Abstract
Objective: To explore the impact of primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) on patient's quality of life and emotional well-being, and both the physician and the patient's perception of the treatment. Methods: This study was a Chinese Subgroup analysis of I-WISh survey, including 102 physicians and 286 ITP patients invited to complete the survey. A descriptive analysis of the results of the physician-patient survey was conducted in three parts: symptoms, impact of ITP on quality of life and emotion, and treatment perception. Results: Fatigue and anxiety about unstable platelet counts were the main symptoms after treatment. Physicians reported inadequate frequency of anxiety and fatigue. In terms of quality of life, over 90.0% of patients thought that ITP had a negative impact on their working life/studies, daily tasks, energy, capacity to exercise, and sexual life. With regard to emotion, 60.8% (174/286) patients thought that ITP had a greater impact on overall emotion, concerns about the fluctuation in platelet level (74.8%, 214/286) , disease itself (71.7%, 205/286) and disease progression (68.9%, 197/286) were the common issues, which were similar to the physicians' evaluations. Both physicians and patients agreed that reducing spontaneous bleeding, maintaining a healthy blood count and improving quality of life were the top three important treatment goals. Physicians considered reducing bleeding risk as the most important factor for decision making. Physicians believed that patients receiving glucocorticoid (54.9%, 56/102) were most likely to succeed in achieving sustained response while patients had the best response to thrombopoietin receptor agonist (TPO-RA) treatment, with about 83.9% (240/286) being satisfied with the overall effectiveness of TPO-RA. Conclusions: Physicians in the I-WISh Chinese subgroup had low awareness on patients' fatigue and anxiety. The quality of life and emotion of patients were significantly negatively affected by ITP. There are differences in the selection of treatments between physicians and patients, suggesting that physicians should raise concerns about the quality of life of ITP patients and make individualized treatment options through physician-patient shared decisions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To discuss the diagnostic value of carotid atherosclerosis score for ischemic stroke. METHODS In the study, 151 patients with ischemic stroke were enrolled, who were diagnosed by cranial CT scan or cranial MRI scan, and examined with carotid duplex ultrasound, and 151 healthy check-up cases matched by age and sex were chosen as control group, who were excluded ischemic stroke by cranial CT scan or cranial MRI scan. All the control cases were examined with carotid duplex ultrasound also. Intima-media thickness (IMT), the number of carotid plaques, the size of each plaque, the location of the plaque and each plaque's echo, texture, surface regularity were estimated by carotid duplex ultrasound. RESULTS The IMT of the case group and the control group were (0.946±0.185) mm and (0.863±0.148) mm, and there were significant differences (P<0.001); The parameters of arterial plaque correlated with ischemic stroke were plaque's echo, texture and surface regularity, however the plaque size and location were not correlated with ischemic stroke. The median and quartile of carotid artery plaque score were 3 and 2 respectively in case group, 1 and 2 respectively in control group, and there were significant differences (P<0.001); The parameters of carotid arterial atherosclerosis associated with ischemic stroke were carotid artery plaque score,carotid stenosis degree and IMT, but not the number of carotid plaques. The median and quartile of carotid arterial atherosclerosis score were 5 and 4 respectively in case group, 2 and 4 respectively in control group, and there were significant differences (P<0.001); The area under the curve (AUC) for IMT, the number of carotid plaques, carotid artery plaque score and carotid arterial atherosclerosis score were 0.679, 0.677, 0.704 and 0.805,respectively (P<0.001). The accuracy of carotid atherosclerosis score was the highest. CONCLUSION Carotid artery plaque score and carotid atherosclerosis score can be used for the diagnosis of ischemic stroke, and the accuracy of carotid atherosclerosis score is higher.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Helicobacter pylori-infected gastric mucosa evolves through stages of chronic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia (IM), glandular atrophy (GA), and dysplasia before carcinoma develops. We studied if H. pylori eradication would alter the course of premalignant histologic changes in the stomach. METHODS Volunteers from the Yantai County in China underwent upper endoscopy with biopsy specimens obtained from the antrum and corpus. H. pylori-infected subjects were randomized to receive either a 1-week course of omeprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin (OAC) or placebo. At 1 year, endoscopies with biopsies were repeated. RESULTS A total of 587 H. pylori-infected subjects were randomized to OAC (n = 295) and placebo (n = 292). At 1 year, H. pylori was eradicated in 226 subjects assigned to OAC. In the placebo group, 245 patients remained H. pylori infected. Analysis of paired samples obtained from the same patients showed that acute and chronic gastritis decreased in both the antrum and corpus after H. pylori eradication (P<0.001) and activity of IM decreased in antrum (P = 0.014). In the H. pylori-infected group, antral biopsy specimens had more pronounced acute gastritis (P = 0.01), whereas corpus specimens showed increased acute and chronic gastritis (P<0.001) and a marginal increase in GA (P = 0.052). When histologic changes were compared between the 2 groups, decrease in acute and chronic gastritis was more frequent after H. pylori eradication (P<0.001) but changes in IM were similar. In the H. pylori-infected group, increase in GA was seen in the corpus (P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS At 1 year, H. pylori eradication is beneficial in preventing progression of pathologic changes of the gastric mucosa.

