Mutual Coupling Reduction in Compact MIMO Antenna Operating on 28 GHz by Using Novel Decoupling Structure

This article presents an antenna with compact and simple geometry and a low profile. Roger RT6002, with a 10 mm × 10 mm dimension, is utilized to engineer this work, offering a wideband and high gain. The antenna structure contains a patch of circular-shaped stubs and a circular stub and slot. These insertions are performed to improve the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The antenna is investigated, and the results are analyzed in the commercially accessible electromagnetic (EM) software tool High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). Afterwards, a two-port multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is engineered by orthogonalizing the second element to the first element. The antenna offers good value for mutual coupling of less than -20 dB. The decoupling structure or parasitic patch is placed between two MIMO elements for more refined mutual coupling of the proposed MIMO antenna. The resultant antenna offers mutual coupling of less than -32 dB. Moreover, other MIMO parameters like envelop correlation coefficient (ECC), mean effective gain (MEG), diversity gain (DG), and channel capacity loss (CCL) are also studied to recommend antennas for future applications. The hardware model is fabricated and tested to validate the results, which resembles software-generated results. Moreover, the comparison of outcomes and other important parameters is performed using published work. The outcome of this proposed work is performed using already published work. The outcomes and comparison make the presented design the best option for future 5G devices.

Testbed as a RegUlatory Science Tool (TRUST): A Testbed Design for Evaluating 5G-Enabled Medical Devices

The fifth-generation (5G) cellular communication technology introduces technical advances that can expand medical device access to connectivity services. However, assessing the safety and effectiveness of emerging 5G-enabled medical devices is challenging as relevant evaluation methods have not yet been established. In this paper, we propose a design model for 5G testbed as a regulatory science tool (TRUST) for assessing 5G connectivity enablers of medical device functions. Specifically, we first identify application specific testing needs and general testing protocols. Next, we outline the selection and customization of key system components to create a 5G testbed. A TRUST demonstration is documented through a realistic 5G testbed implementation along with the deployment of a custom-built example use-case for 5G-enabled medical extended reality (MXR). Detailed configurations, example collected data, and implementation challenges are presented. The openness of the TRUST design model allows a TRUST testbed to be easily extended and customized to incorporate available resources and address the evaluation needs of different stakeholders.

An ICT Prototyping Framework for the "Port of the Future"

Seaports are genuine, intermodal hubs connecting seaways to inland transport links, such as roads and railways. Seaports are located at the focal point of institutional, industrial, and control activities in a jungle of interconnected information systems. System integration is setting considerable challenges when a group of independent providers are asked to implement complementary software functionalities. For this reason, seaports are the ideal playground where software is highly composite and tailored to a large variety of final users (from the so-called port communities). Although the target would be that of shaping the Port Authorities to be providers of (digital) innovation services, the state-of-the-art is still that of considering them as final users, or proxies of them. For this reason, we show how a canonical cloud, virtualizing a distributed architecture, can be structured to host different, possibly overlapped, tenants, slicing the information system at the infrastructure, platform, and software layers. Resources at the infrastructure and platform layers are shared so that a variety of independent applications can make use of the local calculus and access the data stored in a Data Lake. Such a cloud is adopted by the Port of Livorno as a rapid prototyping framework for the development and deployment of ICT innovation services. In order to demonstrate the versatility of this framework, three case studies relating to as many prototype ICT services (Navigation Safety, e-Freight, and Logistics) released within three industrial tenants are here presented and discussed.

5G Security Threat Assessment in Real Networks

Advances in mobile communication networks from 2G to 5G have brought unprecedented traffic growth, and 5G mobile communication networks are expected to be used in a variety of industries based on innovative technologies, fast not only in terms of extremely low latency but massive access devices. Various types of services, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communication (mMTC), and ultra-reliable and low latency communication (uRLLC), represent an increase in the number of attacks on users’ personal information, confidential information, and privacy information. Therefore, security assessments are essential to verify and cope with these various attacks. In this research, we (1) looked at 5G mobile communication network backgrounds and problems to investigate existing vulnerabilities and (2) assessed the current situation through evaluation of 5G security threats in real-world mobile networks in service.

RF Channel-Selectivity Sensing by a Small Antenna of Metamaterial Channel Filters for 5G Sub-6-GHz Bands

In this paper, a new small antenna is suggested for 5G Sub-6-GHz band mobile communication. It can change the channel among the three given bands (called the 3.5-GHz area), as a wide-band antenna is connected to a small multiplexer comprising three metamaterial channel filters. The function of channel selection of this antenna system is experimentally demonstrated to prove the validity of the presented scheme. The channel selection for 5G mobile communication is conducted from f₁ (channel 1) through f₂ (channel 2) to f₃ (channel 3), when TX and RX antennas with gains over 0 dBi and S₁₁ less than -10 dB are located far-field apart (R_Far ≫ 2.1 cm), and result in the transmission coefficient (S₂₁) being the greatest at the selected channel, which is detected by a vector network analyzer.

3D Radiation Pattern Reconfigurable Phased Array for Transmission Angle Sensing in 5G Mobile Communication

This paper proposes a 3D radiation pattern reconfigurable antenna (RPRA) and a reconfigurable phased array (RPA) for 5G mobile communication. The antenna and array are working at 28 GHz, which is selected as a 5G communication band in many countries. The proposed phased array will be applied as sensors to find out the optimal transmitting⁻receiving angle in a randomly changed cellular wireless scenarios. The RPRA and RPA are fed by Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) and have three switchable radiation modes: Broadside 1, Broadside 2 and Endfire. The three modes correspond to three different radiation patterns and each of them covers a different area in the Azimuth plane. An eight-element phased array constructed by the proposed RPRA, which is able to switch beam in Azimuth plane and scan in the Elevation plane, is also presented in this paper. The proposed RPA is able to provide much higher spatial coverage than the conventional phased arrays and without additional feeding and phase shifting networks. The beam switching is realized by the PIN diodes. The proposed antenna and array have planer structures and require small clearance on the ground plane which makes them compatible with mobile phones. The simulations show good performance for both RPRA and RPA.
