Abstract
Objective: To analyze the influencing factors of blood indicators indexes of interventional radiology workers, and provide a theoretical basis for radiological occupational health monitoring, radiation protection monitoring and risk assessment. Methods: In March 2020, a total of 500 interventional radiology workers (interventional group) and 200 non-interventional radiology workers (control group) who underwent an occupational health examination in Liaoning Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2018 to 2019 were selected as the subjects. The general information, occupation related information, blood routine, fasting blood glucose and thyroid stimulating hormone test results of the subjects were collected. The differences in the levels and abnormal detection rates of blood indexes between the two groups were compared. And the influencing factors of blood indexes of the intervention riodiology workers were analyzed. Results: The lymphocyte count of interventional group[2.10 (1.70, 2.50) ×10(9)/L] was lower than that of control group[2.20 (1.80, 2.60) ×10(9)/L], the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) . The white blood cell count and lymphocyte count of interventional workers in the service age≤13 years were higher than those of service age≥28 years group, and fasting blood glucose was lower than those of service age ≥28 years group (P<0.05) . The detection rate of abnormal fasting blood glucose of interventional radiology workers in the service age ≤13 years group was lower than that of the service age 14-27 years and service age ≥28 years (P<0.05) . The lymphocyte count and platelet count of interventional radiology workers in annual effective dose<0.5 mSv group was higher than that of annual effective dose≥1 mSv group (P<0.05) . The results of multi-factor linear regression analysis showed that service age, annual effective dose and female gender were the influencing factors of lymphocyte count of interventional radiology workers (b=-0.008, -0.110, -0.167, P<0.05) . Conclusion: Long-term low-dose radiation exposure had certain influence on the lymphocyte count of interventional radiology workers. Service age, annual effective dose and gender are the influencing factors of lymphocyte count in interventional radiology workers. It should be reinforced to the radiological protection monitoring and risk assessment on interventional radiology workers.

Abstract
Serine protease inhibitor, a protein superfamily that inhibits the serine protease activity, protects hosts from parasitic infections. This review describes the spatial structure and classification of serine protease inhibitor, mechanisms underlying the interplay between serine protease inhibitor and host immune responses and current advances in serine protease inhibitor of zoonotic cestode family Taeniidae, so as to provide insights into the diagnosis of zoonotic tapeworm infections, discovery of therapeutic targets and screening of vaccine candidates.

Abstract
From December 2017 to December 2018, 3 509 subjects who had regular physical examination in Health Management Center, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital were enrolled in our study, including 399 cancer patients, 1 555 chronic disease patients, and 1 555 healthy control, respectively. The mean age was (55.87±11.98) years, and 31.38% were men. The prevalence of MS among chronic disease group (42.44%) was higher than that of cancer group (34.59%) and healthy control group (18.65%) (P<0.001). Compared with healthy control group, the OR (95%CI) values of MS risk in cancer group and chronic disease group were 2.13 (1.61-2.83) and 2.85 (2.23-3.66), respectively; the OR (95%CI) values of MS risk were 3.56 (2.04-6.21) and 2.77 (1.46-5.25) in breast cancer and thyroid cancer, respectively.