Abstract
We have examined the tarsus (foot) and tibial segments of the cockroach leg to identify structures that contain the elastic protein resilin. The presence of resilin was tested using the conventional criteria of fluorescent emission at 420 nm under UV illumination and histological staining of wholemount tissues by toluidine blue. We have also developed a simple method of confirming identification of resilin through changes in its fluorescence that occur with alteration of pH of the surrounding medium. Using a commonly available excitation filter that only passes light at >330 nm, we found that the emission was present at neutral pH but was eliminated at low pH. It then reversibly reappeared when medium of higher pH was restored. This effect is attributable to a known shift in the absorption maximum of amino acids of resilin that occurs in acidic media (from 330 to 285 nm). The accuracy of this method of identification was confirmed by examination of ligaments of the wing hinge, which has previously been shown to contain resilin in a number of insects. Using these techniques, we have identified resilin in association with ligaments at the tibio-tarsal joint and in the articulation between the fourth and fifth tarsal segments of the leg. The anatomical arrangement of these ligaments suggests that they could aid in the generation of leg movements during walking by functioning as elastic antagonists to the actions of leg muscles. The method of identification we have devised could readily be applied to aid in the localization of resilin in other animals.

Abstract
The objective of the current study is to discuss the problems related to how data is used to calculate Years Lost with Disability (YLD) with the method recommended by the World Bank. The study includes collecting useful data, estimating disease duration and average age of disease onset, adjusting incidence and prevalence data by means of a software programme, DISMOD (Harvard University Incidence & Prevalence Model), and assessing the importance of YLD calculation for different diseases. Remission and fatality rates of 3 diseases were estimated by experts at 2 round consultations. Incidence rates, disease duration and average age of disease onset were calculated and adjusted by DISMOD. YLD due to schizophrenia is the highest among 4 diseases in two regions. YLD is 18.88% in disability adjusted life year for 4 diseases in Xiacheng District, and 19.97% in Fuyang County. Available data can be used for the calculation of YLD after being adjusted. DISMOD is a useful instrument to test the internal consistency of incidence, prevalence, remission and fatality rate. The adjusted data are acceptable to experts and DISMOD. To get rational remission and fatality rates, we can use a cohort method through expert consultations. To reflect overall burden of disease, YLD calculation should be used.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A higher incidence of prostate cancer is observed in the Western world than in Asian countries. Although it is relatively rare in China, an increased incidence has been reported in recent years. Studies in high-risk populations have suggested that dietary fat may play a role in enhancing the risk of developing prostate cancer. However, limited epidemiologic study has never examined the role of diet in low risk populations. METHODS A case-control study was conducted in 12 cities in China to evaluate the relationship between dietary factors and prostate cancer risk. We conducted personal interviews with 133 histopathologically confirmed prostate cancer cases diagnosed between 1989 to 1992 and 265 neighborhood controls of similar age. RESULTS Cases were more likely than controls to consume food with high fat and from animal sources (p < 0.01). The daily fat intake and the percentage of energy from fat were statistically significantly higher among cases than among controls (p < 0.01). The adjusted odds ratio for total fat between lowest quartiles and highest quartiles was OR = 3.6 (95 percent C.I. 1.8-7.2); for saturated fat, OR = 2.9 (95 percent C.I. 1.5-5.7); and for unsaturated fat, OR = 3.3 (95 percent C.I. 1.7-6.3). DISCUSSION The data suggest that dietary fat, both saturated and unsaturated, are associated with an increased risk for prostate cancer in a low risk population.

Abstract
N-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) is an agricultural fungicide that induces nephrotoxicity as its major toxicity. NDPS is also a more potent nephrotoxicant in female than in male rats. The purpose of this study was to examine the nephrotoxic potential of the two NDPS metabolites N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinimide (NDHS) and N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-hydroxysuccinamic acid (2-NDHSA) in age-matched male and female Fischer 344 rats to determine if gender differences exist for the nephrotoxicity induced by the two NDPS metabolites. Rats (4 per group) were administered a single intraperitoneal (ip) injection of NDHS or 2-NDHSA (0.025 or 0.05 mmol/kg) or vehicle, and renal function was monitored for 48 h. Neither compound induced significant nephrotoxicity in male rats at the doses tested. However, in female rats both metabolites induced marked nephrotoxicity at the 0.05 mmol/kg dose level, and treatment with 0.025 mmol/kg 2-NDHSA induced some changes in renal function (transient diuresis, transient proteinuria, decreased organic ion accumulation). Little effect on renal function was induced in females by treatment with 0.025 mmol/kg NDHS. At toxic levels in female rats, the renal lesions were located primarily in the S2 and S3 segments of the proximal tubule. These results indicate that, like the parent compound, gender differences exist in the nephrotoxic potential of NDHS and 2-NDHSA. The results also suggest that in females, as in males, NDPS nephrotoxicity is mediated via NDHS and/or 2-NDHSA. However, it is not clear if the ultimate nephrotoxicant species following NDPS exposure is different in males and females or if the same ultimate nephrotoxicant species is produced in both species but handled differently by male and female kidneys. Thus, further studies are needed to determine the exact nature of the ultimate nephrotoxicant species and the mechanisms of the observed gender differences.

