The importance of ion kinetic energy for interference removal in ICP-MS/MS

The effect of ion kinetic energy on gas phase ion reactivity with ICP-MS/MS was investigated in order to explore tuning strategies for interference removal. The collision/reaction gases CO2, N2O and O2 were used to observe the ion product distribution for 48 elements using an Agilent tandem ICP-MS (ICP-MS/MS) as a function of reaction gas flow rate (pressure) and ion kinetic energy. The kinetic energy of the incident ion was varied by adjusting the octopole bias (Voct). The three gases all form oxides (MO+) as the primary product with differing reaction enthalpies that result in distinct differences in the ion energies required for reaction with product ion distributions that vary with Voct. Consequently, by varying the ion kinetic energy (i.e., Voct), differences in interference reactivity can be used to achieve maximum separation. Three practical application examples were reported to demonstrate how the ion kinetic energy can be varied to achieve the ideal ion product distribution for interference resolution: CO2 for the removal of 238U in Pu analyses, CO2 for the removal of 40Ar16O vs. 56Fe, and O2 for the removal of Sm in Eu analyses, analogous to Pu/Am. The results demonstrate how the starting ion energy defined by Voct is an important factor to fully leverage the utility of any given reaction gas to remove interferences in the mass spectrum using ICP-MS/MS.

Why coastal lagoons are so productive? Physical bases of fishing productivity in coastal lagoons

Coastal lagoons are among the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. Annual primary production varies from 50 to > 500 g C m-2 year-1, being of the same order of magnitude as that of the upwelling areas. Many lagoons lie within the range of eutrophic (300-500 g C m-2 year-1) or hypereutrophic (> 500 g C m-2 year-1) conditions. The high productivity of coastal lagoons makes them subject of exploitation by many marine fishes and invertebrates, that use them as nursery areas and feeding grounds during their early life cycle phases, and most lagoons support important fisheries or maintain aquaculture exploitations. The high levels of their biological production can be explained by some of their common features as shallowness and the strong influence of terrestrial systems. Shallowness favors that the photic zone extends to the lagoon bottom and that wind can promote the resuspension of nutrients and organisms. The interaction with land also introduces significant amounts of nutrients. However, trophic variables can explain < 43 % of the fishing yields, and further than the trophic status of the lagoons, several works showed that the biological productivity of coastal lagoons can be explained by their geomorphological features such as the positive influence of shoreline development and the negative influence of depth. Using the Mar Menor lagoon as a case study, we propose that although nutrient inputs and light can be limiting factors for photosynthetic based productivity, increasing fishing yield up to a certain limit, the productivity of lagoons is mainly promoted by more general forces associated to physical and chemical gradients.

Breaking New Ground in HEV Energy Management: Kinetic Energy Utilization and Systematic EMS Approaches based on robust drive control

The issues faced by hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) include locating and managing free energy to preserve resource dynamics and constraints while preserving prolonged autonomy. This study assessed a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) equipped with a fuel cell (FC), battery, direct current generators (DCGs), and supercapacitor (SC) to meet the power needs of an automobile utilizing variable power converters. This study examines four HEV energy management strategies (EMSs), increasing clean environmental power penetration by utilizing the HEV's kinetic energy, as a new contribution. Strategies for Proportional-Integral (PI), State-Machine (SM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) EMSs are discussed. In addition to implementing direct torque control with a space vector modulation-based ANFIS controller (ANFIS-DTC-SVM), this study proposes to insert DCGs in the front wheels of HEVs for free energy production. Simulations of EMSs yielded approximative findings, achieving a 22.2 (%) free-exploited kinetic energy. The ANN-based EMS surpassed the competition, yielding the highest energy efficiency 98.2 (%) and the lowest fuel consumption 48.68 (SI). As a result of maximizing battery utilization and limiting fuel consumption, the examined HEV's dependability and stability were confirmed and reached, highlighting the importance of kinetic energy.

Blood Flow Energy Identifies Coronary Lesions Culprit of Future Myocardial Infarction

The present study establishes a link between blood flow energy transformations in coronary atherosclerotic lesions and clinical outcomes. The predictive capacity for future myocardial infarction (MI) was compared with that of established quantitative coronary angiography (QCA)-derived predictors. Angiography-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed on 80 human coronary lesions culprit of MI within 5 years and 108 non-culprit lesions for future MI. Blood flow energy transformations were assessed in the converging flow segment of the lesion as ratios of kinetic and rotational energy values (KER and RER, respectively) at the QCA-identified minimum lumen area and proximal lesion sections. The anatomical and functional lesion severity were evaluated with QCA to derive percentage area stenosis (%AS), vessel fractional flow reserve (vFFR), and translesional vFFR (ΔvFFR). Wall shear stress profiles were investigated in terms of topological shear variation index (TSVI). KER and RER predicted MI at 5 years (AUC = 0.73, 95% CI 0.65-0.80, and AUC = 0.76, 95% CI 0.70-0.83, respectively; p < 0.0001 for both). The predictive capacity for future MI of KER and RER was significantly stronger than vFFR (p = 0.0391 and p = 0.0045, respectively). RER predictive capacity was significantly stronger than %AS and ΔvFFR (p = 0.0041 and p = 0.0059, respectively). The predictive capacity for future MI of KER and RER did not differ significantly from TSVI. Blood flow kinetic and rotational energy transformations were significant predictors for MI at 5 years (p < 0.0001). The findings of this study support the hypothesis of a biomechanical contribution to the process of plaque destabilization/rupture leading to MI.