Abstract
Introduction: Axillary lymph nodes (ALN) status is an essential component in tumor staging and treatment planning for patients with breast cancer. The aim of present study was to evaluate the predictive value of preoperative multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) for ALN metastasis in breast cancer patients. Methods: A total of 148 cases underwent preoperative MDCT examination and ALN surgery were eligible for the study. Logistic regression analysis of MDCT variates was used to estimate independent predictive factors for ALN metastasis. The prediction of ALN metastasis was determined with MDCT variates through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Among the 148 cases, 61 (41.2%) cases had ALN metastasis. The cortical thickness in metastatic ALN was significantly thicker than that in non-metastatic ALN (7.5 ± 5.0 mm vs. 2.6 ± 2.8 mm, P < 0.001). Multi-logistic regression analysis indicated that cortical thickness of >3 mm (OR: 12.32, 95% CI: 4.50–33.75, P < 0.001) and non-fatty hilum (OR: 5.38, 95% CI: 1.51–19.19, P = 0.009) were independent predictors for ALN metastasis. The sensitivity, specificity and AUC of MDCT for ALN metastasis prediction based on combined-variated analysis were 85.3%, 87.4%, and 0.893 (95% CI: 0.832–0.938, P < 0.001), respectively. Conclusions: Cortical thickness (>3 mm) and non-fatty hilum of MDCT were independent predictors for ALN metastasis. MDCT is a potent imaging tool for predicting ALN metastasis in breast cancer. Future prospective study on the value of contrast enhanced MDCT in preoperative ALN evaluation is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence has indicated that the long noncoding RNA H19 (lncRNA H19), frequently deregulated in almost all tumor types tested, acted as a pivotal contributor to both cancer initiation and progression. However, the role of lncRNA H19 in human papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains controversial. The aim of the study was to investigate the expression and potential function of lncRNA H19 in human PTC. PATIENTS AND METHODS The lncRNA H19 level was determined by quantitative real-time (RT)-PCR analyses in 58 PTC tissue samples and their paired paracancerous tissue samples. RNA interference, RT-PCR analysis, and Western blot assay were used to determine the impact of lncRNA H19 on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers in human PTC cells. The migratory and invasive capacities of PTC cells were determined by wound-healing and transwell migration and invasion assays. RESULTS lncRNA H19 expression was 2.417-fold higher in PTC tissues than their paired paracancerous tissue (95% CI: 1.898-2.935, P<0.0001). Higher level of lncRNA H19 was correlated to elevated expression of Vimentin, ZEB2, Twist, and Snail2. Inhibition of lncRNA H19 resulted in upregulation of E-cadherin and downregulation of Vimentin both at mRNA and protein levels. Conversely, enforced expression of the exogenous lncRNA H19 led to E-cadherin mRNA and protein downregulation and relative upregulation of Vimentin. Moreover, wound-healing and transwell migration and invasion assays showed that lncRNA H19 could promote the migratory and invasive abilities of PTC cells. CONCLUSION The level of lncRNA H19 was significantly higher in PTC tissues than paired paracancerous tissue or normal tissues. Overexpression of lncRNA H19 was correlated with higher tumor burden of PTC. It also contributes to EMT process, as well as promotes migration and invasion of PTC cells.

Abstract
The inhibitor of DNA‑binding (ID) proteins are dominant‑negative modulators of transcription factors with basic helix‑loop‑helix (bHLH) structures, which control a variety of genes in cell cycle regulation. An increasing volume of evidence has demonstrated that the deregulated expression of IDs in several types of malignancy, including breast carcinoma, has been proven to serve crucial regulatory functions in tumorigenesis and the development of breast cancer (BC). The present study evaluated the prognostic values of the ID family members by investigating a set of publicly accessible databases, including Oncomine, bc‑GenExMiner, Kaplan‑Meier plotter and the Human Protein Atlas. The results demonstrated that mRNA levels of distinct IDs exhibited diverse profiles between BC and normal counterparts. The mRNA expression level of ID2 was significantly higher in breast cancer than normal tissues, while the mRNA expression levels of ID1, ID3 and ID4 were significantly lower in breast cancer tissues than in normal tissues. Furthermore, higher mRNA expression levels of ID1 and ID4 were associated with subgroups with lower pathological grades and fewer lymph node metastases. Survival analysis revealed that elevated mRNA levels of ID1 and ID4 predicted an improved survival in all patients with BC. Increased ID1 mRNA levels were associated with higher relapse‑free survival rates in all patients with BC, particularly in those with ER positive and Luminal A subtype tumors. Increased ID4 mRNA expression predicted longer survival times in all patients with BC, particularly in those with hormone receptor‑positive tumors or those treated with endocrine therapy. These results indicated that IDs are essential prognostic indicators in BC. Future studies on the effect of IDs on the pathogenesis and development of BC are warranted.

