Abstract
The establishment of marine protected areas is often viewed as a conflict between conservation and fishing. We considered consumptive and nonconsumptive interests of multiple stakeholders (i.e., fishers, scuba divers, conservationists, managers, scientists) in the systematic design of a network of marine protected areas along California's central coast in the context of the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative. With advice from managers, administrators, and scientists, a representative group of stakeholders defined biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic goals that accommodated social needs and conserved marine ecosystems, consistent with legal requirements. To satisfy biodiversity goals, we targeted 11 marine habitats across 5 depth zones, areas of high species diversity, and areas containing species of special status. We minimized adverse socioeconomic impacts by minimizing negative effects on fishers. We included fine-scale fishing data from the recreational and commercial fishing sectors across 24 fisheries. Protected areas designed with consideration of commercial and recreational fisheries reduced potential impact to the fisheries approximately 21% more than protected areas designed without consideration of fishing effort and resulted in a small increase in the total area protected (approximately 3.4%). We incorporated confidential fishing data without revealing the identity of specific fisheries or individual fishing grounds. We sited a portion of the protected areas near land parks, marine laboratories, and scientific monitoring sites to address nonconsumptive socioeconomic goals. Our results show that a stakeholder-driven design process can use systematic conservation-planning methods to successfully produce options for network design that satisfy multiple conservation and socioeconomic objectives. Marine protected areas that incorporate multiple stakeholder interests without compromising biodiversity conservation goals are more likely to protect marine ecosystems.

Abstract
Soy beverage and cows' milk yogurts were produced with Steptococcus thermophilus (ATCC 4356) and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (IM 025). The drop in pH during fermentation was faster in the soy beverage than in cows' milk, but the final pH values were similar. Yogurts were prepared with a yogurt starter in conjunction with either the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus johnsonii NCC533 (La-1), Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 53103 (GG) or human derived bifidobacteria. The presence of the probiotic bacteria did not affect the growth of the yogurt strains. Approximately 2 log increases in both L. rhamnosus GG and L. johnsonii La-1 were observed when each was added with the yogurt strains in both cows' milk and the soy beverage. Two of the five bifidobacteria strains grew well in the cows' milk and soy beverage during fermentation with the yogurt bacteria. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses showed that the probiotic bacteria and the bifidobacteria were using different sugars to support their growth, depending on whether the bacteria were growing in cows' milk or soy beverage.

Abstract
AIMS The propionibacteria are commercially important due to their use in the cheese industry, and there is a growing interest for their probiotic effects. Stimulatory effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on propionic acid bacteria have been observed. This study was designed to examine the possibility of using spent media previously used to grow LAB for the production of biomass and metabolites of Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii. METHODS AND RESULTS Seventeen MRS and vegetable juice media were prefermented by various LAB and evaluated for their ability to subsequently support the growth of Propionibacterium, using automated spectrophotometry (AS). Growth of Propionibacterium in spent media was strongly affected by the LAB strain used to produce the spent medium. The native MRS medium (not prefermented) yielded the highest optical density values followed by prefermented media by Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Lactococcus lactis. Prefermented cabbage juice enabled good growth of Propionibacterium. For the production of organic acids and vitamin B12, cells of Propionibacterium were concentrated and immobilized in alginate beads in the aim of accelerating the bioconversions. More propionic acid was obtained in spent media than in native MRS. The concentration of vitamin B12 was higher in media fermented with free cells than those with immobilized cultures; with the free cells, its concentration varied from 900 to 1800 ng ml(-1) of media. CONCLUSIONS It was demonstrated that spent media could be recycled for the production of Propionibacterium and metabolites, depending on the LAB strain that was previously grown. Media remediation is needed to improve the production of vitamin B12, especially with immobilized cells. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study presents an option for recycling of spent media generated by producers of LAB or producers of fermented vegetables. The propionic fermentation may result in three commercial products: biomass, vitamin B12 or organic acids, which may be used as starters, supplements or food preservatives. It is an attractive process from economical and environmental standpoints.

Abstract
In this study, 39 patients with PD and 25 control subjects without neurologic disease completed testing in a driving simulator. PD patients had more total collisions on the driving simulator than control subjects (t = -3.7, p < 0.01). In PD patients, collisions were associated with Hoehn and Yahr stage (chi(2) = 12.4, p = 0.006) and correlated with Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale score (r = 0.5, p < 0.01).

Abstract
The mitochondrial, proton-pumping NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase consists of at least 35 subunits whose synthesis is divided between the cytosol and mitochondria; this complex I catalyzes the first steps of mitochondrial electron transfer and proton translocation. Radiolabel from [(3)H]myristic acid was incorporated by Neurospora crassa into the mitochondrial-encoded, approximately 70 kDa ND5 subunit of NADH dehydrogenase, as shown by immunoprecipitation. This myristate apparently was linked to the peptide through an amide linkage at an invariant lysine residue (Lys546), based upon analyses of proteolysis products. The myristoylated lysine residue occurs in the predicted transmembrane helix 17 (residues 539-563) of ND5. A consensus amino acid sequence around this conserved residue exists in homologous subunits of NADH dehydrogenase. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, in all prokaryotes and eukaryotes, contains this same consensus sequence surrounding the lysine which is myristoylated in N. crassa.

