Abstract
Mucus is a complex polymeric hydrogel that serves as a critical defense in several organs. In the lungs, it provides a formidable barrier against inhaled particles such as microorganisms. In addition, mucus is essential for normal lung physiology, as it promotes immune tolerance and facilitates a normal commensal pulmonary microbiome. Hypersecretion of airway mucus is a characteristic of numerous respiratory diseases, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and creates pulmonary obstruction, limiting the effectiveness of inhaled therapies. Due to those alterations, therapeutic strategies must be optimal to limit airway obstruction and restore pulmonary function. Mucoactive drugs are common therapeutic options and are classified into different groups depending on their modes of action, i.e., expectorants, mucokinetics, mucoregulators and mucolytics. This review focuses on mucoactive drugs and their modes of action. A special focus will be made on two challenging pulmonary pathologies: COPD and CF, and on their clinical studies conducted with mucoactive drugs.

Abstract
For cystic fibrosis gene therapy, the aerosolization of genetic materials is the most relevant delivery strategy to reach the airway epithelium. However, aerosolized formulations have to resist shear forces while maintaining the integrity of plasmid DNA (pDNA) during its journey from the nebulization to the epithelial cells. Herein, we compared the efficiency of gene delivery by aerosolization of two types of formulations: (i) BSV163, a branched cationic amphiphilic compound, co-formulated with different DOPE ratios (mol/mol) and DMPE-PEG5000 and (ii) 25 KDa branched polyethylenimine (b-PEI)-based formulation used as control. This study also aims to determine whether BSV163-based formulations possess the ability to resist the nebulization mechanisms and protect the nucleic acids (pDNA) cargo. Therefore, two CpG free plasmids (pGM144 or pGM169) encoding either the luciferase reporter gene or hCFTR respectively were used. Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) cell-culture was selected as an in-vitro model for aerosol experiments due to its closer analogy with in vivo morphology. Results highlighted that DOPE ratio influences the capacity of the BSV163 based-formulations to mediate high transfection efficacies. Furthermore, we proved that addition of DMPE-PEG5000 upon the formation of the BSV163/DOPE (1/1) lipid film instead of post-insertion led to a higher transgene expression. The aerosolization of this formulation on ALI cell-culture was more efficient than the use of b-PEI-based formulation.

Abstract
The mucus obstructing the airways of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients is a yield stress fluid. Linear and non-linear rheological analyses of CF sputa can provide relevant biophysical markers, which could be used for the management of this disease. Sputa were collected from CF patients either without any induction or following an aerosol treatment with the recombinant human DNAse (rhDNAse, Pulmozyme®). Several sample preparations were considered and multiple measurements were performed in order to assess both the repeatability and the robustness of the rheological measurements. The linear and non-linear rheological properties of all CF sputa were characterized. While no correlation between oscillatory shear linear viscoelastic properties and clinical data was observed, the steady shear flow data showed that the apparent yield stress of sputum from CF patients previously treated with rhDNAse was approximately one decade lower than that of non-treated CF patients. Similar results were obtained with sputa from non-induced CF patients subjected ex vivo to a Pulmozyme® aerosol treatment. The results demonstrate that the apparent yield stress of patient sputa is a relevant predictive/prognostic biomarker in CF patients and could help in the development of new mucolytic agents.

Abstract
Severe malaria accounts for approximately 10% of all cases of imported malaria in France; cases are mainly due to Plasmodium falciparum, while other Plasmodium species are possible but uncommon (P. vivax, P. knowlesi, P. malariae, and P. ovale). On the basis of WHO criteria for endemic areas, the French criteria defining severe imported malaria in adults have been progressively adapted to the European healthcare level. Management of severe imported malaria is a diagnostic and treatment emergency and must be initially conducted in the intensive care unit. Anti-infective treatment is now based on intravenous artesunate, which must be available in every hospital of the country likely to receive severe imported malaria patients. Intravenous quinine is thus used as a second-line treatment and is restricted to limited indications. Critical care management of organ failure is essential, particularly in patients presenting with very severe malaria. To date, no adjunctive therapy (including exchange transfusion) has demonstrated clear beneficial effects.

