Copy number variations in SPAST and ATL1 are rare among Brazilians

Copy number variations (CNV) may represent a significant proportion of SPG4 and SPG3A diagnosis, the most frequent autosomal dominant subtypes of hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP). We aimed to assess the frequency of CNVs in SPAST and ATL1 and to update the molecular epidemiology of HSP families in southern Brazil. A cohort study that included 95 Brazilian index cases with clinical suspicion of HSP was conducted between April 2011 and September 2022. Multiplex Ligation Dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) was performed in 41 cases without defined diagnosis by different massive parallel sequencing techniques (MPS). Diagnosis was obtained in 57/95 (60%) index cases, 15/57 (26.3%) being SPG4. Most frequent autosomal recessive HSP subtypes were SPG7 followed by SPG11, SPG76 and cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. No CNVs in SPAST and ATL1 were found. Copy number variations are rare among SPG4 and SPG3A families in Brazil. Considering the possibility of CNVs detection by specific algorithms with MPS data, we consider that this is likely the most cost-effective approach to investigate CNVs in these genes in low-risk populations, with MLPA being reserved as an orthogonal confirmatory test.

[Reflections on Three Episodes of Louis Pasteur's Life as Seen in the William Dieterle's Movie (1936)]

Despite the criticism and reservations made about him still nowadays, Louis Pasteur may be considered one of the most important scientists of the last two centuries in public health, even if the work of the numerous scientists who preceded him have largely contributed to the successes he obtained without following too much to the rules of deontology and ethics currently in force in the world of research and medicine. He has definitively put down, by his experiments, the "theory of spontaneous generation" in force since antiquity, validated that of "germs or microbes", enacted the first rules of asepsis, while inspiring those of the antisepsis applied by Joseph Lister, and developed a certain number of vaccinations in veterinary and human medicine, including the anti-rabies, the one which made him famous all over the world. All this was not done without difficulty and Pasteur encountered for a large part of his life the misunderstanding of his contemporaries and the hostility of the medical world to which he did not belong. The authors comment in this text the movie The Story of Louis Pasteur by William Dieterle, filmed in 1936, based on the knowledge acquired since that date and doing the part of the real and the fiction.

Revealing the diversity of Cloeodes Traver, 1938 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in the Neotropics: description of eleven new species from Brazilian mountain ranges

In the present work, based on material from distinct mountain ranges in Brazil, 11 new species of Cloeodes with hind wings or hind wing pads are described, illustrated and discussed. Among the new species, in C. aiuruoca, C. amantykyra, C. atlanticus, C. boldrinii and C. ioachimi, the apex of the fore femora in the nymphs is extremely projected (a characteristic previously found only in two species of the genus). Cloeodes guara and C. tracheatus share the presence of unusual large and dark gills. Cloeodes melanotarsus is readily distinguished by conspicuous blackish tarsi, C. lucifer by the bright yellow coloration of tergum I, and C. xyrognathos by blade-like incisors. Cloeodes magnus, besides being the largest species of the genus, with a body size reaching 12 mm, possess short maxillary palp. Comments on the presence of C. irvingi and C. opacus in Brazil are also provided. An interactive online key is provided for the nymphs of all the species of Cloeodes in which hind wing pads are present.

Ecotope effect in Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) suggests phenotypic plasticity rather than adaptation

Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is an important vector of Chagas' disease in both sylvatic and peridomestic ecotopes. Discriminating between these populations of Triatominae has been proposed as a means of investigating re-infestation rates of human dwellings. Geometric morphometrics have been widely applied in the study of Triatominae polymorphisms at species and population levels. This study characterizes morphometric differences between sylvatic and peridomestic populations, as well as between sexes in T. brasiliensis specimens from Jaguaruana, Ceará, in northeastern Brazil. No differences in either the shape or size of the cephalic capsule were apparent between sexes or ecotopes. However, the wings showed differentiation in shape and size. Sexual dimorphism was detected, with females presenting significantly higher values and conformations. Size differentiation was also evident, with sylvatic specimens being generally larger than peridomestic examples. These results indicate that differences in the wings of T. brasiliensis may be related to the existence of phenotypic plasticity, and variations in size and shape may be associated with different ecotopes, possibly as a result of conditions in each micro-habitat, such as temperature, relative humidity, food supply and density.