Abstract
Forkhead box protein M1(FoxM1) is a member of forkhead superfamily transcription factors. Emerging evidences have progressively contributed to our understanding on a central role of FoxM1 in human cancers. However, perspectives on the function of FoxM1 in breast cancer (BC) remain conflicting, and mostly were from basic research. Here, we explored the expression profile and prognostic values of FoxM1 based on analysis of pooled clinical datasets derived from online accessible databases, including ONCOMINE, Breast Cancer Gene-Expression Miner v4.0, and Kaplan-Meier plotter. It was found that, FoxM1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in breast tumor versus normal control. FoxM1expression profile presented a distinct pattern in different molecular subtypes of BC patients. Higher expression of FoxM1 was correlated to low mRNA expression of estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), erb-B2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (ERBB2), and was inversely associated with the expression of classical luminal regulators forkhead box protein A1 (FoxA1) and GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3). Elevated FoxM1 expression predicted shorter distance metastasis free survival (DMFS) in BC patients, particularly with estrogen receptor (ER) positive and Luminal A, Luminal B subtypes of BC. More interestingly, elevated FoxM1 expression predicted poor survival in breast cancer patients, especially in the ER (+), progesterone receptor (PR) (+) subgroups and BC patients received adjuvant chemotherapy only or treated with tamoxifen only. These results implied that FoxM1 is an essential prognostic factor and promising candidate target in the treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract
CCR10, a member of the chemokine receptor subfamily, is overexpressed in several tumors and play a crucial role in cancer development and progression. However, the functions of CCR10 in breast cancer are unknown. Here, we detected the protein levels of CCR10 in breast cancer cells by western blotting, and examined CCR10 expression in breast cancer tissues via immunohistochemical assay. The results showed that CCR10 expression was elevated in breast cancer MCF7, BT-474 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Further, 63 of 89 cases (70.8%) had positive CCR10 staining, and the CCR10 level was closely related to capsular invasion, lymph node metastasis and tumor stage. Moreover, CCL27, the ligand of CCR10, dose-dependently stimulated the invasion and migration of breast cancer cells, and promoted MMP-7 expression and ERK1/2 activation. CCR10 knockdown in breast cancer cells through siRNA transfection attenuated CCL27-induced cell invasiveness, and suppressed MMP-7 expression and ERK1/2 activation. Additionally, blocking the ERK1/2 pathway inhibited the CCL27/CCR10-promoted cell invasion of breast cancer cells. Together, these data suggest that CCL27/CCR10 interaction induces the ERK1/2 pathway, which then increases MMP-7 expresion and subsequently promotes breast cancer cell invasion and migration. Thus, CCR10 may be a key regulator in breast cancer cell invasion and migration.

Abstract
Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) by catalyzing the conversion of l-arginine to l-citrulline, with the concomitant oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. Recently, various studies have verified the importance of NOS invertebrates and invertebrates. However, the NOS gene family in the oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense is poorly understood. In this study, we cloned the full-length NOS complementary DNA from M. nipponense (MnNOS) and characterized its expression pattern in different tissues and at different developmental stages. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed the MnNOS gene to be expressed in all investigated tissues, with the highest levels observed in the androgenic gland (P < 0.05). Our results revealed that the MnNOS gene may play a key role in M. nipponense male sexual differentiation. Moreover, RT-qPCR revealed that MnNOS mRNA expression was significantly increased in post-larvae 10 days after metamorphosis (P < 0.05). The expression of this gene in various tissues indicates that it may perform versatile biological functions in M. nipponense.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of insulin degludec for diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS Databases including Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Wanfang Data, China Biology Medicine disc (CBM) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched electronically for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) meeting including criteria and the methodological quality of studies was assessed. Then meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.0 software. RESULTS Twelve RCTs with 6 527 patients were included into our study: 4 358 patients in degludec group and 2 169 patients in control group. Compared with insulin glargine, insulin degludec was more effective in reducing fasting blood glucose (MD=-0.40, 95%CI: -0.65--0.16, P=0.001), but less effective in improving levels of glycated hemoglobin (MD=0.13, 95%CI: 0.08-0.17, P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of adverse events in two groups (OR=0.98, 95%CI: 0.87-1.10, P=0.700), but incidence rate of nocturnal hypoglycaemia was significantly lower in insulin degludec group (OR=0.82, 95%CI: 0.72-0.94, P=0.004). CONCLUSIONS Insulin degludec is non-inferior to other basal insulin in reducing levels of blood glucose, but insulin degludec can obviously reduce the incidence rate of nocturnal hypoglycaemia, so it is safer than other basal insulin. The long-term efficacy and safety should be further studied .