Abstract
A new algorithm for cylindrical Bessel functions that is similar to the one for spherical Bessel functions allows us to compute scattering functions for infinitely long cylinders covering sizes ka = 2πa/λ up to 8000 through the use of only an eight-digit single-precision machine computation. The scattering function and complex extinction coefficient of a finite cylinder that is seen near perpendicular incidence are derived from those of an infinitely long cylinder by the use of Huygens's principle. The result, which contains no arbitrary normalization factor, agrees quite well with analog microwave measurements of both extinction and scattering for such cylinders, even for an aspect ratio p = l/(2a) as low as 2. Rainbows produced by cylinders are similar to those for spherical drops but are brighter and have a lower contrast.

Abstract
Vasectomy has been reported to be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer in western countries. A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in 12 cities in China to evaluate the relationship between vasectomy and prostate cancer risk in China, a low-risk country with rising incidence and increasing use of vasectomy. Interviews were conducted with 138 histologically confirmed prostate cancer cases diagnosed during 1989-1992 and 638 controls (158 hospital cancer, 158 hospital noncancer, and 322 neighborhood controls) of similar ages. Vasectomy at least 10 years prior to interview was reported by 10% of the cases versus 3% of the controls. Odds ratios for prostate cancer associated with vasectomy were 2.0 (95% confidence interval, 0.7-6.1), 3.3 (95% confidence interval, 1.0-11.3), and 6.7 (95% confidence interval, 2.1-21.6), respectively, when hospital cancer, hospital noncancer, and neighborhood controls were used for comparison. Although detection bias is of concern, the data suggest that in China, men with a history of vasectomy may experience an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Abstract
Halogenated anilines and aminophenols are nephrotoxicants and hepatotoxicants in mammals. The purpose of this study was to determine the in vivo and in vitro nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic potential of 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol, a putative metabolite of 3,5-dichloroaniline. In the in vivo experiments, male Fischer 344 rats (four/group) were administered a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol (0.25, 0.38 or 0.50 mmol/kg) or vehicle (dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), 1.0 ml/kg) and renal and hepatic function monitored for 48 h. Only minor changes in function or morphology were observed in the 0.25 mmol/kg treatment group. However, in the 0.38 mmol/kg treatment group evidence of both nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity were evident. Nephrotoxicity was characterized by increased proteinuria, glucosuria, hematuria, elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and kidney weight, decreased p-aminohippurate (PAH) accumulation and proximal tubular necrosis in the corticomedullary region of the kidney. Hepatotoxicity was characterized by elevated plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT/GPT) activity and liver weight. Animals administered the 0.5 mmol/kg dose died within 24 h. In the in vitro experiments, the effect of 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol on organic ion accumulation, gluconeogenesis and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage was quantitated in liver and/or renal cortical slices. Organic anion accumulation was inhibited in renal cortical slices by 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol bath concentrations of 5 x 10(-6) M or higher, while organic cation uptake was decreased at 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol bath concentrations of 1 x 10(-5) M or greater. Renal and hepatic pyruvate-stimulated gluconeogenesis were inhibited and renal LDH leakage increased at 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol bath concentrations of 5 x 10(-5) M or greater. Increased LDH leakage from liver slices was not observed. These results demonstrate that 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol is a nephrotoxicant and hepatotoxicant in vivo and in vitro and that the kidney is more susceptible to 4-amino-2,6-dichlorophenol toxicity than the liver.

Abstract
The agricultural fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) is an established nephrotoxicant in male Fischer 344 rats at i.p. doses of > or = mmol/kg. Since gender differences often exist in the susceptibility to toxicants, the nephrotoxic potential of NDPS was examined in female Fischer 344 rats. Rats (4-5/group) were administered NDPS (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, or 1.0 mmol/kg, i.p.) or vehicle (sesame oil, 2.5 ml/kg) and renal function monitored for 48 h. At a dose of 0.1 mmol/kg, NDPS had no effect on renal function. However, administration of NDPS at a dose of 0.2 or 0.4 mmol/kg resulted in marked nephrotoxicity characterized by diuresis, increased proteinuria, glucosuria, hematuria, elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and kidney weight, decreased organic ion accumulation and proximal tubular necrosis. NDPS treatment of 1.0 mmol/kg resulted in oliguric renal failure rather than polyuric renal failure in 3 of 4 rats. Proximal tubular damage was observed primarily in the S3 segment of the proximal tubule in NDPS-treated female rats, while in male rats the S1 and S2 segments are the initial renal targets. These results demonstrate that female Fischer 344 rats are more susceptible to NDPS nephrotoxicity than male Fischer 344 rats and that the site of the renal lesion is gender dependent.

