Abstract
Vickrey auctions (VA) and Becker-DeGroot-Marschak auctions (BDM) are strategically equivalent demand-revealing mechanisms, differentiated only by a human opponent in the VA, and a random-number-generator opponent in the BDM. Game parameters are such that players are incentivized to reveal their private subjective values (SV) and behavior should be identical in both tasks. However, this has been repeatedly shown not to be the case. In this study, the neural correlates of outcome feedback processing during VA and BDM were directly compared using electroencephalography. Twenty-eight healthy participants bid for household products which were then divided into high- and low-SV categories. The VA included a human opponent deception to induce a social environment, while in reality a random-number-generator was used in both tasks. A P3 component peaking at 336 ms over midline parietal sites showed more positive amplitudes for high bid values, and for win outcomes in the VA but not the BDM. Both auctions also elicited a Reward Positivity potential, maximal at 275 ms along the central midline electrodes, that was not modulated by auction task or SV. Further, an exploratory N170 potential in the right occipitotemporal electrodes and a vertex positive potential component were stronger in the VA relative to the BDM. Results point to an enhanced cortical response to bid outcomes during VA task in a potential component associated with emotional control, and to the occurrence of face-sensitive potentials in VA but not in BDM auction. These findings suggest modulation of bid outcome processing by the social-competitive aspect of auction tasks. Directly comparing two prominent auction paradigms affords the opportunity to isolate the impact of social environment on competitive, risky decision-making. Findings suggest that feedback processing as early as 176 ms is facilitated by the presence of a human competitor, and later processing is modulated by social context and subjective value.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Increased body weight and obesity are associated with greater bone mineral density (BMD) though effects on fracture risk appear to be site specific. In particular, the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), abdominal weight and Vertebral Fractures (VF) is complex. Some studies have found greater incidence of VF's with obesity though results are inconsistent. Recent evidence supports a stronger association between measures of abdominal fat and VF's. We aimed to examine the association between central adiposity and VF's in older Irish adults.
Methods
Participants were from a large cross-sectional study of older Irish adults (aged >60) attending GP or hospital outpatient services. VF diagnosis was based on self-report (ie. clinical vertebral fracture) so we excluded those with a Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) < 25. BMD was measured with DXA and patients taking antiresorptive or anabolic therapies were excluded. The relationship of waist hip ratio (a surrogate marker of central adiposity) with VF's was explored in regression models.
Results
2055 identified, mean age 69.8 ± 6.3 years (range 60-99), 58.6% female. Vertebral fracture prevalence was 6.3% (n=130). Waist hip ratio was positively associated with presence of a vertebral fracture after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, timed up and go, smoking, serum vitamin D, lumbar spine BMD and steroid use > 3 months (beta: 0.04, P<0.001).
Conclusion
We identified that central adiposity (as measured by waist/hip ratio) was associated with VF presence independent of several factors including BMI and spine BMD. This suggests that body fat distribution and/or altered bone quality may play a role. Visceral body fat (which is correlated with waist hip ratio) is associated with increased production of adipocytokines, altered vertebral geometry and micro-architecture, increased vertebral bone marrow fat and greater loading forces on the spine, all of which may mediate increased VF risk.

Abstract
Introduction Denosumab is commonly used to treat osteoporosis. However, discontinuation results in rebound bone loss and increased vertebral fracture risk. We report a clinical case series, illustrating the dilemma in deciding the best treatment should denosumab be stopped. Cases In eight patients aged 56-89 years, zolendronic acid after stopping denosumab resulted in BTM rises and BMD decline. In a 68-year-old, two years of oral bisphosphonate after three years of denosumab resulted in elevated bone turnover markers (BTM) and decline in bone mineral density (BMD), necessitating a switch to zoledronic acid. In a 79-year-old, two annual doses of zolendronic acid after three years of denosumab failed to suppress high BTM, with BMD dropping and denosumab being restarted. In a 60-year-old, on stopping denosumab after 10 years of oral bisphosphonate, BMD remained stable despite no further therapy. Conclusion Drug holidays are not an option with denosumab, with a risk of bone loss even on transitioning to bisphosphonates. Risk is greater with longer duration of treatment6 and may be mitigated by prior bisphosphonate use. Standard dose zoledronic acid does not prevent bone loss in a significant proportion of patients. BTM may help in monitoring treatment and need for further bisphosphonates.

Abstract
Prolonged Covid-19-related school closures in the UK raised concerns that science teaching and learning at primary level would be negatively impacted. This paper reports the findings of phase 1 of a study that the authors are conducting with teachers and parents to explore this issue. We found that a significant proportion of teachers were providing less science during lockdown than in the normal school week. Teachers, particularly those working in more deprived areas, reported that translating the science curriculum for home learning had been difficult, with concerns around resources, internet access and parental ability to help. Some areas of the curriculum posed particular difficulties, leading to a narrowing of topics being taught. Both teachers and parents felt that schools prioritised English and maths above science. Meanwhile some parents reported that their children had engaged in sophisticated extracurricular activities, bolstered by resources available at home and knowledgeable adult help, but others said that their children had done no science at all. Parents who had studied science at post-compulsory level were much more comfortable in helping their children with science home learning. These factors combine to create conditions which may exacerbate existing inequalities as to who can access science education and careers.

