Abstract
Feed efficiency and carcass characteristics are late-measured traits. The detection of molecular markers associated with them can help breeding programs to select animals early in life, and to predict breeding values with high accuracy. The objective of this study was to identify polymorphisms in the functional and positional candidate gene NEUROD1 (neurogenic differentiation 1), and investigate their associations with production traits in reference families of Nelore cattle. A total of 585 steers were used, from 34 sires chosen to represent the variability of this breed. By sequencing 14 animals with extreme residual feed intake (RFI) values, seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NEUROD1 were identified. The investigation of marker effects on the target traits RFI, backfat thickness (BFT), ribeye area (REA), average body weight (ABW), and metabolic body weight (MBW) was performed with a mixed model using the restricted maximum likelihood method. SNP1062, which changes cytosine for guanine, had no significant association with RFI or REA. However, we found an additive effect on ABW (P ≤ 0.05) and MBW (P ≤ 0.05), with an estimated allele substitution effect of -1.59 and -0.93 kg0.75, respectively. A dominant effect of this SNP for BFT was also found (P ≤ 0.010). Our results are the first that identify NEUROD1 as a candidate that affects BFT, ABW, and MBW. Once confirmed, the inclusion of this SNP in dense panels may improve the accuracy of genomic selection for these traits in Nelore beef cattle as this SNP is not currently represented on SNP chips.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the technical application of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) as a support to classical cytogenetic in numerical chromosomal aneuploidies studies in samples of amniotic fluid, chorionic villus, and fetal loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authois performed cytogenetic analyses in 1,409 patients (678 amniocentesis, 512 chorionic villus samples, and 219 spontaneous abortions) during one year. FISH molecular study aided traditional cytogenetic in 90 cases. These cases were indicated based on the diagnostic hypothesis of each patient or when no cellular growth was obtained. The authors standardized the FISH in discoloured slides. RESULTS They had 85% positive FISH in amniotic fluid, 70% in chorionic villus, and 90% in abortion material using 13, 18, 21 X and Y centromeric probes. It showed 12% of altered FISH in amniotic fluid (100% trisomies), 10% in chorionic'villus (50% trisomy and 50% X - monosomy), and 22% in abortion material (50% trisomy, 25% X-monosomy, and 25% triploidy). FISH and cytogenetic analysis confirmed the results. CONCLUSION This technique revolutionized clinical and research applications of cytogenetics. In this particular paper, FISH was a valuable and reliable technique to promptly identify rapid detection of aneuploidies in interphase cells, metaphase spread and paraffin-embedded samples. It is hoped that, in the future, the economic viability of array CGH and FISH, with the decreasing cost of testing and their genomics advantages can be incorporated as routine and customized in the approach of prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Aleurites moluccana L. (Willd) Euforbiaceae is a native tree of Indonesia and India that has become acclimatized and well-adapted to the South and Southwest of Brazil. It is commonly used in traditional medicine to treat pain, fever, inflammation, asthma, hepatitis, headache, gastric ulcer, cuts, skin sores and other ailments. The oral antinociceptive effects of standardized 70:30 (v/v) ethanol:water spray dried extract of A. moluccana leaf, as well as its flavonoids 2"-O-rhamnosylswertisin (I) and swertisin (II), have previously been reported. AIM The aim of this study was to develop a stable and effective semisolid herbal medicine for topical use in the treatment of pain, inflammation and wound healing, containing 0.5 and 1.0% of standardized dried extract of A. moluccana. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical markers I and II were assayed by HPLC-UV analysis after extraction by matrix solid dispersion phase (MSDP) followed analytical validation as ICH Guidelines. The semisolid preparations of Hostacerin CG(®) vehicle containing 0.5 and 1.0% of dried extract of A. moluccana were submitted to stability studies (180 day of accelerated and long-term studies). The phytomedicine semisolid was analysed in croton oil-induced ear oedema model in mice, in the healing process, using the excisional wound model in rats, and to prevent mechanical sensitization following plantar incision in rats in the postoperative model of pain. RESULTS The MSDP method showed average recovery of 101.6 and 105.7% for I and II, respectively, with good precision (RSD<2.0%) and selectivity, without interference of the excipients. The formulations were approved in the stability studies, maintaining conformity after 180 day of accelerated and long-term studies, with variation<10% in the analytical parameters. The phytomedicine reduced the ear oedema in 37.6±5.7% and 64.8±6.2%, for 0.5 and 1.0% of dried extract, respectively. The formulation also accelerated the healing process by up to 50.8±4.1% and 46.0±4.0% at 0.5 and 1.0% of extract, respectively, and both amounts were capable of preventing the development of mechanical sensitization following plantar incision in rats. CONCLUSIONS The MSDP followed by HPLC-UV analytical method was appropriate for the quality control of the topical phytomedicine based on A. moluccana. The formulation developed at 0.5 and 1.0% of A. moluccana dried extract proved to be effective as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and wound healing in the pre-clinical studies, which is in agreement with the ethnopharmacological data.