Abstract
Arkansas doctors are banning to help draft a regulation that would require health maintenance organizations and insurance carriers to process health care claims within 45 calendar days after receipt of a claim. The proposed regulation would be administered by the Arkansas Department of Insurance. If additional information from a claimant is needed to process a claim, a carrier must notify a provider within 10 days of receipt of the claim. Once that information is received by the carrier, it has an additional 45 days to pay.

Abstract
The gene for Hsp30, the only known alpha-crystallin-related heat shock protein of Neurospora crassa, was disrupted by repeat-induced point mutagenesis, leading to loss of cell survival at high temperature. Hsp30, which is not synthesized at 30 degrees C, associates reversibly with the mitochondria at high temperature (45 degrees C). In this study, we found that import of selected proteins into internal compartments of mitochondria, following their synthesis in the cytosol, was severely impaired at high temperature in a strain mutant in Hsp30. After 70 min of cell incubation at 45 degrees C, most matrix, inner membrane, and intermembrane-space proteins tested were reduced in import by about 50-70% in the mutant, as compared to wild-type cells. In contrast, assembly of selected proteins into the outer mitochondrial membrane was not reduced, except for one component of the preprotein translocase complex of the mitochondrial outer membrane. Three proteins of this complex co-immunoprecipitated with Hsp30 of wild-type cells incubated at 45 degrees C. We propose that Hsp30 interacts with the preprotein translocase of the mitochondrial outer membrane and that it chaperones the activity of one or more components of this translocase complex at high temperature.

Abstract
SK-N-MC human neuroblastoma cells express functional D1, but not D5, dopaminergic receptors. Stimulating cells with dopamine or the D1-selective agonist, SKF R-38393, rapidly (t(1/2) = 1 h) resulted in > 95% attenuation of dopamine-mediated accumulation of cyclic AMP, without any change in D1 dopamine receptor levels. Prolonged (> 4 h) exposure of cells to dopamine attenuated D1 receptor levels to 45-50% of control (t(1/2) = 8 h) and was accompanied by a loss of high-affinity binding sites. At the molecular level, the expression of D1 receptor messenger RNA was bimodal: an initial increase (by approximately 60%) of receptor messenger RNA within 2 h of treatment of cells with dopamine was followed by a decline to 50% below control messenger RNA levels. Low concentrations (1-10 nM) of dopamine also potentiated D1 messenger RNA levels (up to 48%), resulting in a twofold increase in receptor levels. Transfection studies with the cloned human D1 promoter construct, pGL-D1P, indicated that the up-regulation of D1 messenger RNA was due to activation of promoter by dopamine. The dopamine-mediated up-regulation of both D1 receptor messenger RNA and promoter was prevented by the D1-selective antagonist, SCH 23390. The results suggest that dopamine regulates D1 receptor gene and protein expression in a bimodal manner, partly through activation of the receptor promoter. Moreover, the effects of dopamine are independent of the second messenger, cyclic AMP.

Abstract
This study describes a comparison of children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) with two control groups: the sibling nearest to them in age, and peers matched for gender and age. A broad range of emotional and behavioural difficulties were assessed using the Conners' Teachers' and Parents' rating scales (CTRS 39 and CPRS 93). Individually completed children's questionnaires provided qualitative data about the children's problems. The results of the study showed markedly higher scores for the children with diabetes on the parent scales on factors such as hyperactivity, psychosomatic and restless/disorganized, in comparison to their siblings, but not their peers. These differences were not found on the Teachers' Scales. The findings are discussed in terms of parental perceptions of children with diabetes and the difficulties these children and their siblings experience in their lives. Suggestions are made for further research.

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to develop a pig model for colonic drug delivery and to validate the model by determining whether the physiology of the pig colon had been significantly altered after the surgical implantation of a gut cannula into the terminal ileum of the pig. A fistula was created in the terminal ileum of the pig, and a cannula fitted for the purpose of directly administering drug formulations to a point just anterior to the ileocaeco-colonic valve of the gastrointestinal tract. The cephalic vein of the pig was also cannulated to enable continued blood sampling. Sulphasalazine was used as the model drug for the validation study. In the intact colon, sulphasalazine is metabolized by the gut microflora to sulphapyridine which is then absorbed. Sulphasalazine was administered orally to non-fistulated and fistulated pigs and then ileally, via the gut cannula, to fistulated pigs. Absorption of sulphapyridine was monitored by HPLC analysis of plasma samples. There was no significant difference in the absorption obtained for the three groups. Thus it is demonstrated that the colon physiology had not been altered. The colonic pig model is ideal for studying factors affecting the colonic absorption of drugs and as a means for developing drug delivery systems with improved absorption properties.

Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the simultaneous effects of strain, incubation temperature (15 to 25 degrees C), agitation time (0 to 24 h), and initial sulfite concentration (100 to 300 ppm) on glycerol production in grape juice by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fourteen strains were studied to determine their growth patterns in the presence of sulfites and ethanol. Baker's yeast strains were more sensitive to sulfite than wine strains, and little growth occurred at initial sulfite levels greater than 150 ppm. Sensitivity to sulfite increased with increasing levels of ethanol. Three strains exhibiting the best growth in the presence of sulfites and ethanol were selected for interaction studies. Fermentations were carried out until the solids content had decreased to less than 6 degrees Brix, which was the point that glycerol content became stable. For the three strains used, the greatest level of glycerol production was observed in the presence of 300 ppm of sulfite for most incubation temperatures and agitation times. There was significant interaction between the strain, incubation temperature, and agitation time parameters for glycerol synthesis, and a response surface method was used to predict the optimal conditions for glycerol production. Under static conditions, the highest level of glycerol production was observed at 20 degrees C, while incubation at 25 degrees C gave the best results when the cultures were agitated for 24 h. Response surface equations were used to predict that the optimum conditions for glycerol production by S. cerevisiae Y11 were a temperature of 22 degrees C, an initial sulfite concentration of 300 ppm, and no agitation, which yielded 0.68 g of glycerol per 100 ml.

Abstract
We used a multiple baseline design across teachers (with a reversal phase for 1 teacher) to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of a structured coaching procedure on the teaching behaviors of 3 day-care teachers. Structured coaching preceding daily caregiver routines resulted in (a) substantial increases in adult delivery of behavioral support of social interaction during group activities with 2- and 4-year-old children and (b) marked collateral increases in positive interactions of socially withdrawn children. Long-term maintenance effects were demonstrated by both the teachers and target children, and social validity measures indicated that the teachers rated coaching very positively on several dimensions. The results are discussed in relation to in-service training of day-care staff, the concept of coaching as a setting event, and the dissemination of teaching technology related to social interaction of young children.

Abstract
Leuconostoc oenos
was grown on apple juice-based media. The effect of pH control on metabolism and biomass production was studied. Without pH control,
L. oenos
acidified the apple juice media to approximately pH 3.6. More than 75% of the malic acid was used under these conditions, but less than half of the carbohydrates was assimilated. Under pH control, biomass yields increased by 60%; most of the malic acid was used, but high levels of unfermented carbohydrates remained. The addition of tomato juice, vitamins, nucleotides, Mn
+
, and malic acid did not permit further increases in the cell counts; however, malic acid did induce further acidification. Growth without pH control favored a more homofermentative metabolism. Biomass production was higher in filter-sterilized apple juice media compared with that in the autoclaved media.

Abstract
The aspiration biopsy cytologic features of a malignant schwannoma metastatic to the lung in a 39-year-old black female with von Recklinghausen's disease are reported. Cytologic features of malignant sarcomas having a spindle-cell pattern are described along with a discussion of the cytologic differential diagnosis. This is believed to be the first reported case of a malignant schwannoma involving the lung diagnosed by aspiration cytology and demonstrates the usefulness of the technique in evaluating patients with metastatic sarcomas.

Abstract
The records of all 380 adult patients receiving cardiac pacemakers at West Virginia University in the 15-year period ending January 1, 1977, were reviewed. The five-year survival rate was 58 per cent and the 10 year, 38 per cent with a median survival of 74 months. Life expectancy approached life-table curves if the mortality during the initial year was ignored. Although the younger patients lived the longest, their expected survival was reduced more than in the older patients. The need for a pacemaker in a young person implies serious life-shortening consequences. Unlike reports in the literature, patients with sinoatrial disease fared worse than those with A-V block.

Abstract
A psychosocial team took part in the total patient care program of a burn unit. Psychometric data were gathered during the treatment phase and at one-year followup. The treatment plan included adequate analgesics, major tranquilizers when indicated, attention to sleep requirements for patients, and active participation of family members in the treatment program, with supportive psychotherapy. Standardized psychological and intelligence tests were administered to adult patients during treatment and one year after discharge, and scores compared.

Abstract
A search is described for an excited Kn = 0+ rotational band based on the 6 44 MeV level of 24Mg. Mean nuclear lifetimes have been measured by the Doppler shift attenuation method using the 12C('60,a)24Mg reaction and the results are 't'm = 6629, 287 and 133 fs for levels at 6'44, 865 and 10 58 MeV respectively. The absolute transition rates found for the y decays from the 644 and 865 MeV levels are in good agreement with the results of shell model calculations if it is assumed that these levels are the 0+ and 2 + members respectively of the excited Kn = 0+ rotational band. Based on this assumption, a result Qoo = 048 008b is obtained for the intraband quadrupole moment. From a study of the 23Na(p, y) reaction, it is established that the J = 4 levels at 12 63 and 1305 MeV do not decay by enhanced E2 transitions to the 8 65 MeV level. This suggests that neither of these levels is the 4 + member of the excited Kn = 0+ rotational band. An assignment of J" = 4+ is made to one member of the doublet at 1058 MeV.