The kinocardiograph for assessment of fluid status in patients with acute decompensated heart failure

AIMS

To improve telemonitoring strategies in heart failure patients, there is a need for novel non-obtrusive sensors that monitor parameters closely related to intracardiac filling pressures. This proof-of-concept study aims to evaluate the responsiveness of cardiac kinetic energy (KE) measured with the Kinocardiograph (KCG), consisting of a seismocardiographic (SCG) sensor and a ballistocardiographic (BCG) sensor, during treatment of patients with acute decompensated heart failure.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Eleven patients with acute decompensated heart failure who were hospitalized for treatment with intravenous diuretics received daily KCG measurements. The KCG measurements were compared with the diameter of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and body weight. Follow-up stopped at discharge, that is, in the recompensated state. Median (interquartile range) weight and IVC diameter decreased significantly after diuretic treatment [weight 74.5 (67.6-98.7) to 73.3 (66.7-95.6) kg, P = 0.003; IVC diameter 2.47 (2.33-2.99) to 1.78 (1.65-2.47) cm, P = 0.03]. In contrast with BCG measurements, significant changes in median KE measured with SCG were observed during the passive filling phase of the diastole [SGG: 0.48 (0.39-0.60) to 0.69 (0.56-0.84), P = 0.026; BCG: 0.68 (0.46-0.73) to 0.68 (0.59-0.82), P = 0.062], the active filling phase of the diastole [SCG: 0.38 (0.30-0.61) to 0.31 (0.09-0.47), P = 0.016; BCG: 0.29 (0.17-0.39) to 0.26 (0.20-0.34), P = 0.248], and the ratio between the passive and active filling phases [SCG: 2.76 (1.68-5.30) to 5.02 (3.13-10.17), P = 0.006; BCG: 5.87 (3.57-7.55) to 5.27 (3.95-9.43), P = 0.790]. The correlations between changes in KE during the passive and active filling phases, using SCG, and changes in weight or IVC were non-significant. Systolic KE did not show significant changes.

CONCLUSION

KE measured with the KCG using SCG is highly responsive to changes in fluid status. Future research is needed to confirm its accuracy in a larger study population and specifically its application for detection of clinical deterioration in the home-environment.

Sediment modeling using laboratory-scale rainfall simulator and laser precipitation monitor

The characterization of a rainfall simulator provides an excellent opportunity to study the potential of soil erosivity without waiting for natural rain. But, precise instrumentation is required to estimate the parameters, which is seldom available. To overcome this problem, the empirical and conceptual relationships obtained through physically-based modeling help to correlate the rain parameters contributing to soil erosion. The present laboratory study used five pressurized nozzles of different capacities and a Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) to generate different rain intensities (21.0-79.0 mm h-1) and to register drop size distribution, respectively. The sediment transportation induced by rain and runoff was measured with an erosion flume of 2.50 × 1.25 × 0.56 m with an adjustable longitudinal slope. The spatial uniformity, drop size distribution, drop velocity, and kinetic energy were used to evaluate the simulator's performance. The different rain erosivity parameters were correlated and tested statistically using linear and non-linear regression analysis. The rain simulation experiments of different intensities at different pressure ranges were performed on flat, 5, 10, and 15% slopes of the erosion flume to evaluate rain characteristics and record the surface runoff and sediment yield. The median drop sizes produced during the simulator ranged from 0.38 to 2.11 mm, coinciding with natural rain. The empirical relationships were developed to correlate surface discharge and sediment yield with rain intensity by optimizing the parameters for further study of experimental field plots of different slopes. The observed and estimated rain erosivity parameters showed a significant relationship (R2 = 0.75 to 0.93; P < 0.001) in multiple regression analysis, and the metrics used to test the developed regression equations showed lower MAE, MSE, and RMSE errors indicating the adequacy of the relationships. The results indicated that the simulator helps to understand the complex task of soil erosion with hydrologic and geomorphic processes in laboratory experimentation with sufficient accuracy in measuring sediment transport events.

Intraventricular haemodynamic changes caused by increased left ventricular afterload in re-coarctation of aorta: a case report

Background

Long-term re-coarctation of the aorta can cause aortic dilatation, hypertension, and cardiac dysfunction due to increased left ventricular (LV) afterload. It is difficult to detect changes in LV function due to increased afterload if the contractile force of the left ventricle is maintained. Herein, we have reported a case of re-coarctation of the aorta, for which four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was obtained both before and after balloon dilatation for aortic re-coarctation. Ultimately, improvement in aortic helical flow and LV haemodynamics was observed.

Case summary

A 29-year-old female was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta and a bicuspid aortic valve after birth and underwent surgery at 1 month. At 8 years of age, she underwent balloon dilatation for re-coarctation. At the age of 28 years, she was diagnosed with re-coarctation triggered by hypertension. She underwent balloon dilatation as her cardiac catheterization revealed a systolic pressure gradient of 40 mmHg. Pretreatment 4D flow MRI demonstrated helical flow in the ascending aorta and descending thoracic aorta and LV blood flow analysis revealed a decrease in LV kinetic energy during systole; these improved after treatment.