Abstract
En France, le paludisme grave d’importation concerne environ 12 à 14 % des accès palustres et implique très majoritairement Plasmodium falciparum. À partir de la définition du paludisme grave de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé utilisée en zone d’endémie palustre, la définition française du paludisme grave d’importation de l’adulte a été adaptée aux données et au contexte européens. La prise en charge du paludisme grave est une urgence diagnostique et thérapeutique qui doit être réalisée initialement en réanimation. Le traitement curatif du paludisme grave d’importation repose maintenant sur l’artésunate intraveineux (IV) qui doit être disponible dans chaque hôpital susceptible de recevoir ces patients. Dès lors, la quinine IV devient un traitement de seconde ligne réservé à quelques circonstances. La prise en charge symptomatique des défaillances d’organes est primordiale, notamment au cours des formes les plus sévères. Enfin, aucun traitement adjuvant n’a prouvé, à ce jour, son efficacité en pratique clinique.

Abstract
Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the most common chronic genetic disorder among the Caucasian population, is a life-threatening disease mainly due to respiratory failures resulting from chronic infections and inflammation. Although research in the pharmacological field has recently made significant progress, gene therapy still remains a promising strategy to cure CF, especially because it should be applicable to any patient whatever the mutation profile. Until now, little attention has been paid to bacterial lung infections with regard to gene delivery to the airways; yet, this could greatly impact on the success of gene therapy. Previously, we have reported arsonium-containing lipophosphoramides as poly-functional nanocarriers capable of simultaneous antibacterial action against Gram-positive bacteria and gene transfer into eukaryotic cells. In the present work, we show that such nanoparticles can also be combined with an N-heterocyclic carbene-silver complex in order to extend the spectrum of antibacterial activity, including towards the Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Importantly, this is demonstrated not only using standard in vitro protocols but also a clinically-relevant aerosol delivery method. Furthermore, antibacterial effects are compatible with efficient and safe gene delivery into human bronchial epithelial cells. The poly-functionality of combinations of such chemical compounds may thus show benefits for CF lung gene therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE The first reports of hepatic steatosis following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) were published several years ago; however, clear risk factors remain to be identified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for hepatic steatosis post-PD. METHODS We studied 90 patients who had undergone PD between September 2005 and January 2015. The inclusion criteria were as follows: available unenhanced CT within one month before PD and at least one unenhanced CT acquisition between PD and chemotherapy initiation. Using scanners, we studied the liver and spleen density as well as the surface areas of visceral (VF) and subcutaneous fat (SCF). These variables were previously identified by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Hepatic steatosis occurred in 25.6% of patients at 45.2 days, on average, post-PD. Among the patients with hepatic steatosis, the average liver density was 52 HU before PD and 15.1 HU post-PD (p < 0.001). The Patients with hepatic steatosis lost more VF (mean, 28 vs. 11 cm2) and SCF (28.8 vs. 13.7 cm2) (p < 0.01 and p = 0.01, respectively). Portal vein resection and extensive lymph node dissection were independent risk factors in the multivariate analysis (odds ratio [OR] 5.29, p = 0.009; OR 3.38, p = 0.04, respectively). CONCLUSION Portal vein resection and extensive lymph node dissection are independent risk factors for post-PD hepatic steatosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reliable tools for patient selection are critical for clinical drug trials. AIM To evaluate a consensus-based, standardised magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) protocol for selecting patients for inclusion in Crohn's disease (CD) multicenter clinical trials. METHODS This study recruited 20 patients [Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) scores: <150 (n = 8); 150-220 (n = 4); 220-450 (n = 8)], to undergo ileocolonoscopy and two MREs (with and without colonic contrast) within a 14-day period. Procedures were scored centrally using, Magnetic Resonance Index of Activity (MaRIA), and both Crohn's Disease Endoscopic Index of Severity (CDEIS) and Simplified Endoscopic Score (SES-CD). RESULTS 37 MREs were acquired. Both MREs were evaluable in 16 patients for calculation of test-retest and inter-reader reliability scores. The MaRIA scores for the terminal ileum had excellent test-retest and inter-reader reliability, with correlations >0.9. The proximal ileum showed strong within-reader agreement (0.90-0.96), and fair between-reader agreement (0.59-0.72). MRE procedures were tolerable. MaRIA scores correlated with CDEIS and SES-CD (0.63 and 0.71), but not with CDAI (0.34). MRE identified 3 patients with intra-abdominal complications, who would otherwise have been included in clinical trials. Furthermore, both MRE and ileocolonoscopy identified active bowel wall inflammation in 2 patients with CDAI <150, and none in 1 patient with CDAI > 220. Data quality was good/excellent in 85% of scans, and fair or better in 96%. CONCLUSIONS Magnetic resonance enterography of high-quality and reproducibility was feasible in a global multi- centre setting, with evidence for improved selectivity over CDAI and ileocolonoscopy in identifying appropriate CD patients for inclusion in therapeutic intervention trials.