PGC1α gene Gly482Ser polymorphism predicts improved metabolic, inflammatory and vascular outcomes following bariatric surgery

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS

Bariatric surgery is currently employed as an effective approach to treat class III obesity and class II obesity with co-morbidities. Unfortunately, the general anthropometric and metabolic outcomes of the surgery are not homogeneous, and defining the eligibility criteria that allow for a more precise prediction of the outcomes of this invasive procedure will refine the selection of patients. Here we tested the hypothesis that the Gly482Ser polymorphism of the ppargc1a gene would predict different outcomes following bariatric surgery.

METHODS

Fifty-five patients (26 Gly/Gly and 29 Gly/Ser+Ser/Ser) selected for the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass according to the National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement criteria were followed up for 1 year, monitoring their anthropometric, metabolic and inflammatory parameters.

RESULTS

Patients with the Gly482Ser polymorphism had significantly improved reductions in the waist/hip ratio, fasting blood glucose, C-reactive protein, blood leukocyte count, serum interleukin-6 and intima-media thickness of the carotid artery, as compared with Gly/Gly patients.

CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION

Thus, the Gly482Ser polymorphism may predict a more favorable metabolic and inflammatory outcome for obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery, leading to a reduced atherosclerotic risk.

Farelo de algodão em rações para suínos nas fases de crescimento e terminação

Quarenta e oito suínos, de 63 dias e peso de 23,40±1,3 kg, foram distribuídos em um delinea-mento experimental em blocos casualizados, com três tratamentos (0%, 10% e 20% de inclusão de farelo de algodão -FA- nas rações) e oito repetições compostas de dois animais (um macho castrado e uma fêmea). Os blocos foram utilizados para controlar variações no peso corporal inicial. O período experimental compreendeu a fase de crescimento (63 a 106 dias) e crescimento-terminação (63 a 147 dias de idade). Em cada uma das fases as rações foram isonutritivas, variando, entretanto, os níveis de fibra bruta. Os níveis de FA não afetaram o desempenho dos animais. A avaliação qualitativa dos dejetos indicou que o FA determinou redução nos teores de fósforo e nitrogênio, mas apenas na fase de crescimento. Na fase de terminação o aumento na inclusão de FA promoveu aumento no teor de matéria seca dos dejetos. O FA pode ser utilizado em até 20% nas rações para suínos na fase de crescimento e terminação, porém a necessidade de inclusão de L-lisina e óleo de soja determina aumento no custo/kg de suíno produzido.

Could the bug Triatoma sherlocki be vectoring Chagas disease in small mining communities in Bahia, Brazil?

Searches for Chagas disease vectors were performed at the type locality from which Triatoma sherlocki Papa et al. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) was described in the municipality of Gentio do Ouro, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, and in a small artisan quarry-mining community approximately 13 km distant in a remote area of the same municipality. The latter site represents a new locality record for this species. Adults, nymphs and exuviae of T. sherlocki were found in 21% of human dwellings, indicating that the species is in the process of domiciliation. Prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in collected bugs was 10.8%. Simple predictive approaches based on environmental similarity were used to identify additional sites likely suitable for this species. The approach successfully predicted an additional five sites for the species in surrounding landscapes. Ecological and entomological indicators were combined to discuss whether this scenario likely represents an isolated case or an emerging public health problem.

