Repeating Christmas jump in LIBOR

Background: London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) exists since 1986 as a benchmark interest rate. Methods: Using two-layer linear regression method, we found a pattern of shortterm nature in LIBOR behaviour. Results: To wit, 2-month LIBOR experiences a jump after Xmas for the last two decades. The direction and size of the jump depend on the data trend on 21 days before Xmas. Conclusions: The obtained results can be used to build a winning strategy on the Swap Market.

Memristor with a ferroelectric HfO2 layer: in which case it is a ferroelectric tunnel junction

New interest in the implementation of ferroelectric tunnel junctions has emerged following the discovery of ferroelectric properties in HfO2 films, which are fully compatible with silicon microelectronics technology. The coercive electric field to switch polarization direction in ferroelectric HfO2 is relatively high compared to classical perovskite materials, and thus it can cause the migration of non-ferroelectric charges in HfO2, namely charged oxygen vacancies. The charge redistribution would cause the change of the tunnel barrier shape and following change of the electroresistance effect. In the case of ambiguous ferroelectric properties of HfO2 ultrathin films, this oxygen-driven resistive switching effect can mimic the tunnel electroresistance effect. Here, we demonstrate two separate resistive switching regimes, depending on the applied voltage, in the same memristor device employing a ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (4.5 nm) layer. The first regime originates from the polarization reversal, whereas the second one is attributed to the accumulation/depletion of the oxygen vacancies at the electrode interface. The modulation of the tunnel barrier causes the enhancement of R OFF/R ON ratio in ∼20 times compared to the tunnel electroresistance effect. The developed device was used to formulate the criteria for unambiguous discrimination between the ferroelectric-and non-ferroelectric resistive switching effects in HfO2-based ferroelectric tunnel junctions.

Fatal Cases of Seasonal Influenza in Russia in 2015-2016

The influenza epidemic in 2015–2016 in Russia is characterized by a sharp increase of influenza cases (beginning from the second week of 2016) with increased fatalities. Influenza was confirmed in 20 fatal cases registered among children (0–10 years), in 5 cases among pregnant women, and in 173 cases among elderly people (60 years and older). Two hundred and ninety nine people died from influenza were patients with some chronic problems. The overwhelming majority among the deceased (more than 98%) were not vaccinated against influenza. We isolated 109 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and one A(H3N2) virus strains from 501 autopsy material samples. The antigenic features of the strains were similar to the vaccine strains. A phylogenic analysis of hemagglutinin revealed that influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus strains belonged to 6B genetic group that had two main dominant subgroups during the 2015–2016 season. In Russia strains of the first group predominated. We registered an increased proportion of strains with D222G mutation in receptor-binding site. A herd immunity analysis carried out immediately prior to the epidemic showed that 34.4% blood sera samples collected in different regions of Russia were positive to A/California/07/09(H1N1)pdm09. We came to a conclusion that public awareness enhancement is necessary to reduce unreasonable refusals of vaccination.

Growth and development of Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura) on salmonid and cyprinid hosts

The obligate fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni is strictly specific to salmonids and is very rarely found on other fish species. The ability of the parasite to grow and complete its life cycle on a cyprinid host, Rutilus rutilus, was compared with that on a typical salmonid host, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Rearing experiments were run for 42 d with newly hatched metanauplii in flow-through tanks. Body length and sex of the parasites were recorded every 5 d. Growth rates on O. mykiss exceeded those on R. rutilus from the age of 2 wk, at which time the parasites reached a length of about 3.5 mm. Males grew faster than females at the beginning of the experiment up to a length of 2.5 to 3.0 mm; thereafter, a faster growth rate was observed in females. In another experiment, association of parasites with the hosts was monitored and residence time defined as the period between attachment and first detachment from the host. Longer residence time was observed on O. mykiss than on R. rutilus; female parasites stayed on both fish species longer than did males. Faster growth of parasites could be associated with longer uninterrupted periods of attachment to hosts, since frequent detachment means higher energy losses and less time available for feeding. Despite its slower growth on R. rutilus, A. coregoni matured and laid egg clutches, but took 5 d longer than on O. mykiss. The potential of A. coregoni to complete its life cycle on cyprinids could have important ecological consequences, creating an infection reservoir when the main salmonid hosts are rare or temporarily missing.
