Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among family members, and analyze associated risk factors. Methods: The current investigation was a cross-sectional study. The Qinghai region was stratified into urban areas, agricultural areas, and pastoral areas. The urban areas of Xining City, the agricultural areas of Haidong City, and the pastoral areas of Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture were selected. A total of 396 resident families (1 131 people) who underwent health checkups from 2021 to 2022 in the above areas were included in the survey study. Questionnaires were administered and H. pylori infection was detected using the 13C-urea breath test. Numerical data were expressed as cases and percentages, and the Chi-square test was used to compare differences in H. pylori infection rates in the populations and families in each group. Multifactorial logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors for H. pylori infection, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of H. pylori infection in Qinghai province was 52.8% (597/1 131) and the prevalence of H. pylori infection in households was 80.6% (319/396). In H. pylori-positive households with at least 1 infected spouse, 40.4% (36/89) had only 1 infected spouse, and in 59.6% (53/89) both spouses were infected. In analysis of children infected by parents with H. pylori, 20.0% (9/45) of households had fathers and children infected, 48.9% (22/45) had mothers and children infected, and 31.1% (14/45) had both parents and children infected. In univariate analysis there was a statistically significant difference in the overall comparison of H. pylori infection rates among families with different numbers of people living together (χ2=11.12, P=0.004), and between-group comparisons suggested that H. pylori infection rates were higher in families with 4 or 5 people and more than 5 people living together than in families with 2 or 3 people living together. The H. pylori infection rate was higher in families that did not use serving chopsticks and spoons during family meals than in families that did use serving chopsticks and spoons (χ2=6.12, P=0.013). In multifactorial logistic regression analyses the number of people living together in a family and whether or not serving chopsticks and spoons were used at family meals were associated with H. pylori infection (P<0.05). Conclusion: The H. pylori infection rate in families in Qinghai Province is high, and there is a clear association with family aggregation. It is more common for both members of a couple to be infected, and H. pylori infection of a mother has a greater effect on the children's infection status than H. pylori infection of a father. The infection rate of H. pylori was lower in families that used serving chopsticks and spoons during dinner gatherings, and the fewer the number of people living together in the family, the lower the H. pylori infection rate.

Abstract
In this study, cooked brown rice (BR), germinated brown rice (GBR), fermented brown rice (FBR) and white rice (WR) were prepared by traditional cooking techniques, and extruded brown rice (EBR) was obtained by extrusion processing technology. The nutritional, cooking and sensory properties of different BR products were investigated. The results indicated that the soluble dietary fiber (SDF) content, free total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS, T-AOC) in processed BR products were significantly higher than those in cooked BR and WR. The values of SDF, free TPC, TFC and T-AOC in EBR increased by 38.78%, 232.36%, 102.01% and 153.92%, respectively, compared with cooked BR. Cooked FBR and EBR had more nutrients, required less cooking time, had a softer texture and were whiter than cooked GBR and BR, especially EBR. In addition, the water absorption rate of EBR was 14.29% and 25.41% higher than that of cooked FBR and GBR. The hardness of EBR was significantly lower than that of cooked FBR and BR, even lower than that of cooked WR. However, there was no significant difference between the hardness of cooked GBR and that of cooked BR. The flavor compounds in EBR were similar to that of cooked WR, while those in cooked GBR and FBR did not differ greatly compared to cooked BR. Collectively, cooked FBR and EBR had better nutritional value, cooking and sensory properties than cooked BR, and the comprehensive value of EBR was higher.

Abstract
Objective: To develop and validate a deep learning model based on fundus photos for the identification of coronary heart disease (CHD) and associated risk factors. Methods: Subjects aged>18 years with complete clinical examination data from 149 hospitals and medical examination centers in China were included in this retrospective study. Two radiologists, who were not aware of the study design, independently evaluated the coronary angiography images of each subject to make CHD diagnosis. A deep learning model using convolutional neural networks (CNN) was used to label the fundus images according to the presence or absence of CHD, and the model was proportionally divided into training and test sets for model training. The prediction performance of the model was evaluated in the test set using monocular and binocular fundus images respectively. Prediction efficacy of the algorithm for cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., age, systolic blood pressure, gender) and coronary events were evaluated by regression analysis using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and R2 correlation coefficient. Results: The study retrospectively collected 51 765 fundus images from 25 222 subjects, including 10 255 patients with CHD, and there were 14 419 male subjects in this cohort. Of these, 46 603 fundus images from 22 701 subjects were included in the training set and 5 162 fundus images from 2 521 subjects were included in the test set. In the test set, the deep learning model could accurately predict patients' age with an R2 value of 0.931 (95%CI 0.929-0.933) for monocular photos and 0.938 (95%CI 0.936-0.940) for binocular photos. The AUC values for sex identification from single eye and binocular retinal fundus images were 0.983 (95%CI 0.982-0.984) and 0.988 (95%CI 0.987-0.989), respectively. The AUC value of the model was 0.876 (95%CI 0.874-0.877) with either monocular fundus photographs and AUC value was 0.885 (95%CI 0.884-0.888) with binocular fundus photographs to predict CHD, the sensitivity of the model was 0.894 and specificity was 0.755 with accuracy of 0.714 using binocular fundus photographs for the prediction of CHD. Conclusion: The deep learning model based on fundus photographs performs well in identifying coronary heart disease and assessing related risk factors such as age and sex.

