Abstract
Background People living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face an increased risk of severe outcomes such as hospitalization or death from COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccination is a vital approach to mitigate the risk and severity of infection in patients with CKD. Limited information exists regarding the factors that shape COVID-19 vaccine uptake, including health information-seeking behavior and perceptions, within the CKD population. Objective The objectives were to describe among CKD patients, (1) health information-seeking behavior on COVID-19, (2) their capacity to comprehend and trust COVID-19 information from different sources, and (3) their perceptions concerning COVID-19 infection and vaccination. Design/Setting Cross-sectional web-based survey administered in British Columbia and Ontario from February 17, 2023, to April 17, 2023. Participants Chronic kidney disease G3b-5D patients and kidney transplant recipients (CKD G1T-5T) enrolled in a longitudinal COVID-19 vaccine serology study. Methods and Measurements The survey consisted of a questionnaire that included demographic and clinical data, perceived susceptibility of contracting COVID-19, the ability to collect, understand, and trust information on COVID-19, as well as perceptions regarding COVID-19 vaccination. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data with values expressed as count (%) and chi square tests were performed with a significance level set at P ≤ .05. A content analysis was performed on one open-ended response regarding respondents' questions surrounding COVID-19 infection and vaccination. Results Among the 902 patients who received the survey via email, 201 completed the survey, resulting in a response rate of 22%. The median age was 64 years old (IQR 53-74), 48% were male, 51% were university educated, 32% were on kidney replacement therapies, and 57% had received ≥5 COVID-19 vaccine doses. 65% of respondents reported that they had sought out COVID-19-related information in the last 12 months, with 91% and 84% expressing having understood and trusted the information they received, respectively. Those with a higher number of COVID-19 vaccine doses were associated with having sought out (P =.017), comprehended (P < .001), and trusted (P =. 005) COVID-19-related information. Female sex was associated with expressing more concern about contracting COVID-19 (P = .011). Most respondents strongly agreed to statements regarding the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination. Respondents' questions about COVID-19 infection and vaccination centered on 4 major themes: COVID-19 vaccination strategy, vaccine effectiveness, vaccine safety, and the impact of COVID-19 infection and vaccination on kidney health. Limitations This survey was administered within the Canadian health care context to patients with CKD who had at least 1 COVID-19 vaccine dose. Race/ethnicity of participants was not captured. Conclusions In this survey of individuals with CKD, COVID-19 information-seeking behavior was high and almost all respondents understood and trusted the information they received. Perceptions toward the COVID-19 vaccine and booster were mostly favorable.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare visual and glaucoma outcomes in patients with known glaucoma after a penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) or a Boston Keratoprosthesis Type 1 (KPro) as a second corneal replacement procedure. DESIGN Retrospective interventional case series. PARTICIPANTS Charts of 141 eyes that underwent either a PKP or KPro at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal after one failed PKP from 2008 to 2020 were reviewed. Forty-six eyes with preoperative glaucoma were included. METHODS Data collected included demographics, indication for the initial surgery, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), concurrent ocular disorders, number of glaucoma medications, need for glaucoma surgery, cup-to-disc ratios (CDRs), mean RNFL thickness, and visual field (VF) characteristics. Primary outcomes were glaucoma progression trends. Secondary outcomes were visual outcomes and need for additional procedures. RESULTS Mean follow-up was 4.7 years for the PKP and 7.3 for the KPro group (P<0.007). 30.6% of PKP compared to 70.5% of KPro patients were diagnosed with glaucoma preoperatively. Glaucoma worsened similarly in both groups; this is based on an analysis of the number of glaucoma medications, CDR, need for glaucoma surgery, and characteristic VF changes. Patients in the PKP group required significantly more regrafts than patients in the KPro group (31.8 vs. 8.3%; P=0.045). CONCLUSIONS A preoperative diagnosis of glaucoma does not preclude KPro implantation. In glaucomatous eyes, the disease progressed similarly in both groups. Since both procedures increase the risk of worsening glaucoma, close follow-up is recommended. KPro may decrease the need for further corneal transplantation surgery.

