Abstract
The incidence of bovine endometritis, which has a negative impact on the reproduction of dairy cows, has been recently increasing. In this study, the differential markers and metabolites of healthy cows and cows with endometritis were analyzed by measuring blood biochemical indicators and immune factors using biochemical and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits combined with nontargeted metabolomics. The LC-QTOF platform was used to evaluate the serum metabolomics of healthy cows and cows with endometritis after 21-27 days of calving. The results showed that glucose, free fatty acid, calcium, sodium, albumin, and alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly lower in the serum of cows with endometritis than in healthy cows (P < 0.05). However, the serum potassium, interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor levels were significantly higher in cows with endometritis (P < 0.05). In addition, the serum metabolome data analysis of the two groups showed that the expression of 468 metabolites was significantly different (P < 0.05), of which 291 were upregulated and 177 were downregulated. These metabolites were involved in 78 metabolic pathways, including amino acid, nucleotide, carbohydrate, lipid, and vitamin metabolism pathways; signal transduction pathways, and other biological pathways. Taken together, negative energy balance and immune activation, which are related to local abnormalities in amino acid, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism, were the important causes of endometritis in dairy cows. Metabolites such as glucose, carnosine, dehydroascorbic acid, L-malic acid, tetrahydrofolic acid, and UDP-glucose may be used as key indicators in the hematological diagnosis and treatment of endometritis in dairy cows.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current gold standard for chronic endometritis (CE) diagnosis is immunohistochemistry (IHC) for CD-138. However, IHC for CD-138 is not exempt from diagnostic limitations. The aim of our study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of MUM-1 IHC, as compared with CD-138. METHODS This is a multi-centre, retrospective, observational study, which included three tertiary hysteroscopic centres in university teaching hospitals. One hundred ninety-three consecutive women of reproductive age were referred to our hysteroscopy services due to infertility, recurrent miscarriage, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial polyps or myomas. All women underwent hysteroscopy plus endometrial biopsy. Endometrial samples were analysed through histology, CD138 and MUM-1 IHC. The primary outcome was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of MUM-1 IHC for CE, as compared with CD-138 IHC. RESULTS Sensitivity and specificity of CD-138 and MUM-1 IHC were respectively 89.13%, 79.59% versus 93.48% and 85.03%. The overall diagnostic accuracy of MUM-1 and CD-138 IHC were similar (AUC = 0.893 vs AUC = 0.844). The intercorrelation coefficient for single measurements was high between the two techniques (ICC = 0.831, 0.761-0.881 95%CI). However, among CE positive women, MUM-1 allowed the identification of higher number of plasma cells/hpf than CD-138 (6.50 [SD 4.80] vs 5.05 [SD 3.37]; p = 0.017). Additionally, MUM-1 showed a higher inter-observer agreement as compared to CD-138. CONCLUSION IHC for MUM-1 and CD-138 showed a similar accuracy for detecting endometrial stromal plasma cells. Notably, MUM-1 showed higher reliability in the paired comparison of the individual samples than CD-138. Thus, MUM-1 may represent a novel, promising add-on technique for the diagnosis of CE.

Abstract
Endometritis is characterized by inflammation of the endometrial lining that leads to reduced reproductive potential. Restoring the impaired hormonal balance is an important component of endometritis treatment. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of resveratrol on estrogen and progesterone hormone status in endometritis. Mature female Sprague Dawley rats were used, and endometritis was induced by intrauterine infusion of Escherichia coli. Animals were treated with resveratrol alone or combined with marbofloxacin. Compared to the non-treated endometritis group, resveratrol treatment reduced serum oestradiol levels, increased serum progesterone levels, enhanced estrogen receptor (ER) expression in the uterine stroma, decreased ESR1 gene expression, and raised ESR2 gene expression. Resveratrol administration combined with marbofloxacin also increased ER expression in the uterine gland and progesterone receptor expression in the uterine epithelium. The findings of this study suggest that the actions of resveratrol on progesterone levels and estrogen receptor expression might be responsible for its beneficial effect in rats with endometritis.

Abstract
Metritis in dairy cows is classified as a puerperal disease that affects all layers of the uterine epithelium and occurs during the first 21 days after parturition. The objectives of this study were to identify potential predictive biomarkers of metritis, to monitor the biochemical profile of pre-metritic dairy cows, and to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy cows with metritis. Fifty-five cows without metritis and fifteen cows that showed clinical signs of metritis were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected at -21, -14 and - 7 days before calving and at parturition and assayed for urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), total cholesterol, fibrinogen, total calcium, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentrations. Serum fibrinogen on 21, 14 and 7 days prepartum and at parturition was the strongest discriminator between metritic and control cows. Moreover, metritic cows had lower (P < 0.05) concentrations of urea, creatinine, cholesterol and calcium and higher (P < 0.05) serum AST, GGT activities, and serum fibrinogen, BHB and NEFA concentrations when compared to control cows. The number of days to first ovulation, insemination, services per pregnancy and days to pregnancy were greater (P < 0.05) for metritic cows than the control group, and the follicle size was smaller (P < 0.05) for metritic cows than the control group. Our results indicate alterations in the biochemical profile of dairy cows with metritis and the negative impact on the reproductive performance of metritic cows raised in tropical conditions. In addition, this study showed that the serum fibrinogen could be used as screening biomarkers to indicate cows that might have metritis during the postpartum period.