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) imaging features of HCC that develops in patients who are free from underlying liver cirrhosis and to determine if the MDCT presentation of this specific tumor differs from that of the more common HCC that develops in patients with liver cirrhosis using a retrospective case-control study. PATIENTS AND METHODS The MDCT examinations of 38 patients with HCC in non-cirrhotic liver (group 1) were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed and compared to those obtained in 38 patients with HCC in cirrhotic liver (group 2) matched for age and gender. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of HCC of both groups were compared using univariate analysis. RESULTS HCCs were significantly larger in group 1 (81.5mm±55.5) than in group 2 (44.5mm±39.1 SD; P=0.0015). In group 1, HCCs were more frequently single tumors (87%) than in group 2 (37%) (P<0.0001), encapsulated (92% vs. 47% respectively; P<0.0001), had more frequently fatty component (24% vs. 8%, respectively; P=0.0279) and internal hemorrhage (29% vs. 3%, respectively; P=0.0033). No significant differences were found between the two groups for location, hyperenhancement of HCC during the arterial phase, washout during the portal phase, endoluminal portal involvement by HCC, endoportal cruoric thrombus, invasion of adjacent organs and underlying liver steatosis. CONCLUSION HCC in non-cirrhotic liver are larger than those observed in cirrhotic liver and more frequently present as a single encapsulated tumor. They have the same patterns of enhancement than HCC that develops in cirrhotic liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) colonography or enterography is increasingly used to assess disease activity and complications in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, no study has evaluated the role of this imaging technique to assess sacroiliitis. AIM The primary objective was to assess the prevalence of inflammatory sacroiliitis on MRI performed for IBD investigation. The secondary aim was to elucidate clinico-biological factors associated with the presence of sacroiliitis. METHODS This study was performed on 186 patients suffering from IBD followed in a gastroenterology department between 2004 and 2011: 131 with Crohn's disease and 55 with ulcerative colitis. Clinico-biological and endoscopic data were collected and MR enterography or colonography was performed to assess IBD activity on axial and coronal fat suppressed injected T1-weighted sequences. On MRI, sacroiliitis was scored blindly by two independent readers according to ASAS (Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society) criteria. RESULTS The prevalence of inflammatory sacroiliitis was 16.7% (n = 31). Sacroiliitis was bilateral in 14 cases and unilateral in 17 cases. The sacroiliac joints were considered normal in 144 cases and doubtful in 11 cases. Older age and female gender were significantly associated with the presence of sacroiliitis. Other factors such as type of IBD, disease duration and localisation of IBD, surgery history, biological inflammation, bowel disease activity and treatment were not associated with sacroiliitis. CONCLUSION Inflammatory sacroiliitis was evidenced by MRI in 16.7% in patients suffering from IBD. Added to clinico-biological data, MRI analysis should contribute to an earlier diagnosis of axial spondylarthritis in patients with IBD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We wanted to assess the diagnostic accuracy of urinary dipstick testing in excluding catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with fever or hypothermia. METHODS This was a prospective observational cohort study in a medical-surgical ICU. Patients with new-onset fever >38.3 °C or hypothermia <36 °C at least 48 h after urinary catheter insertion were included over a 2-year period. At each episode, a urinary dipstick test and a urine culture were performed as the criterion standard. Extensive microbiological investigations for extra-urinary infections were performed also. The performances of various urinary dipstick result combinations in ruling out CAUTI were compared based on the likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-). RESULTS Symptomatic CAUTI was diagnosed in 31 (24.4 %) of the 127 included patients (195 episodes of fever or hypothermia). LR+ was best for combined leukocyte esterase-positive and nitrite-positive dipstick results (overall population: 14.91; 95 % confidence interval [95 % CI], 5.53-40.19; patients without urinary symptoms: 15.63; 95 % CI, 5.76-42.39). LR- was best for either leukocyte esterase-positive or nitrite-positive dipstick results (overall population: 0.41; 95 % CI, 0.57-0.65; patients without urinary symptoms, 0.36; 95 % CI, 0.21-0.60). CONCLUSIONS Urinary dipstick testing at the bedside does not help to rule out symptomatic CAUTI in medical or surgical ICU patients with fever or hypothermia.