Abstract
Vegan and vegetarian diets are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Due to the avoidance of animal products there can be significant differences in nutrient intakes between meat-eaters and vegetarians, and especially vegans. Importantly, research has identified that both vegans and vegetarians may be vulnerable to low intakes of some micronutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate micronutrient intake in omnivorous, vegetarian and vegan women. In total, 62 women (26 omnivores, 16 vegetarians, 20 vegans, mean age 31.6 ± 12.4 y, mean BMI 24.1 ± 1.6 kg/m2) completed 4-day diet diaries. Diet intake data was analyzed using Nutritics and nutrient intake levels were compared with national dietary recommendations (RNIs). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, with differences between the groups identified using ANOVA with post-hoc Bonferroni correction. All groups recorded intakes of vitamin D, iron, iodine and selenium below RNI. The vegan group had significantly lower intakes of vitamin D, vitamin B12, calcium, selenium and iodine than vegetarians and omnivores (p < 0.05), with particularly low intakes of selenium (24.7 ± 11.9 μg) and iodine (24.4 ± 12.7 μg). These results suggest that adult women in the UK are at risk of low intakes of several vitamins and minerals, with the exclusion of animal products conferring an additional vulnerability, particularly with respect to selenium and iodine, both of which play important roles in thyroid hormone production. This study highlights iodine and selenium intakes to be a concern amongst women who follow vegan diets, and the necessity of further research to identify if low intake translates to biochemical markers and functional status.

Abstract
Background Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by widespread pain, sleep disturbance, fatigue and cognitive/affective symptoms. Functional imaging studies have revealed that FM and other chronic pain syndromes can affect resting brain activity. This study utilized electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings to investigate the relative power of ongoing oscillatory activity in the resting brain. Methods A 64‐channel EEG was recorded at rest in 19 female FM patients and 18 healthy, age‐matched, control subjects. The Manual Tender Point Scale (MTPS) examination was performed to quantify tonic pain and tenderness on the day of testing along with measures of mood, arousal and fatigue. Oscillations in delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma frequency bands were analysed using Standardised Low‐Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography to evaluate sources of spectral activity throughout the whole brain. Results FM patients exhibited greater pain, tiredness and tension on the day of testing relative to healthy control participants and augmented theta activity in prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices. No significant differences were seen in other frequency bands. Augmented frontal theta activity in FM patients significantly correlated with measures of tenderness and mean tiredness scores. Conclusions The findings indicate that alterations to resting‐state oscillatory activity may relate to ongoing tonic pain and fatigue in FM, and manifest in brain regions relevant for cognitive‐attentional aspects of pain processing and endogenous pain inhibition. Enhanced low‐frequency oscillations were previously seen in FM and other chronic pain syndromes, and may relate to pathophysiological mechanisms for ongoing pain such as thalamocortical dysrhythmia. Significance Increased prefrontal theta activity may contribute to persistent pain in fibromyalgia or represent the outcome of prolonged symptoms. The findings point to the potential for therapeutic interventions aimed at normalizing neural oscillations, while further research utilizing quantitative analysis of resting EEG could benefit our understanding of fibromyalgia pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown increases in experimental pain during induction of a negative emotion with visual stimuli, verbal statements or unpleasant odours. The goal of the present study was to analyse the spatio-temporal activation patterns underlying pain augmentation during negative emotional sounds. METHODS Negative (e.g., crying), positive (e.g., laughter) and neutral (e.g., distant traffic) sound samples of 4 s duration were presented while noxious laser stimuli were administered to the dorsum of the right hand in 16 healthy participants. The electroencephalographic laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) were modelled using six equivalent source dipoles located in the left and right fronto-opercular/anterior-insular cortex, left parietal operculum, left primary somatosensory cortex, medial parietal cortex and left medial temporal cortex. RESULTS Negative emotional sounds were associated with stronger pain than neutral or positive sounds. The source activity in the left medial temporal cortex, purportedly involving hippocampal formation, in the epoch 294-330 ms was greater during negative than neutral or positive sounds. In the left fronto-opercular/anterior-insular cortex, negative sounds failed to show the positive potential component at around 260 ms that was observed during positive and especially during neutral sounds. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest increased input of pain-related information into the hippocampal formation when listening to negative emotional sounds, which may in turn facilitate temporal binding between representations of noxious and other behaviourally relevant stimuli, and perhaps associative learning. Absence of the positive potential component fronto-opercular/anterior-insular cortex during negative sounds points to a slow attentional disengagement from pain and increased awareness of the painful stimulus.