Abstract
Female genital Tuberculosis (TB) is a rare disease, that usually affects female patients of reproductive age living in developing countries. The diagnosis of the disease is quite difficult since there is no consensus on the appropriate screening and management needed. Female genital TB can mimic many other pathologies including advanced ovarian cancer. Laboratory findings or blood serum tests usually are not suggestive of the disease. Imaging findings can be misleading. The incidence of the disease in Greece is rare. We present a rare case report of a post-menopausal patient with female genital TB, mimicking malignancy and resulting to a lethal outcome. Laboratory and imaging findings were non-specific for the disease, leading to a false diagnosis of disseminated peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Abstract
The objective was to determine associations between response to superovulation and body condition, subclinical endometritis and circulating metabolic biomarkers [adiponectin, leptin, insulin, IGF1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α, interleukin (IL) 1β, IL6, and urea] in lactating dairy cows. Ten multiparous lactating Holstein cows in each body condition score (1-5; 1 emaciated; 5 obese) category (BCSC) 2.00 to < 2.50 (BCSC1), 2.50 to < 3.00 (BCSC2), 3.00 to <3.50 (BCSC3), 3.50 to <4.00 (BCSC4) and 4.00 to 5.00 (BCSC5) groups (total n = 50) were randomly selected and superovulated, timed artificially inseminated with frozen-thawed semen from three sires and embryos collected (n = 50 collections). At embryo collection, blood samples and embryo recovery fluid were collected for determination of metabolic markers and presence of subclinical endometritis (lavage technique; > 6% PMN). In total, 379 embryos were collected (average of 7.6 embryos per superovulation). Mean numbers of total ova and embryos was greater for cows in BCSC2, BCSC3 and BCSC4 groups compared with cows in BCSC1 and BCSC5 groups (P < 0.01). Total number of transferrable embryos were greater for cows in BCSC 2 and BCSC3 groups compared with cows in BCSC1, BCSC4 and BCSC5 groups (P < 0.01). Mean number of total ova and embryos and of transferrable embryos was higher for cows with 0 or 1-6% PMN compared to cows with >6% PMN (P < 0.01). In addition, there was a quadratic association between blood urea nitrogen concentrations and % transferrable embryos (r2 = 0.85; P < 0.05) and between BCS and % transferrable embryos (r2 = 0.73; P < 0.05). Circulating adiponectin, leptin, insulin, IGF1 and TNFα were greater in cows with moderate to good body condition compared to thin or obese cows (P < 0.05). Circulating adiponectin, leptin, IGF1 and insulin were greater in normal cows (≤6% PMNs), whereas, TNFα and IL1β and IL6 were greater in cows with subclinical endometritis (P < 0.05). In conclusion, BCS and subclinical endometrial inflammation were associated with superovulatory response and embryo quality. Further, circulating metabolic biomarkers were associated with superovulatory response and embryo quality, likely due to donor's metabolic status and uterine environment. Optimizing superovulatory responses and embryo quality in lactating dairy cows requires management of nutrition and uterine health.

Abstract
The analysis was made of the content of proteins in inflammation acute phase in 100 healthy puerperants and 157 women with endometritis after cesarean section. The established disproportion in protein concentration during acute phase in healthy puerperants is considered as a female organism adaptive reaction to pregnancy and delivery. As for patients with endometritis, this condition testifies the compensatory resources stress, development of pathophysiological reactions of organism and intensity of local damages. The concentration of C-reactive protein and prealbumin in patients with endometritis provides an opportunity to forecast the degree of severity of course of disease.

Abstract
Endometritis is an inflammation of the endometrial lining of the uterus without systemic signs, which is associated with chronic postpartum infection of the uterus with pathogenic bacteria. Nitric oxide (NO) is an inflammatory mediator that among other effects causes smooth muscle relaxation and mediated cytoimmunity and inflammation toxicity. To see if the nitric oxide concentration in plasma and uterine secrets is related with postpartum endometritis, NO concentrations in plasma and uterine secrets were measured in dairy cows with puerperal endometritis (clinical endometritis (n = 60) and subclinical endometritis (n = 58)). Cows with clinical or subclinical endometritis showed higher concentrations of NO in both plasma and uterine secrets when compared with normal cows and the highest concentrations of NO in plasma and uterine secrets were found in dairy cows with clinical endometritis. Expression level of NOS2 mRNA in endometrial biopsies from cows with puerperal endometritis was also higher and the highest expression of NOS2 mRNA was found in cows with clinical endometritis. The results showed that concentrations of NO in plasma and uterine fluid are related with the degree of endometritis which may be useful to diagnose the endometritis in dairy cows.

Abstract
In the dairy cow, puerperal uterine intra-luminal concentrations of PGE(2) are related to the establishment and severity of uterine infections. Here we evaluated whether the blood concentrations of PGE(2) and the gene transcription profiles of enzymes involved in its synthesis (cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin E synthase) could be used as markers of predisposition and/or presence of puerperal uterine infections. We also studied the relationship between the endocrine status and the leukocyte profiles around parturition and the transcription patterns of the genes. Finally, we have characterized the in vitro gene transcription and expression response to a challenge of LPS. Gene transcription profiles, quantified by real-time PCR, were similar in normal puerperium and metritis/endometritis cows, indicating that they are not suitable markers of predisposition to/presence of puerperal uterine infections. Transcription decreased from 2 weeks before parturition until parturition, when a minimum was attained, and then increased during the first week postpartum. The lowest gene transcription, at parturition, was coincidental with the highest total leukocytes, polymorphonuclear neutrophils and CD14 positive cell numbers. It is suggested that by this mechanism, a large number of PMN can be recruited into the uterus after parturition, avoiding an excessive acute inflammatory response. The lowest gene transcription was also coincidental with the surge in cortisol concentrations, indicating that this hormone plays a main immunomodulatory role around parturition. Gene transcription was significantly greater after stimulation with LPS than in non-stimulated blood. We suggest that this PGE(2) producing cells might arrive to the uterine lumen, contributing to the local PGE(2) concentrations and mediating the inflammatory response.