Discussion

The use of helical flow evaluation by 4D flow MRI for aortic re-coarctation is well known in clinical practice. However, our report is the first to evaluate intraventricular blood flow before and after the re-coarctation treatment. The MRI evaluation demonstrated that the helical flow and LV blood flow distribution improved after re-coarctation treatment due to the reduction of afterload.

Age- and sex-specific reference values of biventricular flow components and kinetic energy by 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance in healthy subjects

BACKGROUND

Advances in four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR) have allowed quantification of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) blood flow. We aimed to (1) investigate age and sex differences of 4D flow CMR-derived LV and RV relative flow components and kinetic energy (KE) parameters indexed to end-diastolic volume (KEiEDV) in healthy subjects; and (2) assess the effects of age and sex on these parameters.

METHODS

We performed 4D flow analysis in 163 healthy participants (42% female; mean age 43 ± 13 years) of a prospective registry study (NCT03217240) who were free of cardiovascular diseases. Relative flow components (direct flow, retained inflow, delayed ejection flow, residual volume) and multiple phasic KEiEDV (global, peak systolic, average systolic, average diastolic, peak E-wave, peak A-wave) for both LV and RV were analysed.

RESULTS

Compared with men, women had lower median LV and RV residual volume, and LV peak and average systolic KEiEDV, and higher median values of RV direct flow, RV global KEiEDV, RV average diastolic KEiEDV, and RV peak E-wave KEiEDV. ANOVA analysis found there were no differences in flow components, peak and average systolic, average diastolic and global KEiEDV for both LV and RV across age groups. Peak A-wave KEiEDV increased significantly (r = 0.458 for LV and 0.341 for RV), whereas peak E-wave KEiEDV (r = - 0.355 for LV and - 0.318 for RV), and KEiEDV E/A ratio (r = - 0.475 for LV and - 0.504 for RV) decreased significantly, with age.

CONCLUSION

These data using state-of-the-art 4D flow CMR show that biventricular flow components and kinetic energy parameters vary significantly by age and sex. Age and sex trends should be considered in the interpretation of quantitative measures of biventricular flow. Clinical trial registration  https://www.

Efficient application of newly synthesized green Bi2O3 nanoparticles for sustainable biodiesel production via membrane reactor

Introduction of waste and non-edible oil seeds coupled with green nanotechnology offered a pushover to sustainable and economical biofuels and bio refinery production globally. The current study encompasses the synthesis and application of novel green, highly reactive and recyclable bismuth oxide nanocatalyst derived from Euphorbia royealeana (Falc.) Boiss. leaves extract via biological method for sustainable biofuel synthesis from highly potent Cannabis sativa seed oil (34% w/w) via membrane reactors. Advanced techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Diffraction X-Ray (EDX), and FT-IR were employed to illustrate the newly synthesized green bismuth oxide nanoparticles. 92% of FAMEs were produced under optimal reaction conditions such as a 1.5% w/w catalyst weight, 1:12 oil to methanol molar ratio, and a reaction temperature of 92 ^⸰C for 3.5 h via membrane reactor. The synthesized Cannabis biodiesel was identified using the FT-IR and GC-MS techniques. The fuel properties of synthesized biofuels (acid number 0.203 mg KOH/g, density 0.8623 kg/L, kinematic viscosity 5.32 cSt, flash point 80 °C, pour point -11 °C, cloud point -11 °C, and Sulfur 0.00047 wt %, and carbon residues 0.2) were studied and established to be comparable with internationally set parameters. The experimental data (R² = 0.997) shows that this reaction follow pseudo first-order kinetics. These findings affirm the application of green bismuth oxide nanoparticles as economical, highly reactive and eco-friendly candidate for industrial scale biodiesel production from non-edible oil seeds.

Right ventricular energetic biomarkers from 4D Flow CMR are associated with exertional capacity in pulmonary arterial hypertension

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) offers comprehensive right ventricular (RV) evaluation in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Emerging four-dimensional (4D) flow CMR allows visualization and quantification of intracardiac flow components and calculation of phasic blood kinetic energy (KE) parameters but it is unknown whether these parameters are associated with cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)-assessed exercise capacity, which is a surrogate measure of survival in PAH. We compared 4D flow CMR parameters in PAH with healthy controls, and investigated the association of these parameters with RV remodelling, RV functional and CPET outcomes.

METHODS

PAH patients and healthy controls from two centers were prospectively enrolled to undergo on-site cine and 4D flow CMR, and CPET within one week. RV remodelling index was calculated as the ratio of RV to left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volumes (EDV). Phasic (peak systolic, average systolic, and peak E-wave) LV and RV blood flow KE indexed to EDV (KEIEDV) and ventricular LV and RV flow components (direct flow, retained inflow, delayed ejection flow, and residual volume) were calculated. Oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2) and minute ventilation (VE) were measured and recorded.

RESULTS

45 PAH patients (46 ± 11 years; 7 M) and 51 healthy subjects (46 ± 14 years; 17 M) with no significant differences in age and gender were analyzed. Compared with healthy controls, PAH had significantly lower median RV direct flow, RV delayed ejection flow, RV peak E-wave KEIEDV, peak VO2, and percentage (%) predicted peak VO2, while significantly higher median RV residual volume and VE/VCO2 slope. RV direct flow and RV residual volume were significantly associated with RV remodelling, function, peak VO2, % predicted peak VO2 and VE/VCO2 slope (all P < 0.01). Multiple linear regression analyses showed RV direct flow to be an independent marker of RV function, remodelling and exercise capacity.