Abstract
Despite extensive efforts, establishment of bovine embryonic stem (ES) cell lines has not been successful. We hypothesized that culture conditions for in vitro-produced (IVP) embryos, the most used source of inner cell mass (ICM) to obtain ES cells, might affect their undifferentiated state. Therefore, the aim of this work was to improve pluripotency of IVP blastocysts to produce suitable ICM for further culturing. We tested KSR and foetal calf serum (FCS) supplements in SOF medium and ES cell conditioned medium (CM) on IVC (groups: KSR, KSR CM, FCS and FCS CM). Cleavage and blastocyst rates were similar between all groups. Also, embryonic quality, assessed by apoptosis rates (TUNEL assay), total cell number and ICM percentage did not differ between experimental groups. However, expression of pluripotency-related markers was affected. We detected down-regulation of OCT3/4, SOX2 and SSEA1 in ICM of FCS CM blastocysts (p < 0.05). SOX2 gene expression revealed lower levels (p < 0.05) on KSR CM blastocysts and a remarkable variation in SOX2 mRNA levels on FCS-supplemented blastocysts. In conclusion, pluripotency-related markers tend to decrease after supplementation with ES cell CM, suggesting different mechanisms regulating mouse and bovine pluripotency. KSR supplementation did not differ from FCS, but FCS replacement by KSR may produce blastocysts with stable SOX2 gene expression levels.

Abstract
Resonant Rayleigh scattering from self-assembled one-dimensional molecular J-aggregate wires reveals a distinct dependence of the exciton energy on the width of lateral extension. For the J aggregates used in this study, strong in-line dipole coupling leads to a delocalization of the exciton wave function over several molecular units. Polarization dependent measurements of resonantly scattered light from the wires show that the exciton dipole moment is oriented perpendicular to the long axis. The experimental observations can be described by applying a quantization condition to the center of mass motion of the J-band exciton in the wires.

Abstract
The present study describes the phytochemical analysis and analgesic activity of Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes grown in Brazil. The results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract, fractions, specially dichloromethane, and a pure compound, denoted as curcumenol (1), exhibited potent and dose-related analgesic activity when evaluated in several models of pain in mice, including writhing, formalin and capsaicin. Compound (1), which seems to be the main active principle from this plant, presented promising analgesic effects, being several times more potent than different reference drugs evaluated in the same experimental models. The calculated ID50 values (micromol/kg, i.p) were 22 and 12 when evaluated in writhing and capsaicin tests, respectively, and 29 micromol/kg in relation to the second phase of the formalin model. The lack of effect in the hot plate test suggests that (1) act by a mechanism which do not involves the participation of the opioid system. The phytochemical analysis indicated that the chemical composition of the plant grown in Brazil is similar to that grown in other countries. The results confirm and justify the popular use of this plant for the treatment of dolorous processes.

Abstract
Adult male Wistar rats were bilaterally implanted with indwelling cannulae in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus. Once recovered from surgery, animals were submitted to one session of step-down inhibitory avoidance training (3.0 s, 0.4 mA footshock). Animals received a 0.5-microl infusion of saline, or of LY294002 (5, 50 or 500 microM), an inhibitor of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-K) family. Infusions were given 10 min before training, immediately post-training or 10 min prior to a 24-h retention test. In the pre- and post-training groups, the animals were tested twice: at 1.5 and 24 h after training, for short- (STM) and long-term memory (LTM), respectively. Pre- and post-training infusion of the drug inhibited both STM and LTM. Pre-test infusions impaired LTM retrieval. The effects can not be attributed to influences on locomotor, exploratory, pro- or anti-conflict behaviour, since LY294002 had no influence on elevated plus-maze behaviour. The results suggest that hippocampal PI 3-K is necessary for memory acquisition, consolidation and retrieval of the consolidation of step-down inhibitory avoidance in rats. This could be due to an interaction with the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor complex or with activity of the extracellularly regulated protein kinase (ERK)-Ras signalling pathway.