Serum biochemical abnormalities included hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and azotemia. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a pyometra with uterine torsion; an ovariohysterectomy was performed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to quantify markers of myometrial ischemia, necrosis, and inflammation in women undergoing uterine artery embolization (UAE). STUDY DESIGN Women with symptomatic fibroids were randomized to treatment with UAE (n = 14) or abdominal myomectomy (n = 11). Peripheral venous blood samples were taken before and after the procedure, at 24 hours and 6 weeks. Creatine kinase (CK) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were measured as markers of necrosis and ischemia. Inflammation was assessed by measurement of C-reactive protein (CRP). OUTCOME MEASURES Changes in the markers following UAE and myomectomy were measured. RESULTS Following UAE, no change was seen in CK or IMA, but CRP was raised only at 6 weeks. At 24 hours after myomectomy, there were significant rises in all 3 markers, with a return to normal by 6 weeks. CONCLUSION No significant ischemia or necrosis occurs in the myometrium following UAE, whereas the delayed rise in CRP is likely to reflect necrosis in fibroids.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the associations between peripheral blood neutrophil (PMN) function, energy status, and uterine health in periparturient dairy cows. Data were collected from 83 multiparous Holstein cows. Blood samples for PMN function determination were collected weekly from 1 week prior to calving (week -1) through 4 weeks after calving and again at 8 weeks after calving. Energy metabolites were measured and dry matter intake (DMI) was determined from weeks -2 to 5 to evaluate energy status of cows during the periparturient period. All cows were examined for uterine health disorders. Blood PMN killing ability was evaluated by determining myeloperoxidase activity and cytochrome c reduction activity in isolated blood PMN's. For cows that were diagnosed with puerperal metritis and subclinical (SC) endometritis and puerperal metritis, blood PMN functions were significantly (P<0.05) impaired during the periparturient period, compared to cows with normal uterine health. Cows with subclinical endometritis and puerperal metritis or SC endometritis also had significantly (P<0.01) higher NEFA and significantly (P<0.001) lower DMI during the periparturient period, and significantly (P<0.05) higher BHBA during early lactation, compared to cows with normal uterine health. Neutrophil function was also significantly (P<0.01) impaired in cows with peripartum negative energy balance, which was characterized by elevated blood levels of NEFA and decreased DMI. Decreased PMN function and energy balance were associated with uterine health disorders and the decreases in PMN function and energy balance occurred prior to parturition and prior to the detection of these uterine disorders.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the prostaglandins (PGs) production and ovarian function in gilts after intrauterine infusions of 10(6) and 10(9) colony-forming units (cfu)/ml of Escherichia coli (E. coli). In Experiments 1 and 2, 30 ml of saline or 30 ml of E. coli suspension containing 10(6) or 10(9)cfu/ml, were infused once into each uterine horn in three groups of gilts on day 3 of the estrous cycle, respectively. In Experiment 1, 17 days after treatment it was revealed that inoculation of E. coli 10(9)cfu/ml induced severe acute or subacute endometritis while 10(6)cfu of E. coli evoked moderate acute endometritis or resulted in no inflammatory changes. In the gilts receiving 10(9)cfu/ml of E. coli, the concentration of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF(2)alpha in blood from the jugular vein was elevated (P<0.05-0.001) compared to concentration in the gilts inoculated with 10(6)cfu on days 8-17 after treatment. Both the E. coli-treated groups had a lower (P<0.05, P<0.01) progesterone plasma level from days 10 to 14 after administration than the control group. On day 17 of the study, infusion of E. coli 10(9)cfu/ml, in comparison to 10(6)cfu, resulted in the greater (P<0.001) content of PGE(2) in the myometrium. The content of both PGs in the endometrium as well as PGF(2alpha) in the myometrium of gilts-treated with 10(9)cfu/ml of E. coli was lower (P<0.001) than in gilts-treated with 10(6)cfu of bacteria. Newly formed corpora lutea were found in the gilts infused with 10(6), but not those infused with 10(9)cfu/ml of E. coli on day 17 after infusion. On day 8 of the study (Experiment 2), the blood from utero-ovarian vein of the gilts-treated with 10(9)cfu/ml of bacteria had a higher (P<0.05) PGF(2alpha) level and lower (P<0.001) PGE(2) level than following infusion of E. coli 10(6)cfu/ml. Also on day 8 of the study, the content of PGE(2) in the endometrium, both the PGs in the myometrium as well as cyclooxygenase-2 in the endometrium and myometrium was greater (P<0.01, P<0.001) after applying 10(9)cfu/ml than 10(6)cfu/ml of E. coli. These results indicate that intrauterine infusions of 10(6) or 10(9)cfu/ml of E. coli lead to the development of inflammatory states of different intensities which is connected with different PGF(2alpha) and PGE(2) production and function of ovaries.

Abstract
Endotoxemia in bitches with pyometra can cause severe systemic effects directly or via the release of inflammatory mediators. Plasma endotoxin concentrations were measured in ten bitches suffering from pyometra with moderately to severely deteriorated general condition, and in nine bitches admitted to surgery for non-infectious reasons. Endotoxin samples were taken on five occasions before, during and after surgery. In addition, urine and uterine bacteriology was performed and hematological, blood biochemical parameters, prostaglandin F2alpha metabolite 15-ketodihydro-PGF2alpha (PG-metabolite), progesterone and oestradiol (E2-17beta) levels were analysed. The results confirm significantly increased plasma levels of endotoxin in bitches with pyometra and support previous reports of endotoxin involvement in the pathogenesis of the disease. Plasma concentrations of PG-metabolite were elevated in pyometra bitches and provide a good indicator of endotoxin release since the concentrations were significantly correlated to the endotoxin levels and many other hematological and chemistry parameters. The gamma-globulin serum protein electrophoresis fraction and analysis of PG-metabolite can be valuable in the diagnosis of endotoxin involvement if a reliable, rapid and cost-effective test for PG-metabolite analysis becomes readily available in the future. Treatment inhibiting prostaglandin biosynthesis and related compounds could be beneficial for bitches suffering from pyometra.

Abstract
Bitches with pyometra are potential emergency cases which may be clinically difficult to differentiate from cases of cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) in combination with mucometra. In the present study plasma prostaglandin F(2alpha), as measured by its main metabolite 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF(2alpha) (PG-metabolite) concentrations, blood biochemical and hematological parameters were measured in 59 bitches with pyometra, 10 bitches with CEH and nine controls to determine if PG-metabolite could differentiate between the three uterine conditions. Bitches with pyometra had significantly higher plasma levels of PG-metabolite than bitches with CEH (P=0.002) and the controls (P=0.002). PG-metabolite analysis alone had a high sensitivity (98.3%) and a high specificity (80.0%) for the differentiation of pyometra versus CEH in bitches where fluid in the uterus was diagnosed. When a combination of PG-metabolite and percentage band neutrophils (PBN) was used for differentiation of the two diagnoses, a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 90.0% was obtained. This means that the combination of PG-metabolite and PBN analysis allows for differentiation between cases of pyometra and CEH. If the PG-metabolite level in a bitch is >or=4,524 pmol l(-1), there is a 99% probability of the diagnosis pyometra versus CEH. Levels of PG-metabolite >or=3,054 pmol l(-1), >or=2,388 pmol l(-1) or>or=1,666 pmol l(-1) indicates a 95%, 90% or 80% probability of pyometra, respectively. At high PG-metabolite levels (above about 3,000 pmol l(-1)), PG-metabolite alone is enough for differentiation of pyometra versus CEH. The results of the present study showed that PG-metabolite analysis is valuable in the diagnosis and prediction of severity of uterine diseases.