Abstract
The rate of the final step in the astrophysical αp process, the ^{34}Ar(α,p)^{37}K reaction, suffers from large uncertainties due to a lack of experimental data, despite having a considerable impact on the observable light curves of x-ray bursts and the composition of the ashes of hydrogen and helium burning on accreting neutron stars. We present the first direct measurement constraining the ^{34}Ar(α,p)^{37}K reaction cross section, using the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics gas jet target. The combined cross section for the ^{34}Ar,Cl(α,p)^{37}K,Ar reaction is found to agree well with Hauser-Feshbach predictions. The ^{34}Ar(α,2p)^{36}Ar cross section, which can be exclusively attributed to the ^{34}Ar beam component, also agrees to within the typical uncertainties quoted for statistical models. This indicates the applicability of the statistical model for predicting astrophysical (α,p) reaction rates in this part of the αp process, in contrast to earlier findings from indirect reaction studies indicating orders-of-magnitude discrepancies. This removes a significant uncertainty in models of hydrogen and helium burning on accreting neutron stars.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Low-dose colchicine reduces the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with chronic coronary artery disease (CAD), but the absolute benefit may vary between patients. Individual benefit from preventive therapies can be estimated using the guideline-recommended SMART-REACH model.
Purpose
This study aimed to assess the range of individual absolute 10-year and lifetime benefit from low-dose colchicine according to patient risk profile.
Methods
The SMART-REACH model was combined with the relative treatment effect of low-dose colchicine, and applied to all participants from the LoDoCo2 trial (n=5,522), and patients with chronic CAD from the UCC-SMART cohort (n=5,308). Individual treatment benefit was expressed as (i) 10-year absolute risk reductions (ARRs) for myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, or cardiovascular death (MACE), and (ii) life-years gained free of MACE. Predictions were also performed for MACE plus ischemia-driven coronary revascularization (MACE+), through development of a new competing risk-adjusted lifetime prediction model in data from the REACH registry (n=14,522). Low-dose colchicine was compared to alternative intensive prevention goals, i.e. low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c) reduction to <1.4 mmol/L, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) reduction to <130 mmHg.
Results
Median individual 10-year ARR for MACE from low-dose colchicine therapy was 4.6% (interquartile range [IQR] 3.6–6.0%), and median gain in life expectancy free of MACE was 2.0 (IQR 1.6–2.5) years. Median 10-year ARR for MACE+ was 8.6% (IQR 7.6–9.8%), and median gain in MACE+-free life expectancy was 3.4 (IQR 2.6–4.2) years. For intensified LDL-c and SBP reduction respectively, median 10-year ARRs were 3.0% (IQR 1.5–5.1%) and 1.7% (IQR 0.0–5.7%) for MACE, and 5.2% (IQR 2.5–8.7%) and 2.9% (IQR 0.0–9.5%) for MACE+. Median life-years gained from LDL-c and SBP reduction were 1.2 (IQR 0.6–2.1) and 0.7 (IQR 0.0–2.3) years free of MACE, and 1.8 (IQR 0.8–3.3) and 0.9 (IQR 0.0–3.4) years free of MACE+.
Conclusion
The individual absolute benefit from low-dose colchicine varies between patients. In an era where lipid- and blood pressure-lowering therapies are already routinely used, the benefits of low-dose colchicine are expected to be of at least similar magnitude to those of intensified LDL-c and SBP reduction in patients with chronic CAD.

Abstract
Introduction Higher thalamic volume has been found in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and children with clinical-level symptoms within the general population (Boedhoe et al. 2017, Weeland et al. 2021a). Functionally distinct thalamic nuclei are an integral part of OCD-relevant brain circuitry. Objectives We aimed to study the thalamic nuclei volume in relation to subclinical and clinical OCD across different age ranges. Understanding the role of thalamic nuclei and their associated circuits in pediatric OCD could lead towards treatment strategies specifically targeting these circuits. Methods We studied the relationship between thalamic nuclei and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in a large sample of school-aged children from the Generation R Study (N = 2500) (Weeland et al. 2021b). Using the data from the ENIGMA-OCD working group we conducted mega-analyses to study thalamic subregional volume in OCD across the lifespan in 2,649 OCD patients and 2,774 healthy controls across 29 sites (Weeland et al. 2021c). Thalamic nuclei were grouped into five subregions: anterior, ventral, intralaminar/medial, lateral and pulvinar (Figure 1). ![]()
Results Both children with subclinical and clinical OCD compared with controls show increased volume across multiple thalamic subregions. Adult OCD patients have decreased volume across all subregions (Figure 2), which was mostly driven by medicated and adult-onset patients. ![]()