Abstract
A methanolic extract and two fractions (n-hexane and ethyl acetate) from Virola oleifera leaves and some compounds (one lignan and two flavonoids) were investigated to verify the analgesic activity by using the writhing test in mice. The crude methanolic extract showed a moderate analgesic effect (about 40% of inhibition in this test at 10 mg/kg), whereas n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions caused inhibition of 51.3 +/- 5.9% and 50.5 +/- 6.3%, respectively. Oleiferin-C (1), a lignan isolated from the n-hexane fraction, showed an interesting analgesic potential in this model when compared to two standard drugs, paracetamol (4-acetamidophenol) and aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). The ID50 calculated for this compound was 17.25 micromol/kg, with confidence interval between 13.7 and 21.3 micromol/kg, being about 8 times more potent than the standard drugs. The mixture of two glycoside-flavonoids, identified as astilbin (2) and quercitrin (3), also exhibited good analgesic activity, causing 63% of reduction of abdominal constriction in mice. These results suggest beneficial effect of this plant to treat dolorous processes.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to test the role of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) on both the short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) of the inhibitory avoidance task in rats using the inhibitor of tyrosine kinase, radicicol. Rats implanted with cannulae in the CA1 area of the dorsal hippocampus received a 0.5 microl infusion of radicicol (0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20 microg/ml) or vehicle (water) at different times after training and were tested for STM (1.5 or 3 h) and LTM (24 h). Additionally, one group received radicicol 10 min prior to the test for LTM. Radicicol depressed both STM and LTM when infused before and immediately after training and had no effect on either form of memory when infused 30 or 90 min after training. Radicicol also depressed the retrieval of LTM. Our results indicate that memory formation and retrieval in the hippocampus can involve PTK activity, but the present findings should be taken merely as a possible starting point for future investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart transplantation has been an option for the treatment of chagasic (C) cardiomyopathy despite difficulties concerning the control of rejection and reactivation. The parasite-host interaction under the influence of immunosuppressive therapy may affect the immunological response to the graft in a pattern different from that in non-chagasic (NC) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the major histopathological features in heart transplantation in C and NC patients. METHODS We studied 293 endomyocardial biopsies from two groups of heart transplanted patients, including 18 C and 15 NC. Both groups had identical surgical and clinical procedure except immunosuppressive therapy was lower in C patients. The histopathological parameters evaluated were the Quilty effect, rejection, C myocarditis reactivation, fibrosis, hypertrophy, and ischemia. In addition, lymphocytic cellular infiltration of myocarditis due to rejection or reactivation was immunophenotyped in the biopsies of both groups with rejection grades 3 to 4, in biopsies with signs of reactivation, and in fragments of the receptor heart with chronic C myocarditis. A search for Trypanosoma cruzi was performed in all biopsies in the C group in which lymphocyte immunophenotyping was done. We used immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. RESULTS The Quilty effect was present in 23% of the biopsies, involving 69.7% of the patients without a significant difference between groups (p = 0.509). Rejection was frequently observed in biopsies with the Quilty effect and the effect often recurred in the same patient. Rejection grades 3 to 4 was more frequent in the C group (p = 0.023). There were 5 episodes of Chagas' disease reactivation with myocarditis in 2 cases. The mean numbers of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, and the CD4+-to-CD8+ ratio were similar for rejection in both groups (p > 0.05), while the CD4+-to-CD8+ ratio was significantly lower in chronic C myocarditis compared to rejection in the C group (p = 0.043). There was no significant difference in ischemic damage or interstitial fibrosis in the groups but there was a higher frequency of hypertrophy in the NC group (p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS The histopathological features of heart transplantation in C patients did not differ from that in NC patients in regard to the Quilty effect, development of myocardial fibrosis and ischemia. However, the higher involvement of the C group for rejection grades 3 to 4 suggested higher susceptibility to this event. The similarity of the lymphocytic cellular composition for rejection in both groups indicates that C patients respond to immunological stimulus in a similar pattern as NC patients.