Abstract
We estimated the percentage of CD4+ lymphocytes synthesizing IFN-gamma and IL-4 in the peripheral blood and measured the concentrations of IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha in lochia of patients with postpartum endometritis. T lymphocytes with intracellular IFN-gamma prevailed in women with physiological course of the postpartum period. The number of cells containing IL-4 increased in patients with postpartum endometritis. On days 5-7 after childbirth the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1beta and TNF-alpha in lochia of these patients were higher than in healthy postpartum women (by 1.4 and 2.7 times, respectively). The concentrations of cytokines IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 increased most significantly in patients with postpartum endometritis and active viral infection (by 3.4, 4.2, and 1.6 times, respectively).

Abstract
Production of reactive oxygen species in unfractionated peripheral blood increased in parturient women without postpartum infectious complications and patients with postpartum endometritis. The control group included nonpregnant women with normal reproductive function. Intergroup differences were revealed in the degree of respiratory burst activation with opsonized zymosan and response of isolated granulocytes to chemotactic peptide N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phen (1 muM). Production of reactive oxygen species tended to normal after therapy. We studied the effects of a specific mitogen-activated protein kinase p38MAPK inhibitor and inhibitors of tyrosine protein phosphatases and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase. The role of p38MAPK in reactive oxygen species generation by cells changes significantly in parturient women.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to validate a simple, sensitive and direct enzymeimmunoassay (EIA) procedure for 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF(2alpha) (PGFM) for use in buffaloes with postpartum reproductive disorders and determine the practicalities of using plasma concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF(2alpha) for monitoring their reproductive health. The EIA was used for determination of the circulating levels of PGFM associated with the retention of fetal membranes, postpartum endometritis and variable postpartum intervals. The concentrations of PGFM with retention of fetal membranes in the periparturient period were lower as compared to buffaloes that had uneventful parturitions. Concentrations of PGFM associated with postpartum endometritis were elevated as compared to those in buffaloes free of reproductive tract infections. Buffaloes having higher plasma concentrations of PGFM in early postpartum period had shorter postpartum intervals, indicating the association between PGFM concentrations postpartum and uterine involution as well as the resumption of estrous cycle in this species. The study presents the possibility of using circulating PGFM concentrations for monitoring the postpartum reproductive health of buffaloes.

Abstract
The triglyceride content of lipid depots associated with the current feeding level is the primary determinant of leptin gene expression and the circulating leptin level. In laboratory rodents and primates the plasma leptin is influenced also by the age, gender and physiological status (puberty, pregnancy, lactation, postpartum period), and by the health condition such as sepsis due to Gram-negative (GN) bacteria. Some pathologic conditions with intensive cytokine release evoke an increase in plasma leptin, which is thought to depress the subsequent feed intake. However, the effect of these secondary factors may be species-dependent, with still unknown clinical relevance in ruminants. In our ovine and bovine models plasma leptin increased after castration and dexamethasone treatment, decreased after experimental administration of synthetic androgens in castrated rams, but remained unchanged throughout the ovarian cycle and after ovariectomy. The circulating leptin level increased temporarily during synthetic progestin (fluorogestone) treatment in ewes, but similar changes were not seen in progesterone-supplemented ewes and norgestomet-treated cows. In a second trial on dairy cows we wanted to study whether elevated plasma leptin levels are induced by experimental endotoxin mastitis, or by natural outbreak of GN mastitis and puerperal metritis. Experimental endotoxin mastitis resulted in some-hour elevation in cortisol and insulin, with a simultaneous decrease in IGF-I and thyroid hormones. In the first 14 days of lactation GN mastitis induced the same endocrine alterations as the experimental endotoxin challenge, but in natural cases these changes varied within a wider range, and were more protracted and robust. Cows with puerperal metritis had more obvious catabolic changes in the early weeks of lactation, than their healthy counterparts. However, both mastitis and puerperal metritis failed to increase the circulating leptin level, showing that in cows the plasma leptin is not responsible for the anorexia associated with these inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our purpose was to determine whether blood loss during cesarean section and postoperative endometritis rate were associated with the method of placental removal and site of uterine repair. METHODS This prospective randomized study involved 840 women who underwent cesarean section. The patients were grouped into four: (1) manual placental delivery + exteriorized uterine repair; (2) spontaneous placental delivery + exteriorized uterine repair; (3) manual placental delivery + in situ uterine repair; (4) spontaneous placental delivery + in situ uterine repair. Patients were excluded if they had received intrapartum antibiotics, had chorioamnionitis, required an emergency cesarean hysterectomy, had rupture of membranes for more than 12 hr, had bleeding diathesis, and had abnormal placentation or prior postpartum hemorrhage. The main outcome measures were postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit values, and postcesarean endometritis. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences in mean maternal age, parity, gestational age, presence and duration of membrane rupture and number of vaginal examinations between the four groups. The decrease in postoperative hemoglobin (P < 0.05) and hematocrit (P < 0.001) was significantly greater in the manual removal groups (groups 1 and 3) than in the spontaneous expulsion groups (groups 2 and 4) at 48 hr postoperatively. The incidence of postoperative endometritis was significantly higher in manual removal groups (15.2%) (groups 1 and 3) than in spontaneous groups (5.7%) (groups 2 and 4) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Manual removal of the placenta at cesarean delivery results in more operative blood loss and a higher incidence of postcesarean endometritis.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in acute-phase proteins (APPs) during mastitis metritis agalactia (MMA) in sows. Sows with MMA (group one, n=15) and healthy sows (group two, n = 15) were evaluated at days 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 postpartum. Number of total born, liveborn, stillborn, and mummified pigs did not differ significantly between the groups. Preweaning mortality was higher (P < 0.001) among MMA sows than among healthy control animals. The offspring of healthy sows had higher (P < 0.05) weaning litter weights than the off-spring of MMA sows. Mean serum alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) concentrations were higher in MMA sows on the days 1 (P < 0.05), 5 (P = 0.05), and 10 (P < 0.001) post partum. Mean serum haptoglobin (HPT) was higher in MMA sows on days 1, 5 (P < 0.001), and 10 (P < 0.05) of lactation. Cortisol serum concentrations up to day 10 post partum were higher (P < 0.001) in MMA sows than in healthy sows. AGP was negatively correlated with litter weight, indicating that activation of the cellular immune response in sows negatively affects the growth rate of suckling piglets. Correlations were found between the overall means for weight, acute-phase proteins, and serum cortisol concentration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of intrauterine Escherichia coli infusion on the patterns of plasma LH, prolactin, progesterone, androstenedione, testosterone, oestrone, oestradiol-17beta, cortisol and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2alpha (PGFM) in gilts during the oestrous cycle. On day 4 of the oestrous cycle (day 0), 25 mL of saline or 25 mL of Escherichia coli suspension, containing 10(7) colony forming units x mL(-1), was infused once into the each uterine horn in group I or II respectively. The control gilts developed a new oestrous cycle at the expected time but not bacteria-treated. Endometritis and vaginal discharge developed in all gilts after Escherichia coli infusion. The administration of Escherichia coli resulted in a reduction of plasma levels of LH, prolactin, oestrone and oestradiol-17beta (P < 0.05-0.001), mainly on days 15-18 after treatment (expected perioestrous period). During this time, the plasma androstenedione level was elevated (P < 0.05-0.001) after bacteria infusion. In the gilts receiving bacteria, progesterone concentration decreased from day 8 after treatment and was low until the end of the study (P < 0.05-0.001). On days 8-12 after bacteria administration, the level of PGFM was higher (P < 0.001) than that found in the control group. These results suggest that the developing inflammatory process of the endometrium in gilts following Escherichia coli infusion significantly affects the pituitary-ovarian axis function as well as prostaglandin production leading to anoestrus.