Conclusions
Our results suggests that OCD-related thalamic volume differences are global and not driven by particular subregions and that the direction of effects are driven by both age and medication status. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract
Background Patellar instability is a relatively common condition that leads to disability and restriction of activities. People with recurrent instability may be given the option of physiotherapy or surgery though this is largely driven by clinician preference rather than by a strong evidence base. We sought to determine the feasibility of conducting a definitive trial comparing physiotherapy with surgical treatment for people with recurrent patellar instability. Methods This was a pragmatic, open-label, two-arm feasibility randomised control trial (RCT) with an embedded interview component recruiting across three NHS sites comparing surgical treatment to a package of best conservative care; ‘Personalised Knee Therapy’ (PKT). The primary feasibility outcome was the recruitment rate per centre (expected rate 1 to 1.5 participants recruited each month). Secondary outcomes included the rate of follow-up (over 80% expected at 12 months) and a series of participant-reported outcomes taken at 3, 6 and 12 months following randomisation, including the Norwich Patellar Instability Score (NPIS), the Kujala Patellofemoral Disorder Score (KPDS), EuroQol-5D-5L, self-reported global assessment of change, satisfaction at each time point and resources use. Results We recruited 19 participants. Of these, 18 participants (95%) were followed-up at 12 months and 1 (5%) withdrew. One centre recruited at just over one case per month, one centre was unable to recruit, and one centre recruited at over one case per month after a change in participant screening approach. Ten participants were allocated into the PKT arm, with nine to the surgical arm. Mean Norwich Patellar Instability Score improved from 40.6 (standard deviation 22.1) to 28.2 (SD 25.4) from baseline to 12 months. Conclusion This feasibility trial identified a number of challenges and required a series of changes to ensure adequate recruitment and follow-up. These changes helped achieve a sufficient recruitment and follow-up rate. The revised trial design is feasible to be conducted as a definitive trial to answer this important clinical question for people with chronic patellar instability. Abstract
Abstract
Purpose: Statins may mediate suppression of molecular pathways conferring benefit in cancer. Statins have shown anti-tumor effects in preclinical studies and have been associated with decreased recurrence and improved disease-specific survival. While designed to target cholesterol biosynthesis, statins can also have liver, bone and brain effects. We collected data on statin use in the S0307 adjuvant bisphosphonate trial to test the hypothesis that statin use may decrease risk of recurrence to liver, bone and brain as well as second primary (contralateral) breast cancers, and may act synergistically with bisphosphonates to decrease the risk of recurrence to bone.
Patients and Methods: In S0307, 6097 patients diagnosed with Stage I-III breast cancer who had undergone surgery and were receiving adjuvant systemic therapy were randomized to receive zoledronic acid, clodronate, or ibandronate for 3 years. No significant difference was found in disease-free survival (DFS) among the 3 groups, including a sub-analysis of patients > age 55. Statin use was infrequent in younger women in S0307, consequently we analyzed statin use in those > age 55. Cox proportional hazard models were used to determine which variables were independently associated with DFS and to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).
Results: Among women aged ≥ 55 years, 684 (27%) reported taking a statin at baseline and 1,848 did not. Both groups were similar in terms of hormone receptor and HER2 status (p = 0.82). Median age in the statin group was 64.3 versus 61.0 years in the no statin group, mean BMI 31.2 v. 29.5, mean tumor size 2.1cm v. 2.3cm, negative lymph nodes 60% v. 54%, Stage I disease 47% v. 36%, and receipt of chemotherapy 62% v. 71% (all p < 0.01). In the statin group, 122 (17.8%) experienced a DFS event compared to 313 (16.9%) in the no statin group (HR 1.18, CI 0.95-1.46). No difference was observed by statin use in overall recurrence (p=0.28), distant recurrence (p=0.64), or recurrences to the bone (p=0.64), liver (p=0.38) or brain (p=0.65) at initial recurrence. There was no synergy between statin use and specific bisphosphonates.

Conclusions: We found no evidence that statins reduce risk of second primary breast cancers or distant metastases among post-menopausal women with early-stage breast cancer. Despite promising preclinical data, they did not appear to act in synergy with a specific bisphosphonate. Though women in the statin group had less advanced disease at study entry, statin use was not associated with improved DFS. Results are limited by lack of information about type of statin used, adherence, or initiation of statin in control group.