Abstract
The protein hydrolysate of purple speckled kidney bean (PSKB) was used as the raw material in this study, and the antioxidant peptide of the PSKB protein hydrolysate was purified using macroporous resin. The XAD-7HP macroporous resin was selected as the best purification material, and the static adsorption-desorption of the purified PSKB antioxidant peptide was optimized. The optimum static adsorption and desorption conditions were as follows: the adsorption capacity reached 11.93 ± 0.11 mg/ml at pH 7 for 24 h, and the desorption capacity was 5.24 ± 0.04 mg/ml with 60% ethanol for 30 min. Under this condition, the amount of antioxidant peptide obtained by adsorption-desorption was the highest. The optimum process conditions were as follows: the appropriate flow rate was 1 ml/min, and the optimal injection volume was 40 ml. The adsorption amount at this time can reach 12.19 ± 0.15 mg/ml. The components with an elution time of 10-30 min were separated using the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) technique to obtain three main components, namely, RP1, RP2, and RP3. The DPPH free radical scavenging ability reached 56.26 ± 0.56, 66.42 ± 0.56, and 78.57 ± 0.56%, respectively, which were 36.65, 46.34 ± 0.56, and 54.39 ± 0.56% higher than those before purification. The amino acid sequences of the three components were identified as Phe-Leu-Val-Asp-Arg-Ile, Phe-Leu-Val-Ala-Pro-Asp-Asp, and Lys-Asp-Arg-Val-Ile-Ser-Glu-Leu.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of perioperative chemotherapy on the prognosis of gastric cancer patients under real-world condition. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out. Real world data of gastric cancer patients receiving perioperative chemotherapy and surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy in 33 domestic hospitals from January 1, 2014 to January 31, 2016 were collected. Inclusion criteria: (1) gastric adenocarcinoma was confirmed by histopathology, and clinical stage was cT2-4aN0-3M0 (AJCC 8th edition); (2) D2 radical gastric cancer surgery was performed; (3) at least one cycle of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) was completed; (4) at least 4 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) [SOX (S-1+oxaliplatin) or CapeOX (capecitabine + oxaliplatin)] were completed. Exclusion criteria: (1) complicated with other malignant tumors; (2) radiotherapy received; (3) patients with incomplete data. The enrolled patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy were included in the perioperative chemotherapy group, and those who received only postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy were included in the surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy group. Propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to control selection bias. The primary outcome were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) after PSM. OS was defined as the time from the first neoadjuvant chemotherapy (operation + adjuvant chemotherapy group: from the date of operation) to the last effective follow-up or death. PFS was defined as the time from the first neoadjuvant chemotherapy (operation + adjuvant chemotherapy group: from the date of operation) to the first imaging diagnosis of tumor progression or death. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the survival rate, and the Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the independent effect of perioperative chemo therapy on OS and PFS. Results: 2 045 cases were included, including 1 293 cases in the surgery+adjuvant chemotherapy group and 752 cases in the perioperative chemotherapy group. After PSM, 492 pairs were included in the analysis. There were no statistically significant differences in gender, age, body mass index, tumor stage before treatment, and tumor location between the two groups (all P>0.05). Compared with the surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy group, patients in the perioperative chemotherapy group had higher proportion of total gastrectomy (χ(2)=40.526, P<0.001), smaller maximum tumor diameter (t=3.969, P<0.001), less number of metastatic lymph nodes (t=1.343, P<0.001), lower ratio of vessel invasion (χ(2)=11.897, P=0.001) and nerve invasion (χ(2)=12.338, P<0.001). In the perioperative chemotherapy group and surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy group, 24 cases (4.9%) and 17 cases (3.4%) developed postoperative complications, respectively, and no significant difference was found between two groups (χ(2)=0.815, P=0.367). The median OS of the perioperative chemotherapy group was longer than that of the surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy group (65 months vs. 45 months, HR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.62-0.89, P=0.001); the median PFS of the perioperative chemotherapy group was also longer than that of the surgery+adjuvant chemotherapy group (56 months vs. 36 months, HR=0.72, 95% CI:0.61-0.85, P<0.001). The forest plot results of subgroup analysis showed that both men and women could benefit from perioperative chemotherapy (all P<0.05); patients over 45 years of age (P<0.05) and with normal body mass (P<0.01) could benefit significantly; patients with cTNM stage II and III presented a trend of benefit or could benefit significantly (P<0.05); patients with signet ring cell carcinoma benefited little (P>0.05); tumors in the gastric body and gastric antrum benefited more significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: Perioperative chemotherapy can improve the prognosis of gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
Objective:To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of frontal sinus balloon for frontal sinus surgery with frontal sinus balloon dilatation and conventional frontal sinus surgery. Method:One thousand four hundred and eighty-nine cases from 2013 to 2018 were collected. The surgical methods included frontal sinus balloon dilatation, frontal sinus balloon assisted FESS and Stammberger frontal sinus removal. The preoperative and postoperative data of 1 125 patients were collected and the rate of loss of follow-up was 24.44%. All patients underwent endoscopic, CT and symptom scores before and after operation. The postoperative follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 8 years. The postoperative nasal endoscopy and CT review were recorded. Lund-Kenndy endoscopic scores were performed on the frontal sinus mucosa of patients 1-6 months after surgery. Result:In the simple frontal sinus balloon dilatation group, 59 cases were cured, 37 cases were cured, 20 cases were improved, 2 cases were ineffective, and the frontal sinus opening rate was 96.61%. The frontal sinus balloon assisted FESS group was 609 cases, 381 cases were cured, and 169 cases were improved. There were 59 cases ineffective, 8 of which were cured after the second operation, and the frontal sinus opening rate was 90.31%; Stammberger went to the eggshell group in 457 cases, recovered 285 cases, improved in 122 cases, and ineffective in 50 cases, including 13 cases. After the second operation, the patient was cured after the second operation. Two cases of postoperative sinus ostium adhesions were cured. The balloon was dilated after the expansion of the outpatient clinic. The frontal sinus opening rate was 89.06%. Nasal endoscopy scores were statistically analyzed using SPSS 19.0 software. Conclusion:Frontal sinus balloon dilatation is suitable for most frontal sinus lesions and is safer than traditional endoscopic frontal sinus surgery. Compared with Stammberger's eggshell surgery, frontal sinus balloon dilatation has the advantages of simple and easy operation, short learning curve, convenient and accurate, and worthy of clinical promotion.

