Vulvar ulcerative cutaneous tuberculosis secondary to genital tract tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease that gradually poses a certain threat to public health and economic growth. Tuberculosis typically affects the lungs, pleura, and lymph nodes and rarely the skin. Cutaneous tuberculosis manifesting as ulcerated lesions is also rare and often misdiagnosed and missed by clinicians. Here, the authors report a 29-year-old female patient presenting a vulvar ulcer for 10 months, accompanied by irregular menstruation and increased vaginal secretions. After a skin biopsy and endometrial PCR testing, it was finally diagnosed as vulvar ulcerative cutaneous tuberculosis secondary to genital tuberculosis. Anti-tuberculosis treatment was effective. Cutaneous tuberculosis is called a great imitator. In order to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis by clinicians, the authors systematically reviewed this disease as well.

Female Genital Tuberculosis: Five Case Reports

Female genital tuberculosis (FG-TB) is an important disease leading to substantial morbidity including infertility and abnormal vaginal bleeding. While the incidence of FG-TB is < 1% in a developed area, its incidence is >1% in developing countries. Due to its subtle presentation, many cases are overlooked and diagnosed incidentally. Accordingly, the actual incidence of FG-TB is unknown. The definitive diagnosis of the disease is based on histopathological or microbiological examination but in most cases, the bacteriological test is overlooked. In addition, there is no specific laboratory or imaging evaluation to distinguish FG-TB from others. The first step in the diagnosis of FG-TB is suspicion of the disease. In the case of infertility, FG-TB should be included in the differential diagnosis in developing countries after excluding other common diseases and tissue biopsy should be sent for not only histopathology but also microbiological investigations.

"Silent" post-menopausal genital tuberculosis with lethal outcome

Female genital Tuberculosis (TB) is a rare disease, that usually affects female patients of reproductive age living in developing countries. The diagnosis of the disease is quite difficult since there is no consensus on the appropriate screening and management needed. Female genital TB can mimic many other pathologies including advanced ovarian cancer. Laboratory findings or blood serum tests usually are not suggestive of the disease. Imaging findings can be misleading. The incidence of the disease in Greece is rare. We present a rare case report of a post-menopausal patient with female genital TB, mimicking malignancy and resulting to a lethal outcome. Laboratory and imaging findings were non-specific for the disease, leading to a false diagnosis of disseminated peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Health Consequences of the Female Genital Mutilation: A Systematic Review

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a general health concern. The World Health Organization has recognized it as a condition that endangers women's health. This review study aimed to identify the types of health outcomes of FGM. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to create a critical view of the current evidence on the effect of Female genital on girls and women's health. In this study, we focused on the health risks of female Female genital. Academic databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, SID, IranMedex, Irandoc, and Magiran were searched with regard to the health consequences of FGM from January 1990 until 2018. Eleven review studies met the criteria and contained 288 relevant studies on the risks of FGM. It was suggested that FGM had various physical, obstetric, sexual, and psychological consequences. Women with FGM experienced mental disturbances (e.g., psychiatric diagnoses, anxiety, somatization, phobia, and low self-esteem) than other women. Our study can provide evidence on improving, changing behaviors, and making decisions on the quality of services offered to women suffering from FGM.

Hysterosalpingographic findings in women with genital tuberculosis

BACKGROUND

Genital tuberculosis (TB) is an important cause of infertility in the developing countries, where hysterosalpingography (HSG) remains an initial diagnostic procedure in the evaluation of tubal and peritoneal factors leading to infertility.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine the HSG findings of genital TB in infertile women.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We retrospectively reviewed HSG findings in 20 women with genital tuberculosis. HSG was performed in these women as part of infertility work up over 5 years. The other diagnostic procedures used included endometrial curettage and biopsy, histological examination, culture, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and polymerase chain reaction.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 30.5±8 years. All women had clinical history of infertility for at least 4 years. Women presented with pelvic abdominal pain (30-35%) and menstrual disturbances (20-25%). Reviewing 20 cases of female genital TB were encountered various presentations on HSG.

CONCLUSION

HSG is an invaluable procedure in suggesting the diagnosis of genital TB in patients being investigated for infertility.
