Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that exosomes play a regulatory role in a variety of biological processes as well as in disease development and progression. However, exosome-mediated intercellular communication between brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) and astrocytes during meningitic Escherichia coli (E. coli)-induced neuroinflammation remains largely unknown. Here, by using in vivo and in vitro models, we demonstrate that exosomes derived from meningitic E. coli-infected BMECs can activate the inflammatory response of astrocytes. A label-free quantitation approach coupled with LC-MS/MS was used to compare the exosome proteomic profiles of human BMECs (hBMECs) in response to meningitic E. coli infection. A total of 57 proteins exhibited significant differences in BMEC-derived exosomes during the infection. Among these proteins, growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) was significantly increased in BMEC-derived exosomes during the infection, which triggered the Erk1/2 signaling pathway and promoted the activation of astrocytes. The identification and characterization of exosome protein profiles in BMECs during meningitic E. coli infection will contribute to the understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms from the perspective of intercellular communication between BMECs and astrocytes, and provide new insights for future prevention and treatment of E. coli meningitis.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is an indispensable element for rice growth. Zn deficiency results in brown blotches and streaks 2-3 weeks after transplanting, as well as stunting, reduced tillering, and low productivity of rice plants. These processes are controlled by different families of expressed genes. A comparative transcriptome profile analysis was conducted using the roots of two Zn deficiency tolerant varieties (UCP122 and KALIBORO26) and two sensitive varieties (IR26 and IR64) by merging data from untreated control (CK) and Zn deficiency treated samples. Results revealed a total of 4,688 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the normal Zn and deficient conditions, with 2,702 and 1,489 unique DEGs upregulated and downregulated, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis identified transcription factors (TFs), such as WRKY, MYB, ERF, and bHLH which are important in the regulation of the Zn deficiency response. Furthermore, chitinases, jasmonic acid, and phenylpropanoid pathways were found to be important in the Zn deficiency response. The metal tolerance protein (MTP) genes also appeared to play an important role in conferring tolerance to Zn deficiency. A heavy metal-associated domain-containing protein 7 was associated with tolerance to Zn deficiency and negatively regulated downstream genes. Collectively, our findings provide valuable expression patterns and candidate genes for the study of molecular mechanisms underlying the response to Zn deficiency and for improvements in breeding for tolerance to Zn deficiency in rice.

Abstract
The blood-brain barrier is a specialized structure in mammals, separating the brain from the bloodstream and maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system. The barrier is composed of various types of cells, and the communication between these cells is critical to blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Here, we demonstrate the astrocyte-derived TGFβ1-mediated intercellular communication between astrocytes and brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs). By using an in vitro co-culture model, we observed that the astrocyte-derived TGFβ1 enhanced the tight junction protein ZO-1 expression in BMECs and the endothelial barrier function via a non-canonical hedgehog signaling. Gli2, the core transcriptional factor of the hedgehog pathway, was demonstrated to modulate ZO-1 expression directly. By the dual-luciferase reporter system and chromatin immunoprecipitation, we further identified the exact sites on Smad2/3 that bound to the gli2 promotor and on Gli2 that bound to the zo-1 promotor. Our work highlighted the TGFβ1-mediated intercellular communication of astrocytes with BMECs in BBB, which shall extend current knowledge on the BBB homeostasis physiologically, and more importantly suggests TGFβ1 as a potential effector for future prevention and amelioration of BBB dysfunction.

Abstract
Aim: To investigate the mRNAs and noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) expression in astrocytes upon meningitic-Escherichia coli infection. Materials & methods: The transcription of mRNAs and ncRNAs were fully investigated and profiled by whole transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatic approaches. Whole transcriptome differences between the infected astrocytes and brain microvascular endothelial cells were further compared and characterized. Results: A total of 2045 mRNAs, 74 long noncoding RNAs, 27 miRNAs and 418 circular RNAs were differentially transcribed in astrocytes upon infection. Competing endogenous RNAs regulatory networks were constructed and preliminary validated. Transcriptomic differences between astrocyte and brain microvascular endothelial cells revealed the cell-specific responses against the infection. Conclusion: Our study comprehensively characterized the ncRNAs and mRNAs profiles in astrocytes upon meningitic-E. coli infection, which will facilitate future functional studies.

Abstract
Over the 14 years since economic reform began, and the restructuring of the economy to encourage international trade, a large number of township enterprises have been developed and put into operation in the Peoples Republic of China. From 1978 to 1991, the number of enterprises has increased 11.5 times; the number of employees has increased 2.4 times; the fixed assets have increased 13.7 times; and the value of the total output has increased 22.5 times. In this article, a report is given on a sample survey in 30 counties in 1990, which showed that 82.69% of rural industrial enterprises had at least one type of occupational hazard in their work environments. Workers engaged in at least one type of hazardous working environment accounted for 33.91% of the blue-collar workers. Physical examinations were performed for seven types of occupational diseases: silicosis, coal worker's pneumoconiosis, asbestosis, chronic lead poisoning, benzene analogs poisoning, chronic chromium poisoning, and noise-induced hearing loss. The total detectable rate of the seven types of occupational diseases was 4.4% among those workers. In addition, 11% had illnesses suspected of being (though not proven to be) caused by occupational exposures. Most township enterprises do not provide basic occupational health services. The coverage of five routine occupational health service activities provided for township enterprises were very limited, from 1.4 to 36%.