Abstract
Rats implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus or the entorhinal cortex were submitted to either a one-trial inhibitory avoidance task, or to 5 min of habituation to an open field. Immediately after training, they received intrahippocampal or intraentorhinal 0.5-microl infusions of saline, of a vehicle (2% dimethylsulfoxide in saline), of the glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist 2-amino-5-phosphono pentanoic acid (AP5), of the protein kinase A inhibitor Rp-cAMPs (0.5 microg/side), of the calcium-calmodulin protein kinase II inhibitor KN-62, of the dopaminergic D1 antagonist SCH23390, or of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor PD098059. Animals were tested in each task 24 h after training. Intrahippocampal KN-62 was amnestic for habituation; none of the other treatments had any effect on the retention of this task. In contrast, all of them strongly affected memory of the avoidance task. Intrahippocampal Rp-cAMPs, KN-62 and AP5, and intraentorhinal Rp-cAMPs, KN-62, PD098059 and SCH23390 caused retrograde amnesia. In view of the known actions of the treatments used, the present findings point to important biochemical differences in memory consolidation processes of the two tasks.

Abstract
From mollusks to mammals the activation of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) appears to be an important step in the formation of long-term memory (LTM). Here we show that a 5 min exposure to a novel environment (open field) 1 hr after acquisition of a one-trial inhibitory avoidance training hinders both the formation of LTM for the avoidance task and the increase in the phosphorylation state of hippocampal Ser 133 CREB [phosphorylated CREB (pCREB)] associated with the avoidance training. To determine whether this LTM deficit is attributable to the reduced pCREB level, rats were bilaterally cannulated to deliver Sp-adenosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphothioate (Sp-cAMPS), an activator of PKA. Infusion of Sp-Adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphothioate Sp-cAMPS to CA1 region increased hippocampal pCREB levels and restored normal LTM of avoidance learning in rats exposed to novelty. Moreover, a 5 min exposure to the open field 10 min before the avoidance training interferes with the amnesic effect of a second 5 min exposure to the open field 1 hr after avoidance training and restores the hippocampal levels of pCREB. In contrast, the avoidance training-associated activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (p42 and p44 mitogen-activated protein kinases) in the hippocampus is not altered by novelty. Together, these findings suggest that novelty regulates LTM formation by modulating the phosphorylation state of CREB in the hippocampus.

Abstract
Rats infected with the helminth Capillaria hepatica regularly develop septal hepatic fibrosis that may progress to cirrhosis in a relatively short time. Because of such characteristics, this experimental model was selected for testing drugs exhibiting antifibrosis potential, such as pentoxifylline, gadolinium chloride and vitamin A. Hepatic fibrosis was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated in liver samples obtained by partial hepatectomy and at autopsy. The material was submitted to histological, biochemical and morphometric methods. A statistically significant reduction of fibrosis was obtained with pentoxifylline when administered intraperitoneally rather than intravenously. Gadolinium chloride showed moderate activity when administered prophylactically (before fibrosis had started), but showed a poor effect when fibrosis was well advanced. No modification of fibrosis was seen after vitamin A administration. Hydroxyproline content was correlated with morphometric measurements. The model appears to be adequate, since few animals die of the infection, fibrosis develops regularly in all animals, and the effects of different antifibrotic drugs and administration protocols can be easily detected.

Abstract
This paper describes the isolation, identification and analgesic activity of a new biflavonoid from Rheedia gardneriana leaves, which correspond to I3-naringenin-II8-4'-OMe-eriodictyol (GB-2a-II-4'-OMe) (1), with a methoxyl group in position 4 of ring-II. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic data and confirmed by an alkaline hydrolysis. Its analgesic effect was evaluated in a writhing test and a formalin test in mice. It was found that this compound exhibits potent and dose-related analgesic action in both experimental models, with ID50's values of 4.5 micromol/kg against the writhing test and 8.2 and 6.8 micromol/kg against the first and second phase of the formalin test, respectively. It was several times more potent than some well-known analgesic drugs used as reference.

Abstract
Heart sections from 16 mongrel dogs, two normal controls and 14 infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, were submitted to immunohistochemical staining with either rabbit anti-cow S100 Protein monoclonal antibody or rabbit anti-T. cruzi purified specific antibody, using the peroxidase technique to investigate the participation of the interstitial dendritic cells of the heart (IDCs) in myocarditis of Chagas disease. Trypanosoma cruzi antigens were revealed as granular and dense deposits in IDC membrane in the heart of infected dogs both during acute and chronic myocarditis, but not in normal controls. Anti-S100 Protein labeled the IDCs, both in normal and infected dogs and a significant increase in the numbers of IDCs occurred in the myocardium, proportionally to the intensity of the inflammatory infiltration. These findings suggest that IDCs, probably by presenting T. cruzi antigens to immune-competent cells, play an important role in the pathogenesis of Chagas disease.