Abstract
Detection of nuclear-decay γ rays provides a sensitive thermometer of nova nucleosynthesis. The most intense γ-ray flux is thought to be annihilation radiation from the β^{+} decay of ^{18}F, which is destroyed prior to decay by the ^{18}F(p,α)^{15}O reaction. Estimates of ^{18}F production had been uncertain, however, because key near-threshold levels in the compound nucleus, ^{19}Ne, had yet to be identified. We report the first measurement of the ^{19}F(^{3}He,tγ)^{19}Ne reaction, in which the placement of two long-sought 3/2^{+} levels is suggested via triton-γ-γ coincidences. The precise determination of their resonance energies reduces the upper limit of the rate by a factor of 1.5-17 at nova temperatures and reduces the average uncertainty on the nova detection probability by a factor of 2.1.

Abstract
The primary challenge in directly measuring nuclear reaction rates near stellar energies is their small cross sections. The signal-to-background ratio in these complex experiments can be significantly improved by employing high-current (mA-range) beams and novel detection techniques. Therefore, the electron cyclotron resonance ion source at the Laboratory for Experimental Nuclear Astrophysics underwent a complete upgrade of its acceleration column and microwave system to obtain high-intensity, pulsed proton beams. The new column uses a compression design with O-ring seals for vacuum integrity. Its voltage gradient between electrode sections is produced by the parallel resistance of channels of chilled, deionized water. It also incorporates alternating, transverse magnetic fields for electron suppression and an axially adjustable beam extraction system. Following this upgrade, the operational bremsstrahlung radiation levels and high-voltage stability of the source were vastly improved, over 3.5 mA of target beam current was achieved, and an order-of-magnitude increase in normalized brightness was measured. Beam optics calculations, structural design, and further performance results for this source are presented.

Abstract
Polar metals, commonly defined by the coexistence of polar crystal structure and metallicity, are thought to be scarce because the long-range electrostatic fields favoring the polar structure are expected to be fully screened by the conduction electrons of a metal. Moreover, reducing from three to two dimensions, it remains an open question whether a polar metal can exist. Here we report on the realization of a room temperature two-dimensional polar metal of the B-site type in tri-color (tri-layer) superlattices BaTiO3/SrTiO3/LaTiO3. A combination of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy-loss spectroscopy, optical second harmonic generation, electrical transport, and first-principles calculations have revealed the microscopic mechanisms of periodic electric polarization, charge distribution, and orbital symmetry. Our results provide a route to creating all-oxide artificial non-centrosymmetric quasi-two-dimensional metals with exotic quantum states including coexisting ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and superconducting phases.

Abstract
AIMS Meniscal allograft transplantation is undertaken to improve pain and function in patients with a symptomatic meniscal deficient knee compartment. While case series have shown improvements in patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), its efficacy has not been rigorously evaluated. This study aimed to compare PROMs in patients having meniscal transplantation with those having personalized physiotherapy at 12 months. PATIENTS AND METHODS A single-centre assessor-blinded, comprehensive cohort study, incorporating a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) was performed on patients with a symptomatic compartment of the knee in which a (sub)total meniscectomy had previously been performed. They were randomized to be treated either with a meniscal allograft transplantation or personalized physiotherapy, and stratified for malalignment of the limb. They entered the preference groups if they were not willing to be randomized. The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score and Lysholm score and complications were collected at baseline and at four, eight and 12 months following the interventions. RESULTS A total of 36 patients entered the study; 21 were randomized and 15 chose their treatments. Their mean age was 28 years (range 17 to 46). The outcomes were similar in the randomized and preference groups, allowing pooling of data. At 12 months, the KOOS4 composite score (mean difference 12, p = 0.03) and KOOS subscales of pain (mean difference 15, p = 0.02) and activities of daily living (mean difference 18, p = 0.005) were significantly superior in the meniscal transplantation group. Other PROMs also favoured this group without reaching statistical significance. There were five complications in the meniscal transplantation and one in the physiotherapy groups. CONCLUSION This is the first study to compare meniscal allograft transplantation to non-operative treatment. The results provide the best quality evidence to date of the symptomatic benefits of meniscal allograft transplantation in the short term, but a multicentre RCT is required to investigate this question further. Abstract