Abstract
This is a complicated and difficult case. The onset symptom of a 62-year-old male was recurrent intestinal obstruction. Ileocecal and ileocolic operation was done twice. Massive gastrointestinal bleeding occurred due to giant fistula of descending duodenum, which connected to ileocolic anastomosis. After consultation by multidisciplinary team, jejunal-feeding tube was placed to provide enteral nutrition. With general condition improving, duodenal fistula repair and involved bowel resection were performed. Postoperative pathology confirmed Crohn's disease. The patient was treated with thalidomide and recovered well during follow-up.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and therapy of rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). METHODS Clinical findings, morphologic features, immunophenotype and prognosis of 53 cases (58 samples) of rectal GISTs were investigated. RESULTS Thirty-three patients were male and 20 were female. The age of patients ranged from 19 to 81 years, with an average of 49.7 years. The main symptoms included rectal disorders in 29 patients and vaginal mass in 2 patients, while the tumors in 22 patients were found by routine physical examination. Thirty-five primary GISTs were resected completely without preoperative therapy, and thirteen tumors were resected after therapy of imatinib. Five tumors were recurrent. Imatinib therapy in 13 patients led to smaller and softer tumor mass grossly and decreased cellularity and marked degeneration histologically. Of the 35 primary rectal GISTs, there were 17 (48.6%), 6 (17.1%), 0(0), and 12 (34.3%) cases diagnosed as very low risk, low risk, medium risk, and high risk respectively. Eight cases had tumor of 1 cm or less in diameter. In the five recurrent cases, the tumors showed increased cellularity, mitotic figures, and Ki-67 index. Imatinib therapy led to smaller and softer tumor mass grossly and decreased cellularity and marked degeneration histologically. Immunohistochemical stains showed CD117, DOG1, and CD34 positivity, S-100 protein negativity and indefinite SMA stain. CONCLUSIONS Rectal GISTs are rare tumors with a male predominance.Patients without obvious sypmtoms are found by themselves and by routine physical examination. The tumor diameter less than 2 cm is common while larger than 5 cm is few. Diagnosis of rectal GISTs is easily made by biopsy and patients often acquire preoperative therapy for preserving anal sphincter function.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of apigenin (AP) on arthritis in rats stimulated by Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) was the main purpose of the investigation. Arthritis model was established by the administration of 0.1 ml FCA in the palmar surface. AP and diclofenac sodium (DS) were administered to explore and evidence the protective effects against adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA). Cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were detected to assess the anti-inflammatory effect of AP. Besides, pathological conditions were examined in rat paws. Related-proteins of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signal pathway activated by P2X7 were investigated to determine the molecular mechanism of AP and their expressions were measured by western blot. The data showed that AP significantly suppressed the expressions of P2X7/NF-κB signal-related proteins and alleviated inflammatory reactions. Therefore, it was assumed that AP might be a potential therapeutic candidate to treat arthritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the protective and sensitive effects of melatonin (MLT) in the treatment of breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS ER+ breast cancer rat model was established and then rats were randomly divided into five different groups as follows: control group, Diss group, adriamycin (ADM) group, MLT group, and MLT combined with adriamycin (M+A) group. Tumor weights and one month survival rate were compared among these groups. In addition, changes of tumor tissues and expression of E-cadherin were observed under optical microscopy or electro-microscopy. RESULTS Tumor weights were significantly lighter in M+A group than those in ADM group (p < 0.05). Under optical and electro-microscopy, tumor cell apoptosis was obviously increased in MLT group, and tumor cell injury was more severe in M+A group than that in ADM group; additionally, expression of E-cadherin was higher in MLT group and M+A group than that in other groups. Moreover, MLT group had the highest one month survival rate (100%), there was the poorest life quality in ADM group, but the best life quality in MLT. CONCLUSION MLT could enhance the sensitivity of tumor to ADM in vivo and improve patient's life quality.