Genetic polymorphism in Trypanosoma cruzi I isolated from Brazilian Northeast triatomines revealed by low-stringency single specific primer-polymerase chain reaction

Different molecular markers have been employed for typing Trypanosoma cruzi strains from endemic areas of Chagas disease. The low-stringency single specific primer-polymerase chain reaction (LSSP-PCR) has been a sensitive and informative technique that uses the variable region of kinetoplast DNA minicircles as a genetic marker, allowing detection of DNA sequence variation. In the present study, we analyzed the intra-lineage genetic variability of the T. cruzi strains obtained from triatomine feces collected on filter paper FTA card by LSSP-PCR. The hybridization of the PCR products with a probe for the subgenus Schizotrypanum and a clone-specific probe from Dm28c confirmed the subgenus as T. (S.) cruzi and respective lineages as T. cruzi I. Phenetic analysis showed the presence of three clusters that diverged by different coefficients of similarity. Thirteen T. cruzi I genotypes were observed circulating among Triatoma pseudomaculata and Rhodnius nasutus from peridomiciliary and natural environments in five peri-urban and urban localities of Jaguaruana, Ceará, Brazil. These data indicate the importance of the circulation of T. cruzi I genotypes among T. pseudomaculata and R. nasutus in different environments and the possible risk of Chagas disease domestic transmission.

The Brazilian Peritoneal Dialysis Multicenter Study (BRAZPD) : characterization of the cohort

The Brazilian Peritoneal Dialysis Multicenter Study (BRAZPD) was launched in December 2004 aiming to collect data monthly and continuously from a representative cohort, allowing for a continuous snapshot of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) reality in the country. This is an observational study of PD patients comprising follow-up from December 2004 to February 2007 (mean follow-up of 13.6 months-ranging from 1 to 26 months) in 114 Brazilian centers. All centers report data through a central web-based database. After an initial baseline retrospective data collection, all patients are followed prospectively every month until they drop out from the PD program. Total number of patients recruited until February 2007 was 3226 (2094 incident patients). Mean age was 54+/-19 years (37% above 65 years old), with 55% females and 64% Caucasians. The more frequent causes of renal failure were diabetic nephropathy (34%), renal vascular disease associated with hypertension (26%), and glomerulopathies (13%). The most common comorbidities were hypertension (76%), diabetes (36%), and ischemic heart disease (23%). Automated PD (APD) was the modality utilized in 53%. The estimated overall peritonitis rate was 1 episode per 30 patient-months (most frequently due to Staphylococcus aureus). The total dropout rate was 33%, mainly due to deaths, whereas 20% of dropouts were due to renal transplant. The gross mortality was 17.6% and the main causes of mortality were cardiovascular diseases (40%) and infections (15%). The initial results of this first Brazilian PD registry provide a unique opportunity to develop future clinical studies addressing specific PD questions in the Brazilian reality and context.

Lack of association of GSTT1, GSTM1, GSTO1, GSTP1 and CYP1A1 polymorphisms for susceptibility and outcome in Brazilian prostate cancer patients

The polymorphic inheritance of human drug-metabolizing enzymes, such as those encoded by the GST and CYP systems, has been implicated in both cancer risk and prognostic. In an effort to increase our understanding of the interaction between potential environmental exposure, lifestyle, and genetic factors in the predisposition and response to radiotherapy of prostate cancer patients, we examined GSTT1, GSTM1, GSTO1, GSTP1 and CYP1A1 genotypes in a Brazilian population. We studied 125 prostate cancer patients and 100 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients paired for ethnic and lifestyle characteristics. Lifetime occupational history, dietary patterns, cigarette-smoking, and other anamnestic data were obtained through interviews. Outcome was evaluated in 42 stage <or= T2a patients presenting a Gleason score <or= 6, PSA <or= 10 ng/ml, treated with radiotherapy and followed up for 12 to 34 months (15 +/- 8 months). None of the studied polymorphisms was found associated to prostate cancer risk either considered separately or in combination, in uni- or multivariate regression logistic analysis. Also, there was no association between genotypes and possible clinical factors of risk or any parameter of tumour aggressiveness at diagnosis or during follow-up. Patients' response to radiotherapy treatment was not associated to any genotype. In conclusion, our data suggest that GST and CYP1A1 genotypes are not associated with the susceptibility to prostate cancer or its outcome in the Brazilian population.

