Effects of combustion temperature on the optical properties of brown carbon from biomass burning

Biomass burning has been known as one of main sources of Brown Carbon (BrC) in atmosphere. In this study, by controlling the combustion temperature at 250°C, 350°C, and 450°C, the methanol soluble organic carbon (MSOC) and methanol insoluble carbon (MISC) from pine wood burning was collected by impinger. UV-Vis, excitation emission matrix (EEM), TEM and FTIR spectra were applied to investigate the properties of BrC collected. For MSOC at 250°C and 350°C, all the spectral profiles of UV-Vis absorption and excitation emission matrix are almost the same, while the EEM of MSOC at 450°C are different from that of the other two. For MISC fluorescence was observed only in the case of 450°C. In the FTIR spectra, with the temperature increasing the peaks associated to the oxygen-contained functions was weakened, indicating the formation of the fluorophores with larger conjugated system, especially aromatic hydrocarbons. Our results show that biomass combustion at low temperature produces more oxygen-riched BrC, which possesses relatively lower light absorption, while at high temperature produces more aromatics hydrocarbons with relatively strong light absorption. The results of this work are helpful to trace the source of brown carbon and optimize biomass energy utilization.

In-situ measurement of temperature and alkali metal concentration in municipal solid waste incinerators using flame emission spectroscopy

In order to address slagging, fouling and high-temperature corrosion problems caused by alkali metals in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), in-situ measurement of alkali metal in MSW incinerators is needed. The paper presents experimental measurements of temperatures and alkali metal concentrations in two MSW incinerators based on Flame Emission Spectroscopy (FES). Through the analysis of spontaneous emission spectra and a calibration procedure, the concentration of gas phase sodium (Na) and potassium (K), temperature and thermal radiation in the incinerator were in-situ measured by a portable spectral system simultaneously. Experimental results showed MSW composition has significant effect on the measured gaseous Na and K. Higher volatile content in MSW may enhance the alkali metal emission. Besides that, the released gaseous Na and K in the two incinerators are correlated with temperature in incinerators. The study provided a low cost and effective solution for in-situ measurement of temperature and alkali metal concentration in MSW incinerators.

Co-combustion of coal processing waste, oil refining waste and municipal solid waste: Mechanism, characteristics, emissions

This experimental research studies co-combustion of wet coal processing waste (filter cakes) with typical municipal solid waste (wood, rubber, plastic, cardboard) and used turbine oil, as combustible components of composite liquid fuel. Ignition mechanisms and characteristics of single droplets of three fuel composition groups have been investigated in a motionless heated air with using a high-speed video recording system. Analyzing video frames, a physical model of the process under study was developed. The values of the guaranteed ignition delay times have been determined for three fuel groups with different compositions at the ambient temperature 600-1,000 °C. The minimum values of ignition delay times are about 3 s, the maximum ones are about 25 s. In addition to the established difference in the ignition delay times, the various fuel compositions also differ in combustion temperatures. Maximum values reaching 1,300 °C for compositions with 10% of used oil. It has also been determined that fuels with municipal solid waste are notable for lower nitrogen and sulfur oxide concentrations in flue gases as compared to filter cakes in initial state. Adding used oil to such fuel compositions increases the anthropogenic emissions but these worsening environmental characteristics do not exceed the regulated allowable limits of pollutants for solid fossil fuel combustion by thermal power plants. The obtained results are the backbone for the development of an environmentally friendly, cost- and energy-efficient co-combustion technology for municipal solid waste recovery by burning it as part of composite fuels, e.g., in boiler furnaces instead of coal.

Characteristics of Speciated Mercury Emissions from Coal Combustion in Air and Oxygen-Enriched Environment

Coal combustion is a dominant source of Hg in atmosphere and is believed to be responsible for increases of atmospheric Hg since industrial revolution. In this study, we compared characteristics of different Hg species emitted from combustion of different types of coal in air and oxygen-enriched environment. Total Hg emissions from coal combustion increased significantly with increase of combustion temperature and the majority of emitted Hg existed in the form of Hg⁰. Total Hg emissions were 8.61 (5.38-16.48) ng/g (average and range) at 500 °C, while increased to 18.65 (6.49-40.38) ng/g at 900 °C. After burning at high temperatures, the higher percentage of reactive Hg species was observed in the flue gases, which was probably caused by promotion of Hg⁰ oxidation due to the higher flue gas temperature. Compared with air environment, more Hg (3.00-17.96 ng/g higher than air at 900 °C) was remained in ashes, and the percentage of reactive Hg in flue gases increased by 193%-826% at 900 °C under O₂/CO₂, which is beneficial for reduction of Hg emissions from coal combustion.