Abstract
The experiments of elicitation and in situ adsorption were conducted in shake flasks and then tested in a modified bubble column bioreactor for enhancing the productions of three active metabolites in Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f., triptolide, wilforgine and wilforine. Methyl jasmonate was screened out as the elicitor and the non-ionic polymeric ion-exchange resin of Amberlite(®) XAD-7 was used for in situ product removal and protecting the alkaloids from degradation in the medium. In shake flask experiments, 3.55-fold, 49.11-fold, and 10.40-fold of triptolide, wilforgine, and wilforine, respectively, could be recovered from the medium and XAD-7 resin by elicitation and in situ product removal, compared with the control. The modified 10 L bubble column bioreactor had similar productions of the three active metabolites but needed a further optimization of parameters for better growth of adventitious roots.

Abstract
Near-isogenic lines (NILs) and their recurrent parent Chancellor (Cc) were used to identify restriction fragment length polymorphic markers linked to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis (DC.) E.O. Speer f.sp. tritici) resistance genes Pm1, Pm2, Pm3, and Pm4 in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell). By mapping these polymorphic markers in F2 progenies from crosses of the NILs with Cc, it was found that Pm1 cosegregated with a polymorphic locus detected by DNA probe CDO347; Pm2 was linked to a locus detected by probe BCD1871 with a distance of 3.5 cM; Pm3b was linked to a locus detected by probe BCD1434 with a distance of 1.3 cM; Pm4a cosegregated with Xbcd1231-2A(2) and Xcdo678-2A, and was closely flanked by Xbcd1231-2A(1) and Xbcd292-2A both with a distance of 1.5 cM. Aneuploid mapping of these markers indicated that locus Xcdo347-7A is on 7AL, Xbcd1871-5D on 5DS, Xbcd1434-1A on 1AS, and loci Xbcd292-2A and Xcdo678-2A are on 2AL. The same polymorphic fragments detected in the Pm3b NIL by Xbcd1434-1A were found in Pm3a NIL using several enzyme digestions.

Abstract
The temporal and spatial distributions of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in surface water of the Liaodong Bay were studied based on samples collected at 16 sites in June and August from 2001 to 2005. The temporal distribution showed decreasing trends. The concentrations of dissolved metals in the Liaodong Bay were 4.34, 3.21, 31.54, and 0.995 mug/L for Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd, respectively. Cu and Pb were scattered near the estuaries, and Zn and Cd were mainly found near the Wuli River. Rivers were the main metals pollution sources in the Bay.

Abstract
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious disease in wheat and barley affecting both yield and quality. To identify genes for resistance to infection, the RIL population derived from 'Nanda2419' x 'Wangshuibai' and the parents were evaluated for percentage of infected spikes (PIS) in four different environments. Using a 2,960 cM marker framework map constructed for this population, ten chromosome regions were detected for their association with type I resistance through interval mapping with Mapmaker/QTL, among which QTLs mapped in the intervals of Xwmc349--Xgwm149 on chromosome 4B, of Xwmc96--Xgwm304 on chromosome 5A and of Xgwm408--Xbarc140 on chromosome 5B were revealed in at least three environments and have Wangshuibai as the source of resistance alleles. Qfhi.nau-4B and Qfhi.nau-5A had larger effects and explained up to 17.5 and 27.0% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. To detect epistasis QTLs, two-locus interactions were examined by whole genome scan. Interactions of five locus pairs were found to have significant effects on type I resistance with the LOD score ranging 3.8-6.5 and four of them conferred resistance in parental phase. The one with the most significant effect was Xcfd42--Xgwm469 (6D)/Xwmc390-2--Xbd04 (2A) pair. No QTL x E interaction was detected for PIS. It was found that flowering time did not have significant effects on PIS in this population. Our studies indicated that Wangshuibai is useful for breeding for both type I and type II scab resistance and the markers associated with the QTLs could be used in marker-assisted selection and isolation of scab-resistance QTLs.

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that overexpression of Cdc25B in transgenic mice resulted in mammary gland hyperplasia and increased steroid hormone responsiveness. To address how Cdc25B enhances the hormone responsiveness in mammary glands, we showed that Cdc25B stimulates steroid receptor-dependent transcription in transient transfection assays and in a cell-free assay with chromatin templates. Surprisingly, the effect of Cdc25B on steroid receptors is independent of its protein phosphatase activity in vitro. The direct interactions of Cdc25B with steroid receptors, on the other hand, were evidenced in in vivo and in vitro assays, suggesting the potential direct contribution of Cdc25B on the steroid receptor-mediated transcription. In addition, p300/CBP-associated factor and CREB binding protein were shown to interact and synergize with Cdc25B and further enhance its coactivation activity. Thus, we have uncovered a novel function of Cdc25B that serves as a steroid receptor coactivator in addition to its role as a regulator for cell cycle progression. This dual function might likely contribute to its oncogenic action in breast cancer.

