Auxiliary Utensils in Cosmetic and Medical Tattoo Settings

Cosmetic and medical tattooing is miniaturized tattooing of high precision and thus requires many dedicated utensils including advanced devices for marking and anatomical delineation. Symmetry is a special demand, as is aesthetic outcome, building on perfectionated detail. The artist shall master design and strategy along with advanced technical performance helped by having and using the right tools. This article reviews and illustrates the many special utensils involved in good-practice cosmetic and medical tattooing, exemplified by selected tools used for cleansing, disinfection, pre-operative measurement and marking, and special tattoo machines, cartridges, microblades and needles. Personal protective equipment used to prevent infections among technicians and customers are also illustrated. Educational tools, such as face phantoms and eyebrow mats, are displayed. Mastering cosmetic and medical tattooing is a challenge and involves mastering the many auxiliaries along with needle configurations, machines, inks and the whole setting of the activity. This review is an illustrated practical record and a guideline to good professional practice.

Time since last discharge of firearms and spent ammunition elements: state of the art and perspectives

The estimation of the time since last discharge of firearms or spent ammunition elements (e.g., casings) may provide crucial information in the investigation of a shooting incident and, eventually, the following trial. Herein, an exhaustive review of the methods described in the literature is reported, with the aim to evaluate their potential and limitations from a forensic perspective. This work, in particular, highlighted the fact that a number of investigations have been carried out in the field during the last century (with an especially high rate in the last 30 years), but the implementation of related procedures in forensic laboratories is still rare. The situation has been discussed and a series of propositions have been forwarded, in order to overcome challenges and facilitate the implementation of dating approaches in real casework.

Cytokine removal in human septic shock: Where are we and where are we going?

Although improving, the mortality from septic shock still remains high despite increased international awareness. As a consequence, much effort has focused on alternative treatment strategies in an effort to improve outcomes. The application of blood purification therapies to improve immune homeostasis has been suggested as one such method, but these approaches, such as high-volume continuous haemofiltration or cytokine and/or endotoxin removal, have enjoyed little success to date. More recently, the use of sorbent technologies has attracted much attention. These adsorbers are highly effective at removing inflammatory mediators, in particular, cytokines, from the bloodstream. This narrative review is the executive summary of meetings held throughout the 6th International Fluid Academy Days in Antwerp, Belgium (Nov 23-25, 2017), focusing on the current understanding regarding the use of such adsorbers in humans with septic shock. We followed a modified Delphi approach involving a combination of evidence appraisal together with expert opinion in order to achieve recommendations for practice and, importantly, future research.
