Knowledge and Behaviors of Foot Care in Muslims With Diabetes Mellitus: Does Islamic Ritual Ablution Make a Difference?

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to determine the relationship between ablution ritual and foot knowledge, self-care behaviors, and the presence of diabetic foot ulcers in Muslims with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

METHODOLOGY

A descriptive, comparative method was utilized to identify ablution ritual and foot knowledge, self-care behaviors, and the presence of diabetic foot ulcers.

RESULTS

There were 228 persons with T2DM, with 162 participants (71.1%) in the ablution group and 66 participants (28.9%) in the no-ablution group, with 19.7% having diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetic foot knowledge and foot self-care behaviors of persons with T2DM were below a medium level, and there was a significant difference between ablution behavior and the presence of diabetic foot ulcers (x2 =6.646, p<.05).

DISCUSSION

Culturally congruent interventions that acknowledge and understand the cultural practices and beliefs of Muslims with T2DM may be recommended to enhance their knowledge levels and promote positive behavior changes.

The relationship between coronavirus anxiety level and emotional eating in individuals with metabolic syndrome

This study used a descriptive, cross-sectional and relational screening model. The full sampling method was used in this study. The study was completed with 105 individuals with MetS attending the outpatient nutrition clinic and 109 non-MetS individuals without MetS diagnosis, who also attended the outpatient nutrition clinic. The data included anthropometric measurements, biochemical findings, blood pressure, a survey form, the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), and the Emotional Eating Scale (EES). The coronavirus anxiety scale scores of individuals with MetS were found to be statistically significantly higher than those of the non-MetS group (p <0.05). The difference in the emotional eating scale scores between the MetS and non-MetS groups was not significant (p <0.05). Individuals with MetS had higher coronavirus anxiety levels than those without MetS; however, there was no difference between participants with and without MetS in terms of emotional eating behavior.

The effect of local cold compresses for nitroglycerin-induced headache: An observational pretest-posttest study

BACKGROUND

Nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced headache is the most common side effect of nitrate therapy and negatively affects the quality of life.

AIMS

To assess the preventive and severity-reducing effect of cold compresses applied to the bilateral frontotemporal and occipital regions, where pain is most frequently experienced, for headache among individuals receiving intravenous NTG treatment.

STUDY DESIGN

This research used an observational, two-group, pretest-posttest design and was completed from October 2020 to May 2021 in the coronary intensive care unit of a state hospital located in the north of Turkey. The first group in the research had cold compresses applied for 20 min with the aid of an applicator at the start of NTG infusion, while the second group had the same implementation when headache developed during infusion.

RESULTS

Both groups were similar in terms of the demographic and clinical features of participants. In our study, more headache was observed in the group without local cold compresses at the start of infusion (53.3%) compared with the group with local cold compresses at the start of infusion (25.8%) (χ2  = 4.841, p = .028). In both groups, the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure values of patients significantly approached normal values after cold compresses. Patients with local cold compresses applied when headache developed had significantly different visual analog scale scores before (5.75) and after (2.00) the cold compresses application (z = 3.558, p = .000).

CONCLUSION

At the beginning of the infusion, local cold compresses application may prevent NTG-induced headache in patients without headache, and local cold compresses applied when headache develops may reduce the severity of NTG-induced headache.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Application of cold compresses immediately when treatment begins is recommended as a simple and effective practice with no side effects for patients receiving NTG treatment.

Evaluation of Childhood Obesity, Prevalence, and Related Factors in Istanbul

AIM

: Childhood obesity has become a global public health crisis. This study aims to determine the prevalence of obesity and related factors in primary school students in Istanbul.

Methods:

This research was conducted between May 2015 and January 2018. A school was selected from each of the districts of Istanbul and research was conducted in 39 primary schools. The study was conducted with a total of 5620 students aged 8–12. The students’ descriptive characteristics, eating habits, and activity levels were questioned using the Student Information Form. Subsequently, anthropometric measurements (height–weight) were performed for body mass index assessment.

Results:

The prevalence of childhood obesity was found to be 15.7%. This rate was 14.1% for female students and 17.3% for male students. Body mass index of students was related to durations of time spent on watching TV (r = .064, p < .05) and computer (r = .037, p < .05). In addition, the body mass index was differentiated by gender (p = .004); male students had a higher body mass index compared to female students, and body mass index was higher in those who skipped main meals (p = .001) and those who did not eat regular breakfast (p = .001).

Conclusion:

The prevalence of obesity in children was found to be quite high. It may easily be stated that obesity prevalence is rapidly increasing in Turkey; therefore, it should be done through regular screening programs, and preventive interventions should be planned.

The examination of the relationship between nursing students' depression, anxiety and stress levels and restrictive, emotional, and external eating behaviors in COVID-19 social isolation process

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between students' anxiety, depression, stress levels, and emotional, external, restrictive eating behaviors in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) process.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This study was conducted in included university involving 411 nursing students who completed the Personal Information Form, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale, and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman's correlation test were used to evaluate the data.

FINDINGS

In the correlation between Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale subscale scores, and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire subscale scores, there was no significant relationship between only depression and restrictive eating.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

It was determined that the COVID-19 pandemic process affected the mental health of nursing students and their eating behaviors.
