Experimental study on the microwave radiation disinfection of E. coli on SiC composite filter

Filter is an important component in the air-conditioning system. The airborne microorganisms can be intercepted and further multiply on the filter, which might cause a secondary pollution. The present work proposed a SiC composite filter (SCF), namely combining the filter with the absorbing material SiC. The disinfection efficiency (η) and mechanism of the microwave radiation method (MRM) on E. coli and S. aureus attached to the SCF were experimentally explored. The impacts of the microwave power (P) and disinfection time (t) on η were investigated. The results show that the SCF can be heated well by the microwave, but the normal filter (NF) cannot. The MRM can effectively and rapidly disinfect bacteria on the SCF at a sufficiently high P and an appropriate t. Generally, η increases with P and t. Under a specific P, η can be only increased with t at a certain range and a peak η might be reached. When this peak is achieved, η will not be further increased with t. The disinfection by the MRM is attributed to the thermal and non-thermal effects. Specially, at P = 600 W and t = 10 min, the non-thermal effect contributes about 89.6% to the disinfection of the E. coli and about 43.1% to the S. aureus. A universal relationship between η and temperature is given for E. coli and S. aureus to predict η at various P and t. Finally, the effective temperatures required by the MRM to satisfactorily disinfect bacteria on the SCF are identified, i.e., about 41 °C for E. coli and 71 °C for S. aureus.

Appropriate oxygen vacancies and Mo-N bond synergistically modulate charge transfer dynamics of MoO3-x/S-CN for superior photocatalytic disinfection: Unveiling synergistic effects and disinfection mechanism

Highly efficient charge transfer is a critical factor to modulate the photocatalytic activity. However, the conscious modulation of charge transfer efficiency is still a great challenge. Herein, a novel interfacial Mo-N bond and appropriate oxygen vacancies (OVs) modulated S-scheme MoO_3-x/S-CN heterojunction was rationally fabricated for efficient photocatalytic disinfection. The results of characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the enhanced charge transfer dynamics is ascribed to the optimizing oxygen vacancies density and forming interfacial Mo-N bond. It can improve charge transfer efficiency from 36.4% (MoO_3-x) to 52.5% (MoO_3-x/S-CN) and produce more reactive oxygen species (ROS), achieving entirely inactivate of 7.60-log E. coli and S. aureus within 50 min and 75 min. Besides, MoO_3-x/S-CN can well resist the disturbance from the coexisting substances, and can be applied in a wide pH range, and even authentic water bodies. Monitoring of bacterial antioxidant systems and membrane integrity revealed that bacterial inactivation begins with the oxidation of cell membrane and dies from leakage of intracellular substances and destruction of cell structure. This work provides an inspiration on consciously modulating S-scheme charge transfer efficiency by optimizing oxygen vacancies density and atomic-level interface control for promoting the photocatalytic antibacterial activity.

Intensified inactivation of model and environmental bacteria by an atmospheric-pressure air-liquid discharge plasma compared with chlorination

Water-borne pathogenic bacteria are always the top priority to be removed through disinfection process in water treatment due to their threat to human health. It was necessary to develop novel disinfection methods since the conventional chlorine disinfection was inefficient in inactivating chlorine-resistant bacteria, inducing the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) bacteria and forming disinfection by-products (DBPs). In this study, the inactivation of four model strains including Gram-negative (G^-), Gram-positive (G⁺) and environmental samples by atmospheric-pressure air-liquid discharge plasma (ALDP) was assessed systematically. The results showed that ALDP was superior in inactivating all of the samples compared with chlorination. During 10 min ALDP treatment, the G^- bacteria were completely inactivated, and the G⁺ one was inactivated by more than 4.61 logs. The inactivation of bacteria from a campus lake and a wastewater treatment plant effluent exceeded 99.82% and 97.78%, respectively. For G^- bacteria, ALDP resulted in a much lower (10²∼10³ times) levels of VBNC cells than chlorination. ALDP could effectively remove the chlorine-resistant bacteria. More than 96.41% of the intracellular DNA and 99.99% of the extracellular DNA were removed, whereas it was only 56.35% and 12.82% for chlorination. ALDP had a stronger ability to destroy cell structure than chlorination, presumably due to the existence of ROS (·OH, ¹O₂ and O₂^-). GC-MS analysis showed that ALDP produced less DBPs than chlorination. These findings provided new insights for the application of discharge plasma in water disinfection, which could be complemental or alternative to the conventional disinfection methods.