Abstract
AIMS To investigate whether serum complement C3 is related to the prevalence and incidence of prediabetes in an adult population. METHODS A cross-sectional (n = 10 206) and prospective cohort study (n = 3333), with a mean (range; 95% CI) follow-up of 2.63 (1-6; 2.58-2.68) years, was conducted in people recruited from the Health Management Centre of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital in Tianjin, China. Measurement of serum C3 concentration, blood fasting glucose, oral glucose tolerance, HbA1c and other potential confounding factors was performed at baseline and each year during the follow-up. Prediabetes was defined according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association. Adjusted logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the relationships between C3 quintiles and prediabetes. RESULTS The prevalence and incidence of prediabetes were 38.5% and 119 per 1000 person-years, respectively. In cross-sectional analysis, after adjustment for potential confounders, the odds ratios of prediabetes for increasing quintiles of C3 were 1.00 (reference), 1.32 (95% CI 1.14-1.53), 1.37 (95% CI 1.18-1.59), 1.75 (95% CI 1.51-2.03), 2.25 (95% CI 1.93-2.62; P for trend < 0.0001). In the cohort analysis, the multiple-adjusted hazard ratio of prediabetes in the highest quintile of baseline C3 was 1.43 (95% CI 1.15, 1.78; P for trend < 0.001), when compared with the lowest quintile. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that elevated serum C3 levels are significantly related to an increased risk of developing prediabetes in an adult population, suggesting that C3 can be used as a biomarker in high-risk individuals to improve primary prevention of prediabetes and diabetes.

Abstract
In double-stranded miRNA/miRNA* duplexes, one of the strands represents an active miRNA, whereas another, known as a passenger strand (miRNA*), is typically degraded. MiR-9* is not detectable in normal myeloid cells. Here we show that miR-9* is expressed in 59% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases and we investigate its clinical impact in 567 adults with de novo AML (age⩽60 years). AML cases with detectable miR-9* included a lower percentage of cases with favorable risk (P<0.001) as compared with those with no detectable miR-9*. High levels of miR-9* expression independently predicted for higher complete remission (odds ratio=1.28, P=0.013) and better event-free survival (EFS) (hazard ratio (HR)=0.86, P=0.001), relapse-free survival (RFS) (HR=0.84, P=0.008) and overall survival (OS) (HR=0.86, P=0.002). Among the subgroup of adverse risk patients, high miR-9* expressers had strikingly longer median survival than low miR-9* expressers (EFS: 16 vs 5 months, P=0.020; RFS: 12 vs 4, P=0.060; OS: 23 vs 8, P=0.021). Comparative transcriptome analysis suggests that miR-9* regulates genes involved in leukemogenesis, for example, MN1 and MLLT3. This is the first report showing that an miRNA* has prognostic value in AML.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that the insulin-like androgenic gland hormone (IAG) gene plays an important role in male sexual differentiation, metabolism, and growth in crustaceans. In the present study, we isolated the full-length genome sequence of IAG by genome walking based on the cDNA sequence in Macrobrachium nipponense. Four novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were studied, including 509G>T, 529G>T, 590A>T in intron 1, and 2226A>G in intron 2. The association of genetic variation with growth traits [body length (BL) and body weight (BW)] was analyzed. Individuals with GG geno- type at locus 2226A>G maintained higher mean BL (P < 0.01) and BW (P < 0.05) than AA and GA individuals. These results suggest that IAG SNPs may be useful molecular markers for selecting growth traits in M. nipponense.

Abstract
Broad-Complex (BR-C) is an early ecdysone-responsive gene encoding a family of zinc-finger transcription factors. In this study, we isolated the full-length cDNA of a BR-C homolog from the testes of the oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense), according to established expressed sequence tag information, using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends technique. The homolog was designated as MnBR-C. The full-length cDNA of MnBR-C contained a 1095-bp open reading frame encoding a precursor protein of 365 amino acid residues. Comparative and bioinformatic analyses revealed that MnBR-C exhibited a high degree of homology with BR-C proteins, and contained the BTB and Zf-H2C2-2 domains. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis revealed that the MnBR-C expression level varied significantly in the developing embryo, postembryonic larva, and adult tissue. Real-time qPCR showed that the MnBR-C gene was expressed in all of the tissues investigated, with the highest level of expression in the brain. In addition, MnBR-C was more abundantly expressed in the testes than in the ovaries.