Abstract
Experimental pipestem fibrosis of the liver developed more frequently (69.2%) in mice submitted to repeated infections with Schistosoma mansoni, than with single infection (11.1%). The counting of eggs in the liver revealed no significant differences between the two experimental groups. Although the reason why multiple infections favor the development of pipestem fibrosis has not been elucidated, the data obtained represent an experimental support to clinico-epidemiological claims that repeated infections play a role in pathogenesis of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis

Abstract
The antinociceptive effects of morusin (1), the main prenylflavonoid present in the Morus nigra root barks have been investigated in classical models of pain in mice. The results showed that 1 exhibits a promising antinociceptive or analgesic profile by the intraperitoneal route, being more potent than some standard drugs used as reference. The mechanism by which the morusin exerts antinociceptive activity still remains undetermined, but our results strongly suggest that it involves the participation of the opioid system.

Abstract
This paper describes the antinociceptive action of 13,118-binaringenin (GB-1a), a biflavonoid isolated from Clusia columnaris and present in several plants of the family Guttiferae, in a writhing test and a formalin test. It was found that it exhibits potent and dose-related antinociceptive action in both experimental models, with ID50 values of 22 mumol/kg against the writhing test and 28 mumol/kg against the second phase of the formalin test. It was more potent than some well-known analgesic drugs used as reference. Based on a hot-plate test its mechanism of action seems to be unrelated with the opioid receptors.

Abstract
Ipomoea pes-caprae is a medicinal plant used in many countries for the treatment of several ailments, including inflammatory and algesic processes. The present study describes the antinociceptive effects of the methanolic extract and two fractions obtained from aerial parts of this plant. The results indicated that both methanolic extract and two fractions (ethyl acetate and aqueous) exhibited considerable antinociceptive activity against two classical models of pain in mice. Methanolic extract presented a calculated ID50 value of 33.8 mg/kg, i.p. against writhing test and also inhibited both phases of pain (neurogenic and inflammatory) of the formalin test with ID50 of 37.7 and 12.5 mg/kg, i.p. for the first and second phase, respectively. Preliminary phytochemical analysis suggested the presence of steroids, terpenoids, alkaloids and flavonoids. These findings support, at least in part, the popular use of I. pes-caprae to treat dolorous processes.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the possible effect of melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) on learning and memory by using the one-trial step-down inhibitory avoidance test in rats. The peptide was infused into hippocampus, amygdala, and entorhinal cortex. MCH caused retrograde facilitation when given at 0 or 4 h post-training into hippocampus, but only at 0 h into amygdala. From these results, it seems that MCH modulates memory early after training by acting on both the amygdala and hippocampus and, 4 h after training, on the hippocampus.

Abstract
We recently demonstrated the time-dependent impairment of long-term retention of a step-down inhibitory avoidance task in rats induced by post-training infusion of the specific MAPKK (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase) inhibitor PD 098059 into the hippocampus (HIP), amygdala (AMY), entorhinal cortex (EC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Here we investigate the role of the MAPK cascade in the HIP and the EC on both short- and long-term retention of inhibitory avoidance in rats, using three different doses of the MAPKK inhibitor PD 098059. Adult male Wistar rats were trained and tested in inhibitory avoidance and given an infusion of PD 098059 (0.5, 5.0 or 50.0 microM) at 0, 30, 90, 120, 180, 270 or 360 min after training. A retention test session was carried out at 90, 180 or 270 min after training (short-term memory, STM) and/ or 24 h after training (long-term memory, LTM). When infused into the HIP at 0 min, but not at 30, 90, 120 or 180 min after training, PD 098059 impaired STM. Intrahippocampal PD 098059 impaired LTM when infused at 180 min, but not at 0, 30, 90, 120 or 270 min after training. When infused into the EC, PD 098059 enhanced STM when given at 0 min after training and had no effect when given at 30, 90, 120 or 180 min after training. In this structure, PD 098059 impaired LTM when given at 180 or 270 min, but not at 30, 90, 120 or 360 min after training. All effects were dose-dependent. These findings indicate that the MAPK cascade in the HIP and EC is differentially involved in short- and long-term retention of inhibitory avoidance in rats.