Disinfection characteristics of an advanced rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactor in pilot scale

Hydrodynamic cavitation is a promising technique for water disinfection. In the present paper, the disinfection characteristics of an advanced hydrodynamic cavitation reactor (ARHCR) in pilot scale were studied. The effects of various flow rates (1.4-2.6 m³/h) and rotational speeds (2600-4200 rpm) on the removal of Escherichia coli (E. coli) were revealed and analyzed. The variation regularities of the log reduction and reaction rate constant at various cavitation numbers were established. A disinfection rate of 100% was achieved in only 4 min for 15 L of simulated effluent under 4200 rpm and 1.4 m³/h, with energy efficiency at 0.0499 kWh/L. A comprehensive comparison with previously introduced HCRs demonstrates the superior performance of the presented ARHCR system. The morphological changes in E. coli were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the ARHCR can lead to serious cleavage and surface damages to E. coli, which cannot be obtained by conventional HCRs. Finally, a possible damage mechanism of the ARHCR, including both the hydrodynamical and sonochemical effects, was proposed. The findings of the present study can provide strong support to the fundamental understanding and applications of ARHCRs for water disinfection.

Superior disinfection effect of Escherichia coli by hydrothermal synthesized TiO2-based composite photocatalyst under LED irradiation: Influence of environmental factors and disinfection mechanism

The photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) under light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiation was performed with P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ photocatalyst to investigate the photocatalytic bactericidal activity. Our work showed that this composite photocatalyst possessed remarkable bacterial disinfection ability and could completely inactivate 10⁸ cfu/mL of E. coli within just 40 min under the optimum catalyst loading of 0.5 g/L. The effects of different environmental factors, including light wavelength, light intensity, temperature, solution pH and inorganic ions, on the inactivation efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that bacteria inactivation by P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ was more favorable with blue colored LED irradiation, light intensity at 750 W/m², temperature in the range of 30-37 °C and pH values at natural or slightly alkaline condition. The existence of different inorganic ions under normal environmental level had no significant impact on the bactericidal performance. In addition, during the inactivation process, the morphology changes of E. coli cells were directly observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and further proved by the measurement of K⁺ leakage from the inactivated E. coli. The results demonstrated that the photocatalytic inactivation caused drastic damage on bacterial cells membrane. Furthermore, the mechanisms of photocatalytic bacterial inactivation were also systemically studied and the results confirmed that the excellent disinfection activity of P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ resulted from the major reactive species: h⁺ and ·O₂^- from photocatalytic process instead of the leakage of Ag⁺ (≤0.085 ± 0.005 mg/L) from photocatalyst. These results indicate that P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ photocatalyst has promising potential for real water sterilization application.

Critical evaluation of mechanism responsible for biomass abatement during electrochemical coagulation (EC) process: A critical review

This is a first review paper that delineates fundamental disinfection mechanism undergoes during the simple electrochemical coagulation (EC) process. The elucidation of detailed mechanistic phenomenon of EC process involved would help to enhance the disinfection efficiency. In this context, the biomass (bacteria, virus and algae) abatement mechanism by EC is critically reviewed and rationalized based on the experimental demonstration performed from the recent decade. Whereas, the effect of most significant abiotic operating parameters, dissolved contents and bacteria cell wall composition on biomass reduction are explored in detail. From these analyses, physical removal and chemical inactivation routes are identified for bacteria abatement mechanism during the EC process using sacrificial electrodes. Which includes (i) enmeshment of microbial contaminants by EC flocs, (ii) sweeping flocculation is preferentially for destabilization of negatively charged biomass, and (iii) inactivation/attenuation of micro-organism cell walls by electrochemically induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) or direct interaction of electric field. Perhaps, the overall abatement mechanism attributes due to the aforementioned phenomenon endures independently and/or synergistically during the EC process. Nonetheless, to obtain better understanding of virus and algae abatement mechanism, we require more experimental investigation on algae and virus removal. Eventually, more intensive research efforts on biomass attenuation by EC are most important to reinforce this claim.

Advances in photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria: Development of photocatalysts and mechanisms

Photocatalysis has attracted worldwide attention due to its potential in solar energy conversion. As a "green" advanced oxidation technology, it has been extensively used for water disinfection and wastewater treatment. This article provides a review of the recent progress in solar energy-induced photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria, focusing on the development of highly efficient photocatalysts and their underlying mechanisms in bacterial inactivation. The photocatalysts are classified into TiO2-based and non-TiO2-based systems, as TiO2 is the most investigated photocatalyst. The synthesis methods, modification strategies, bacterial disinfection activities and mechanisms of different types of photocatalysts are reviewed in detail. Emphasis is given to the modified TiO2, including noble metal deposition, non-metal doping, dye sensitization and composite TiO2, along with typical non-TiO2-based photocatalysts for bacterial disinfection, including metal oxides, sulfides, bismuth metallates, graphene-based photocatalysts, carbon nitride-based photocatalysts and natural photocatalysts. A simple and versatile methodology by using a partition system combined with scavenging study is introduced to study the photocatalytic disinfection mechanisms in different photocatalytic systems. This review summarizes the current state of the work on photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria, and is expected to offer useful insights for the future development in the field.
