Quantum Advantage of Thermal Machines with Bose and Fermi Gases

In this article, we show that a quantum gas, a collection of massive, non-interacting, indistinguishable quantum particles, can be realized as a thermodynamic machine as an artifact of energy quantization and, hence, bears no classical analog. Such a thermodynamic machine depends on the statistics of the particles, the chemical potential, and the spatial dimension of the system. Our detailed analysis demonstrates the fundamental features of quantum Stirling cycles, from the viewpoint of particle statistics and system dimensions, that helps us to realize desired quantum heat engines and refrigerators by exploiting the role of quantum statistical mechanics. In particular, a clear distinction between the behavior of a Fermi gas and a Bose gas is observed in one dimension, rather than in higher dimensions, solely due to the innate differences in their particle statistics indicating the conspicuous role of a quantum thermodynamic signature in lower dimensions.

Calculation of 89Y(p,x)86,88,89gZr, 86g,87g,88gY, 85gSr, and 84Rb reaction cross sections based on level density

Excitation functions based on level density were calculated for proton-induced on yttrium-89 using the TALYS-1.8 code. Hence, production cross-section of the ⁸⁹Y(p,x)^86,88,89gZr, ^86g,87g,88gY, ^85gSr, and ^84gRb were computed up to 50 MeV. In this study, the constant temperature model alongside the Fermi Gas model (CGCM) was employed as a default model. For this reason, the a-parameter as an essential parameter in the Fermi Gas formula was modified to obtain the best result. Besides, the Back-shifted Fermi Gas Model (BSFGM) and the Generalized Superfluid Model (GSM) are presented to the deliberation. The outcomes of cross-sections were compared with the experimental data approaching regarding desired consequences.

Triviality of a model of particles with point interactions in the thermodynamic limit

We consider a model of fermions interacting via point interactions, defined via a certain weighted Dirichlet form. While for two particles the interaction corresponds to infinite scattering length, the presence of further particles effectively decreases the interaction strength. We show that the model becomes trivial in the thermodynamic limit, in the sense that the free energy density at any given particle density and temperature agrees with the corresponding expression for non-interacting particles.

Plasmon-in-a-Box: On the Physical Nature of Few-Carrier Plasmon Resonances

Recent demonstrations in doped semiconductor nanocrystals establish that a plasmon resonance can be sustained by a handful of charge carriers, much smaller in number than conventionally thought. This finding raises questions about the physical nature of such a collective resonance, a fundamental question in condensed matter and many-body physics, which the author addresses here by means of a plasmon-in-a-box model. A small number of carriers confined within a nanocrystal exhibit multiple transitions of individual carriers between quantized states. However, as carriers are progressively added, spectral lines associated with single-carrier excitations evolve into a band representing a collective resonance. This evolution is gradual, and it involves an intermediate regime where single-carrier excitations and few-carrier collective excitations coexist, until, at high carrier numbers, a purely classical collective resonance involving all carriers in the nanocrystal is sustained. The author finds that the emergence of the plasmon resonance is a density-driven transition; at high enough carrier densities, the Coulomb repulsion between carriers becomes strong enough to allow individual carriers to overcome their confinement to the nanocrystal lattice and to participate in a collective excitation within the mean Coulomb field of other carriers. The findings represent deeper insight into the physical picture of a plasmon resonance and serve as a potential design guide for nanoscale optoelectronic components and photocatalytic plasmonic clusters.