Abstract
We reported a case of group A streptococcal meningitis in a patient with a CSF fluid leak. This case underlined several relevant points: (i) an unfrequent cause of bacterial meningitis; (ii) the main diagnosis to evoke when the direct examination of CSF shows Gram+ cocci with a negative pneumococcal antigen; (iii) that bacteria other than Streptococcus pneumoniae are possible in front of a meningitis associated with a CSF fluif leak.

Abstract
The metabolically competent hepatocyte-like human HepaRG cells represent a suitable alternative in vitro cell model to human primary hepatocytes. Here, we describe the culture procedure required to expand progenitor HepaRG cells and to differentiate them into hepatocyte-like cells. Transient transfection of gene and siRNA into cultured cells, using nonviral strategies, is an invaluable technique to decipher gene functions. In this chapter, we detail transfection protocols for efficient transfer of plasmid DNA or siRNAs into proliferating progenitor or quiescent differentiated HepaRG cells as well as into primary hepatocytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND INFORMATION In Xenopus, during oocyte maturation and the segmentation period, cell cycle progression is independent of new transcription, but requires de novo translation. This suggests that the completion of oocyte maturation and then the rapid cell division period is controlled exclusively at a post-transcriptional level by specific gene products. To isolate these maternal genes, a differential screening of a Xenopus egg cDNA library was performed. Several cDNAs were isolated which correspond to mRNA polyadenylated in eggs and deadenylated in embryos, and these constitute the founders members of the Eg family of mRNAs. RESULTS We report here the characterization of Eg6 mRNA as a novel maternal gene expressed in Xenopus egg until gastrula stage. The Eg6 transcript is initially concentrated in the vegetal cytoplasm of the egg, and later the distribution of the transcript marks the posterior vegetal end of developing embryos. pEg6 is a multidomain protein with a kinase non-catalytic C-lobe domain of unknown function, a cluster of four WH2 (Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein homology 2) domains and a modified FYVE zinc-finger motif. The amino acid sequence of pEg6 is related to PEM-5 (posterior end mark-5), from an ascidian maternal mRNA, and spire, a Drosophila protein required to establish dorsal-ventral and anterior-posterior axes of polarity and recently described as an actin nucleation factor. In Xenopus and Schizosaccharomyces pombe cells pEg6 expression induces filamentous actin clusters and is associated with vesicular structure. CONCLUSION These data suggest that pEg6 acts as a vegetally localized factor contributing to the actin nucleation process during Xenopus early development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum procalcitonin level may reflect non-infectious inflammation. AIM To assess the correlation of serum procalcitonin level with clinical, biological, endoscopic and radiological markers of disease activity in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and to evaluate the additional diagnostic benefit of measuring serum procalcitonin level to that of C-reactive protein (CRP) for disease activity appraisal. METHODS We performed a prospective observational study. Spearman's rank correlation and receiver operating characteristic analysis were used to evaluate correlation and diagnostic accuracy respectively. RESULTS In Crohn's disease (CD) (n = 30), serum procalcitonin level was strongly correlated with clinical, biological, endoscopic and radiological disease activity markers. In CD, the serum procalcitonin level >0.14 μg/L demonstrated a high accuracy for detecting severe disease (Sensitivity = 100%; Specificity = 96%; AUROC = 0.963; P = 0.0001). The diagnostic accuracy of the 'serum procalcitonin level-CRP strategy' (CRP >5 mg/L and serum procalcitonin level >0.05 μg/L) was significantly superior to that of CRP alone for diagnosing severe CD (AUROC = 0.783 vs. 0.674; P = 0.01). In ulcerative colitis (UC) (n = 27), serum procalcitonin level was correlated with CRP and with endoscopic and radiological disease activity markers. CONCLUSIONS In CD, the serum procalcitonin level was correlated with all disease activity markers and a cut-off of 0.14 μg/L could distinguish severe forms of the disease. The 'serum procalcitonin level-CRP strategy' was superior to CRP alone for diagnosing active or severe CD.