Abstract
Reproductive diseases after parturition are a serious problem in dairy cattle. It is important to predict postpartum reproductive diseases early and to develop prophylaxis. The objectives of this study were to demonstrate changes in the peripheral blood concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6) before parturition, which was mainly produced by T helper 2 type (Th2) cells, and to investigate a correlation between the IL-6 concentration and the occurrence of the postpartum retained placenta, endometritis and/or follicular cyst in dairy cattle. Twenty-seven Holstein-Friesian cows were used for this study. Thirteen had no clinical disease, 8 had retained placenta, 4 were diagnosed with endometritis by vaginal inspection, and 2 were diagnosed with follicular cyst by rectal palpation at 1 and 2 months after parturition. Blood samples were collected 60 days pre- and post-partum. They used for IL-6, progesterone (P(4)) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) concentration determination. This study showed that the IL-6 concentration prepartum was higher than postpartum. Low levels of IL-6 and P(4) in peripheral blood prepartum tended to affect retained placenta and a high level of IL-6 prepartum tended to affect endometritis. These results indicate that measurement of change in the IL-6 concentration during pregnancy is one useful tool for predicting crisis in postpartum reproductive diseases in dairy cattle.

Abstract
Blood concentrations of progesterone, 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2alpha (PGFM) and endotoxin, and uterine fluid concentrations of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), PGFM and endotoxin were evaluated in 14 dairy cows with puerperal endometritis (mild (n=6) and heavy (n=8)). Endotoxin was measured using a quantitative kinetic assay. Cows with heavy endometritis had significantly higher concentrations of plasma PGFM (P<0.01) and uterine fluid PGE(2) and endotoxin (P<0.05) than cows with mild endometritis. Concentrations of PGFM in plasma and uterine fluid, of PGFM and PGE(2), and PGE(2) and endotoxin in uterine fluid were positively and significantly (P<0.05) correlated. The presence of endotoxin in plasma was detected in one out of six mild and in eight out of eight heavy endometritis cows. Peak plasma endotoxin concentrations (0.08-9.14 endotoxin units/ml (EU/ml) were observed between 1 and 12 days postpartum (pp) and thereafter amounts generally remained below 0.1 EU/ml (last day of detection: Day 27 pp). Abnormal ovarian function was observed in six cows (four with prolonged anoestrus and two with long luteal phase after the first postpartum ovulation). Plasma endotoxin concentrations were detected in the anoestric cows. The results suggest that: (i) concentrations of uterine fluid endotoxin and PGE(2) and of plasma PGFM are related to the degree of endometritis; (ii) absorption of endotoxin from the uterus to the bloodstream occurs, mainly in heavy endometritis cows; and (iii) there is a relationship between uterine infection, endotoxin production and resumption of pp ovarian activity.

Abstract
The profile and function of blood and uterine leukocytes were evaluated in 14 dairy cows that spontaneously recovered from postpartum endometritis (mild, n=6 and heavy, n=8; general health not affected). From a minimum of 2 weeks before parturition until 6 weeks postpartum, blood samples were obtained twice weekly for leukocyte counts and leukogram determination and once weekly for flow cytometry assessment of polimorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) phagocytic capacity and oxidative burst activity. Uterine fluid-stained smears, obtained twice weekly from parturition until fluid was present in the uterus, were used for determination of the percentage of PMN, of phagocytizing PMN (phago-PMN) and of the mean number of phagocyted bacteria per phagocytizing PMN (phagocytic index; PI). Uterine swabs were obtained twice weekly from parturition until 35 days postpartum for bacteriological examination. The time of endometritis diagnosis was similar in cows with mild or heavy endometritis but the latter cows had a significantly longer persistence of the infection and of the isolation of Gram-negative anaerobes from the uterus. However, the effect of group (mild versus heavy) was not significant for all the blood and uterine parameters analysed. The effect of sampling day (within group effect) was significant (p<0.01 to p<0.00001) for all parameters, except for the blood monocyte count and the blood PMN phagocytic capacity, in which only a tendency for significance was observed (p<0.1). The effect of the interaction group x sampling day was significant only for the blood monocyte count. The phago-PMN and the PI were significantly correlated (r=0.70, p<0.001). A significant correlation was also observed between the uterine fluid phago-PMN and the blood PMN oxidative burst activity (r=-0.41, p<0.05). At the spontaneous recovery, the blood PMN oxidative burst activity was significantly higher (p<0.05) and the percentage of intrauterine phago-PMN and the PI were significantly lower (p<0.001 and p<0.01, respectively) than at diagnosis of endometritis. These results suggest that a decrease in blood PMN oxidative burst activity until the first week postpartum could be associated with an increased susceptibility to early postpartum endometritis. The later increase in this parameter as well as the increase in the intrauterine fluid phago-PMN and PI, might favour the spontaneous resolution of endometritis.