CONCLUSION

In this 4D flow CMR and CPET study, RV direct flow provided incremental value over RVEF for discriminating adverse RV remodelling, impaired exercise capacity, and PAH with intermediate and high risk based on risk score. These data suggest that CMR with 4D flow CMR can provide comprehensive assessment of PAH severity, and may be used to monitor disease progression and therapeutic response.

Association of left ventricular flow energetics with remodeling after myocardial infarction: New hemodynamic insights for left ventricular remodeling

BACKGROUND

Myocardial infarction leads to complex changes in left ventricular (LV) hemodynamics. It remains unknown how four-dimensional acute changes in LV-cavity blood flow kinetic energy affects LV-remodeling.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In total, 69 revascularised ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients were enrolled. All patients underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) examination within 2 days of the index event and at 3-month. CMR examination included cine, late gadolinium enhancement, and whole-heart four-dimensional flow acquisitions. LV volume-function, infarct size (indexed to body surface area), microvascular obstruction, mitral inflow, and blood flow KEi (kinetic energy indexed to end-diastolic volume) characteristics were obtained. Adverse LV-remodeling was defined and categorized according to increase in LV end-diastolic volume of at least 10%, 15%, and 20%. Twenty-four patients (35%) developed at least 10%, 17 patients (25%) at least 15%, 11 patients (16%) at least 20% LV-remodeling. Demographics and clinical history were comparable between patients with/without LV-remodeling. In univariable regression-analysis, A-wave KEi was associated with at least 10%, 15%, and 20% LV-remodeling (p = 0.03, p = 0.02, p = 0.02, respectively), whereas infarct size only with at least 10% LV-remodeling (p = 0.02). In multivariable regression-analysis, A-wave KEi was identified as an independent marker for at least 10%, 15%, and 20% LV-remodeling (p = 0.09, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively), yet infarct size only for at least 10% LV-remodeling (p = 0.03).

CONCLUSION

In patients with STEMI, LV hemodynamic assessment by LV blood flow kinetic energetics demonstrates a significant inverse association with adverse LV-remodeling. Late-diastolic LV blood flow kinetic energetics early after acute MI was independently associated with adverse LV-remodeling.

Determining factors and parameterization of brake wear particle emission

Brake wear emission contributes to an increasingly significant proportion of vehicle-related particulate matter, but knowledge of its emission features and determining factors is still highly insufficient. Here, brake dynamometer experiments were conducted under controlled variables tests and real-world driving conditions to systematically investigate brake wear particle (BWP) emission. Compared to the decelerating process, the separating of pads and disc releases more BWPs, accounting for 47-76% of the total PM_2.5 mass. Particle number and mass distributions exhibit bimodal (< 0.01 µm and 0.8-1.2 µm) and unimodal (2-5 µm) patterns, respectively. Larger speed reduction exponentially amplifies BWP emission, and the significant enhancement of nanoparticles is proved to be related to the evaporation of organic constituents in the pads with threshold ranging from 170 °C to 270 °C. Emissions from front and rear brake assemblies don't agree with braking torque distribution, mainly attributive to the different braking pressures. A parameterization scheme for BWP emission based on kinetic energy loss is further established and proved to sufficiently predict the variation of BWP under real-world driving conditions. Being corrected by 1.8th power of the initial speed, the scheme improves the prediction.

Left ventricular four-dimensional blood flow distribution, energetics, and vorticity in chronic myocardial infarction patients with/without left ventricular thrombus

BACKGROUND

Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) formation is a frequent and serious complication of myocardial infarction (MI). How global LV flow characteristics are related to this phenomenon is yet uncertain. In this study, we investigated LV flow differences using 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) between chronic MI patients with LVT [MI-LVT(+)] and without LVT [MI-LVT(-)], and healthy controls.

METHODS

In this prospective cohort study, the 4D flow CMR data were acquired in 19 chronic MI patients (MI-LVT(+), n = 9 and MI-LVT(-), n = 10) and 9 age-matched controls. All included subjects were in sinus rhythm. The following LV flow parameters were obtained: LV flow components (direct, retained, delayed, residual), mean and peak kinetic energy (KE) values (indexed to instantaneous LV volume), mean and peak vorticity values, and diastolic vortex ring properties (position, orientation, shape).

RESULTS

The MI patients demonstrated a significantly larger amount of delayed and residual flow, and a smaller amount of direct flow compared to controls (p = 0.02, p = 0.03, and p < 0.001, respectively). The MI-LVT(+) patients demonstrated numerically increased residual flow and reduced retained and direct flow in comparison to MI-LVT(-) patients. Systolic mean and peak LV blood flow KE values were significantly lower in MI patients compared to controls (p = 0.04, p = 0.03, respectively). Overall, the mean and peak LV vorticity values were significantly lower in MI patients compared to controls. The mean and peak systolic vorticity at the basal level were significantly higher in MI-LVT(+) than in MI-LVT(-) patients (p < 0.01, for both). The vortex ring core during E-wave in MI-LVT(+) group was located in a less tilted orientation to the LV compared to MI-LVT(-) group (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Chronic MI patients with LVT express a different distribution of LV flow components, irregular vorticity vector fields, and altered diastolic vortex ring geometric properties as assessed by 4D flow CMR. Larger prospective studies are warranted to further evaluate the significance of these initial observations.

