All second and third trimester sonographic examinations carried out between January 2004 and September 2007 in our perinatology unit were reviewed. The postnatal results of the fetuses with SUA were obtained from the medical records and the patients. RESULTS From a total of 5,620 pregnant patients who were examined by ultrasound (US) scan between 15-36 weeks, a single umbilical artery was found in 45 cases, representing an incidence of 0.8%. Of these, 20 (45%) also presented with other malformations. There were six neonatal deaths, one fetal demise, and six terminations of pregnancy due to severe malformations in this group. Three cases with associated anomalies underwent surgery and one case required intensive care in the neonatal period. The only cytogenetic abnormality was trisomy 18 in one case. Six of 45 fetuses (13%) with single umbilical arteries had abnormal echocardiographic findings. In two of the fetuses associated anomalies (cleft palate and esophageal atresia) were detected after birth. In pregnancies without associated anomalies no aneuploidy was found and they were completely normal at birth and during the neonatal period. CONCLUSIONS Scanning the umbilical cord is one of the essential parts of US examination. As the rate of cardiac malformations seen with single umbilical arteries is high, fetal echocardiography should be performed in suspected cases. The newborn should be reexamined immediately after birth due to the possibility of undetected anomalies.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to determine the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) on cyclosporine (CsA) nephrotoxicity. Twenty-six female Wistar rats were injected with 15 mg/kg subcutaneous CsA and intraperitoneal saline/rhEPO for 28 days. Four groups were formed: Group 1 (n = 5), a control group; Group 2 (n = 7), CsA + saline; Group 3 (n = 7), CsA + low dose (20 U/kg per day) rhEPO; Group 4 (n = 7), CsA + high dose (100 U/kg per day) rhEPO. Body weights, creatinine clearance, urinary protein/creatinine, hematocrit, serum creatinine levels, histopathological parameters, apoptosis and lipid peroxidation tests were compared between the three groups. Body weights and renal functions were similar in Groups 2, 3 and 4 rats but significantly lower than the values found for the control group at the end of the study. The hematocrit was significantly different between the four groups, showing a positive association with the strength of the injected rhEPO doses. Tubular and arteriolar damage was significantly lower in Groups 3 and 4 rats than in Group 2 rats, while chronic changes were similar between the three groups. TUNEL-positive cells and thiobabarbituric acid reacting substance (TBARS) levels were significantly higher in Group 2 rats, whereas superoxide dismutase levels were significantly lower in Group 2 rats than in those of the other three groups. Low or high dose rhEPO had no significant protective effects on body weight, renal functions, chronic fibrotic changes, but both doses reduced tubular and arteriolar changes, apoptotis and oxidative stress.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate the immunoreactivities for NOS enzymes in frontal cortex and meningeal vessels after chemical stimulation of the subarachnoid space of adolescent rats and the effect of sumatriptan pre-treatment on the immunoreactivities of the NOS enzymes. Male adolescent Wistar rats were used. Rats in group 1 did not taken intracisternal injection. Rats in group 2 were taken intracisternal autologous blood injection, but no sumatriptan pre-treatment. Rats in group 3 were taken intracisternal autologous blood injection, but they were taken sumatriptan pre-treatment. Tissue samples were investigated for the presence of NOS immunoreactivity. The mean values of immunolabeling intensities for NOS enzymes in frontal cortex and meningeal vessels were significantly increased in group 2 compared to group 1. The mean values of immunolabeling intensities for NOS enzymes in frontal cortex and meningeal vessels were significantly reduced in group 3 compared to group 2. These results suggest that, chemical stimulation of the subarachnoid space increased the immunoreactivities of NOS enzymes in the brain of adolescent rats. The increased NOS immunoreactivities could be antagonized by pre-treatment with sumatriptan.

Abstract
Oxidative stress may play a major role in the aging process and associated cognitive decline. Therefore, antioxidant treatment may alleviate age-related impairment in spatial memory. Cognitive impairment could also involve the age-related morphological alterations of the hippocampal formation. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the effects of deprenyl, an irreversible monoamine-oxidase B inhibitor, on spatial memory by oxidant stress and on the total number of neurons in the hippocampus CA1 region of aged male rats. In this study, 24-month-old male rats were used. Rats were divided into control and experimental groups which received an injection of deprenyl for 21 days. Learning experiments were performed for six days in the Morris water maze. Spatial learning was significantly better in deprenyl-treated rats compared to saline-treated rats. Deprenyl treatment elicited a significant decrease of lipid peroxidation in the prefrontal cortex, striatum and hippocampus regions and a significant increase of glutathione peroxidase activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. It was observed that deprenyl had no effect on superoxide dismutase activity. The total number of neurons in the hippocampus CA1 region was significantly higher in the deprenyl group than in the control group. In conclusion, we demonstrated that deprenyl increases spatial memory performance in aged male rats and this increase may be related to suppression of lipid peroxidation and alleviation of the age-related decrease of the number of neurons in the hippocampus. The results of such studies may be useful in pharmacological alleviation of the aging process.