Abstract
Splenectomized and sham-operated mice with chronic Schistosoma mansoni infection were compared for the development of periportal fibrosis (pipestem fibrosis). Although this lesion appeared less frequently in splenectomized mice, it also developed in the absence of the spleen. The time of splenectomy, spleen weight, presence of anti-idiotypic antibodies, the number of eggs in the liver, and the type and size of periovular granulomas in the liver as evaluated by computerized morphometry did not show statistically significant differences between the two groups. It is concluded that the role of the spleen in the development of pipestem fibrosis seems ancillary and that multifactorial influences, including worm burden, hepatic vascular adjustment, and factors associated with the biology of extracellular matrix of the liver, probably play a more significant role.

Abstract
Kennedy's disease is a rare type of motor neuron disease with a sex-linked recessive trait. DNA studies show a mutation at the androgen receptor gene on the long arm of X chromosome (Xq 11-12) with expanded CAG triplets (more than 347 repeats). We present three patients and one carrier among ten patients of a four generation family with clinical phenotype of the disease. The patients' ages ranged from 50 to 60 years with symptomatology usually beginning around 30 years of age. Patients had gynecomastia, testicular atrophy, muscular weakness, fasciculation, amyotrophy, absent deep tendon reflexes and postural tremor. PCR techniques of DNA analysis showed expanded size of CAG repeats on Xq 11-12 in all the three patients and in the carrier asymptomatic woman. This is the first Brazilian family with genetic molecular diagnosis of Kennedy's disease. This disease must be included in the differential diagnosis of motor neuron disease since it has a distinct prognosis and genetic counseling is mandatory to the carriers.

Abstract
Rats received, through bilaterally implanted indwelling cannulae, 0.5 microliter infusions of 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline2,3-dione (CNQX) (0.5 microgram), D-2-amino-5-phophono pentanoic acid (AP5) (5.0 micrograms), muscimol (0.5 microgram), scopolamine (2.0 micrograms), SCH23390 (2.5 micrograms), saline or a vehicle into the CA1 region of the hippocampus, or into the antero-lateral prefrontal (PRE), posterior parietal (PP) and entorhinal cortex (EC). The infusions were given 6 min prior to one-trial step-down inhibitory avoidance training in order to measure their effect on working memory (WM), or immediately post-training in order to measure their effect on short-term (STM) and long-term memory (LTM), 1.5 and 24 h later, respectively. WM was inhibited by CNQX or muscimol given into any of the cortical areas, by SCH23390 given into CA1, PRE or PP, and by scopolamine given into PRE or EC. STM was unaffected by any of the treatments given into PRE, and was inhibited by CNQX or muscimol given into CA1, PP and EC and by scopolamine given into PP, and enhanced by SCH given into CA1. LTM was inhibited by CNQX, muscimol, scopolamine or SCH23390 given into PRE, by scopolamine given into PP, by SCH23390 given into the entorhinal cortex, and by AP5, CNQX, muscimol or scopolamine given into CA1. The results indicate a differential involvement of the various neurotransmitter systems in the three types of memory in the various brain areas, and a separation of the mechanisms and of the regions involved in each. In addition, some of the findings suggested links between WM and LTM processing in PRE, between WM and STM processing in EC and PP, and between all three types of memory in CA1.

Abstract
The present work describes the antinociceptive effects of some fractions and two pure compounds obtained from the Wedelia paludosa, a Brazilian medicinal plant employed in folk medicine against a variety of diseases, including dolorous pathologies. It was found that such fractions as well as kaurenoic acid and luteolin exhibit marked antinociceptive action in mice using acetic acid-induced writhing. They were more active than some well-known analgesic drugs, such as acetyl salicylic acid, acetaminophen, dipyrone and indomethacin. The results confirm our previous studies conducted with this plant, suggesting that different chemical constituents are responsible for the antinociceptive activity shown by the extracts and fractions prepared from W. paludosa.

