Reducing heat exposure from personal cooling strategies to green city construction in China's tropical city

With rapid industrialization and urbanization, the risk of summer heat exposure for urban dwellers has increased. The use of air conditioners (ACs) has become the most common personal cooling strategy, but further increasing fossil fuel consumption. As sustainable and affordable cooling strategies, urban parks can reduce heat exposure and substitute a part of air conditioners use. This study evaluates the heat exposure reduction from personal cooling to urban parks based on satellite images, questionnaire surveys, and network analysis in Liuzhou, one tropical city in China. We found that residents with lower income had a higher risk of heat exposure. Among the respondents, 85 % of residents chose to use ACs to alleviate high temperatures in summer, and 81.8 % among them were willing to access park cooling area (PCA) to cool off instead of using ACs. About one third parks could serve as potential alternatives (with temperatures <28 °C) to air conditioning, reducing carbon emissions by 175.93 tons per day during the hot summer and offsetting 2.5 % of urban fossil fuel carbon emissions. The design of parks should give more consideration to elder people and provide a good cooling platform for various social income groups. Future planning should also focus on accessibility to enable residents to fully utilize the parks. Building parks within 34.10 ha would provide a more efficient use of land. This research guides sustainable, high-quality growth in industrial cities and might contribute to promotion of low-carbon cities and social equity.

Enhanced in-situ biomethanation of food waste by sequential inoculum acclimation: Energy efficiency and carbon savings analysis

The increasing rate of food waste (FW) generation globally, makes it an attractive resource for renewable energy through anaerobic digestion (AD). The biogas recovered from AD can be upgraded by the methanation of internally produced carbon dioxide, CO₂ with externally sourced hydrogen gas, H₂ (biomethanation). In this work, H₂ was added to AD reactors processing FW in three successive phases, with digestate from preceding phases recycled in succession with the addition of fresh inoculum to enhance acclimation. The concentration of H₂ was increased for succeeding phases: 5%, 10% and 15% of the reactor headspace in Phase 1 (EH1), Phase 2 (EH2) and Phase 3 (EH3), respectively. The H₂ utilisation rate and biomethane yields increased as acclimation progressed from EH1 through EH3. Biomethane yield from the controls: EH1_Control, EH2_Control and EH3_Control were 417.6, 435.4 and 453.3 NmL-CH₄/gVS_added accounting for 64.8, 73.9 and 77.8% of the biogas respectively. And the biomethane yield from the test reactors EH1_Test, EH2_Test and EH3_Test were 468.3, 483.6, and 499.0 NmL-CH₄/gVS_added, accounting for 77.2, 78.1 and 81.0% of the biogas respectively. A progressive in-situ biomethanation could lead to biomethane production that meets higher fuel standards for gas-to-grid (GtG) injections and vehicle fuel - i.e. >95% CH₄. This would increase the energy yield and carbon savings compared to conventional biogas upgrade methods. For example, biogas upgrade for GtG by in-situ biomethanation could yield 7.3 MWh/t_FW energy and 1343 kg-CO₂e carbon savings, which is better than physicochemical upgrade options (i.e., 4.6-4.8 MWh/t_FW energy yield and 846-883 kg-CO₂e carbon savings).

Life cycle assessment and net present worth analysis of a community-based food waste treatment system

Food waste management has been a global challenge with significant economic and environmental impacts. A community-based food waste treatment scheme for Glasgow, UK is proposed. The food waste was treated by small-scale wet, mesophilic anaerobic digestion. Biogas was combusted in a combined heat and power plant to generate heat and electricity for each community. 201.39 kWh of electricity and 246.09 kWh of thermal energy could be provided to local communities per tonne of food waste treated. A total of 52,762 tonnes of food waste were produced each year in the city. Net-present worth analysis was employed to evaluate the scheme's economic feasibility. The scheme's environmental impacts were evaluated using life cycle assessment. The entire system saved 92.27 kg CO2-eq. per tonne of food waste treated and had a net-present worth of £ 3.187 million with a carbon tax of 50 £ tonne-1 and a biogas yield of 190 m3 tonne-1.