Abstract
This study utilized high-throughput RNA sequencing technology to identify reproduction- and development-related genes of Macrobrachium nipponense by analyzing gene expression profiles of testis and ovary. More than 20 million 1 x 51-bp reads were obtained by Illumina sequencing, generating more than 7.7 and 11.7 million clean reads in the testis and ovary library, respectively. As a result, 10,018 unitags were supposed to be differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between ovary and testis. Compared to the ovary library, 4563 (45.5%) of these DEGs exhibited at least 6-fold upregulated expression, while 5455 (54.5%) DEGs exhibited at least 2-fold downregulated expression in the testis. The Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis showed that 113 GO terms had potential molecular functions in reproduction. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes results revealed that the most important pathways may be relevant to reproduction and included 7 pathways. Forty-two genes were identified as reproduction-, development-, and sex-related genes based on GO classification and sequence comparison with other publications, including male reproductive-related LIM protein, spermatogenesis-associated protein, gametocyte-specific factor 1, VASA-like protein, vitellogenin, sex-determining protein fem-1, and other potential candidates. These results will advance research in the field of molecular genetics in M. nipponense and offer a valuable resource for further research related to reproduction in crustaceans.

Abstract
In this study, two Sxl gene homologs, designated as Mnsxl1 and Mnsxl2, were cloned and characterized from the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium nipponense by rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The deduced amino acid sequences of Mnsxl1 and Mnsxl2 showed high sequence homology to the insect Sxl and contained conserved domains in two RNA-binding motifs. Real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-QPCR) showed that the Mnsxl1 and Mnsxl2 genes were expressed in all investigated tissues, with the highest level of expression in the intestine and liver. RT-QPCR also revealed that Mnsxl1 and Mnsxl2 mRNAs expressions were both significantly increased at 5 and 20 days post-larvae after metamorphosis. Thus, the results of the present study imply that Mnsxl1 and Mnsxl2 play complex and important roles in the sex differentiation of M. nipponense.

Abstract
Trichinella spiralis infection confers effective resistance to tumor cell expansion. In this study, a T7 phage cDNA display library was constructed to express genes encoded by T. spiralis. Organic phase multi-cell screening was used to sort through candidate proteins in a transfected human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562) and a human hepatoma cell line (H7402) using the display library. The protein encoded by the A200711 gene was identified and analyzed using protein analysis software. To test the antitumor effects of A200711, variations in cell proliferation and apoptosis were monitored after recombinant pEGFP-N1-A200711 was transfected into H7402 cells. The results show that the expressed target gene successfully induced apoptosis in H7402 cells as measured by Hoechst-PI staining, MTT assay (p<0.05). This study warrants further investigation into the therapeutic use of A200711 for anti-hepatocellular carcinomas.

Abstract
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease, characterized by various cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities, many of which may express prognostic value. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small regulatory RNAs. The prognostic value of miRNAs in AML is yet to be determined. Here, we set out to identify miRNAs that are consistent significant prognostic determinants, independent from other known prognostic factors. A discovery cohort (n=167) and validation cohort (n=409) of a heterogeneous AML population were used to reliably identify miRNAs with prognostic value. We report miR-212 as an independent prognostic factor, significantly associated with a prolonged overall survival (OS) and also event-free and relapse-free survival in a discovery cohort (hazard ratio (HR)s=0.77, P=0.015 for OS) that was subsequently confirmed in an independent validation cohort of 409 cases (HR=0.83, P=0.016). The prognostic significance and the prevalence of high miR-212 did not correlate with specific (cyto)genetic subtypes of AML. High miR-212 expression levels are associated with a gene expression profile that is significantly enriched for genes involved in the immune response. MiR-212 may improve the current prognostic risk stratification of mixed AML including normal karyotype AML and AML with cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities.

Abstract
The complete nucleotide sequences of the gene and the mRNA coding for a specific phaseolin type French bean major storage protein have been determined. Comparison of these sequences reveals a phaseolin gene structure consisting of 80 base pairs (bp) of 5' untranslated DNA, 1,263 bp of protein-encoding DNA which is interrupted by five intervening sequences (IVS1, 72 bp; IVS2, 88 bp; IVS3, 124 bp; IVS4, 128 bp; and IVS5, 103 bp), and 135 bp of 3' untranslated DNA. Sequences characteristic of eukaryotic promoters "CCAAT" and "TATA" are present in the 5' flanking DNA, and the eukaryotic poly(A) addition signal A-A-T-A-A-A occurs 16 bp before the first nucleotide of poly(A). The derived amino acid sequence yields an amino acid composition and a molecular weight compatible with those found for the beta-type phaseolin protein. Two regions that probably serve as carbohydrate-peptide linkage recognition sites have been identified. A region of highly hydrophobic amino acids at the NH(2) terminus of the protein suggests the presence of a signal peptide in the newly synthesized phaseolin protein.