Abstract
The dwarf gene Rht3 derived from Tom Thumb variety, a Tibetan wheat of China, is a dominant gene with the insensitivity to gibberellic acid. Rht3 shows to depress alpha-amylase activity and hence enchance the resistance to preharvest sprouting mainly through its effect on the expression of alpha-Amy1. Near isogenic lines with Rht3 and their segregating population were analyzed by PCR and RFLP techonology. In RAPD analysis, out of 310 random primers (10 bp) screened, only three primers of UBC389, OPV-06 and S1060 revealed polymorphisms in NIL from 310 random primers. Fragments S1060(1900) and S1060(2000) amplified by primer S1060 were shown to be linked to Rht3 with a genetic distance 7.1 cM and 9.2 cM. Fifty-three probes specific for short arms of homoeologous group 4 were screened in RFLP analysis. Xpsr584, XksuF8 and Xcdo38 showed polymorphisms between the NIL. The linkage analysis indicateded that Xpsr584 was linked to Rht3 with a genetic distance 8.0 cM.

Abstract
A Triticum aestivum-Haynaldia villosa 6VS/6AL translocation line contained powdery mildew resistance gene Pm21 which is effective against all the current biotypes of Erygsiphe gramins. Cloning of the related genes for powdery mildew resistance is significance for understanding its resistance mechanism and disease resistance breeding. Using RT-PCR and RACE technology, a wheat pathogenesis related protein 1 cDNA clone (TaPr-1) corresponding to a mRNA differentially induced in resistant 6VS/6AL translocation line compared to susceptible wheat cultivar "Yangmai 5" by powdery mildew infection was isolated and characterized. This sequence contained 823 bp and had an open reading frame (ORF) containing 164 amino acids with 24 amino acids in the putative signal peptide and 140 amino acids comprising the mature peptide (15.1 kD). The deduced amino acid sequence showed close homology to PR-1 like proteins, which have been isolated from many plants. Northern blot analysis revealed the most abundantly accumulation of the corresponding mRNA 12 h after infection in translocation line (6VS/6AL). The obviously difference in the expression of the PRw-1 was also observed between resistant translocation line (6VS/6AL) and susceptible parent "Yangmai 5", it showed the TaPr-1 gene is related to powdery mildew resistance. Southern blot indicated that the wheat genome contains more than one copies of TaPr-1 genes, and there are polymorphism between translocation lines and "Yanmai 5", the result shows that 6VS may contain TaPr-1 genes.

Abstract
Pm6 transferred from Triticum timopheevii L. to common wheat, is an effective resistance gene to powdery mildew disease caused by Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici. The RAPD technique, employing a total of 700 decamer primers, was used to identify polymorphic markers between resistant (IGVI463) and susceptible (Prins) near-isogenic lines. Primer OPV20 produced a 2,000 base pair (bp) reproducible fragment only in the resistant near-isogenic line. The 2,000-bp DNA fragment was present in all other introgression lines containing Pm6. Using the F2 mapping population from a cross of IGVI-463 (PI170914/7*Prins) x Prins, Pm6 was shown to be closely linked to the marker OPV20-2000 at a genetic distance of 3.0 +/- 2.2 cM. The marker was successfully used in detecting the presence of Pm6 in different genetic backgrounds.

Abstract
In Beijing, the notification rate of smear-positive tuberculosis (TB) has been below 20 per 100,000 since 1986, and continues to decline. To accurately measure the risk of TB infection in a population in which the results of tuberculin skin testing were not confounded by vaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), BCG vaccination at birth was discontinued from 1988 in Shun-yi County. In 1995, the prevalence of TB infection among 12,836 primary school children aged 6 to 7 yr and without BCG scars was 1.4%, giving an estimated annual risk of infection of 0.19% (95% confidence interval: 0.16 to 0.22%). The prevalence of TB infection in children aged 5 to 9 yr in Beijing in 1950 was 46%. The number of cases of tuberculous meningitis did not increase after discontinuation of BCG. We conclude that discontinuation of BCG had no detectable harmful effects, and that control of TB in Beijing has markedly reduced the prevalence of TB infection since 1950.