The influence of female gender on the outcome of endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair

PURPOSE

Women appear to have a greater risk of death than men after open surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The aim of this study is to compare outcomes after endovascular AAA repair in men and women.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From March 1994 to November 2000, 305 patients (281 men and 24 women) underwent AAA repair with use of endovascular techniques. Outcomes measured included perioperative mortality, percentage of procedures aborted or converted to open abdominal AAA repair, deployment success rate, angiographic success rate, major complication rate, and percentage of patients with endoleaks.

RESULTS

Patients of both genders were comparable with respect to mean age (74.4 in men vs 75.9 in women; NS). According to the Society for Vascular Surgery/International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery risk stratification method, men and women were also comparable in age risk score (0.60 vs 0.67; NS), pulmonary risk score (0.50 vs 0.83; NS), and renal risk score (0.28 vs 0.17; NS). However, the cardiac risk score was higher in men (1.31 vs 0.80; P <.05) and maximum AAA diameter was greater in men (57.0 mm vs 52.1 mm; P <.01). Eight perioperative deaths (2.6%) occurred (2.8% of men, 0% of women; NS). Proportionately more procedures were aborted in women than men: four (16.7%) versus six (2.1%; P <.01). Conversion to open repair occurred in four men (1.4%) and no women (NS). Deployment success was achieved in 96.4% of men and 83.3% of women (P <.01). Angiographic success was achieved in 84.1% of men and 80% of women (NS). Of 46 major complications, 42 (14.9%) occurred in 281 men and four (16.7%) occurred in 24 women (NS). Sixty-seven patients had endoleaks: 60 were men (22.1%) and seven were women (35%; NS).

CONCLUSIONS

There was no difference between men and women with respect to perioperative mortality and major complication rates. These findings indicate that being a woman does not adversely influence the outcome of endovascular AAA repair. However, women had a higher rate of aborted procedures. Precise preoperative evaluation may help reduce this problem in women.

[Effects of food deprivation levels on the oogenesis of Panstrongylus megistus]

The effects of various levels of food deprivation on the oogenesis of P. megistus was studied. Immediately after the imaginal ecdysis, six groups (GI to GVI) of 15 couples each were formed. Each group was fed as follows: GI -- on days 5 and 25; G-II -- on days 5 and 35; GIII -- on days 5 and 45; GIV -- on day 20; GV -- on day 30; GVI -- on day 40 after the imaginal ecdysis. After the established fasting period, all groups were fed fortnightly. Fifteen couples were in the control group (CG), which was fed on the day 5 after the imaginal ecdysis and subsequently fortnightly. GI produced more eggs, matings and fertile eggs. GII had longer life spans, higher fecundity and hatchings. GIII had a shorter life span, low fecundity, fertility and hatchings. GVI presented the least favorable results for all parameters, except for the pre-oviposition period. The CG had the best results in all parameters when compared with all experimental groups.

[Neurocysticercosis and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome: case report]

Report of a girl with the epileptic, hydrocephalic and encephalitic form of neurocysticercosis, diagnosed by cerebrospinal fluid and computed tomography exams, during her second year of life and an evolution with multiple types of seizures, prolonged periods of intracranial hypertension due to obstruction in the ventriculoperitoneal shunt, psychomotor regression and blindness until she was 10 years old, when the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome was diagnosed. Nowadays the patient is 16 years old and presents complex partial seizures with automatism not completely controlled with clobazan and oxcarbazepine, associated to left spastic hemiparesis, universal hyperreflexia, psychomotor agitation, self-mutilation, amaurosis and severe mental retardation. The association between neurocysticercosis and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome was first described in 1973 by Frochtengarten & Scarante in a Brazilian girl with a similar clinical picture.

