Evaluation of meningococcal vaccination policies among colleges and universities - United States, 2017

ObjectiveQuadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccines (MenACWY) have been recommended routinely for adolescents since 2005; in 2015, serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccines were recommended for persons aged 16-23 years based on individual clinical decision making. We surveyed college health providers or administrators to understand current meningococcal vaccine policies. Methods/Participants: In January 2017, we distributed a survey to 985 institutions in partnership with the American College Health Association to assess vaccination policies and outbreak response plans. Results: Overall, 352 (36%) institutions completed the survey. Most either required (N = 186, 53%) or recommended (N = 148, 42%) a meningococcal vaccine; only half (N = 167) had a policy specifically addressing MenB vaccines. Few institutions with a MenB vaccine policy required vaccination (N = 7, 4%); most recommended vaccination (N = 160, 96%). Conclusion: Most institutions have a meningococcal vaccination policy; however, there is substantial diversity in policies. Fewer schools have policies specifically addressing MenB vaccines.

Varicella immunization requirements for US colleges: 2014-2015 academic year

OBJECTIVE

To obtain information on varicella prematriculation requirements in US colleges for undergraduate students during the 2014-2015 academic year.

PARTICIPANTS

Health care professionals and member schools of the American College Health Association (ACHA).

METHODS

An electronic survey was sent to ACHA members regarding school characteristics and whether schools had policies in place requiring that students show proof of 2 doses of varicella vaccination for school attendance.

RESULTS

Only 27% (101/370) of schools had a varicella prematriculation requirement for undergraduate students. Only 68% of schools always enforced this requirement. Private schools, 4-year schools, northeastern schools, those with <5,000 students, and schools located in a state with a 2-dose varicella vaccine mandate were significantly more likely to have a varicella prematriculation requirement.

CONCLUSIONS

A small proportion of US colleges have a varicella prematriculation requirement for varicella immunity. College vaccination requirements are an important tool for controlling varicella in these settings.

US college and university student health screening requirements for tuberculosis and vaccine-preventable diseases, 2012

OBJECTIVE

Colleges are at risk for communicable disease outbreaks because of the high degree of person-to-person interactions and relatively crowded dormitory settings. This report describes the US college student health screening requirements among US resident and international students for tuberculosis (TB) and vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) as they relate to the American College Health Association (ACHA) guidelines. Methods/Participants: In April 2012, US college health administrators (N = 2,858) were sent online surveys to assess their respective school's TB screening and immunization requirements.

RESULTS

Surveys were completed by 308 (11%) schools. Most schools were aware of the ACHA immunization (78%) and TB screening (76%) guidelines. Schools reported having policies related to immunization screening (80.4%), immunization compliance (93%), TB screening (55%), and TB compliance (87%).

CONCLUSION

Most colleges were following ACHA guidelines. However, there are opportunities for improvement to fully utilize the recommendations and prevent outbreaks of communicable diseases among students in colleges.

Use of perceptually based apparatus to train adult women's performance on a Piagetian measure of the horizontality concept

A segmented container called the V-box was designed to train adult subjects who fail a Piagetian type measure of the horizontality concept. The first segment appears round when viewed from straight an and virtually all adults were able to predict correctly howthe water line would appear when this segment was half filled with water. Partitions can be removed and the water allowed to fill up the entire container which has straight-line boundaries. On a pretest, 28 of 43 subjects failedto indicate the water line correctly on the container, when its straight-line characteristics were apparent. Of these 28, 18 were able to do so after being exposed gradually to the container's rounded segment and, step by step, to its elongated segments with straight-line boundaries. The difference in pre- to posttest change in performance between these 18 subjects and the 10 control subjects was significant.