Abstract
Invasive intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas may be associated with pancreaticogastric fistulas as shown by case reports. We report the case of a benign IPMN associated with pancreaticogastric and pancreaticoduodenal fistulas. A 70-year-old woman was admitted with intestinal obstruction. Computed tomography and MRI showed a large dilatation of the main pancreatic duct (>1 cm) with intraductal nodules, and pancreaticogastric and pancreaticoduodenal fistulas. Several features in imaging were present to support a malignant IPMN, so that the patient underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy. The histopathological examination of the surgical specimen showed a benign IPMN. This case proves that a benign IPMN can cause pancreaticogastric and pancreaticoduodenal fistulas, probably resulting from mechanical factors.

Abstract
For a long time, imaging of the biliary tract after surgical procedures was performed with invasive procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography. Due to recent advances in diagnostic imaging, non-invasive techniques are now favored. While US remains the initial imaging modality, it is frequently followed by CT and/or MRCP. Image interpretation should always be performed in keeping with clinical and laboratory findings as well as the type of surgical procedure. The most appropriate imaging modality is selected based on these data. In patients with jaundice or biliary tract stenosis, MRCP, with use of an optimal technique and 3D acquisition, is the imaging modality of choice. In non-jaundiced patients with non-distended biliary tract and suspected bile leak, MRCP should be completed by the injection of a liver-specific contrast agent with biliary excretion to achieve non-invasive biliary tract opacification. In patients with malignancy, CT is preferred due to its high spatial resolution and ability to demonstrate small anastomotic tumor recurrences. CT should also be performed in patients with suspected hepatic artery or portal vein injury in addition to biliary tract injury or to detect distant complications.

Abstract
In mammals, the complex interaction of neural, hormonal, and behavioral outputs from the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) drives circadian expression of events, either directly or through coordination of the timing of peripheral oscillators. Melatonin, one of the endocrine output signals of the clock, provides the organism with circadian information and can be considered as an endogenous synchronizer, able to stabilize and reinforce circadian rhythms and to maintain their mutual phase-relationship at the different levels of the circadian network. Moreover, exogenous melatonin, through an action on the circadian clock, affects all levels of the circadian network. The molecular mechanisms underlying this chronobiotic effect have also been investigated in rats. REV-ERB alpha seems to be the initial molecular target.

Abstract
Polystomatid flatworms are parasites of high host specificity, which mainly infect amphibian hosts. Only one polystome species has so far been recorded from Madagascar despite the high species richness and endemicity of amphibians on this island. Out of the 86 screened Malagasy frog species, we recovered polystomes from 25 in the families Ptychadenidae and Mantellidae. Molecular phylogenetic analysis uncovered an unexpected diversity of polystome species belonging to two separate clades: one forming a lineage within the genus Metapolystoma, with one species in Ptychadena and several species in the mantellid host genera Aglyptodactylus and Boophis; and the second corresponding to an undescribed genus that was found in the species of the subfamily Mantellinae in the family Mantellidae. The phylogenetic position of the undescribed genus along with molecular dating suggests that it may have colonized Madagascar in the Late Mesozoic or Early Cainozoic. By contrast, the more recent origin of Metapolystoma in Madagascar at ca 14-2 Myr ago strongly suggests that the ancestors of Ptychadena mascareniensis colonized Madagascar naturally by overseas dispersal, carrying their Metapolystoma parasites. Our findings provide a striking example of how parasite data can supply novel insights into the biogeographic history of their hosts.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare two methods of post processing cardiac CT data to measure global ventricular function. Materials and methods. Retrospective study where three readers measured the end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV) and ejection fraction (EF) of the right (n=22) and left (n=44) ventricles, using a 2D method (extrapolated volumetric method, EVM) and a 3D method (direct volumetric method, DVM) after cardiac CT with retrospective ECG gating. Inter- and intraobserver agreement were calculated based on the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with 95% confidence interval (CI95%), and results obtained with each method were compared using the student t test for paired samples. RESULTS Inter- and intraobserver reproducibility were very good for both methods, with ICC ranging between 0.694 and 0.992, without significant difference. For the left ventricle, EDV, ESV and EF were 16653 ml, 8351 ml and 5415% for DVM et de 20361 ml, 11558 ml and 4613% for EVM respectively. Right ventricular values were 15247 ml, 7534 ml, 5013% and 17253 ml, 9940 ml, 439% (p<0,0001). CONCLUSION The very good inter- and intraobserver reproducibility for both methods validate their use in clinical practice. Volume measurements with DVM are always inferior to volumes with EDM, with inverse relationship for EF measurements.

