Mineral nutrient variability of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers with different colors grown in Niksar, Kazova and Artova locations of Tokat Province, Turkey

Potato is one of the most commonly consumed non-grain staple food crops in the world therefore, the mineral nutrient content of the potato is extremely important for human nutrition. The lack of mineral nutrients causes significant health problems, thus, many of these nutrients are often taken as supplements. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of potato flesh color and location on different mineral nutrient contents under Niksar, Kazova and Artova locations in Tokat Province, Turkey, during 2013 and 2014 potato growing seasons. The experimental design in each location was randomized blocks with three replications. In this study, a total of 67 clones (including varieties and advanced breeding selections) with nine white, 10 cream, 30 light yellow, and 18 dark yellow flesh colors were used. Potatoes with cream flesh colors had the highest K (23.81 g kg^-1), P (0.31 g kg^-1), Mg (1.20 g kg^-1), Zn (27.26 mg kg^-1), Cu (8.28 mg kg^-1) and Mn (7.21 mg kg^-1) contents, and the lowest Ca (45.6 mg kg^-1) content. The mineral contents (except K and Cu) of potatoes grown in Artova were higher compared to the other two locations. The results clearly suggested that Artova is the most suitable location to produce potatoes with a high mineral composition, and Kazova is suitable to cultivate potatoes with high K and Cu contents. In addition, the knowledge of nutrient rich potato accessions is valuable for developing biofortified potato genotypes.

The assessment of yield and quality traits of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) genotypes in middle Black Sea region, Turkey

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) cultivation in Turkey is concentrated in one province situated in Mediterranean region only, which would not fulfill the domestic needs of the country soon. Therefore, cultivation of the crop in other provinces/climatic regions should be initiated to fulfill the domestic needs. The cultivation in other provinces requires thorough assessment of yield and quality traits of target crop. Therefore, yield and quality characteristics of four sweet potato genotypes (i.e., ‘Hatay Kırmızısı’, ‘Hatay Yerlisi’, ‘Havuc’ and ‘Kalem’) were assessed in the current study in Kazova and Niksar counties of Tokat province of the country having middle Black Sea climate in field experiments during 2018 and 2019. The cuttings of the genotypes were planted in Niksar during the second fortnight of April and first week of May in Kazova. The planting density was kept 90 × 45 cm. Data relating to number of storage roots, storage root weight, storage root yield per hill and storage root yield per hectare were recorded. Furthermore, quality traits, including dry matter ratio (%), protein ratio (%) and antioxidant ratio (%) of storage roots were also determined. The highest total storage root yield was recorded for ‘Havuc’ genotype during both years and locations, followed by ‘Hatay Yerlisi’ and ‘Hatay Kırmızısı’ genotypes. Overall, storage root yield (60.06 and 62.40 tons ha^-1 during first and second year) recorded for the experiment at Niksar was higher than the storage root yield recorded for Kazova experiment (53.50 and 52.84 tons ha^-1 during first and second year, respectively). The highest dry matter was produced by ‘Kalem’ and ‘Hatay Yerlisi’ genotypes during both years and at both locations, followed by ‘Hatay Kırmızısı’ and ‘Havuc’ genotypes. The storage roots of the tested genotypes accumulated higher dry matter at Kazova during both years. The highest protein content was obtained from the ‘Kalem’ genotype, and the protein contents of the ‘Hatay Yerlisi’ and ‘Hatay Kırmızısı’ genotypes were close to the ‘Kalem’ genotype. The results indicated that tested genotypes can successfully be cultivated in middle Black Sea climate. Therefore, production of sweet potato can be initiated in the future to meet the domestic needs for sweet potato in the country.

The impact of haulm killing on yield and quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)

Disease-free and superior quality seed tubers could be obtained by haulm (vine) killing, which also reduces weight loss during storage. Higher resistance during storage ensures that seed tubers will be at the desired physiological age at the time of planting. The use of healthy seed tubers of appropriate physiological age will have positive impact on yield and quality. This study aimed to investigate the effects of haulm killing on seed potato yield and yield components (total tuber yield, average tuber yield/plant, number of tubers and average tuber weight) under semi-arid climate of Artova district in Tokat province, Turkey. The field studies were carried out during potato growing seasons of 2017 and 2018. The experiment consisted of two factors, i.e., potato cultivars and haulm killing. Five different potato cultivars, i.e., 'Agria', 'Marabel', 'Hermes', 'Marfona' and Madeleine were included in the study. The haulm killing treatments were 'haulm killing' and 'no haulm killing'. Haulm killing positively affected the number of tubers per plant and average tuber weight, which are directly related to the tuber yield. Tuber seed yield in the first and second year with haulm killing treatment was 40.78 and 44.05 tons/ha, respectively. The yield without haulm killing in the first and second years was 37.78 and 38.76 tons/ha, respectively. The dry matter ratio of tubers with haulm killing was 21.89% in 2017 and 22.35% during 2018. The dry matter ratio of tubers without haulm killing was 20.57% in 2016 and 21.03% during 2017. The results revealed haulm killing had positive impact on yield, yield-related parameters and dry matter content of seed tubers. Therefore, haulm killing is recommended for higher yield and better quality of seed tubers.

Assessment of the Physico-mechanical, Chemical and Colour Characteristics of Potatoes Depending on Tuber Size and Cultivar

In this study, four tuber sizes (28S1 45mm, 45S255mm, 55S365 mm and S465 mm) and three potato cultivars (Jelly, Milva and Sante) were used to assess the variations of physico-mechanical, chemical and colour properties depending on tuber size and potato cultivars. Physico-mechanical properties (geometric mean diameter, sphericity, surface area, bulk and tuber densities, volume, static coefficient of friction, puncture force and deformation), chemical properties (pH, total acidity [TA] and total soluble solid content [TSSC]), and colour characteristics (L, a, b) were determined. The physico-mechanical (geometric properties and puncture force) and chemical properties of potatoes were significantly affected by tuber sizes and cultivars, respectively. pH, TA and TSSC of potato tuber were higher in Milva, TA was higher in Jelly and TSSC was higher in Sante than in those of the other cultivars, respectively.