Ventricular flow analysis and its association with exertional capacity in repaired tetralogy of Fallot: 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance study

BACKGROUND

Four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows quantification of biventricular blood flow by flow components and kinetic energy (KE) analyses. However, it remains unclear whether 4D flow parameters can predict cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) as a clinical outcome in repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). Current study aimed to (1) compare 4D flow CMR parameters in rTOF with age- and gender-matched healthy controls, (2) investigate associations of 4D flow parameters with functional and volumetric right ventricular (RV) remodelling markers, and CPET outcome.

METHODS

Sixty-three rTOF patients (14 paediatric, 49 adult; 30 ± 15 years; 29 M) and 63 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (14 paediatric, 49 adult; 31 ± 15 years) were prospectively recruited at four centers. All underwent cine and 4D flow CMR, and all adults performed standardized CPET same day or within one week of CMR. RV remodelling index was calculated as the ratio of RV to left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volumes. Four flow components were analyzed: direct flow, retained inflow, delayed ejection flow and residual volume. Additionally, three phasic KE parameters normalized to end-diastolic volume (KEiEDV), were analyzed for both LV and RV: peak systolic, average systolic and peak E-wave.

RESULTS

In comparisons of rTOF vs. healthy controls, median LV retained inflow (18% vs. 16%, P = 0.005) and median peak E-wave KEiEDV (34.9 µJ/ml vs. 29.2 µJ/ml, P = 0.006) were higher in rTOF; median RV direct flow was lower in rTOF (25% vs. 35%, P < 0.001); median RV delayed ejection flow (21% vs. 17%, P < 0.001) and residual volume (39% vs. 31%, P < 0.001) were both greater in rTOF. RV KEiEDV parameters were all higher in rTOF than healthy controls (all P < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, RV direct flow was an independent predictor of RV function and CPET outcome. RV direct flow and RV peak E-wave KEiEDV were independent predictors of RV remodelling index.

CONCLUSIONS

In this multi-scanner multicenter 4D flow CMR study, reduced RV direct flow was independently associated with RV dysfunction, remodelling and, to a lesser extent, exercise intolerance in rTOF patients. This supports its utility as an imaging parameter for monitoring disease progression and therapeutic response in rTOF. Clinical Trial Registration https://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Intraventricular Vector Flow Imaging with Blood Speckle Tracking in Adults: Feasibility, Normal Physiology and Mechanisms in Healthy Volunteers

This study examines the feasibility of blood speckle tracking for vector flow imaging in healthy adults and describes the physiologic flow pattern and vortex formation in relation to the wall motion in the left ventricle. The study included 21 healthy volunteers and quantified and visualized flow patterns with high temporal resolution down to a depth of 10-12 cm without the use of contrast agents. Intraventricular flow seems to originate during the isovolumetric relaxation with a propagation of blood from base to apex. With the E-wave, rapid inflow and vortex formation occurred on both sides of the valve basally. During diastasis the flow gathers in a large vortex before the pattern from the E-wave repeats during the A-wave. In isovolumetric contraction, the flow again gathers in a large vortex that seems to facilitate the flow out in the aorta during systole. No signs of a persistent systolic vortex were visualized. The geometry of the left ventricle and the movement of the AV-plane is important in creating vortices that are favorable for the blood flow and facilitate outflow. The quantitative measurements are in concordance with these findings, but the clinical interpretation must be evaluated in future clinical studies.

The kinocardiograph for assessment of changes in haemodynamic load in patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

Aims

The kinocardiograph (KCG) is an unobtrusive device, consisting of a chest sensor, which records local thoracic vibrations produced in result of cardiac contraction and ejection of blood into the great vessels [seismocardiography (SCG)], and a lower back sensor, which records micromovements of the body in reaction to blood flowing through the vasculature [ballistocardiography (BCG)]. SCG and BCG signals are translated to the integral of cardiac kinetic energy (iK) and cardiac maximum power (Pmax), which might be promising metrics for future telemonitoring purposes in heart failure (HF). As a first step of validation, this study aimed to determine whether iK and Pmax are responsive to exercise‐induced changes in the haemodynamic load of the heart in HF patients.

Methods and results

Fifteen patients with stable HF with reduced ejection fraction performed a submaximal exercise protocol. KCG and cardiac ultrasound measurements were obtained both at rest and at submaximal exercise. BCG iK over the cardiac cycle (CC) increased significantly (0.0026 ± 0.0017 to 0.0052 ± 0.0061 mJ.s.; P = 0.01) during exercise, in contrast to a non‐significant increase in SCG iK CC. BCG Pmax CC increased significantly (0.92 ± 0.89 to 2.03 ± 1.95 mJ/s; P = 0.02), in contrast to a non‐significant increase in SCG Pmax CC. When analysing the systolic phase of the CC, similar patterns were found. Cardiac output (CO) ratio (i.e. CO exercise/CO rest) showed a moderate, significant correlation with BCG Pmax CC ratio (r = +0.65; P = 0.008) and with SCG Pmax CC ratio (r = +0.54; P = 0.04).