Clinical aspects of neurocysticercosis in children

The purpose of this report was to evaluate the clinical aspects of neurocysticercosis in children from a Brazilian region. A retrospective study of 25 children with this neuroparasitosis was performed. The diagnosis was based on clinical, cerebrospinal fluid, and neuroimaging findings. The patients were predominantly male (72%), were 1 to 11 years of age (average = 8 years, 6 months), and most resided in urban areas (68%). The more frequent manifestations were epileptic seizures (72%), headache (60%), learning disability (24%), behavioral changes (12%), psychomotor involution (8%), and intracranial hypertension (4%). The neurologic examination was normal in 80% of the patients. Twenty-two children received only symptomatic drugs. Three patients underwent treatment with cysticidal drugs, one with praziquantel and two with albendazole, with complete remission of the signs in one patient (33%) and improvement in two others (67%). Of the 25 patients, 43.4% had remission and 47.8% had improvement. We emphasize the need to consider neurocysticercosis as a differential diagnosis in children coming from endemic areas and presenting with learning disabilities, behavioral changes, and psychomotor involution. The clinical aspects in most of the children from the Botucatu region suggest a spontaneous resolution of neurocysticercosis without the need for cysticidal treatment.

Life cycle and reproductive patterns of Triatoma rubrofasciata (De Geer, 1773) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), under laboratory conditions

The life cycle and reproductive patterns of Triatoma rubrofasciata were studied along with laboratory conditions for the establishment of a prolific colony. The insects were divided into four groups: two of them were maintained at room temperature (20.5 degrees C to 33 degrees C and 85% +/- 5% of relative humidity), the other two in a climatic chamber (CC) (temperature: 29 degrees C, humidity: 80% +/- 5%). The groups were fed weekly or fortnightly on Swiss mice. The females from the group kept in the CC and fed weekly had longer life span, as well as a higher number of eggs, fertile eggs and hatchings; the group kept in the CC and fed fortnightly had a shorter life span for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instars and a lower mortality rate for all instars. It was concluded that a constant high temperature (CC at 29 degrees C) is the most suitable condition for the maintenance of a colony of T. rubrofasciata regardless of the interval between repasts.

[HIV/tuberculosis co-infection: a request for a better surveillance]

The increasing endemicity of tuberculosis resulting from causes such as immigration, poverty, a declining public health infrastructure and co-infection by HIV/Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is leading to a change in tuberculosis control programmes. One of the main reasons for the resurgence of tuberculosis is HIV infection--the risk of tuberculosis is greater in HIV patients than in the majority of the population as can be seen from numerous research projects. The need for systematic testing for HIV infection in all tuberculosis patients by undertaking confidential HIV tests on admission to a tuberculosis programme is brought out. This measure would increase the number of cases diagnosed and provide data for better surveillance of the co-infection.

Agenesis and lipoma of corpus callosum. Case report

The agenesis and lipoma of the corpus callosum is a very rare association. We report the case of a 18-years old woman with rare epileptic seizures since the age of 6 years, normal neurological examination, as well as normal electroencephalogram. The brain computed tomography scanning and the magnetic resonance showed the lipoma and the agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Dipole reversal: an ictal feature in a patient with benign partial epilepsy of childhood with centro-temporal spike

We describe the case of a 15-year-old boy who had the diagnosis of benign partial epilepsy of childhood with centro-temporal spike. During the EEG a subclinical electrographic seizure was recorded. The discharges were clearly electropositive in T4 with positive phase reversal between derivations F8-T4 and T4-T6. The whole episode lasted less than one minute (45 sec). The interictal right medio-temporal spikes reemerged after 60 sec and were electronegative in the same location after the end of the electrographic seizures. The mechanisms underlying this uncommon pattern on EEG is not well established.

Complex partial status epilepticus in a child

Complex partial status epilepticus (SE) has been reported rarely in children. We describe the clinical case of a 14 year-old girl with complex partial seizures (CPS) since age 10 who developed a complex partial SE probably because she was not adherent to treatment. The neurologic examination and computed tomography scan were normal. During the SE she received diazepam and phenytoin and became free of the seizures after 5 minutes. The ictal EEG showed spikes and slow waves over the right temporal region.