Abstract
Uterine infections (i.e., endometritis) can have a major economic impact on dairy production. Identifying cows that are susceptible to endometritis and improving the diagnosis of endometritis could lead to a reduction in the impact of such infections. Thus, we used Holstein cows to determine whether postpartum changes in 13, 14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF2alpha (PGFM), a metabolite of PGF2alpha, could be used to identify cows that are susceptible to endometritis and to improve the diagnosis of endometritis. Cows were assigned to three treatments. 1) Control (n = 10) had no clinical or bacteriological signs of endometritis during the study. 2) Treated (n = 11) developed endometritis spontaneously and were treated i.m. with 25 mg of PGF2alpha immediately after clinical diagnosis (d 17.6 +/- 0.8 postpartum; mean +/- SEM). 3) Untreated (n = 10) developed endometritis spontaneously and were not treated after diagnosis (d 20.0 +/- 0.5). Examinations of external and internal genitalia and bacteriological data were used to diagnose endometritis. From d 0 (calving) until approximately d 63 postpartum, jugular blood was collected three times weekly. Progesterone and PGFM were quantified in plasma. For PGFM, the treatment x day interaction was significant (P < 0.01). Overall PGFM profiles for Control and Treated differed (P < 0.05), but the Untreated profile did not differ from either Control or Treated. To better understand the interaction, PGFM data from d 0 to 35 postpartum were partitioned into consecutive 7-d periods, and d-36 and greater data were partitioned into one period. Effects of treatment, day, and the treatment x day interaction were then evaluated within period. Except for the d-15 to -21 period, PGFM was greater (P < 0.03) in Control than in Treated and Untreated. In Treated and Untreated, PGFM increased during the d-15 to -21 period. For progesterone, treatment did not affect the profiles, but day was significant (P < 0.001). Progesterone concentrations were basal from d 0 until approximately d 12, and they generally increased after d 12. Onset of endometritis was associated with increased progesterone concentrations. Treatment did not affect the interval from calving to first detected estrus (29.5 +/- 4.9 d) or from calving to AI (73.3 +/- 8.7 d). We conclude that PGFM measures have the potential to be used to identify cows that are more likely to develop endometritis and that PGFM may aid in the diagnosis of endometritis.

Abstract
When cows develop endometritis after birth, Escherichia coli and Arcanobacterium pyogenes are usually the most prominent bacteria present in bovine uterine lochial secretions. A. pyogenes alone is rarely found in the course of a disturbed puerperium. This was confirmed in this study, since average and high-grade uterine contaminations were always associated with the presence of both bacteria. The contamination grade was positively correlated with uterine polymorphonuclear granulocyte (PMN) numbers and negatively correlated with blood PMN numbers. Whether E. coli and A. pyogenes affect the phenotype and function of bovine PMN in a similar or differential way was subject to in vitro studies. PMN were tested in the presence of washed bacterial fragments or culture supernatants taken as a source for soluble and/or secreted bacterial products. Fragments and soluble products differed only quantitatively in their effects on PMN. Usually, long-time exposure (24h) of PMN to fragments induced the strongest effects. Accelerated death of granulocytes was only moderately induced by both E. coli and A. pyogenes products. Both E. coli and A. pyogenes products induced the enhanced expression of a membrane molecule detected by mAb IL-A110 and of CD11b. Expression of other surface structures remained largely unchanged (MHC class I, CD11c). Functional parameters of PMN (phagocytosis; generation of reactive oxygen species, ROS; antibody-independent cellular cytotoxicity, AICC) generally declined after pre-incubation for 24h with products of E. coli or A. pyogenes. Interestingly, soluble products of A. pyogenes stimulated the phagocytosis of PMN. However, co-incubation with E. coli products abrogated this stimulatory effect. The results supply evidence for similar modes of action of the gram-negative E. coli and the gram-positive A. pyogenes on bovine PMN. Alterations in PMN function and phenotype are mainly triggered by direct contact between bacterial fragments and PMN. Inhibition experiments with polymyxin B demonstrated that E. coli-mediated effects were not solely due to the action of lipopolysaccharide. The dominant functional depression of neutrophils by E. coli products strengthens the suggestion that the earlier appearance of E. coli in the uterus may support the co-infection of this organ by A. pyogenes at later times.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine changes in white blood cell (WBC) count after cesarean and estimate risk of postoperative infection. METHODS We measured complete blood cell counts at admission and on postoperative day 1 for 458 women who had cesareans. Information from charts was abstracted, and definitions of infectious outcomes and fever were applied by three physicians masked to laboratory results. We examined changes in absolute and relative WBC counts by labor status. Likelihood ratios for postoperative infection were calculated for statistically distinct categories of percentage changes. RESULTS We excluded 60 women with chorioamnionitis. Of the remainder, 34 (8.5%) developed endometritis and three (0.8%) pneumonia. Women who labored before cesarean (n = 198) had higher antepartum (P <.001) and postoperative day 1 (P <.001) WBC counts than those who did not (n = 200). However, change in WBC count after cesarean relative to antepartum was similar for both groups (P =.41), averaging a 22% increase. We grouped percentage changes into the following three levels: up to 24%, 25-99%, and at least 100%. The lowest level (n = 246) corresponded to a category-specific likelihood ratio for diagnosis of serious postpartum infection of 0. 5 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.3, 0.8), the midlevel (n = 141) to a category-specific likelihood ratio of 1.7 (95% CI 1.2, 2.3), and the highest level (n = 11) to a category-specific likelihood ratio of 5.8 (95% CI 1.8, 18.7). CONCLUSION Labor influenced postcesarean WBC counts but did not obscure changes associated with infection. Information gained from changes in WBC counts can be used to assess risk of infection.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the value of using plasma concentrations of PGFM to diagnose subclinical endometritis in the dairy cow, and its relationship to subsequent fertility. A total of 274 cows between 24 to 29 d post partum was divided into 4 groups on the basis of clinical features of the uterus and ovary. Cows in Group 1 (n = 74) had a normal, involuting uterus and a CL on the ovary; cows in Group 2 (n = 51) had a normal, involuting uterus but no CL on the ovary; cows in Group 3 (n = 83) did not have a normal, involuting uterus but had a CL on the ovary; and cows in Group 4 (n = 66) did not have a normal, involuting uterus or a CL on the ovary. A blood sample was obtained from each cow on the day they were placed on the study, and plasma concentrations of PGFM and P4 were determined using RIA. Cows were artificially inseminated (AI) at the first observed estrus after Day 60 post partum, and pregnancy was determined by palpation of the uterus per rectum between 45 and 50 d postAI. Reproductive responses evaluated were conception rate to first service, days open, and percentage of cows pregnant by 90, 120, 150 and 180 d post partum. Data were analyzed using GLM procedures of SAS and a 2 x 2 factorial with contrast procedures. Polynomial regression analysis was used to determine the shape of the PGFM, P4 and fertility curves. There was no difference among mean PGFM concentrations of cows in each group. The rate of decline of plasma PGFM concentrations was lower in cows with an abnormal uterus and a CL on the ovary compared with those without a CL. A lower percentage of cows with abnormal uteri was pregnant by 90 d post partum compared with cows with normal uteri. From the results of this study, it was concluded that plasma PGFM concentrations between Days 24 to 29 post partum were not effective in identifying cows with subclinical endometritis.