Abstract
In order to understand the pathogenesis of gastric lymphoma, we investigated the association of H.pylori infection with lymphoid follicular hyperplasia. Eighty-four gastric specimens removed for gastroduodenal ulcer were histologically examined. The distribution and prevalence of H. pylori, neutrophilic and lymphocytic infiltration, mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and lymphoid follicles were scored. The lymphoid follicles were more frequently observed in H.pylori positive cases. They indicated a positive correlation with the score of H. pylori. When follicular gastritis (FG) was defined as a case in which the secondary lymphoid follicles (Lf2) numbered two or more per one centimeter of mucosa in the pyloric gland area of the lesser curvature, twenty specimens out of the 84 (24%) fit that definition. All of the FG cases were H.pylori positive, and they displayed high H. pylori scores. It was supposed that most FG cases would ultimately lead to atrophic gastritis, whereas H.pylori would gradationally decrease or disappear in accordance with the aging and progression of intestinal metaplasia. The histological features of the FG cases, however, were similar to the background mucosal state of early-stage MALT-type gastric lymphoma. We may conclude that H. pylori infection is one cause of the FG, which may be a high-risk condition that gives rise to MALT-type gastric lymphoma.

Abstract
Cdc25 A and B are dual-specificity phosphatases which have been implicated in neoplastic transformation. Although Cdc25A and Cdc25B have been found to be over-expressed in many cancer cell lines and primary tumors, the physiological roles of Cdc25A and B in vivo are largely undefined. To investigate the roles of these proteins in the oncogenic transformation of the mammary gland we used the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) promoter to target over-expression of the Cdc25B transgene in the mammary glands of transgenic mouse lines. Here we report that the over-expression of Cdc25B enhances the proliferation of mammary epithelial cells resulting in the formation of precocious alveolar hyperplasia. At the molecular level, marked increases in cyclin D1 protein have been found in transgenic mammary epithelial cells. The accelerated growth rate of the mammary epithelial cells could also be attributed to the increased levels of cyclin E/cdk2 activity. In addition, a pronounced decrease in apoptosis was also observed during the involution of mammary gland. The reduction of apoptosis during involution correlated well with the reduced expression of c-myc and p53, both of which have been implicated in apoptosis. Taken together, our results clearly indicate that the deregulated expression of Cdc25B generates mammary gland hyperplasia.

Abstract
A U(2) algebraic model is presented to describe stretching vibrations of XYn (n = 2, 3, and 4) systems, where anharmonic interactions between the bond modes are considered. This model in a limit corresponds to an anharmonically coupled local-mode model. As an example, the model for a molecule XY4 is applied to recently observed spectra of methane in both gas and liquid phases, and the results obtained are in good agreement with the experiments. Abstract
Estrogens play an important role in the development and progression of breast cancer. Although estrogen antagonist treatment often results in the arrest or remission of breast cancer growth, most breast cancers recur and become resistant to estrogen ablative therapy. The molecular mechanisms underlying these actions remain largely undefined. It is hypothesized that tumor cells of an advanced stage may develop compensatory pathways to stimulate the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) target genes or downstream events, independent of estrogen action. In this study, we developed a chimeric repressor to turn off ER target genes with the aim of directly investigating the role of ER target genes in tumor progression. The chimeric repressor contains the ER DNA-binding domain that recognizes estrogen response elements (EREs), a Krupple-associated box (KRAB) repressor domain which silences target genes when tethered to their promoter regions and a truncated progesterone ligand-binding domain which responds only to the exogenous synthetic ligand, RU486. The ability of the chimeric repressor to block ER mediated transcription was assessed in transient transfection assays. ER-induced reporter activity was inhibited by the repressor in a dose-dependent manner, with the maximum effect of more than 80% reduction. The inhibitory activity of the chimeric repressor was tightly under the control of RU486. Effective suppression by the repressor on the natural promoter of ER target gene, complement factor 3 (C3), was also observed. The inhibitory activity was specific to ER, since the repressor has no effect on other nuclear receptor systems tested. Furthermore, the repressor could inhibit the 4-hydroxy-tamoxifen (4OH-T)-induced ER activity. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the inducible repressor we have designed could specifically inhibit ER target gene expression in response to an exogenous synthetic ligand. This repressor will provide a useful tool to study the role of ER target genes in breast cancer progression and it may be potentially useful for gene therapy of breast cancer.

Abstract
Estrogens modulate the density of opioid receptors in selected brain areas; however, it is not clear whether they exert such an effect directly on the cells which express the opioid receptors. Therefore, we analyzed the binding of [3H]-diprenorphine in human neuroblastoma cells stably transfected with the estrogen receptor cDNA (SK-ER3 cell line). A 16-hour exposure of these cells with 1 nM 17beta-estradiol induces a progressive morphological differentiation which appears clearly established 6 days after the suspension of the treatment. The binding of [3H]-diprenorphine was then measured immediately after the exposure to 17beta-estradiol (16 h) as well as 6 days later. The results shows that the number of opioid receptors in SK-ER3 cells is unaffected at 16 h but appears significantly reduced at 6 days. This effect is blocked by the estrogen antagonist ICI-182780, and is coincident to a decrease of the inhibitory effect of morphine on cyclic AMP accumulation. Binding experiments performed using selective ligands suggest that the micro subclass of opioid receptors is down-regulated by estradiol in SK-ER3 cells.