Subclinical rhythmic electrographic discharge in adults: an atypical evolution

The subclinical rhythmic electrographic discharge in adults (SREDA) has been rarely reported. We describe the case of a 71 year-old man with transient ischemic attack, whose EEG showed an atypical evolution of this uncommon pattern. The computed tomography scan and cerebrospinal fluid were normal. We are not aware of any other report in the literature with this atypical evolution of SREDA.

Atypical pattern related to 14 Hz positive spikes

We studied two children with a history of headache and a normal physical and neurological examination whose EEG showed an electroencephalographic pattern recently published, the N-shape potential associated with the 14 Hz positive spikes. This graphoelement was observed only during the asleep state.

Epilepsy with continuous spike-waves during slow wave sleep: a clinical and electroencephalographic study

We report four children with epilepsy with "continuous spike-waves during slow wave sleep" (CSWSS). The main clinical features were partial motor seizures, mental retardation and motor deficit. The EEG findings were characterized by nearly continuous (> 85%) diffuse slow spike and wave activity in two patients, and localized to one hemisphere in two other cases during non-REM sleep. The treatment was effective in improving the clinical seizures, but not the EEG pattern. We believe that this epileptic syndrome has been overlooked and routine sleep EEG studies on epileptic children may disclose more cases of CSWSS.

Atypical EEG pattern in children with absence seizures

We studied four children with diagnosis of absence seizures (generalized primary epilepsy), and with a generalized delta activity on the EEG during clinical attacks provoked by hyperventilation. The lack of ictal generalized spike-and-wave discharges with a frequency of 3 Hz in our patients, makes this an atypical pattern. All children had complete control of their seizures and disappearance of the EEG changes with valproate. We concluded that generalized delta activity observed on EEG during the hyperventilation in children should not always be considered as a normal finding for age, since it could be an ictal event of an absence seizure.

Atypical clinical and electroencephalographic pattern in a patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

We describe an atypical clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) pattern observed during the course of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in a 14 year-old boy. In this patient with a two weeks history of partial complex seizures, the atypical EEG pattern was characterized by an initial left temporal focus which evolved to periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (PLEDs) and, only during the 3rd and 4th weeks the typical bilateral and generalized periodic complexes appeared.

Possible absence of attraction to odor in Panstrongylus megistus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) under laboratory conditions

We tested the attraction of Panstrongylus megistus odor under laboratory conditions, between males and females of this species and by individuals of each sex on recently fed virgin couples. We employed a system of choice boxes both with or without forced aeration. We observed no differences between the experimental groups with or without aeration over the stimuli in the tested situations. We also observed a clear trend among the insects to remain in the central box where they had been placed in the beginning of the tests.

Lethal effect of a bait for Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), the vector of Chagas' disease, containing hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), under laboratory conditions

The lethal effect of a bait containing an aqueous hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) suspension at the concentration of 1g/l and maintained at room temperature was studied in the laboratory over a period of 12 weeks. The suspension was placed in a latex bag hanging inside a 1000-ml beaker tightly covered with nylon netting, and left there with no changes for 85 days. Sixteen groups of R. prolixus bugs, consisting on average of 30 specimens each, were successively exposed to the bait and observed at different intervals for one week each. The mortality rate was 100% for all groups, except for the 16th, whose mortality rate was 96.7%. As the groups succeeded one another, mortality started to occur more rapidly and was more marked at the 6- and 24-h intervals. Later tests respectively started at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. showed that diurnal and nocturnal periodicity in the offer of food had no effect on mortality. First- and 2nd- instar nymphs and adults male were more sensitive and 5th- instar nymphs were more resistant to the active principle of the bait.