Abstract
Rats with cannulae implanted in the dorsal CA1 region of the hippocampus or in the entorhinal cortex (EC) were trained in one-trial step-down inhibitory avoidance and tested 1.5 or 24 h later, in order to measure short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) respectively. Several drugs infused immediately post-training inhibited STM without altering LTM: the D1 receptor agonist SKF38393 (7.5 microgram) given into either CA1 or EC, the beta blocker timolol (0.3 microgram) given into EC, the 5HT1A receptor agonist 8-HO-DPAT (2.5 microgram) given into CA1, and the 5HT1A antagonist NAN-190 (2.5 microgram) given into EC. These findings indicate that STM is not a necessary step toward LTM. Intraentorhinal 8-HO-DPAT enhanced STM and depressed LTM. The D1 antagonist SCH23390 (0.5 microgram) enhanced STM without affecting LTM when given into CA1, and blocked LTM without affecting STM when given into EC. Intraentorhinal norepinephrine (0.3 microgram) enhanced both STM and LTM, and the same drug when given into CA1 enhanced LTM selectively. None of the drugs had any effect on retrieval of either STM or LTM when given prior to testing. The data indicate that STM and LTM are differentially modulated by D1, beta, and 5HT1A receptors in CA1 and EC.

Abstract
Mice maintained on a low protein diet for 30 days and then infected with Schistosoma mansoni for 16 weeks completely failed to develop 'pipestem fibrosis' of the liver, whereas 50% of well nourished controls did. Usually mice with relatively mild and prolonged S. mansoni infection develop two different pathological pictures: one consisting of disseminated portal fibrosis caused by periovular granulomas concentrated at the portal spaces (pipestem fibrosis), the other represented by scattered hepatic granulomas. The reason for this dual response is poorly understood. Combined results from parasitological, histopathological, biochemical and morphometric data revealed that peri-ovular granulomas of undernourished mice were smaller, inflammation was less intense and there was minimal fibrosis in comparison with those of controls, which suggest that a vigorous host response is necessary for the pathogenesis of schistosomal portal fibrosis.

Abstract
Pathogenesis of schistosomal hepatic fibrosis ("pipestem" fibrosis of the liver) was investigated by means of the murine model. Although worm load appears as the main pathogenetic factor, alone it is not sufficient to produce that characteristic lesion. By comparing the findings in animals with heavy and prolonged Schistosoma mansoni infection, which developed or not "pipestem" fibrosis, it was observed that the lesion was more frequent in intact animals than in the splenectomized one. However, the size of the spleen, the number of recovered worms, the number of eggs per gram of liver tissue, the level of serum idiotype and anti-idiotype antibodies, the size and volume of periovular granulomas formed in the liver, all that failed to show statistically significant differences between the two groups. After analysing all these data, other factors, that apparently have been hitherto negleted, rested to explain the findings. Among them, the timing and sequence of the egg-induced intrahepatic vascular changes seemed crucial. The sequential development of intrahepatic portal vein obstruction, followed by the opening of periportal collateral veins and the continous arrival of schistosome eggs going to be lodged into the latter, appeared as essential steps in the pathogenesis of "pipestem" fibrosis.

Abstract
Lesions involving the sympathetic (para-vertebral ganglia) and para-sympathetic ganglia of intestines (Auerbach plexus) and heart (right atrial ganglia) were comparatively analyzed in mice infected with either of three different strain types of Trypanosoma cruzi, during acute and chronic infection, in an attempt to understand the influence of parasite strain in causing autonomic nervous system pathology. Ganglionar involvement with neuronal destruction appeared related to inflammation, which most of the times extended from neighboring adipose and cardiac, smooth and striated muscular tissues. Intraganglionic parasitism was exceptional. Inflammation involving peripheral nervous tissue exhibited a focal character and its variability in the several groups examined appeared unpredictable. Although lesions were generally more severe with the Y strain, comparative qualitative study did not allow the conclusion, under the present experimental conditions, that one strain was more pathogenic to the autonomic nervous system than others. No special tropism of the parasites from any strain toward autonomic ganglia was disclosed.

Abstract
The antibody response obtained after one booster dose of rabies vaccine prepared in suckling mice brains at Serviço de Saúde Pública da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro is described. Four prime vaccinal groups were used: group I, persons who had received 16 doses 10 years before this investigation; group II, persons who had received 5 doses of the vaccine 10 years before; group III, persons who had received 9 doses 5 years before; and group IV, persons who had received 16 doses 5 years before. One booster dose of the vaccine was administered to all persons involved in the study. Blood samples were collected before vaccination (day 0), then 7 and 30 days after vaccination. Antibody titres were determined by seroneutralization test in mice (SWM). The results demonstrated that all persons who had been treated with 5, 9 or 16 doses of the vaccine 5 to 10 years before had their antibody titres increased on the 7th and 30th days after one booster dose.