Abstract
The fraction of poly(A)-containing RNA isolated from ripening bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cotyledons that sedimented at 16 S in linear logarithmic sucrose gradients was at least as active a messenger as viral RNA when added to a cell-free protein-synthesizing system from wheat germ. The major products synthesized in vitro were polypeptides of about 47,000 and 43,000 daltons, corresponding to two of the three subunits of G1 protein, the most abundant bean seed storage protein. No trace of the largest (53,000 daltons) subunit was found among the polypeptides synthesized in vitro. Proof that the 47,000- and 43,000-dalton polypeptides coded by the 16S RNA were indeed subunits of G1 protein was obtained by immunoprecipitation with monovalent antibody to G1 protein and by electrophoretic mapping of peptides on acrylamide gels after digestion of mixtures of authentic protein and radioactive translation products with protease V8, chymotrypsin, and trypsin. The subunits synthesized in vitro were slightly smaller than the native subunits, probably because they lacked the sugar residues present on the holoprotein.

Abstract
Lab-scale subsurface flow slag-wetlands were constructed to study the removal efficiency and transformation processes of low-concentration inorganic N during the start-up period. As for ammonium-dominated wastewater, the removal rates of total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4(+)-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3(-)-N) and nitrite nitrogen (NO2(-)-N) were 0.12 g x (m2 x d)(-1), 0.07 g x (m2 x d)(-1), 0.10 g x (m2 x d)(-1) and 0.04 g x (m2 x d)(-1), respectively. Nitrifying bacteria was not detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on the slag. NH3 volatilization is the main contribution for N removal resulting from high pH (> 10) and surface soil absorbed most of NH3. For nitrate-dominated wastewater, the removal rates of TN and NO3(-)-N were 0.23 g x (m2 x d)(-1) and 0.48 g x (m2 x d)(-1), and NO2(-)-N accumulated by 0.22 g x (m2 x d)(-1) during the process of denitrification. Removal efficiency of inorganic N for nitrate-dominated wastewater was higher than that for ammonium-dominated wastewater during the start-up period of slag-wetlands, so steel slag can be used as a substrate in constructed wetlands for extensive treatment of nitrate pollution.

Abstract
PURPOSE Telomerase is a specialized polymerase that catalyzes synthesis of telomeres in most eukaryotes. When introduced into somatic cells, it extends the proliferative lifespan and prevents replicative senescence. Whether it has similar functions in lens epithelial cells, especially in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) remains to be determined. In this study, the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) catalytic subunit was introduced into HLECs. A stable cell line expressing hTERT was established and the functions of hTERT were studied. METHODS The telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay was used to analyze the telomerase activity. Western blot analysis was used to examine hTERT expression. Southern blot analysis was used to detect telomere length. HLECs isolated from intact lenses were cultured in DMEM and transfected with hTERT cDNA. The expression of the exogenous hTERT was examined with RT-PCR, Western blot analysis, and TRAP assay. The functions of hTERT were examined with various techniques. RESULTS Among the human, bovine, and rabbit lenses examined, only the central epithelium from the 6-month rabbit lens displayed telomerase activity. In both transparent and cataractous human lenses, hTERT activity and expression were not detected. However, the template RNA was present in both types of human lenses. The telomeres in transparent lenses were approximately 1 kb longer than those in cataractous lenses. The primary cultures and later passages of HLECs also displayed no detectable telomerase activity. Introduction of hTERTcDNA into HLECs followed by G418 selection yielded a stable line of HLECs expressing hTERT. In this line, hTERT has supported normal growth after 48 population doublings (PDs) to date and also enhanced antiapoptotic activity against oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS Telomere lengths may be associated with cataractogenesis. hTERT introduced into HLECs prevents replicative senescence through telomere synthesis. Furthermore, hTERT displays functions beyond telomere synthesis in normal HLECs.