Lethality of triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), vectors of Chagas' disease, feeding on blood baits containing synthetic insecticides, under laboratory conditions

A laboratory study was conducted to test the toxicity of synthetic insecticides added to defibrinated sheep blood kept at room temperature and offered as food to the following triatomine species: Triatoma infestans, Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma vitticeps, Triatoma pseudomaculata, Triatoma brasiliensis and Rhodnius prolixus. The insecticides used, at a concentration of 1 g/l, were: HCH, DDT, Malathion and Trichlorfon, and the lethalithy observed at the end of a 7-day period varied according to the active principle of each. HCH was the most effective by the oral route, killing 100% of the insects, except P. megistus (95.7%) and T. pseudomaculata (94.1%). Trichlorfon killed the insects at rates ranging from 71.8% (T. vitticeps) to 98% (R. prolixus). Malathion was slightly less efficient, killing the insects at rates from 56.8% (T. vitticeps) to 97% (T. brasiliensis). DDT was the least effective, with a killing rate of 10% (T. vitticeps) to 75% (T. brasiliensis). Since the tests were performed at room temperature, we suggest that baits of this type should be tried for the control of triatomines in the field.

Chromosome studies in the red howler monkey, Alouatta seniculus stramineus (Platyrrhini, Primates): description of an X1X2Y1Y2/X1X1X2X2 sex-chromosome system and karyological comparisons with other subspecies

In the red howler monkey, Alouatta seniculus stramineus (2n = 47, 48, or 49), variations in diploid chromosome number are due to different numbers of microchromosomes. Males exhibit a Y;autosome translocation involving the short arm of an individual biarmed autosome. Consequently, the sex-chromosome constitution in the male is X1X2Y1Y2, with X1 representing the original X chromosome, X2 the biarmed autosome (No. 7), Y1 the Y;7p translocation product, and Y2 the acrocentric homolog of 7q. In the first meiotic division, a quadrivalent with a chain configuration can be observed in spermatocytes. Females have an X1X1X2X2 sex-chromosome constitution. Chromosome heteromorphisms were observed in pair 13, due to a pericentric inversion, and pair 19, due to the presence of constitutive heterochromatin. Microchromosomes, which varied in number between individuals, were also heterochromatic. NOR-staining was observed at two separate sites on a single chromosome pair (No. 10). A comparison of A.s. stramineus with A.s. macconnelli shows that these two subspecies have identical diploid chromosome numbers (47, 48, or 49), again due to a varying number of microchromosomes, and that they share a similar sex-chromosome constitution. Their karyotypes, however, are not identical, but can be derived from each other by a reciprocal translocation. Further comparisons with other A. seniculus subspecies reported in the literature indicate that this taxon is not karyologically uniform and that substantial chromosome shuffling has occurred between populations that have been considered to be subspecies by taxonomic criteria based on their morphometric attributes.

Behavior of triatomines (Hemiptera:Reduviidae) vectors of Chagas' disease. IV. Fecundity, fertility and longevity of Panstrongylus megistus (Burm., 1835) pairs and virgin females starved under laboratory conditions

A laboratory study was conducted on the fecundity, fertility and life span of Panstrongylus megistus pairs and on the fecundity and life span of P. megistus virgin females submitted to starvation after the last moulting. Of the mated females, 22.2% laid eggs, 4.4% of which were fertile. Females resisted starvation more than males. Of the starved virgin females, only 10% laid eggs, with a low egg-laying rate (0.47) per female. Resistance to starvation was lower in virgin than in mated females.

Behavior of triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) vectors of Chagas' disease. III. Influence of the number of matings on the fecundity and fertility of Panstrongylus megistus (Burm., 1835) in the laboratory

A study of the effect of mating in the fecundity and fertility of females of P. megistus fed on pigeon blood every 14 days, was carried out in the laboratory. Two groups were constituted: I - females which mated only once; II - females which stayed always with the males. Only 56.7% of group I females laid fertile eggs, while as much as 90% of group II females laid fertile eggs. The duration of the fertile oviposition was greater in the females which stayed always with the males. Some females of this group were able to mate up to seven times throughout their life-span. This fact render useless sterile males in the control of these insects.