Conclusions

iK and Pmax measured with the KCG, preferentially using BCG, are responsive to changes in the haemodynamic load of the heart in HF patients. The combination of the BCG and SCG sensor might be of added value to fully understand changes in haemodynamics and to discriminate between an HF patient and a healthy individual.

Exercise-induced irregular right heart flow dynamics in adolescents and young adults born preterm

BACKGROUND

Preterm birth has been linked to an elevated risk of heart failure and cardiopulmonary disease later in life. With improved neonatal care and survival, most infants born preterm are now reaching adulthood. In this study, we used 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) coupled with an exercise challenge to assess the impact of preterm birth on right heart flow dynamics in otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults who were born preterm.

METHODS

Eleven young adults and 17 adolescents born preterm (< 32 weeks of gestation and < 1500 g birth weight) were compared to 11 young adult and 18 adolescent age-matched controls born at term. Stroke volume, cardiac output, and flow in the main pulmonary artery were quantified with 4D flow CMR. Kinetic energy and vorticity were measured in the right ventricle. All parameters were measured at rest and during exercise at a power corresponding to 70% VO2max for each subject. Multivariate linear regression was used to perform age-adjusted term-preterm comparisons.

RESULTS

With exercise, stroke volume increased 10 ± 21% in term controls and decreased 4 ± 18% in preterm born subjects (p = 0.007). This resulted in significantly reduced capacity to increase cardiac output in response to exercise stress for the preterm group (58 ± 26% increase in controls, 36 ± 27% increase in preterm, p = 0.004). Elevated kinetic energy (KEterm = 71 ± 22 nJ, KEpreterm = 87 ± 38 nJ, p = 0.03) and vorticity (ωterm = 79 ± 16 s-1, ωpreterm = 94 ± 32 s-1, p = 0.01) during diastole in the right ventricle (RV) suggested altered RV flow dynamics in the preterm subjects. Streamline visualizations showed altered structure to the diastolic filling vortices in those born preterm.

CONCLUSIONS

For the participants examined here, preterm birth appeared to result in altered right-heart flow dynamics as early as adolescence, especially during diastole. Future studies should evaluate whether the altered dynamics identified here evolves into cardiopulmonary disease later in life. Trial registration None.

Analysis of Turbulence Effects in a Patient-Specific Aorta with Aortic Valve Stenosis

Blood flow in the aorta is often assumed laminar, however aortic valve pathologies may induce transition to turbulence and our understanding of turbulence effects is incomplete. The aim of the study was to provide a detailed analysis of turbulence effects in aortic valve stenosis (AVS).

METHODS

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of flow through a patient-specific aorta with AVS was conducted. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and used for geometric reconstruction and patient-specific boundary conditions. Computed velocity field was compared with 4D flow MRI to check qualitative and quantitative consistency. The effect of turbulence was evaluated in terms of fluctuating kinetic energy, turbulence-related wall shear stress (WSS) and energy loss.

RESULTS

Our analysis suggested that turbulence was induced by a combination of a high velocity jet impinging on the arterial wall and a dilated ascending aorta which provided sufficient space for turbulence to develop. Turbulent WSS contributed to 40% of the total WSS in the ascending aorta and 38% in the entire aorta. Viscous and turbulent irreversible energy losses accounted for 3.9 and 2.7% of the total stroke work, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates the importance of turbulence in assessing aortic haemodynamics in a patient with AVS. Neglecting the turbulent contribution to WSS could potentially result in a significant underestimation of the total WSS. Further work is warranted to extend the analysis to more AVS cases and patients with other aortic valve diseases.

Impact of age, sex and ethnicity on intra-cardiac flow components and left ventricular kinetic energy derived from 4D flow CMR

BACKGROUND

Four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR) allows quantification of left ventricular (LV) blood flow. We aimed to 1) establish reference ranges for 4D flow CMR-derived LV relative flow components and kinetic energy parameters indexed to end-diastolic volume (KEi_EDV) among healthy Asian subjects, 2) assess effects of age and sex on these parameters, and 3) compare these parameters between Asian and Caucasian subjects.

METHODS

74 healthy Asian subjects underwent cine and 4D flow CMR. Relative flow components (direct flow, retained inflow, delayed ejection flow, residual volume) and multiple phasic KEi_EDV (LV global, peak systolic, systolic, diastolic, peak E-wave, peak A-wave) were analyzed. Sex- and age-specific reference ranges were reported.

RESULTS

Relative flow components and systolic phase KEi_EDV did not vary with age. Women had higher retained inflow and peak E-wave KEi_EDV, lower residual volume, peak systolic and systolic KEi_EDV than men. Peak A-wave KEi_EDV increased significantly (r = 0.474) whereas peak E-wave KEi_EDV (r = -0.458) and E-wave/A-wave ratio (r = -0.528) decreased with age. A sub-population (n = 44) was compared with 44 sex- and age-matched Caucasian subjects: no significant group differences were observed for all 4D flow CMR parameters.

CONCLUSION

Asian sex- and age-specific 4D flow CMR reference ranges were established. Sex differences in retained inflow, residual volume, peak systolic, systolic KEi_EDV and peak E-wave KEi_EDV were observed. Ageing influenced diastolic KEi_EDV but not systolic phase KEi_EDV or relative flow components. All studied parameters were similar between sex- and age-matched Asian and Caucasian subjects, implying generalizability of the ranges.