Abstract
The existence of a line solitary-wave solution to the water-wave problem with strong surface-tension effects was predicted on the basis of a model equation in the celebrated 1895 paper by D. J. Korteweg and G. de Vries and rigorously confirmed a century later by C. J. Amick and K. Kirchgässner in 1989. A model equation derived by B. B. Kadomtsev and V. I. Petviashvili in 1970 suggests that the Korteweg-de Vries line solitary wave belongs to a family of periodically modulated solitary waves which have a solitary-wave profile in the direction of motion and are periodic in the transverse direction. This prediction is rigorously confirmed for the full water-wave problem in the present paper. It is shown that the Korteweg-de Vries solitary wave undergoes a dimension-breaking bifurcation that generates a family of periodically modulated solitary waves. The term dimension-breaking phenomenon describes the spontaneous emergence of a spatially inhomogeneous solution of a partial differential equation from a solution which is homogeneous in one or more spatial dimensions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of Gastrodia on motion sickness induced by rotation in mice. METHOD Clockwise and anticlockwise accelerated rotations up to 180 degrees/s for 10 min were used to induce symptoms of motion sickness such as condition taste aversion (CTA), decrease of spontaneous locomotion and impaired ability of space identification in water-maze. RESULT Gastrodia could improve the response of CTA, increase spontaneous locomotion, and enhance the ability of learning and memory in water-maze in mice after the rotation. CONCLUSION Symptoms of motion sickness induced by rotation could be improved by Gastrodia treatment.

Abstract
The peripheral lymphocyte subsets were analyzed in 37 patients with VKH and 32 normal controls by indirect fluorescein assay, using monoclonal antibodies. The percentages of OKT3+, OKT4+, and OKT8+ T-cells in active patients were found to differ insignificantly from those in quiescent patients, as were those in patients of the VK type from those in patients of the Harada type (P > 0.05), whereas the percentage of OKT4+ was significantly higher, that of OKT8+ was lower, and the OKT4/OKT8 ratio was higher in the recurrent patients than in the controls (P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in the ratio of OKT4/OKT8 between the recurrent and the non-recurrent patients (P < 0.01), while the ratio differed insignificantly between the two types of recurrent patients. The results suggested that the recurrence of VKH could be related with imbalance between the T-cell subsets.

Abstract
37 (37%) of 100 patients with anterior uveitis were found HLA-B27 positive (5.3% in the normal controls); 35 (94.6%) of the 37 cases were nongranulomatous and 78.0% were associated with various types of arthritis. T-cell subsets in periphery circulation were evaluated in 47 anterior uveitis patients and 18 controls by means of monoclonal antibodies. Patients with active anterior uveitis had less OKT3+ cells than patients in the inactive phase; there were more OKT4+ and OKT8+ cells in patients in the active phase than in the controls, and particularly the OKT8+ cells were more than in patients of the inactive phase. The mean OKT4+/OKT8+ ratio was not significantly different from that of the controls; however, values of the OKT4+/OKT8+ ratio were abnormal in some patients, and there were more cases with lower ratio values in the active than in the inactive patients.

Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies prepared against subunits II and IV of beef heart cytochrome oxidase were found to cross-react with thermophilic bacterial PS3 oxidase. Each individual antibody affects the enzymatic activity. "Western" blot analyses showed that subunit II antibodies of beef heart recognized subunit II of PS3 and subunit IV antibody likewise recognized a fourth protein subunit on slab gels. This fourth subunit previously thought to be a contaminant or a degradation product has a molecular weight of about 10,500 on SDS-gels, and appears to exist in stoichiometric amount. We have extracted this subunit from slab gels and compared its amino acid composition with that of subunit III.

Abstract
We have constructed a chimeric gene encoding a Brazil nut methionine-rich seed protein which contains 18% methionine. This gene has been transferred to tobacco and expressed in the developing seeds. Tobacco seeds are able to process the methionine-rich protein efficiently from a larger precursor polypeptide of 17 kDa to the 9 kDa and 3 kDa subunits of the mature protein, a procedure which involves three proteolytic cleavage steps in the Brazil nut seed. The accumulation of the methionine-rich protein in the seeds of tobacco results in a significant increase (30%) in the levels of the methionine in the seed proteins of the transgenic plants. Our data indicate that the introduction of a chimeric gene encoding a methionine-rich seed protein into crop plants, particularly legumes whose seeds are deficient in the essential sulfur-containing amino acids, represents a feasible method for improving the nutritional quality of seed proteins.

