Caregivers' experiences of caring for non-COVID-19 patients during the pandemic: A qualitative systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To investigate caregivers' experiences of caring for non-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients to determine their challenges and needs.

METHODS

Five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, CINAHL, and ClinicalKey) were searched from January 2020 to June 2022. Two authors independently reviewed all studies for eligibility and extracted information on the study aim, sample characteristics, study design, data collection, analysis methods, and so on.

RESULTS

Finally, 13 studies were included. Four themes were determined: impacts on physical and psychosocial well-being of caregivers, perceived risk of the virus, negative impacts on employment and financial statuses, and changes in support networks.

CONCLUSION

This is the first qualitative systematic review to describe caregivers' experiences of caring for non-COVID-19 patients during the pandemic. The four themes should be focused on to ease caregivers' physical, psychological, and financial burdens; to provide them with better assistance in terms of formal and informal supports to cope with the epidemic more effectively; and to ensure that their loved ones are much healthier.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The findings can be used by healthcare policymakers, social policymakers, and governments to better support caregivers of non-COVID-19 patients. Additionally, it provides suggestions for related medical institutions to pay more attention to caregivers' experiences.

Caring experiences of family caregivers of patients with pancreatic cancer: an integrative literature review

PURPOSE

This review summarizes and synthesizes the available empirical literature on the experiences concerned with the problems and challenges faced by caregivers of patients with pancreatic cancer.

METHODS

An integrative review method was used, and a literature search was conducted using five databases. We searched the terms "pancreatic cancer," "caregiver," and "experience," and used the Boolean operators OR and AND to combine them. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools were used to assess the quality of the included studies.

RESULTS

Four qualitative studies, one mixed method, and three quantitative studies met the selection criteria and were included in the review. Informal family caregivers of patients with pancreatic cancer experienced multifaceted roles, lack of information, difficulties in maintaining emotional well-being, and positive coping. The factors associated with their caring experience included the caregivers' demographics, patients' psychological status, and clinical characteristics.

CONCLUSION

Caregivers of patients with pancreatic cancer have various experiences while providing care. Health care providers should offer opportunities for caregivers to recognize their feelings, provide sufficient information and psychological support, and foster coping strategies to maintain the physical and psychosocial well-being of caregivers.

Mothers caring experiences of children with congenital hand or foot abnormalities: A phenomenological study

PURPOSE

To explore the mothers' caring experiences of children with congenital hand or foot abnormalities, and to inform the development of tailored intervention strategies to improve the mothers' well-being.

DESIGN AND METHODS

A qualitative study design was used. A purposive sample of 23 women whose children had congenital abnormalities of the hand or foot were enrolled. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted from December 2019 to May 2020. The Colaizzi's phenomenological approach was used for data analysis.

RESULTS

Data analysis revealed four main themes: (a) dynamic negative affect; (b) low health literacy; (c) mothers' need for support; and (d) the shift in social activity and family role. Eleven subthemes were involved in these themes.

CONCLUSIONS

Women whose children have abnormal hands or feet have complicated care experiences and are under tremendous psychological pressure. Some mothers also encounter financial difficulties.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

This study assessed the psychological impact on mothers of children with congenital hand or foot abnormalities. Our findings illustrate the needs of mothers, and call attention to this specific group. The findings may help inform healthcare and social interventions to facilitate the recovery of the affected children and cater to the needs of these families. Healthcare providers should provide adequate instructions to the parents regarding the provision of home management care following discharge from the hospital.

[Systematic review of the qualitative researches on care experience of caregivers of burn children]

Objective: To systematically review the care experience of caregivers of burn children, so as to provide references for guiding the continuing care in hospitals, communities, and homes. Methods: Databases including Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Web of Science, and CINAHL were retrieved with the search terms of " burn" , " care/caregivers/nursing/father/mother/relatives" , " needs/perceptions/exceptions/attitudes/feelings/demands/experiences" , " qualitative research" , and the Chinese Journals Full-text Database, China Biology Medicine disc, VIP Database, and Wanfang Data were retrieved with the search terms in Chinese version of "//" , "//////" , "/////" , "" to search the qualitative researches on care experience of caregivers of burn children published from the establishment of the databases to November 2019. After screening and extracting the data, the quality evaluation criteria for qualitative research of the Australian Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence-Based Health Care Center and its integrative/aggregative synthesis method were used to assess the quality of the included literature and meta-integrate the research results respectively. Results: A total of 16 studies and 269 caregivers were enrolled. The quality of one included literature was grade A, and the quality of 15 included literature was grade B. A total of 65 research results were extracted with totally 6 categories formed after summarization, and 2 integrated results obtained as follows: (1) The caregivers experienced heavy psychological pressure and burden in the care process, which had a significant impact on family, social relations, and daily life. (2) With the care time lapsing, through the support of all sectors of society and self-adjustment, the caregivers gradually accepted the reality and actively took various countermeasures, but they still faced many challenges in disease care. Conclusions: The caregivers of burn children have many physical and mental health problems and face many care challenges. The government, medical and health institutions, and society should give a great attention to these issues, improve the social support system and security system, reduce the family-related pressure of burn children's families, and improve the quality of family life.

Just Like Any Other Family? Everyday Life Experiences of Mothers of Adults with Severe Mental Illness in Sweden

This study explores experiences of mothers in Sweden who care for their adult children suffering from severe mental illness. Using 15 interviews with mothers from 40 to 80 years old, the article examines how predominant professional knowledge and sanism constructs the mothers and their children as deviant and what counterstrategies the mothers develop as a response to these experiences of discrimination. The findings show that the mothers' experiences are characterized by endless confrontations with negative attitudes and comments that have forced them to go through painful and prolonged processes of self-accusations for not having given enough love, care, support and help in different stages of their children's life. But the mothers' experiences also reveal important aspects of changes over the life span. As the mothers are ageing, the relationship between them and their children becomes more reciprocal and the ill child may even take the role as family carer.