The role of the pulp-froth interface on particle detachment and selectivity

The region between the pulp and the froth also known as pulp/froth interface in mineral flotation processes separates the pulp from the froth. Various researchers suggest particle detachment occurs around this region significantly affecting mineral recovery and grade. One of the causes pointed out is sudden deceleration of bubble-particle aggregate upon collision with the interface while another theory suggests detachment to be caused by bubble coalescence. A possible cause of divergence in views may be in the different methods of investigation employed. Though, more than several researchers indicate that detachment occurs, it is not conclusive whether kinetic energy changes or bubble coalesce or a combination of the two is responsible for detachment if any. Thus, this review examines and presents work that has been done on the role of the pulp-froth interface on particle detachment and selectivity. The review also considers the behaviour of a bubble with various interface as found in literature with a view of inferring the dominant cause of detachment at the interface.

Modelling injury severity of bicyclists in bicycle-car crashes at intersections

Bicyclists are vulnerable road users as they are not protected during a road collision. Although numerous studies have been conducted to understand the parameters contributing to bicyclist's injury severity, most of these studies have focused on the relationship between crash severity and road, environmental, vehicle and human demographic parameters. No study has been found that investigated the relationship of bicyclist's injury severity with speed and mass of both vehicles, as well as other crash dynamics aspects. This study developed a modelling framework to investigate the effect of variables such as speed, mass and crash angle on bicyclist's injury severity in bicycle-car crashes at intersections. A combination of Newtonian Mechanics and statistical analysis was utilised to develop this theory. This modelling process followed a two-step approach. In the first step, Newtonian Mechanics was used to develop numerical models to estimate the impact force applied to the bicyclist. Variables affecting the associated impact forces were then identified. In the second step, a mixed binary logistic regression model was developed to estimate injury severity of a bicycle-vehicle crash as a function of mass of both vehicles, speed of both vehicles before and after the crash, restraint use and age of bicyclist. Transport Accident Commission (TAC) validated crash data was used to develop the model. The results of the numerical models showed that kinetic energy of the car before crash and kinetic energy of the bicycle after crash are important parameters affecting the injury severity of the cyclist in bicycle-vehicle crashes. The results of the mixed binary logistic regression model confirmed that the addition of kinetic energy of the car before crash and the kinetic energy of the bicycle post-crash had a statistically significant effect on injury severity of bicyclist. The results further showed that older bicyclists were involved in higher severity crashes and helmet-wearing reduced the injury severity of the bicyclist.

Quantifying accident risk and severity due to speed from the reaction point to the critical conflict in fatal motorcycle accidents

In fatal road vehicle accidents motorcycles are overrepresented per vehicle kilometre travelled. Fatal accidents involving motorcycles contain mode specific characteristics, and in common with fatal accidents involving all road users, speed typically presents as a significant contributory factor. The aim of the present study is to provide quantitative estimates for the contribution of speed in situations commencing from the reaction location to the safety critical event involving a motorcyclist and resulting in a fatal accident. The contribution of speed to the resulting accident risk and accident severity is considered from this reaction point. A speed-squared versus stopping distance domain, termed the severity-risk space, is examined to determine the accident measures. The defined accident measures, namely, accident risk, accident severity and accident severity risk are calculated for sixteen fatal accidents from a police dataset of recent UK motorcycle accidents. The estimates of the defined measures are provided in terms relative to values estimated for the vehicle travelling at the speed limit at the safety critical event. The relative accident risk in response to a safety critical situation shows a partial speed dependent reaction phase and a speed-squared dependent braking phase and ranges from 1.3 to 2.8. The speed-squared dependent accident severity measure ranges from 1.4 to 7.3 at pre-impact speeds. The relative accident severity risk shows speed squared to speed cubed dependency components during the reaction phase and a speed to the power of four dependent braking phase and ranges from 2.3 to 22.8. In eight cases the collision would have been avoided had the motorcyclist been travelling at the speed limit at the critical point and in the other eight cases the relative accident severity at impact ranged from 1.4 to 17.2. The speed-squared versus stopping distance domain provides an informative parameter space for considering the accident risk and accident severity dimensions of road user accidents.

A new approach to estimate atomic energies

A new approach to estimate atomic energies is introduced. The method is based on utilization of experimental ionization energies as well as conversion of "n-electron atomic systems" to n "one-electron systems." Sample detail calculations are presented with typical graphs to show the distribution of different types of energy within an atom. The breakdown of atomic energies into kinetic, electron-nucleus attraction, and electron-electron repulsion is shown within an atom as well the total of energies of each type for elements. Then in a following step, the variations in kinetic, electron-electron, and electron-nucleus interaction energies of electrons as evidence for atomic shell changes are presented. Furthermore, the article overviews the spatial gaps between orbitals as an added evidence for existence of electronic shells. The findings in this article have significant implications for the structure of atoms and the layout of periodic table. 4-D flow magnetic-resonance-imaging-derived energetic biomarkers are abnormal in children with repaired tetralogy of Fallot and associated with disease severity

BACKGROUND

Cardiac MRI plays a central role in monitoring children with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) for long-term complications. Current risk assessment is based on volumetric and functional parameters that measure late expression of underlying physiological changes. Emerging 4-D flow MRI techniques promise new insights.