The preparation of inorganic nanomaterials with a desired structure and specific properties requires the ability to strictly control their size, shape and composition. A series of chemical reactions with platinum compounds carried out within the 1.5 nm wide channel of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have demonstrated the ability of SWNTs to act as both a very effective reaction vessel and a template for the formation of nanocrystals of platinum di-iodide and platinum di-sulphide, materials that are difficult to synthesise in the form of nanoparticles by traditional synthetic methods. The stepwise synthesis inside nanotubes has enabled the formation of Pt compounds to be monitored at each step of the reaction by aberration-corrected high resolution transmission electron microscopy (AC-HRTEM), verifying the atomic structures of the products, and by an innovative combination of fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (FD-XAS) and Raman spectroscopy, monitoring the oxidation states of the platinum guest-compounds within the nanotube and the vibrational properties of the host-SWNT, respectively. This coupling of complementary spectroscopies reveals that electron transfer between the guest-compound and the host-SWNT can occur in either direction depending on the composition and structure of the guest. A new approach for nanoscale synthesis in nanotubes developed in this study utilises the versatile coordination chemistry of Pt which has enabled the insertion of the required chemical elements (e.g. metal and halogens or chalcogens) into the nanoreactor in the correct proportions for the controlled formation of PtI2 and PtS2 with the correct stoichiometry.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a femoral nerve block and a periarticular infiltration in the management of early post-operative pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). PATIENTS AND METHODS A pragmatic, single centre, two arm parallel group, patient blinded, randomised controlled trial was undertaken. All patients due for TKA were eligible. Exclusion criteria included contraindications to the medications involved in the study and patients with a neurological abnormality of the lower limb. Patients received either a femoral nerve block with 75 mg of 0.25% levobupivacaine hydrochloride around the nerve, or periarticular infiltration with 150 mg of 0.25% levobupivacaine hydrochloride, 10 mg morphine sulphate, 30 mg ketorolac trometamol and 0.25 mg of adrenaline all diluted with 0.9% saline to make a volume of 150 ml. RESULTS A total of 264 patients were recruited and data from 230 (88%) were available for the primary analysis. Intention-to-treat analysis of the primary outcome measure of a visual analogue score for pain on the first post-operative day, prior to physiotherapy, was similar in both groups. The mean difference was -0.7 (95% confidence interval (CI) -5.9 to 4.5; p = 0.834). The periarticular group used less morphine in the first post-operative day compared with the femoral nerve block group (74%, 95% CI 55 to 99). The femoral nerve block group reported 39 adverse events, of which 27 were serious, in 31 patients and the periarticular group reported 51 adverse events, of which 38 were serious, in 42 patients up to six weeks post-operatively. None of the adverse events were directly attributed to either of the interventions under investigation. CONCLUSION Periarticular infiltration is a viable and safe alternative to femoral nerve block for the early post-operative relief of pain following TKA. Abstract
Abstract
Dietary supplement use is high among breast cancer survivors. One compound natural to cruciferous vegetables, diindolylmethane (DIM), is among the supplements commonly used. This bioactive compound has significant experimental evidence for bioactivity in breast chemoprevention. Sparse evidence in the form of well-designed human clinical trials exist to test its efficacy or safety. Methods: In this double-blind placebo-controlled study women taking tamoxifen for breast cancer primary or tertiary prevention were randomly assigned to receive 150 mg DIM (BioResponse(BR)-DIM) twice daily or a placebo for a minimum period of 12 months. Primary outcome was change in urinary estrogen metabolites 2-hydroxyestrone and 16α-hydroxyestrone (baseline to 6 weeks, 6 and 12 months). Secondary endpoints included breast density by mammogram and fat:water ratio MRI (baseline to 12 months) and serum estrogens (baseline to 6, 12 months). Safety data were also evaluated, including tamoxifen metabolites. Results: Adherence to study pills was >91% by pill count and urinary DIM metabolite assessment. In participants assigned DIM there was a significant and sustained shift in urinary estrogen metabolism favoring a higher 2-OH:16α-OH ratio; sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) was also increased. No change in breast density was demonstrated. Safety analysis showed no appreciable differences in adverse events by treatment arm; however, tamoxifen metabolism for the parent compound as well as endoxifen and 4-OH endoxifen were appreciably reduced in women assigned to the