Abstract
Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods were developed for, arsenic, selenium, copper, zinc and iron in hair samples. Data from blackfoot disease patients at five clinical stages were compared with those from healthy controls. The copper and zinc concentrations showed only slight differences in all clinical stages, which indicated the less relation to blackfoot disease. The decrease of selenium and iron in all stages was attributed to the antagonistic effect of arsenic; arsenic increased in the first and second stages, but decreased in the later stages. The decrease of selenium and iron during the progression of the disease is thought to be due to persistence of the antagonistic effect of arsenic in the initial stages, so that very low concentrations of selenium are found in the advanced stages, despite the later decrease of arsenic. There was also a progressive decrease of iron with advance of the disease, and the later stages also showed a decrease in haemoglobin. It was shown that arsenic is a major cause of blackfoot disease, and that it antagonises selenium and iron, which decreased in the advanced clinical stages of the disease.

Abstract

Data from blackfoot disease patients in five clinical stages were compared with those from healthy controls. Copper concentrations were the same for all clinical stages. Arsenic increased in the initial three stages but decreased thereafter, although arsenic was previously considered to be the major causative agent of the disease. The decrease of arsenic in the later stages was attributed to the antagonistic effect of selenium, and the decrease of iron during the progress of the disease is thought to be due to the antagonistic effect of arsenic in the initial stages and the loose of haemoglobin in the later stages.

Abstract
Glare points are the intensity maxima seen when a water drop illuminated by a wide beam is viewed from a certain direction and imaged. We show that good resolution in both the scattering angle and the glare point position can be achieved only if the size parameter x = 2pia/lambda is >>1 and that the positions of the glare points can be computed by a Fourier transform from the familiar Lorenz-Mie scattering function. Sample computations made with x = 10,000 and x = 20,000 are presented. Glare points corresponding to rays that have suffered as many as 15 internal reflections can be identified, in agreement with experimental findings.

Abstract
A numerical implementation of the volume integral equation formulation of electromagnetic scattering is used to calculate the scattered intensity of various particles. The numerical method has the capability of determining the scattering by arbitrarily shaped and inhomogeneous scatterers. Results of calculations are presented for scatterers which have not only a size comparable to the wavelength of the incident radiation but are also irregular and inhomogeneous. The theoretical results are compared to microwave analog measurements performed at the microwave facility of the Space Astronomy Laboratory (ISST). It is found that experiment and theory agree well. The accuracy and versatility of the numerical method and the analog measurements are illustrated. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the numerical method are discussed.

Abstract
Efficient and accurate computation of the scattered intensity pattern by the Mie formulas is now feasible for size parameters up to x = 50,000 at least, which in visual light means spherical drops with diameters up to 6 mm. We present a method for evaluating the Mie coefficients from the ratios between Riccati-Bessel and Neumann functions of successive order. We probe the applicability of the Airy approximation, which we generalize to rainbows of arbitrary p (number of internal reflections = p - 1), by comparing the Mie and Airy intensity patterns. Millimeter size water drops show a match in all details, including the position and intensity of the supernumerary maxima and the polarization. A fairly good match is still seen for drops of 0.1 mm. A small spread in sizes helps to smooth out irrelevant detail. The dark band between the rainbows is used to test more subtle features. We conclude that this band contains not only externally reflected light (p = 0) but also a sizable contribution f rom the p = 6 and p = 7 rainbows, which shift rapidly with wavelength. The higher the refractive index, the closer both theories agree on the first primary rainbow (p = 2) peak for drop diameters as small as 0.02 mm. This may be useful in supporting experimental work.

Abstract
A geriatric day hospital (GDH) was developed in a community hospital to meet the complex medical and social needs of the frail elderly. A review of medical records (n = 273) and interviews with referring physicians (n = 42 on 96 patients) revealed that the GDH provided intensive outpatient care, geriatric assessment, rehabilitation, and an alternative to hospitalization. In all, 21% of physician-referred patients would have been hospitalized without the GDH, 7% would have had longer hospital stays, and care would have been deferred for 18%.

Abstract
Use of H3-thymidine autoradiography and unilateral vomeronasal (VN) axotomy has permitted us to demonstrate directly the existence of VN stem cells in the adult garter snake and to trace continuous bipolar neuron development and migration in the normal VN and deafferentated VN epithelium in the same animal. The vomeronasal epithelium and olfactory epithelium of adult garter snakes are both capable of incorporating H3-thymidine. In the sensory epithelium of the vomeronasal organ, H3-thymidine-labeled cells were initially restricted to the base of the undifferentiated cell layer in animals surviving 1 day following H3-thymidine injection. With increasing survival time, labeled cells progressively migrated vertically within the receptor cell column toward the apex of the bipolar neuron layer. In both the normal and denervated VN epithelium, labeled cells were observed through the 56 days of postoperative survival. In the normal epithelium, labeled cells were always located within the matrix of the intact receptor cell columns. However, labeled cells of the denervated epithelium were always located at the apical front of the newly formed cell mass following depletion of the original neuronal cell population. In addition, at postoperative days 28 and 56, labeled cells of the denervated VN epithelium achieved neuronal differentiation and maturation by migrating much farther away from the base of the receptor cell column than the labeled cells on the normal, unoperated contralateral side. This study directly demonstrates that basal cells initially incorporating H3-thymidine are indeed stem cells of the VN epithelium in adult garter snakes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
We have measured the differential scattering cross sections (phase functions I(22)) and the normalized extinction and scattering cross sections (efficiences) of composite spherical particles. The size parameter x = 2pir/lambda was around 2pi. Composite spheres consisted of nonabsorbing matrix containing a small amount (1.6 and 2.7% by volume) of highly absorbing inclusions. Such composite particles may represent a realistic model of fog or cloud droplets containing small amounts of carbon or a composite atmospheric aerosol particle. We have compared measured data with those calculated using seven different effective medium approximations. We have found that the approximations of Bruggeman and Maxwell Garnett, the generalization of dynamic effective medium approximation derived by Chylek and Srivastava, and the experimental waveguide method of determination of the effective refractive index lead to an acceptable agreement between calculated and measured values. The reduced x(2) values for these approximations ranged between 0.6 and 2.0. The remaining three approximations (volume averages of refractive indices or dielectric constants and the Maxwell Garnett relation with matrix and inclusion materials interchanged) lead to reduced x(2) values between 4.0 and 12.0 demonstrating characteristics.