Poisoning by chemical non-medicinal products in Brazil: clinical and laboratory findings in 132 patients

One hundred and thirty-two patients with suspected exogenous intoxication were analysed according to clinical manifestation and toxicological results. Detection of toxic substances was performed in blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. The greatest occurrence of chronic exogenous intoxication was in males aged 21 to 50 years old. Peasants and industrial workers were the most affected. 70% of all patients showed neurological manifestations. There was clear predominance of central nervous system impairment associated with poisoning with herbicides and organophosphates.

Behavior of triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) vectors of Chagas' disease. II. Influence of feeding, lighting and time of day on the number of matings, mating speed and duration of copulation of Panstrongylus megistus (Burm, 1835) under laboratory conditions

To determine the influence of feeding, lighting and time of day on the copulating behavior of Panstrongylus megistus, 480 insect pairs were divided into four groups of 120 each and tested in the following respective situations: without food deprivation (F.D.), with five days of F.D., with ten days of F.D., and with 20 days of F.D. The tests were performed between 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with light (700-1400 lux) and in the dark (1.4-2.8 lux) and behavior was recorded by the time sampling technique. Mating speed (MS) and duration of copulation (DC) were also calculated for each situation. The maximum frequency of copulation was observed after five days of F.D., at night, in the dark (n = 16), and the minimum was observed for recently-fed pairs, at night, with light (n = 4). Males approached females more often than females approached males. MS was lowest in pairs with twenty days of F.D., at night, with light (mean = 23.0 +/- 16.0 minutes), and highest in recently-fed pairs, during the day, with light (mean = 2.9 +/- 2.5 minutes). DC was shortest in recently-fed insects, during the day, in the dark (mean = 23.5 +/- 6.7 minutes), and longest in recently-fed animals, at night, in the dark (mean = 38.3 +/- 6.9 minutes).

[Neurologic manifestations in 93 patients with exogenous poisoning caused by non-therapeutic chemical substances]

Ninety-three patients with neurological manifestations and suspected exogenous intoxication were analysed. The detection of toxic substances was performed in the blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. There was clear predominance of the central nervous system impairment than the peripheric, and an apparent tropism of herbicides and organophosphates to the central nervous system compared with the peripheral nervous system, and considering the manifestations caused by carbamates and organochlorines. The authors analyse some probable action mechanism of these substances in the nervous system, and show the most frequently neurological signs and symptoms found.

Behavior of triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) vectors of Chagas' disease. I. Courtship and copulation of Panstrongylus megistus (Burm., 1835) in the laboratory

A study of the courtship and copulation behavior of Panstrongylus megistus was carried out in the laboratory. Fifty-five newly-fed virgin couples were used. Experiments were performed during the day (9:00 to 12:00 a.m.) and at night (7:00 to 10:00 p.m.). Behavior was recorded by direct observation and was found to consist of the following sequence of behavioral patterns: the male approached the female and jumped on her or mounted her; he took on a dorsolateral position and immobilized the female dorsally and ventrally with his three pairs of legs; the male genital was placed below those of the female; the paramers of the male immobilized the female's genitals; copulation started. The couple joined by the iniciative of the male. The female could be receptive and accept copulation, or nonreceptive and reject the male. Copulation occurred more often on the occasion of the first attempt by the male. Duration of copulation was X = 29.3 +/- 9.3 min (CV = 83%). No behavioral differences were observed between couples tested during the day or at night.

The vertical dispersion of Anopheles (Kerteszia) cruzi in a forest in southern Brazil suggests that human cases of malaria of simian origin might be expected

By staining females of Anopheles cruzi with fluorescent coloured powders in a forest in the State of Santa Catarina, we showed that they move from canopy to ground and vice-versa to feed. This suggests that in areas where this mosquito is a vector of human and simian malarias sporadic infections of man with monkey plasmodia might be expected.
