Abstract
Metasurfaces formed of arrays of subwavelength resonators are often tuned to 'critically couple' with incident radiation, so that at resonance dissipative and radiative damping are balanced and absorption is maximized. Such design criteria are typically derived assuming an infinite metasurface, whereas the absorption characteristics of finite metasurfaces, even very large ones, can be markedly different in certain frequency intervals. This is due to the excitation of surface waves, intrinsic to resonant metasurfaces and especially meta-resonances, namely collective resonances where the surface waves form standing-wave patterns over the planar metasurface domain. We illustrate this issue using a detailed model of a Helmholtz-type acoustic metasurface formed of cavity-neck pairs embedded into a rigid substrate, with geometric and dissipation effects included from first principles (R. Brandão and O. Schnitzer, Wave Motion, 97, 102583, 2020). Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to identify and characterize outcome measures for objective and subjective assessment in persons with Rett syndrome (RS). METHODS A systematic review was conducted consulting the EBSCO, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scielo, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases for published studies describing the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and other outcome measures in persons with RS. Validation studies and observational studies were included. The PROMs were first described, and then the measurement properties were evaluated using predefined criteria according to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN). The outcome measures were then grouped according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to establish a relationship between outcome measures and ICF domains. RESULTS Twenty out of 2327 articles were appraised, and seventeen different outcome measures were identified and described. Ten outcome measures corresponded to evaluation questionnaires, while the remaining seven assessed functional outcomes: walking distance, physical activity level and ability to interact visually. A relation between these outcome measures that assess RS and the ICF allows understanding that most of the instruments (fifteen) include the assessment of activity limitations. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study seem to be promising for their use by clinicians and researchers, although they have methodological limitations. The accuracy and quality of these individual outcome measures should continue to be assessed in an attempt to gather a consensus on the best tools used in RS.

Abstract
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) substantially contributes to environmental degradation because of its intrinsic characteristics of fast and high generation volume, low recycling rate, and low revenue margins. A systemic problem is that recycling facilities are not usually a part of a reverse supply chain (RSC) specific for CDW. This makes the recovery process costs prohibitive, especially where companies are unable to receive and process large volumes of waste continuously. This paper presents a systematic analysis of the extant literature and utilizes the results accrued to develop a conceptual RSC model for CDW. In so doing, the research seeks to provide clarity on this phenomenon, while simultaneously stimulating wider academic discourse and further research endeavours. A mixed philosophies epistemological design was adopted using both interpretavism and constructivism to undertake a qualitative systematic analysis of the literature. A process diagram was produced to represent the conceptual model (CM) and thematically group the nodes into three key swim lanes that delineate the boundaries between distribution, manufacturing, and sourcing and warehousing processes. Within each swim lane, stakeholders were incorporated as key actors. A further layer of nuanced complexity was added to illustrate the key actors involved in the process, government strategies, and activity flow paths. This novel CM offers both practical and theoretical contributions to existing knowledge and signposts a future research direction. Such work will demystify reverse logistics for managing CDW, and assist government policy-makers to develop informed policies that reduce the negative environmental impact of construction activities.

Abstract
Acute effects of mercury on mouse blood, kidneys, and liver were evaluated. Mice received a single dose of mercuric chloride (HgCl2, 4.6 mg/kg, subcutaneously) for three consecutive days. We investigated the possible beneficial effects of antioxidant therapy (N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and diphenyl diselenide (PhSe)2) compared with the sodium salt of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS), an effective chelating agent in HgCl2 exposure in mice. We also verified whether metallothionein (MT) induction might be involved in a possible mechanism of protection against HgCl2 poisoning and whether different treatments would modify MT levels and other toxicological parameters. The results demonstrated that HgCl2 exposure significantly inhibited delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) activity in liver and only DMPS treatment prevented the inhibitory effect. Mercuric chloride caused an increase in renal non-protein thiol groups (NPSH) and none of the treatments modified renal NPSH levels. Urea concentration was increased after HgCl2 exposure. NAC plus (PhSe)2 was partially effective in protecting against the effects of mercury. DMPS and (PhSe)2 were effective in restoring the increment in urea concentration caused by mercury. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities and ascorbic acid levels were not modified after mercury exposure. Mercuric chloride poisoning caused an increase in hepatic and renal MT levels and antioxidant treatments did not modify this parameter. Our data indicated a lack of therapeutic effect of the antioxidants tested.

Abstract
Mercury is known to interact with selenite and when the two are co-administered, one reduces the toxicity of the other. The main goal of this study was to investigate the simultaneous in vitro effects of sodium selenite (Se(4+)) and mercuric chloride (Hg(2+)) on the activity of hepatic, renal and cerebral delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) of adult male mice (Swiss albino). Hg(2+) inhibited delta-ALA-D from tissue supernatants and the IC(50) values for hepatic, renal and cerebral enzyme inhibition were 38+/-4.2, 67.5+/-4.3 and 46.2+/-3.7 microM, respectively. Se(4+) displayed a higher inhibitory action toward delta-ALA-D activity than Hg(2+). Simultaneous addition of Se(4+) and Hg(2+) to the delta-ALA-D assay increased the inhibition of the enzyme. Se(4+) and Hg(2+) oxidized total -SH groups from hepatic, renal and cerebral supernatants, although the effect of Se(4+) decreased in the presence of increasing concentrations of Hg(2+). The oxidation of -SH groups from a dithiol (DTT), a monothiol glutathione (GSH) and a protein (albumin) increased in the presence of Hg(2+). Only DTT was oxidized by Se(4+) and the oxidation decreased in the presence of Hg(2+), suggesting the formation of a chemical complex. This complex did not inhibit delta-ALA-D. These results suggest a similar inhibitory mechanism of Se(4+) and Hg(2+) on delta-ALA-D in which oxidation of sulfhydryl groups located at the active site of the enzyme is an essential step. Furthermore, decreasing oxidative effects of selenite on sulfhydryl groups from DTT in the presence of mercury are believed to occur as the result of the formation of an inactive ternary complex of the thiol-Hg-Se type, which does not inhibit delta-ALA-D.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronically administered aluminum on erythropoiesis in rats. After treatment (i.p. injections of Al(2)(SO(4))(3), 50 micromol/kg body weight, five times a week) for 3 months, the treated (Al) group showed significantly decreased hemoglobin concentration (32%) and hematocrit (24%) compared with the control group. Serum iron decreased significantly in the Al group, whereas total iron binding capacity did not change. Treatment did not alter the activity of hepatic, renal or cerebral delta-ALA-D. Biochemical measurements related to 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) levels from serum and hepatic, renal and cerebral homogenates also did not change after treatment. Hepatic concentrations of aluminum were higher in the Al group than in the control group. Renal and cerebral aluminum concentrations did not vary between groups. The present results indicate that exposure to aluminum sulfate promotes signs of anemia in rats as a consequence of alterations in iron status.