Abstract
A prospective study was conducted to determine the relationship of serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and cholesterol concentrations and herd management practices to the occurrence of metritis, mastitis and retained placenta in Holstein cows in Michigan. Serum samples were collected once prepartum and once postpartum from 257 cows. Animals were under observation for disease occurrence from the date of calving until 3 months postpartum. Metabolic variables used were (1) prepartum only; (2) postpartum only; (3) the NEFA/cholesterol ratio for both pre- and postpartum samples. Management variables included maternity management, feed management, and factors such as season and parity. Multivariable logistic models with random-effect terms to account for the herd effect were used for data analysis. Results showed that: (1) metabolic events associated with energy insufficiency-increased fat mobilization and serum lipoprotein metabolism-were related to increased risk of metritis and retained placenta; (2) higher energy consumption during the last weeks of the dry period might reduce disease risk at parturition; (3) serum NEFA and cholesterol concentrations have potential as indicators of disease risk in dairy cows.

Abstract
The blood gas status of 52 bitches presented with pyometra-endometritis complex was examined. Nine healthy bitches with a normal sexual cycle served as control group. Depending on the clinical symptoms, the sick bitches were divided into two groups (A and B). Compared to the control group, both test groups showed significant differences in pH, HCO3 and base excess levels. A correlation between the severity of disease and the decreasing pH level was noted. The disturbance of acid-base balance also resulted in respiratory and metabolic acidosis. A high proportion of these acidotic states was not compensated (group A: 71.4%; group B: 50.0%).

Abstract
The aims of this study were, to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of clarithromycin and to study the passage of the drug into breast milk. Twelve patients (age 24 to 38; weight 44 to 83 kg), suffering from puerperal infections, were treated orally with 250 mg clarithromycin b.i.d. for 6 days. Samples of blood and breast milk were taken at timed intervals. The specimens were assayed for clarithromycin and its active metabolite 14-hydroxy-clarithromycin by HPLC and electrochemical detection. Serum concentrations of clarithromycin in the investigated patients were higher than those reported in healthy volunteers. The mean peak concentrations of clarithromycin and 14-hydroxy-clarithromycin in breast milk were about 25%, and 75% respectively of the corresponding serum concentrations. All patients recovered within 2 to 4 days and no drug-associated side effects (eg. gastrointestinal) were noted. Clarithromycin appears to be an appropriate antibiotic for the treatment of puerperal infections and (because of its considerable concentrations in breast milk) for puerperal mastitis as well.

Abstract
Gentamicin in combination with other antibiotics is frequently used in the treatment of postpartum endomyometritis. The need to monitor and maintain therapeutic concentrations, however, is controversial. To assess the role of monitoring, serum gentamicin concentrations were prospectively studied in an obstetric population treated for postpartum endomyometritis. Clinical course was correlated to serum gentamicin levels obtained using a 1 mg/kg/dose regimen. No patient demonstrated therapeutic concentrations. Sixteen of 18 obstetric patients (88%) exhibited a clinical response despite subtherapeutic serum gentamicin concentrations. The two failures included one case of septicemia and one wound seroma. Serum gentamicin levels of this obstetric population when compared to those from a gynecologic population treated for benign disease demonstrated no statistical difference. These data suggest that clinical response provides an accurate indication of the efficacy of therapy and that gentamicin doses of 1 mg/kg/dose provide sufficient antibiotic coverage in most cases. These results do not support the use of increased gentamicin dosages and the need to attain therapeutic levels in the obstetric patient, as previously suggested.

Abstract
Forty-four female American Shorthair cats with inflammatory uterine disease or infertility were evaluated. Data collected included age, month of diagnosis, housing, reproductive history, results of bacteriologic culture of uterine specimens, serum concentrations of estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin and histopathologic features of the ovaries and uterus. Histologically, the ovaries of 19 cats were dominated by active or cystic follicles, whereas 25 cats had luteal-phase ovaries. Of the 25 cats with active corpora lutea, 20 had either recently weaned litters (n = 11) without subsequent exposure to a male cat, or had been housed individually for lengthy periods (n = 9). The finding of active corpora lutea under these circumstances indicates that in queens, ovulation may occur by mechanisms not involving coitus. Prominent, active corpora lutea on the ovaries were associated with adenomatotic proliferative changes in the superficial and glandular epithelium of the uterus and with myometrial hyperplasia, compared with the uterus of cats with follicular ovaries (P less than 0.01). Serum progesterone concentration greater than or equal to 1.87 ng/ml was consistently associated with luteal-phase ovaries. Serum progesterone values less than or equal to 0.15 ng/ml were consistently associated with follicular-phase ovaries. Escherichia coli was the organism most commonly isolated from uterine contents.