A method for calculating the electric field scattered from a helical dielectric target is compared to an equivalent experiment. The wavelength of the incident light is 3.18 cm, and the right-handed helix has a radius of 1.83 cm and wire radius of 0.24 cm, a pitch of 0.553 cm, and seven turns. The index of refraction of, the target is 1.626-i 0.012. A brief description of the Shifrin theory generalized to this application is given along with a discussion of the experiment, and the experimental intensities are compared to the first-order theory.

Abstract
N-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS) is an experimental agricultural fungicide which has been shown to be a selective nephrotoxin. The purpose of this study was to determine if a NDPS metabolite contributes to acute NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity. Male Sprague-Dawley or Fischer 344 rats were pretreated with a microsomal enzyme inducer [phenobarbital (PB) or 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC)] or inhibitor [cobalt chloride (CoCl2) or piperonyl butoxide (PIBX)] followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of NDPS (0.2, 0.4 or 1.0 mmol/kg) or vehicle (sesame oil, 2.5 ml/kg). Renal function was monitored at 24 and 48 h. CoCl2 or PIBX pretreatment reduced NDPS-induced diuresis, proteinuria and hematuria, and reduced the increases seen in the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and kidney weight. NDPS-induced decreases in organic ion accumulation were not markedly altered by CoCl2 or PIBX pretreatment. PB pretreatment enhanced all NDPS- (0.2 mmol/kg) induced renal effects, while 3-MC pretreatment protected against NDPS-induced diuresis, proteinuria, hematuria, and increases in the BUN concentration observed in both rat strains. Kidney weight and organic ion uptake changes were not substantially different between NDPS-treated rats with or without 3-MC pretreatment. It was concluded that a metabolite(s) contributes to or is responsible for acute NDPS-induced nephrotoxicity and that at least 1 toxic metabolite might be of extrarenal origin.

Abstract
Phensuximide is a succinimide antiepileptic drug useful in the treatment of petit mal epilepsy. Phensuximide has been reported to be nephrotoxic in man but not in animals. In the present study, the effects of single and subacute administration for seven days of phensuximide on renal function and urinary tract morphology were evaluated in Sprague-Dawley and Fischer 344 rats. Single administration of phensuximide (1.25 mmol/kg, ip) induced mild changes in renal function (trace hematuria, increased proteinuria and decreased p-aminohippurate uptake). No morphological changes were observed at 24 hr. Subacute administration of phensuximide (0.6 mmol/kg/day, ip) produced diuresis in the Sprague-Dawley rat, but little functional evidence of nephrotoxicity. Renal morphological changes in Sprague-Dawley rats were seen primarily in distal segments of the nephrons. These changes were characterized by distensions of the basal infoldings, apical protrusions, and occlusion of some lumen. In the Fischer 344 rat, subacute phensuximide administration (0.3 or 0.6 mmol/kg/day, ip) resulted in transient hematuria and proteinuria, but no change in the other renal function parameters studied. Renal morphological changes observed in Fischer 344 rats occurred primarily in proximal tubular cells. Damaged cells were characterized by large vacuoles at the basal infoldings, accumulations of opaque granules, migration of nuclei to the lumenal membranes, occlusion of the lumen and/or loss of the brush border. Abstract
Aniline (A) and its monochlorophenyl derivatives (2-CA, 3-CA and 4-CA) are widely-used chemical intermediates. In the present study, the in vivo and in vitro nephrotoxic potential of these compounds was assessed in Fischer 344 rats. In the in vivo experiments, rats were administered a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of an aniline (0.4, 1.0 or 1.5 mmol/kg) or 0.9% saline (2.0 ml/kg, i.p.), and renal function monitored at 24 and 48 h. 2-CA was the only compound tested which decreased urine volume, elevated the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration and depressed both basal and lactatestimulated p-aminohippurate (PAH) accumulation by renal cortical slices at the 1.0 mmol/ kg dose. Similar results were produced following 3- and 4-CA administration, but these compounds required a dose of 1.5 mmol/kg. Aniline had little effect on renal function at the doses used in this study. In the in vitro experiments, 2-CA (10(-4) M or greater) depressed basal PAH accumulation. Tetraethylammonium (TEA) uptake was decreased by all compounds with an incubate concentration of the aniline at 10(-3) M. Lactatestimulated PAH uptake was not decreased by any test compound. These results indicate that chlorine substitution on the phenyl ring of aniline enhances nephrotoxic potential, and that 2-substitution produces the greatest increase.