DIM arm. Conclusions In this first large study of DIM in the setting of breast cancer chemoprevention, a favorable shift in estrogen metabolism and SHBG was demonstrated. However, the reduction in tamoxifen metabolites raises concern regarding the potential interaction between DIM and tamoxifen, an area in need of continued research. Impact Given the widespread and generally unsupported use of dietary supplementation by breast cancer survivors, these data will help to inform the use of DIM as a dietary supplement for breast cancer patients receiving tamoxifen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Robust data on patient-reported outcome measures comparing treatments for clinically localized prostate cancer are lacking. We investigated the effects of active monitoring, radical prostatectomy, and radical radiotherapy with hormones on patient-reported outcomes. METHODS We compared patient-reported outcomes among 1643 men in the Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment (ProtecT) trial who completed questionnaires before diagnosis, at 6 and 12 months after randomization, and annually thereafter. Patients completed validated measures that assessed urinary, bowel, and sexual function and specific effects on quality of life, anxiety and depression, and general health. Cancer-related quality of life was assessed at 5 years. Complete 6-year data were analyzed according to the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS The rate of questionnaire completion during follow-up was higher than 85% for most measures. Of the three treatments, prostatectomy had the greatest negative effect on sexual function and urinary continence, and although there was some recovery, these outcomes remained worse in the prostatectomy group than in the other groups throughout the trial. The negative effect of radiotherapy on sexual function was greatest at 6 months, but sexual function then recovered somewhat and was stable thereafter; radiotherapy had little effect on urinary continence. Sexual and urinary function declined gradually in the active-monitoring group. Bowel function was worse in the radiotherapy group at 6 months than in the other groups but then recovered somewhat, except for the increasing frequency of bloody stools; bowel function was unchanged in the other groups. Urinary voiding and nocturia were worse in the radiotherapy group at 6 months but then mostly recovered and were similar to the other groups after 12 months. Effects on quality of life mirrored the reported changes in function. No significant differences were observed among the groups in measures of anxiety, depression, or general health-related or cancer-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS In this analysis of patient-reported outcomes after treatment for localized prostate cancer, patterns of severity, recovery, and decline in urinary, bowel, and sexual function and associated quality of life differed among the three groups. Abstract
Controversy regarding the optimal design for neonatal intensive care has existed for more than 20 years. Recent evidence confirms that in comparison with the traditional open-bay design, the single-room facility provides for improved control of excessive noise and light, improved staff and parental satisfaction with care and equal, or possibly reduced, cost of care. Single-room care was not associated with any increase in adverse outcomes. To optimize long term developmental outcomes, single-room care must be augmented with appropriate developmental therapy and programs to actively support parental involvement.

Abstract
We compared speed matches for pairs of stimuli that moved in opposite directions (upward and downward). Stimuli were elliptical patches (2 deg horizontally by 1 deg vertically) of horizontal sinusoidal gratings of spatial frequency 2 cycles deg−1. Two sequential 380 ms foveal presentations were compared. One of each pair of gratings (the standard) moved at 4 Hz (2 deg s−1), the other (the test) moved at a rate determined by a simple up - down staircase. The point of subjectively equal speed was calculated from the average of the last eight reversals. The task was to fixate a central point and to determine which one of the pair appeared to move faster. Eight of ten observers perceived the upward drifting grating as moving faster than a grating moving downward but otherwise identical. On average (N = 10), when the standard moved downward, it was matched by a test moving upward at 94.7± 1.7(SE)% of the standard speed, and when the standard moved upward it was matched by a test moving downward at 105.1± 2.3(SE)% of the standard speed. On extending this paradigm over a range of spatial (1.5 to 13.5 cycles deg−1) and temporal (1.5 to 13.5 Hz) frequencies, preliminary results (N = 4) suggest that, under the conditions of our experiment, upward motion is seen as faster than downward motion for speeds greater than ∼1 deg s−1, but the effect appears to reverse at speeds below ∼1 deg s−1 with downward motion perceived as faster. Given that an up - down asymmetry has been observed by other investigators for the optokinetic response, both perceptual and oculomotor contributions to this phenomenon deserve exploration.