Abstract
In order to assess the usefulness of haptoglobin as a measure of the acute phase response in cattle, the concentration of serum haptoglobin was estimated in the non-infectious conditions of milk fever and ketosis, and in the infectious conditions of severe mastitis, acute severe metritis, retained placenta and chronic endometritis. Mean haptoglobin concentrations were normal in cattle with non-infectious conditions and chronic endometritis but significantly increased in cattle with infectious conditions.

Abstract
The results of complex treatment of 81 patients with pyoinflammatory diseases with the use of blood ultraviolet irradiation are discussed. A marked clinical effect was noted, the terms of treatment reduced by 5-10 days, the outcomes improved, and the number of complications decreased. Irradiation of autologous blood by ultraviolet rays led to modulation of the indices of antimicrobial protection, increase of the intensity of the histochemical reaction to peroxidase up to 40-50%, and diminution of pH in the neutrophil phagosomes to 5.0. The ultrastructure and ability of thrombocytes to store serotonin were restored, and intensity of their metabolic processes increased, the membrane phospholipid composition changed, and juvenile platelet forms appeared.

Abstract
We measured serum levels of progesterone and estradiol among 35 patients with endometritis confirmed by endometrial biopsy. The onset of symptoms took place predominantly in the proliferative phase of the cycle. A negative correlation was found between the serum progesterone levels and the histopathologic severity of plasma cell endometritis. Our results suggest that the hormonal status contributes to the immune response and susceptibility to endometrial infection.

Abstract
Changes in progesterone (P4), 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and 11-hydroxycorticosteroid (11-OHCS) concentrations in blood plasma were determined in daily intervals from the day of parturition to day 15 post partum (p.p.) in cows with physiological puerperium (n = 8), with puerperal endometritis (n = 6), and with placenta retention (n = 6). Cows with puerperium disorders (endometritis, placenta retention) had significantly higher P4 levels in the period from day 3 to day 7 p.p. than cows with physiological puerperium. E2 concentrations decreased to basal values following the parturition in cows with spontaneous parturitions and subsequent expulsion of the placenta. A delayed decrease in E2 concentrations after parturition and a significant increase on day 5 and day 7 p.p. were recorded in the group of animals with placenta retention. Significantly higher levels of 11-OHCS in blood plasma were detected by day 5 or by day 8 p.p. in cows with placenta retention and puerperal endometritis. Extraovarial sources of sexual steroids resulting in endocrine malfunctions are discussed as well as likely consequences for puerperium.

Abstract
Fifty-two women with unexplained infertility and 55 controls with recently proved fertility were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection in the blood and genital tract. Serum antibody titration was performed with indirect fluorescence. Cell cultures were performed to screen for CT in urethral and endocervical swabs, in endometrial samples taken without endocervical contamination and in salpingeal and/or peritoneal fluid samples. Anti-CT serum antibodies were detected in 36.5% of the patients; CT was isolated in urethral cultures in 26.9%, endocervical cultures in 23.1%, endometrial cultures in 25% and endosalpingeal and/or peritoneal fluid cultures in 1.9%. Comparison of the results in the patients and controls showed a significant difference in the incidence of CT infection in endometrial, urethral and endocervical cultures. Chlamydial endometritis could have been the direct cause of infertility in the patients studied or merely might have indicated endosalpingitis that was not detectable at laparoscopy.

Abstract
Serum levels of CA 125 and other selected tumour markers were measured in 31 patients with proven pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Ten (32%) of the patients had elevated CA 125, one (4%) had elevated CEA, and none had elevated CA 15-3, AFP or beta 2-microglobulin. Compared to patients with normal CA 125, patients with elevated CA 125 were older, more often users of intrauterine contraceptive devices, had longer duration of symptoms, higher erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and more often had an adnexal mass on pelvic examination. There was a correlation between CA 125 levels and the severity of adnexal inflammation as defined by laparoscopy. Isolation of specific micro-organisms from the upper genital tract was not associated with elevated CA 125. In most women serum levels of CA 125 decreased during treatment. PID should be considered as a major cause of positive CA 125 findings among young women.

Abstract
A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that high cortisol concentrations associated with products of infections (endotoxin) cause derangement in the neuroendocrine mechanism controlling ovulation in heifers. Eight Holstein heifers were given 2 injections of prostaglandin (PG), 11 days apart, to synchronize estrus. Starting from 25 hours after the second injection of PG (PG-2), the uterus of each heifer was infused with 5 ml of pyrogen-free water (control, n = 3) or Escherichia coli endotoxin (5 micrograms/kg of body weight) in 5 ml of pyrogen-free water (treated, n = 5), once every 6 hours for 10 treatments. Blood samples were obtained every 15 minutes via indwelling jugular catheter for an hour before and 2 hours after each infusion, then hourly until an hour before the next infusion. Ultrasonography of the ovaries was performed every 12 hours, starting 24 hours after PG-2 injection until 96 hours after PG-2 injection. Serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone and cortisol were determined by validated radioimmunoassays. Changes in cortisol concentrations were not detected in control heifers with preovulatory luteinizing hormone surges at 60 to 66 hours after PG-2 injection, followed by ovulations 72 to 96 hours after PG-2 was injected. None of the treated heifers ovulated, and the resulting follicular cysts (14 to 18 mm diameter) persisted for 7 to 21 days. In all treated heifers, serum cortisol concentrations increased (4- to 10-fold) during the first 2 hours after each infusion and then decreased gradually until the next infusion. Luteinizing hormone concentrations remained at baseline values throughout the treatment period in all treated heifers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Postpartum women receiving gentamicin for endometritis were studied to determine if selective determination of gentamicin serum levels was cost-effective in terms of safety and efficacy. The women were randomized into two groups of 30 patients each. In the control group gentamicin serum levels were determined after the third dose. In the study group, levels were determined only if renal dysfunction was evident or if the patient failed to respond to therapy. Determination of serum levels did not assure a better therapeutic outcome in either group, as measured by hospital stay, duration of treatment, total cost of antibiotics, and hospital readmissions. Although pharmacokinetic dosing equations were used, the use of 1.75 mg/kg every 8 hours based on actual body weight in patients with average heights and weights would have produced acceptable results. We conclude that routine monitoring of gentamicin serum levels is not required in otherwise healthy postpartum women with endometritis.