Abstract
Two monoclonal lines of antibodies were isolated with specificities against the amino half of Subunit IV of beef heart cytochrome oxidase. The lines had nonoverlapping epitopes. Both bound to the matrix face of membranous oxidase, neither bound to the cytoplasmic face. One line (QA4/C4) stimulated electron transfer in soluble or membranous oxidase, while the other (QA4) inhibited that activity by both oxidase preparations. These effects on electron transfer activity were not altered by the inclusion or omission of detergent. ATP depressed the binding of either antibody to either soluble or membranous oxidase. In the absence of ATP, QA4/C4 stimulated electron transfer only in the high affinity phase of cytochrome c oxidation (with decreased KM and increased Vmax), causing slight inhibition in the low affinity phase (with decreased KM). In the presence of ATP, QA4/C4 abolished the high affinity phase, but did not alter the ATP influence on the low affinity phase. In the absence of ATP, antibodies of line QA4 abolished the low affinity phase, leaving a high affinity phase similar to that induced by ATP. In the presence of ATP, QA4 abolished the high affinity phase, leaving a low affinity phase similar to that seen with ATP alone. Abstract
Analysis of total protein, of specific proteins by gel electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis, and of protein synthetic activity in vitro confirmed that intense protein synthesis and accumulation occurred as the French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L). seed grew from 12 to 20 millimeters. These techniques showed that there was no globulin-1 (G1) fraction (requiring high salt for solubility) present in 6-millimeter seeds, and only very small amounts were synthesized in seeds less than 9 millimeters long. The 7- to 9-millimeter stages represent a 2-day transition period over which genetic information for the G1 protein becomes actively expressed, accounting for at least 50% of all protein synthesized in this tissue during the following 14 days. At maturity, the electrophoretic analysis confirmed that G1 globulin was the major storage protein, representing some 50% of the dry seed protein. Cell-free protein synthesis assays, including immunoprecipitation of the in vitro products, clearly showed G1 polypeptides to be among the polysome-directed products.

Abstract
Electrophoretic analysis of the major seed protein, G1 globulin, from four strains of Phaseolus vulgaris L. revealed a three-banded pattern for two strains having a high methionine content (BBL 240 and PI 302,542). The other two strains (PI 207,227 and PI 229,815) known to have a lower seed methionine content, had a two-banded subunit pattern for the G1 globulin. Analytical ultracentrifugation confirmed that globulin from the two-banded strains underwent pH-dependent reversible dissociation similar to that previously found for a three-banded cultivar; additionally, the protomer molecular weight showed that three subunits of about 50,000 molecular weight each were present in the G1 globulin of the two-banded strain. Gel patterns of G1 globulin from the two strains used as parents, BBL 240 and PI 229,815, showed differences in the largest subunit, which appeared as either a 53,000 molecular weight polypeptide known to be present in the three-banded strain, or as a shorter polypeptide having a molecular weight close to 47,000. Analysis of G1 protein from portions of single hybrid seeds showed a banding pattern intermediate between the two- and three-banded types. The subunit pattern from all seeds with intermediate-banded parents segregated in a manner consistent with that expected for control of the polypeptide by a single Mendelian gene. The remaining portions of the seeds were grown to confirm that they represented true crosses. The procedures used are essentially nondestructive, and can be used as a basis for selecting seeds having different protein characters.

Abstract
As seeds of the French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L. cv. Tendergreen) mature, a single protein, G1 globulin (analogous to legumin), represents the majority of protein synthesized. Washed polysomes extracted from developing cotyledons had little endogenous activity in amino acid incorporation, but on addition of cell-free extracts from wheat germ, active incorporation was obtained, the level being similar to that with viral RNA as messenger. The Mg(2+) optimum for protein synthesis in the presence of bean polysomes was 6 mm compared with 4 mm for synthesis of viral polypeptides in the wheat germ system. Using T-2 toxin as an inhibitor, it was shown that 29% of the incorporation depended on initiation events. Electrophoretic analysis of the total polypeptide products of cell-free synthesis gave a disperse profile. Centrifugation to remove polysome-bound peptides after 60 minutes incubation gave a supernatant having a product with the same electrophoretic mobility as G1 globulin and containing 26% of the radioactivity present in the gel. Protein eluted from this peak was subjected to re-electrophoresis and shown to consist of the three polypeptide subunits characteristic of G1 globulin.

Abstract
Coliphage content of sewage collected from 11 different localities in Hong Kong was determined. The number of plaque-forming units (PFU) ranged from 0.036 x 10(3) to 15.9 x 10(3) per ml. In general, urban sewage tended to be richer than rural sewage both in PFU count as well as plaque morphological variation. Seventy-seven isolates were subjected to a host range study. Fifty per cent of these were able to grow on Escherichia coli K-12 as well as E. coli B. Approximately 32% were found to be male specific, and the remaining 18% were K-12 specific although sex-indifferent.