Abstract
The thermonuclear ^{30}P(p,γ)^{31}S reaction rate is critical for modeling the final elemental and isotopic abundances of ONe nova nucleosynthesis, which affect the calibration of proposed nova thermometers and the identification of presolar nova grains, respectively. Unfortunately, the rate of this reaction is essentially unconstrained experimentally, because the strengths of key ^{31}S proton capture resonance states are not known, largely due to uncertainties in their spins and parities. Using the β decay of ^{31}Cl, we have observed the β-delayed γ decay of a ^{31}S state at E_{x}=6390.2(7) keV, with a ^{30}P(p,γ)^{31}S resonance energy of E_{r}=259.3(8) keV, in the middle of the ^{30}P(p,γ)^{31}S Gamow window for peak nova temperatures. This state exhibits isospin mixing with the nearby isobaric analog state at E_{x}=6279.0(6) keV, giving it an unambiguous spin and parity of 3/2^{+} and making it an important l=0 resonance for proton capture on ^{30}P.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the effectiveness of inpatient care for young people with co-morbid mental illness and intellectual disability (ID). This study aims to compare the demographics and outcome of young people with mental illness with or without ID admitted to psychiatric hospital. A secondary aim is to look into the outcome of those with ID admitted to general mental health young people's units. METHOD Data were collected on the outcome of young people's admissions to specialist ID and general adolescent mental health units as part of a larger quality improvement project run by the College Centre for Quality Improvement. Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Children and Adolescents (HoNOSCA) scores were completed by local clinical staff at admission and discharge on 38 young people with and 113 people without ID from 14 units. RESULTS Young people with mental disorders significantly improved clinically over the admission whether or not they had ID. There were no differences between the groups in age or use of the Mental Health Act but people admitted with ID were more likely to be male and had longer lengths of stay. Admission to a general adolescent unit was associated with clinical improvement for people with ID. CONCLUSIONS This study needs replication because of the small sample and incomplete data but it suggests that young people with ID and mental disorders significantly improve clinically when admitted to hospital as do their non-disabled peers.

Abstract
A new materials characterization system developed at the XMaS beamline, located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France, is presented. We show that this new capability allows to measure the atomic structural evolution (crystallography) of piezoelectric materials whilst simultaneously measuring the overall strain characteristics and electrical response to dynamically (ac) applied external stimuli.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Subtotal or total meniscectomy in the medial or lateral compartment of the knee results in a high risk of future osteoarthritis. Meniscal allograft transplantation has been performed for over thirty years with the scientifically plausible hypothesis that it functions in a similar way to a native meniscus. It is thought that a meniscal allograft transplant has a chondroprotective effect, reducing symptoms and the long-term risk of osteoarthritis. However, this hypothesis has never been tested in a high-quality study on human participants. This study aims to address this shortfall by performing a pilot randomised controlled trial within the context of a comprehensive cohort study design. METHODS Patients will be randomised to receive either meniscal transplant or a non-operative, personalised knee therapy program. MRIs will be performed every four months for one year. The primary endpoint is the mean change in cartilage volume in the weight-bearing area of the knee at one year post intervention. Secondary outcome measures include the mean change in cartilage thickness, T2 maps, patient-reported outcome measures, health economics assessment and complications. Abstract
Twin studies indicate that dyscalculia (or mathematical disability) is caused partly by a genetic component, which is yet to be understood at the molecular level. Recently, a coding variant (rs133885) in the myosin-18B gene was shown to be associated with mathematical abilities with a specific effect among children with dyslexia. This association represents one of the most significant genetic associations reported to date for mathematical abilities and the only one reaching genome-wide statistical significance. We conducted a replication study in different cohorts to assess the effect of rs133885 maths-related measures. The study was conducted primarily using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), (N = 3819). We tested additional cohorts including the York Cohort, the Specific Language Impairment Consortium (SLIC) cohort and the Raine Cohort, and stratified them for a definition of dyslexia whenever possible. We did not observe any associations between rs133885 in myosin-18B and mathematical abilities among individuals with dyslexia or in the general population. Our results suggest that the myosin-18B variant is unlikely to be a main factor contributing to mathematical abilities.

Abstract
Despite the recognition that cortical thickness is heritable and correlates with intellectual ability in children and adolescents, the genes contributing to individual differences in these traits remain unknown. We conducted a large-scale association study in 1583 adolescents to identify genes affecting cortical thickness. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; n=54,837) within genes whose expression changed between stages of growth and differentiation of a human neural stem cell line were selected for association analyses with average cortical thickness. We identified a variant, rs7171755, associating with thinner cortex in the left hemisphere (P=1.12 × 10(-)(7)), particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. Localized effects of this SNP on cortical thickness differently affected verbal and nonverbal intellectual abilities. The rs7171755 polymorphism acted in cis to affect expression in the human brain of the synaptic cell adhesion glycoprotein-encoding gene NPTN. We also found that cortical thickness and NPTN expression were on average higher in the right hemisphere, suggesting that asymmetric NPTN expression may render the left hemisphere more sensitive to the effects of NPTN mutations, accounting for the lateralized effect of rs7171755 found in our study. Altogether, our findings support a potential role for regional synaptic dysfunctions in forms of intellectual deficits.