Abstract
The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) developed in a 32-year-old man following fluphenazine enanthate administration. Hypercalcemia was initially present, perhaps reflecting release of calcium from skeletal muscle stores. The elevated serum calcium levels support the existence of a peripheral muscle abnormality in the pathogenesis of the NMS and provides another point of similarity between NMS and malignant hyperthermia.

Abstract
Azaconazole is an experimental agricultural fungicide which has shown promise for use in controlling powdery mildew on crops and bean rust. This study examined the nephrotoxic potential of a single intraperitoneal azaconazole injection (0.4 or 0.6 mmol/kg) or daily azaconazole administration (0.1 or 0.3 mmol/kg/day) for 7 days in male Fischer 344 rats. The in vitro effects of azaconazole on the accumulation of organic ions by renal cortical slices also were examined. Acute azaconazole administration (0.4 or 0.6 mmol/kg, i.p.) produced a marked decrease in urine volume at 6 h. By 48 h urine volume was still decreased in the 0.6-mmol/kg group but not the 0.4-mmol/kg group. Proteinuria (++) and slight hematuria were seen in the 0.6-mmol/kg group on both treatment days. Accumulation of p-aminohippurate (PAH) by renal cortical slices was stimulated in both azaconazole-treated groups while tetraethylammonium (TEA) accumulation was not altered. No changes in blood urea nitrogen concentration, kidney weight or renal morphology were produced at 48 h postinjection by either azaconazole dose. Daily administration of azaconazole (0.1 or 0.3 mmol/kg/day) did not significantly alter any of the renal parameters studied. Incubation of renal cortical slices with increasing concentrations of azaconazole from 10(-5) M to 10(-3) M caused a continued reduction in TEA accumulation. PAH accumulation was decreased significantly following incubation with azaconazole 10(-5) or 10(-3) M. These results indicate that azaconazole is capable of producing acute, reversible renal effects at doses equal to or less than 0.6 mmol/kg and altering organic ion transport both in vivo and in vitro. The lack of marked renal effects following exposure to azaconazole is favorable for the development of this compound as an agricultural fungicide.

Abstract
On admission to the hospital, a splenectomized man was found to have 85% of his erythrocytes parasitized by Babesia microti. His extensive parasitemia allowed for direct study of the morphology and ultrastructure of this organism as it appears in human infection; the need for animal inoculation and rescue techniques was thus eliminated. Positive characteristics (other than the tetrad form) that are diagnostic for babesiosis were identified. By transmission and scanning electron microscopy, parasite-induced changes in the erythrocyte membrane were observed; these alterations may explain the hemolysis seen in babesiosis. Factors that may have allowed the patient to sustain such high-level parasitemia are considered. The experience with this patient confirms that exchange transfusion is a reliable, rapid method for reduction of the parasite load in serious infection with B microti.

Abstract
Postnatal cell proliferation, presumably for the purpose of neuronal replacement, was demonstrated in the vomeronasal epithelium of adult garter snakes using experimental vomeronasal axotomy. The luminal supporting cell layer of the epithelium did not undergo mitosis, nor necrosis, but exhibited some morphological modifications following axotomy. The bipolar layer underwent progressive irreversible degeneration following denervation. Degeneration of neurons progressed initially from alteration of cellular ultrastructure, to gross distortion of neuronal shapes followed by disintegration and disappearance of necrotic neurons. Maximal depletion of neurons occurred two weeks following surgery. The columnar epithelium at that time was characterized by the presence of a cell-depleted zone located between the luminal supporting cell layer and the basal, undifferentiated (Ud) cell layer. This cell-depleted zone occupied 70-80% of each degenerated cell column. Regeneration of axotomized neurons did not occur. The basally located, Ud cells exhibited no changes indicative of necrotic processes, but underwent active cell proliferation following axotomy. Changes in proliferative properties in the Ud cell layer were temporally related to the degeneration of the neuronal cell layer following nerve lesion. The Ud cell proliferation rate was slower than the rate of Bp cell degeneration. Proliferating Ud cells in the denervated epithelium may serve as the source of reconstituted vomeronasal bipolar neurons.