Abstract
Melatonin has recently been suggested as an antioxidant that may protect neurons from oxidative stress. Acute ethanol administration produces both lipid peroxidation as an indicator of oxidative stress in the brain and impairs water-maze performance in spatial learning and memory tasks. The present study investigated the effect of melatonin against ethanol-induced oxidative stress and spatial memory impairment. The Morris water maze was used to evaluate the cognitive functions of rats. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), which are the indicators of lipid peroxidation, and the activities of antioxidative enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) were measured in the rat hippocampus and prefrontal cortex which form interconnected neural circuits for spatial memory. Acute administration of ethanol significantly increased TBARS levels in the hippocampus. Combined melatonin-ethanol treatment caused a significant increase in glutathione peroxidase activities and a significant decrease of TBARS in the rat hippocampus. In the prefrontal cortex, there was only a significant decrease of TBARS levels in the combined melatonin-ethanol receiving group as compared to the ethanol-treated group. Melatonin did not affect the impairment of spatial memory due to acute ethanol exposure, but melatonin alone had a positive effect on water maze performances. Our study demonstrated that melatonin decreased ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation and increased glutathione peroxidase activity in the rat hippocampus.

Abstract
In a previous study we demonstrated that acute footshock stress increased glutathione peroxidase activity in the prefrontal cortex and striatum of adult male rats. Adolescents may respond differently to stress as life stressors may be greater than at other ages. The present study examined the effects of the acute footshock stress on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in adolescent male and female rat brains. We demonstrated that acute footshock stress increased SOD activity in the prefrontal cortex, and increased GPx activity in the hippocampus in female rats. In males, acute footshock stress increased GPx activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Footshock stress did not change TBARS levels. These results indicate a strong role of gender in the response of adolescent subjects to various aspects of stress.

The present study examined the effects of the acute footshock stress on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in adolescent male and female rat brains. We demonstrated that acute footshock stress increased SOD activity in the prefrontal cortex, and increased GPx activity in the hippocampus in female rats. In males, acute footshock stress increased GPx activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Footshock stress did not change TBARS levels. These results indicate a strong role of gender in the response of adolescent subjects to various aspects of stress.

Abstract
Melatonin has recently been suggested as an antioxidant that may protect neurons from oxidative stress. Acute ethanol administration produces both lipid peroxidation as an indicator of oxidative stress in the brain and impairs water-maze performance in spatial learning and memory tasks. The present study investigated the effect of melatonin against ethanol-induced oxidative stress and spatial memory impairment. The Morris water maze was used to evaluate the cognitive functions of rats. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), which are the indicators of lipid peroxidation, and the activities of antioxidative enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) were measured in the rat hippocampus and prefrontal cortex which form interconnected neural circuits for spatial memory. Acute administration of ethanol significantly increased TBARS levels in the hippocampus. Combined melatonin-ethanol treatment caused a significant increase in glutathione peroxidase activities and a significant decrease of TBARS in the rat hippocampus. In the prefrontal cortex, there was only a significant decrease of TBARS levels in the combined melatonin-ethanol receiving group as compared to the ethanol-treated group. Melatonin did not affect the impairment of spatial memory due to acute ethanol exposure, but melatonin alone had a positive effect on water maze performances. Our study demonstrated that melatonin decreased ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation and increased glutathione peroxidase activity in the rat hippocampus.

Abstract
Increasing age decreases spatial learning and memory. Spatial learning is coordinated with different brain regions. Since the oxidative damage may play a role in the aging process, including the associated cognitive decline, age-related impairment in spatial learning and memory may be alleviated by antioxidant treatment. The present study examined the effects of the monoamine oxidase B inhibitor L-deprenyl, alone and in combination with estradiol, on spatial memory using the Morris water maze and oxidant stress in aged female rat brains. We demonstrated that co-administration of deprenyl and estradiol caused a synergistic effect on spatial memory. However, use of either deprenyl or estradiol alone increased antioxidant enzyme activities in brain and reduced lipid peroxidation. Therefore, positive effects of deprenyl and estradiol on spatial memory may occur due not only to their antioxidant activities but also to the different actions.