Abstract
Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) is an important root crop for sucrose production. A study was conducted to find a new abundant source of microsatellite (SSR) markers in order to develop marker assistance for breeding. Different sources of existing microsatellites were used and new ones were developed to compare their efficiency to reveal diversity in mapping population and mapping coverage. Forty-one microsatellite markers were isolated from a B. vulgaris ssp maritima genomic library and 201 SSRs were extracted from a B. vulgaris ssp vulgaris library. Data mining was applied on GenBank B. vulgaris expressed sequence tags (ESTs), 803 EST-SSRs were identified over 19,709 ESTs. Characteristics, polymorphism and cross-species transferability of these microsatellites were compared. Based on these markers, a high density genetic map was constructed using 92 F(2) individuals from a cross between a sugar and a table beet. The map contains 284 markers, spans over 555 cM and covers the nine chromosomes of the species with an average markers density of one marker every 2.2 cM. A set of markers for assignation to the nine chromosomes of sugar beet is provided.

Abstract
Knowledge of the histological features of different components of a liver lesion greatly assists radiologists because it provides understanding of the correspondingimaging features. The imaging characteristics of lesions depend on variations of the extracellular architecture, mainly surrounding stromal tissue. Until histological imaging techniques become available, cellular analysis relies on optical microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Recent advances in imaging techniques now provide additional information on lesions due to improved spatial, temporal and contrast resolution. Correct interpretation of these imaging features should improve diagnosis.

Abstract
The objective of the CT-enteroclysis is to distend the entire small intestine equally and sufficiently using a nasojejunal probe and an enteroclysis catheter for administration of a neutral opacifying agent. Today this is the best radiological method available to explore the small intestine because of its good spatial resolution and the rapidity of the exam. It is a high-performance exam when searching for transmural and extramural pathologies, in particular small tumoral lesions. It remains less effective in the exploration of anomalies of the lumen's mucosal lining, contrary to videocapsule endoscopy and the double-balloon enteroscope. It has been recognized that the CT-enteroclysis is a high-performance examination that should replace the small-bowel follow-through exam. However, there are undeniable disadvantages: higher does of radiation, patient discomfort during placement of the enteroclysis catheter, false-positive results, long interpretation time, and the impossibility of exploring the endoluminal aspect of the intestinal mucosal lining. All radiologists should therefore become familiar with the problems involved with this exam and its signs and patterns, which are illustrated in this pictorial review.

Abstract
Mangafodipir trisodium (Teslascan) is a hepatobiliary contrast agent that provides noninvasive opacification of the bile ducts. Using this contrast medium combined with a T1-weighted gradient echo enhanced sequence provides functional imaging of the bile ducts. Second-intention MRI was obtained after the usual morphological study of the bile ducts using heavily T2-weighted sequences (SS-FSE Te eff long and SS FSE Te eff short). This method can detect many biliary duct anomalies: biliary leakage in the postoperative context, mapping of bile ducts and the gallbladder in the search for anatomical variants, analysis of biliodigestive or biliobiliary anastomoses, or a dynamic study of bile secretion and excretion. Opacification of the bile ducts has only been possible until now with invasive tests aggravated by a certain co-morbidity rate and their functional study using biliary scintigraphy limited by mediocre spatial resolution. This new possibility provides access not only to morphological imaging, but also to functional imaging with excellent spatial resolution.