Abstract
Postnatal neurogenesis and reconstitution of the neuronal layer of the vomeronasal epithelium have been demonstrated in adult garter snakes following vomeronasal axotomy. Two weeks following axotomy the vomeronasal epithelium was depleted of its bipolar layer but the basal, undifferentiated cells were actively proliferating. In subsequent weeks the undifferentiated cell layer continued to increase its cell population through mitosis and began to occupy the neuron-depleted zone of the receptor cell column. Four weeks following axotomy the denervated epithelium contained an expanded Ud cell layer which occupied the basal one-half to two-thirds of the receptor cell column. The cells at the base of the expanded Ud cell layer were morphologically similar to Ud cells in a normal epithelium whereas the cells at the apex of the columns resembled normal differentiating neurons. A few necrotic cells could still be detected within the apical, cell-depleted zone. By the eighth post-operative week the receptor cell column was fully occupied with cells formed as a result of Ud cell proliferation. The most apical cells, 6-10 cells deep, were morphologically similar to normal bipolar neurons with a dendritic process reaching the lumen of the VN organ. The remaining cells were morphologically similar to normal differentiating or Ud cells. Sixteen weeks following axotomy a larger portion of cells in the receptor cell column were fully differentiated bipolar neurons. The Ud cell population was reduced and, as in the normal epithelium, occupied only the basal portion of each receptor cell column. The regenerated neurons of the VNO were capable of synthesizing and transporting macromolecules to the telencephalon as demonstrated by autoradiography following intraepithelial injections of [3H]proline. Newly formed axons terminated in the accessory olfactory bulb within 8 weeks following axotomy. These results support the view that the basal Ud cells were the source of neurons in the regenerating vomeronasal organ and demonstrate a dynamic process of neuronal proliferation, differentiation and maturation in the denervated vomeronasal epithelia of adult garter snakes.

Abstract
During growth under far-red (>650 nm) light, Anacystis nidulans accumulates protochlorophyllide to concentrations about one-tenth of the chlorophyll. From whole cell fluorescence spectra, protochlorophyll(ide) was identified also in another blue-green, and in a red, alga grown in far-red light.

Abstract
The light scattering properties of twenty-eight particles, spanning four sizes (near the resonance region) and seven related shapes (a 4:1 cylinder, 4:1 and 2:1 prolate spheroids, a sphere, 2:1 and 4:1 oblate spheroids, and a 4:1 disk), are presented for a common index of refraction, m = 1.61-i0.004, representing silicates. Microwave analog and theoretical methods were used to derive the scattered intensity and degree of polarization as a function of the scattering angle along with the extinction. All results refer to an ensemble or a cloud of identical particles because averages have been taken over random particle orientations. The degree of polarization, backscatter, and the radiation-pressure cross section are most sensitive to particle shape, implying that the use of Mie theory may be inappropriate for many applications.

Abstract
Microwave analog measurements of the forward scattering produced by two spheres yield the extinction as a function of sphere separation for the case of one sphere's being shadowed by the other. The effects of dependent scattering are obvious up to a separation distance of about ten sphere diameters. Side-scattering measurements show a resonance when the axis of the two-sphere system is in the scattering plane and bisects the scattering angle. The magnitude of at least one measured resonance is a factor of 44 larger than the scattering that is due to a single sphere.

Abstract
Spontaneous pigment mutants of Anacystis nidulans were self-selected for improved growth in far red light (> 650 nanometers). Questions were asked about those features of the light-harvesting mechanism which altered to give the mutants improved photosynthetic performance in far red. Answers were sought by comparing pigment and reaction center concentrations for the parent and six mutants grown in gold fluorescent and in far red light. Three significant results emerged. The ratio of reaction centers for photoreactions I and II (RC1/RC2) varied by a value of about 2.1 for all clones grown in gold and a value of about 1.1 for all clones grown in far red. Alteration of the ratio was not evident in any of the mutants.Phycobilisome alterations were evident as decreased phycocyanin content in all mutants. In three mutants, allophycocyanin became the major remaining phycobilisome component. Action spectra for photoreactions I and II allowed estimates of chlorophylls serving each of the two reaction centers. Ratios of chlorophylls to reaction centers within each photosystem were chlorophyll I/RC1 = 118 +/- 11 and chlorophyll II/RC2 = 52 +/- 9 for all seven clones grown in both gold and far red light. Remarkable constancy of these ratios, in spite of wide variation in cell material, supports an hypothesis that in A. nidulans there are two chlorophyll proteins, each bearing a reaction center and chlorophylls in fixed ratio.

Abstract
Emission spectra and transient behavior of fluorescence in Porphyridium cruentum have been studied in search of the pathway of excitation energy from the phycobilisome to Photosystem I (PS I) of photosynthesis. For activating light at 436 nm, absorbed almost entirely by chlorophyll, fluorescence is dominated by the 718 nm band generally attributed to chlorophyll of PS I. Activating light at 550 nm, absorbed mostly by the phycobilisome, gives rise to the distinctive fluorescence band of PS II chlorophyll at 696 nm but also gives a large component at 718 nm. Analysis depends critically upon the source of emission at 718 nm under 550 nm activation: does it arise from PS I or PS IIC0 Ley and Butler (Ley, A.C. and Butler, W.L. (1976) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 73, 3956-3960) have proposed that the 718 nm arises mostly from PS I, to which it is transferred by spillover from PS II. We suggest a different proposition: that under 550 nm activation most of the 718 emission arises from PS II. Analysis shows that this proposition provides an alternative explanation. Using the small change in fluorescence yield observed under 436 nm activation as a monitor of excitation in PS I, we provide evidence that under 550 activation most of the 718 nm fluorescence arises from PS II.