Abstract
Oestrogens are the key factor in the sexual differentiation of the mammalian brain and play an important role in the activity of selected areas of the mature brain. To pursue the study of oestrogen action on neural cells at the molecular level, we developed a human neuroblastoma cell line (SK-ER3) expressing the oestrogen receptor (ER). Treatment of these cells with 17beta-oestradiol causes growth arrest and morphological and biochemical differentiation. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether oestrogen-differentiated SK-ER3 neuroblastoma cells acquire the ability to synthesize a specific neurotransmitter and whether the growth arrest previously reported can be ascribed to the blockage of the cells at a specific stage of the cell cycle. The results presented here indicate that oestrogens induce accumulation of SK-ER3 cells in the G0 phase of the cell cycle, underscoring the acquisition of a mature neural phenotype upon hormonal treatment. Most importantly, we show that in the differentiated cells the content of tyrosine hydroxylase and Na+-dependent dopamine uptake is significantly augmented, proving that the oestrogen-differentiated SK-ER3 cells can synthesize and store a specific neurotransmitter. In addition, we prove that the dopamine accumulated in differentiated SK-ER3 cells can be released. These studies therefore suggest that oestrogen treatment results in the acquisition of a fully functional dopaminergic phenotype of SK-ER3 cells. Ample evidence shows a link between dopaminergic neurons and oestrogen activity in hypothalamic and non-hypothalamic areas of the mammalian brain. Our study indicates that oestrogens might play a primary role in committing undifferentiated neuroblasts towards the dopaminergic phenotype.

Abstract
Insulin is a well known mitotic agent for neuroblastoma cells. Human SK-N-BE neuroblastoma cells stably transfected with the estrogen receptor, however, undergo growth arrest and differentiation when treated with insulin. These effects were shown to be due to an insulin-dependent activation of the unliganded estrogen receptor. Here, we demonstrate that this activation involves the AF-2 COOH-terminal domain of the estrogen receptor and that the communication between estrogen and insulin receptor systems occurs via selected and specific transduction signals. In fact, by the use of dominant negative and dominant positive mutants we demonstrate that p21ras is essential for insulin and estrogen receptor coupling. With pharmacological tools, we prove that PI 3'kinase does not contribute to this cross-talk and that protein kinase C triggers transduction signals that act in synergism with p21ras. These results prove the intricacy of all these intracellular paths of communication. The finding that, in neuroblastoma cells, selected signal transduction systems are involved in the insulin-dependent activation of estrogen receptor is of particular interest considering that estrogen receptor might restrict the role played by insulin during the differentiation of neural cells and interfere with its proliferative potential while allowing its regulation of other functions related to cell survival.

Abstract
Microsatellites have emerged as an important source of genetic markers for eukaryotic genomes. In this report, two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genomic libraries were screened for several di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide tandem repeats. Clones containing (AC)n, (AG)n, (TCT)n, and (TTG)n repeats were isolated and sequenced. On average, there was one (AC)n microsatellite every 292 kbp and one (AG)n microsatellite every 212 kbp. The trinucleotide tandem repeats (TCT)n and (TTG)n were about 10 times less common than the two dinucleotide tandem repeats tested and tetranucleotide tandem repeats were rare. Many of the microsatellites had more than 10 repeats. The maximum repeat number found for (AC)n was 36 and for (TCT)n was more than 50. The prevailing category of (AG)n microsatellites from (AG)n isolates was perfect repeats. About half of the (AC)n microsatellites were compound repeats, while most of the (TCT)n microsatellites were imperfect repeats. In a small sample, (TTG)n microsatellites consisted mainly of compound repeats. The most frequently associated repeats were (AC)n with (AG)n, (TCT)n with (TCC)n, and (TTG)n with (TGG)n. Among 32 pairs of microsatellite primers surveyed, seven produced polymorphic products in the expected size range and these loci were mapped using a hexaploid wheat mapping population or aneuploid stocks.

Abstract
Estrogens are known to modulate the growth rate and differentiation state of a number of cells. In uterine, as well as in mammary tumor cells, estrogen-dependent proliferation and differentiation are correlated to a series of biochemical responses, including increased expression of proto-oncogenes such as: c-fos, c-jun and c-myc. Since estrogens were shown to regulate the proliferation and the differentiation state of cells of nervous origin, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether these effects were associated to changes in the expression of early genes. In the model system utilized, the human cell line SK-ER3, an increase in c-fos mRNA and Fos protein without change of c-jun and related genes mRNA concentration was observed after short term treatment with 17 beta-estradiol (E2). A significant decrease of c-fos, c-jun and jun-D proto-oncogene mRNA levels were found after prolonged hormonal treatment. The exposure to the hormone did not determine any change in N-myc expression. Since the three protooncogene mRNAs are rapidly induced following estrogen treatment in other cell systems and target tissues, it is concluded that the estrogen-induced differentiation of neuroblastoma cells is correlated to a pattern of expression of early genes that might be peculiar for the activity of this hormone in neural cells.