Abstract
Fixed vomeronasal and olfactory epithelia from normal adult garter snakes were microdissected, fractured, and examined with a scanning electron microscope. The method permits a detailed comparative study of the structural organization and morphological characteristics of the constituent cells of the vomeronasal and olfactory epithelia. Despite similarities in the nomenclature of the constituent cells in both epithelia, significant differences exist in their surface morphology. A unique columnar structure composed of non-neuronal elements is present in the vomeronasal epithelium. These columns house the bioplar neurons and undifferentiated cells. Such a columnar organization is absent in the olfactory epithelium. In vomeronasal epithelium the bipolar neurons possess microvillous terminals at their dendritic tips, while the dendritic tips of the bipolar neurons of the olfactory epithelium possess cilia. Vomeronasal supporting cells are covered with microvilli, while olfactory supporting cells are covered with cytoplasmic protuberances in addition to the microvilli. In the vomeronasal epithelium the pear-shaped neurons have a grossly smooth surface and are organized into clusters, while in the olfactory epithelium the elliptical bipolar neurons are spinous, aligned side-by-side and interdigitate. The basal (undifferentiated) cell layer in the vomeronasal epithelium has a high packing density and is composed of several layers of irregularly shaped cells. In the olfactory epithelium the basal cell layer is loosely organized and composed of a single layer of oval cells. This information on the three-dimensional cell structure of both epithelia provides a basis for experimental observations on changes in morphology of the bipolar neurons during genesis, development, maturation, degeneration, and regeneration in postnatal, adult animals.

Abstract
Under far-red (greater than 650 nm) illumination Anacystis nidulans grows poorly and develops a low chlorophyll content. During continued culture over many generations there are increases in growth rate and in the chlorophyll/phycocyanin ratio, usually occurring in concomitant and stepwise fashion. From such selection cultures six clones have been established which differ from the parent in pigment content and show improved growth rate in far-red light. From the evidence at hand the six clones are presumed to be spontaneous mutants selected under the photosynthetically restrictive condition of far-red illumination.

Abstract
A source of efferent fibers to the eye of snakes of the genus Thamnophis has been identified by the use of the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase. Cell bodies of the contralateral nucleus of the ventral supraoptic decussation accumulate horseradish peroxidase after intraocular but not intraorbital injections. Intraocular injections also result in anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase to retinofugal axon terminals. Intraorbital injections result in accumulation of horseradish peroxidase in the cell bodies of the cranial nerve nuclei of extraocular muscles.

Abstract
Some results of experimental studies on microwave scattering by artificially constructed axially symmetric spheres with anisotropic refractive indices are presented. An approximation using Mie theory for spheres with appropriate orientation dependent indices of refraction is shown to provide a good explanation of the observed dependence of the complex forward-scattering amplitudes on target orientation.

Abstract
Eyes of cusk-eels Ophidion welshi and Lepophidium graellsi contain mostly short rods, arranged in five or six regular rows. In O. welshi, cones are single and double, whereas cones are lacking in L. graellsi. The pigment epithelium contains a lipid tapetum lucidum. In L. graellsi the tapetal spheres are 465 nm in diameter; in O. welshi most tapetal spheres have diameters of 187 nm; others, less frequent, are 86 nm. The tapetum of L. graellsi is white, that of O. welshi is blue; they reflect diffusely and reflectance at λmax is about 0.60. Increased tonicity causes the tapetum of O. welshi to turn darker blue and reduced tonicity causes it to become white. The lipid of the tapetum was examined by thin-layer and gas–liquid chromatography; it is a triglyceride containing mostly (88%) docosahexaenoic acid. The visual pigments are rhodopsins; L. graellsi λmax 494, O. welshi λmax 500 nm. Coastal waters where cusk-eels live were fairly turbid: maximal transmission of daylight occurred at 585 nm when the extinction coefficient was 0.6. Reference is made to the secretive and nocturnal habits of cusk-eels, and the functioning of their unusual eyes.

Abstract
Eyes of four species of gars were studied, namely, alligator (Lepisosteus spatula Lacépède), spotted (L. oculatus (Winchell)), shortnose (L. platostomus Rafinesque), and longnqse (L. osseus (L.)). The retina is duplex, a yellow tapetum lucidum is present, rods and retinal pigment move, and the tapetum is uncovered in dim light. The visual pigment is a porphyropsin, λmax 523, and the optical density of the pigment in the retina is 0.22. Transmission through the retina is low at short wavelengths and rises steeply above 460 nm. Reflectance from the tapetum is diminished in the blue, and rises progressively at longer wavelengths to reach a maximum (70%) at about 650 nm. Underwater illumination was measured in waters where gars occur. In lake waters maximal transmissivity occurred at 375 nm and the transmission per meter ranged from 76 to 62%. In rivers and bays, transmission was maximal at long wavelengths, ≥600 nm, and the transmission per meter ranged from 37% to 0.001%; these waters sometimes were stained, and were fairly turbid to very muddy. The yellow tapetum is an efficient reflector of underwater light, the greater part of the energy of which occurs at long wavelengths. It is calculated that the tapetum increases light absorption in the retina by 30%. In muddy rivers inhabited by gars, scotopic vision involving the tapetum probably operates during the daytime at depths of 2 m or less.