Abstract
Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis of a role played by estrogens in the manifestation of affective disorders in women. The analysis of the mechanism of action of a number of antidepressant drugs clearly demonstrated the involvement of the catecholaminergic system in the etiology of these complex behavioral pathologies. The present in vitro study was therefore undertaken to investigate the presence of a functional link between estrogen and catecholamine metabolism in cells of neural origin. The model system utilized was a human neuroblastoma cell line which was obtained by stable transfection of the estrogen receptor cDNA (SK-ER3). The present study shows that in SK-ER3 activation of the estrogen receptor correlates with a marked decrease in monoamine oxidase A activity. This effect is observed following treatment with a physiological concentration of 17 beta-estradiol and can be blocked by the specific antagonist of the steroid receptor, ICI 182,780. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP acting, like estrogens, on the state of differentiation of SK-ER3 cells did not affect monoamine oxidase A activity. The present study provides strong evidence of a strict relationship between estrogen receptor and monoamine oxidase A activity in human cells of neural origin, thus favoring the hypothesis of an antidepressive effect of estrogens exerted via inhibition of the monoamine oxidative pathway.

Abstract
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers were used to map male fertility restoring gene that was transferred from chromosome 6U of Aegilops umbellulata Zhuk. to wheat. Segments of chromosome 6U bearing the gene that restore fertility to T. timopheevi Zhuk. male sterile cytoplasm were identified in all four translocation lines by two probes, BCD21 and BCD342. Lines 040-5, 061-1 and 061-4 are T6BL.6BS-6U translocations, while line 2114 is a T6AL.6AS-6U translocation. Line 2114 has a much larger 6U chromosomal segment and lower frequency of transmission of male gametes with the alien segment than the other three lines. The restoring gene carried by the 6U segment in 2114 showed high expressivity and complete penetrance. This restoring gene is designated Rf6. A homoeologous chromosome recombination mechanism is discussed for the alien gene transfer.

Abstract
The neuroblastoma cell line SK-ER3, which is stably transfected with the estrogen receptor (ER), was used to study the effect of insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) on growth and morphological differentiation induced by estrogens. The data demonstrate that insulin and related growth factors control the growth and morphological differentiation of the cell line expressing the ER, but not of the parental cell line. Effects elicited by the growth factors in SK-ER3 cells can be blocked by ER antagonists. Transient transfection studies further confirm an effect of the IGFs in modulation of ER-activated promoters. The results presented support the hypothesis of the existence of cross-talk between membrane and intracellular receptors and provide evidence for physiological consequences of the activation of such a pathway of communication. The present study is of particular interest with regard to the theory of prenatal involvement of the ER in maturation of nerve cells. It could, in fact, be hypothesized that IGF-I and IGF-II, present in high concentrations in the developing brain, might activate the ER expressed in several embryonic brain nuclei.

Abstract
In order to assess the neuronal-like properties of a human neuroblastoma cell line obtained by stable transfection of the estrogen receptor (SK-ER3) a series of quantitative measurements of the activity of two neurotransmitter-related enzymes: tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and monamine oxidase (MAO), and of catecholamine concentrations were performed. When compared to the parental SK-N-BE cell line, the stably transfected SK-ER3 cells show a more pronounced dopaminergic phenotype. The immunoreactivity to a TH antibody is in fact increased and the ratio between dopamine and noradrenaline concentrations is elevated. Treatment with estradiol further enhances the expression of this phenotype. Interestingly, in the transfected cell line MAO-A activity is decreased and further reduced by estrogen treatment. This finding substantiated by previous reports indicates that our model system might represent an interesting tool for the study of the pharmacological treatments of estrogen-induced pathological responses of nervous cells.

Abstract
Several reports demonstrate estrogen receptor involvement in specific brain functions. In addition, estrogen receptors are expressed at early stages of brain development, suggesting that estrogens or related molecules may play an instructive role in the differentiation of specific brain areas. The lack of model systems in which these phenomena could be studied prompted us to develop a neuroblastoma cell line expressing the estrogen receptor. The cell line expresses the hormone receptor at levels compatible with a physiological activity. The activated estrogen receptor is capable of blocking proliferation of the cells without exerting toxic effects. Following growth arrest, the cells display a neuron-like morphology and express tau and synaptophysin, two proteins synthesized in differentiating neurons. The cell line generated will provide a valuable model system for molecular and biochemical studies of the activity of estrogens in neural-derived cells.

Abstract
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers linked to genes controlling Hessian fly resistance from Triticum tauschii (Coss.) Schmal. were identified for two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germ plasm lines KS89WGRC3 (C3) and KS89WGRC6 (C6). Forty-six clones with loci on chromosomes of homoeologous group 3 and 28 clones on those of group 6 were surveyed for polymorphisms. Eleven and 12 clones detected T. tauschii loci in the two lines, respectively. Analysis of F2 progenies indicated that the Hessian fly resistance gene H23 identified in C3 is linked to XksuH4 (6.9 cM) and XksuG48 (A) (15.6 cM), located on 6D. The resistance gene H24 in C6 is linked to XcnlBCD451 (5.9 cM), XcnlCD0482 (5.9 cM) and XksuG48 (B) (12.9 cM), located on 3DL.