OBJECTIVE

To assess whether 4-D flow MRI-derived measures of blood kinetic energy (1) differentiate children and young adults with TOF from controls and (2) are associated with disease severity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Pediatric patients post TOF repair (n=21) and controls (n=24) underwent 4-D flow MRI for assessment of time-resolved 3-D blood flow. Data analysis included 3-D segmentation of the right ventricle (RV) and pulmonary artery (PA), with calculation of peak systolic and diastolic kinetic energy (KE) maps. Total KE_RV and KE_PA were determined from the sum of the KE of all voxels within the respective time-resolved segmentations.

RESULTS

KE_PA was increased in children post TOF vs. controls across the cardiac cycle, with median 12.5 (interquartile range [IQR] 10.3) mJ/m² vs. 8.2 (4.3) mJ/m², P<0.01 in systole; and 2.3 (2.7) mJ/m² vs. 1.4 (0.9) mJ/m², P<0.01 in diastole. Diastolic KE_PA correlated with systolic KE_PA (R² 0.41, P<0.01) and with pulmonary regurgitation fraction (R² 0.65, P<0.01). Diastolic KE_RV showed similar relationships, denoting increasing KE with higher cardiac outputs and increased right heart volume loading. Diastolic KE_RV and KE_PA increased with RV end-diastolic volume in a non-linear relationship (R² 0.33, P<0.01 and R² 0.50, P<0.01 respectively), with an inflection point near 120 mL/m².

CONCLUSION

Four-dimensional flow-derived KE is abnormal in pediatric patients post TOF repair compared to controls and has a direct, non-linear relationship with traditional measures of disease progression. Future longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate utility for early outcome prediction in TOF.

The meaning of blood pressure

Measurement of arterial pressure is one of the most basic elements of patient management. Arterial pressure is determined by the volume ejected by the heart into the arteries, the elastance of the walls of the arteries, and the rate at which the blood flows out of the arteries. This review will discuss the three forces that determine the pressure in a vessel: elastic, kinetic, and gravitational energy. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of the distribution of arterial resistances, the elastance of the walls of the large vessels, and critical closing pressures in small arteries and arterioles. Regulation of arterial pressure occurs through changes in cardiac output and changes in vascular resistance, but these two controlled variables can sometimes be in conflict.

Waddle and shuffle: gait alterations associated with domestication in turkeys

Domestication has altered turkey morphology by artificially selecting for increased muscle mass and breast meat. Artificial selection has resulted in birds that weigh up to 3 times more than their wild counterparts, with relatively little change in the length of their bones and limbs. Considering these structural changes, it seems probable that domestic turkey locomotor kinematics and kinetics would also be altered. To examine the locomotor dynamics of wild and domestic turkeys, we had both strains walk down a runway with a force plate at the center to measure their ground reaction forces and gait parameters. The location of their center of mass was also quantified using a force plate and bi-planar x-ray and found to be further anterior in the domestic strain. The domestic turkeys locomoted across a lower range of speeds (0.25-1.64 ms^-1) than the wild turkeys (0.26-3.26 ms^-1) and increased their stride frequency at a higher rate. They also displayed large lateral oscillations, i.e. waddling, during walking that translated into relatively high medio-lateral ground reaction forces and lateral kinetic energy (3.5 times higher than that of wild turkeys). The results indicate that domestic turkey locomotion is not simply a slowed down version of wild turkey locomotion. The changes in gait observed are similar to the shuffling gait present in some human populations, such as Parkinson's patients, which serves to increase stability. The domestic turkey's increased body mass and more anterior center of mass position may require these kinematic and kinetic gait differences.

Test-retest variability of left ventricular 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance measurements in healthy subjects

BACKGROUND

Quantification and visualisation of left ventricular (LV) blood flow is afforded by three-dimensional, time resolved phase contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR 4D flow). However, few data exist upon the repeatability and variability of these parameters in a healthy population. We aimed to assess the repeatability and variability over time of LV 4D CMR flow measurements.

METHODS

Forty five controls underwent CMR 4D flow data acquisition. Of these, 10 underwent a second scan within the same visit (scan-rescan), 25 returned for a second visit (interval scan; median interval 52 days, IQR 28-57 days). The LV-end diastolic volume (EDV) was divided into four flow components: 1) Direct flow: inflow that passes directly to ejection; 2) Retained inflow: inflow that enters and resides within the LV; 3) Delayed ejection flow: starts within the LV and is ejected and 4) Residual volume: blood that resides within the LV for > 2 cardiac cycles. Each flow components' volume was related to the EDV (volume-ratio). The kinetic energy at end-diastole (ED) was measured and divided by the components' volume.

RESULTS

The dominant flow component in all 45 controls was the direct flow (volume ratio 38 ± 4%) followed by the residual volume (30 ± 4%), then delayed ejection flow (16 ± 3%) and retained inflow (16 ± 4%). The kinetic energy at ED for each component was direct flow (7.8 ± 3.0 microJ/ml), retained inflow (4.1 ± 2.0 microJ/ml), delayed ejection flow (6.3 ± 2.3 microJ/ml) and the residual volume (1.2 ± 0.5 microJ/ml). The coefficients of variation for the scan-rescan ranged from 2.5%-9.2% for the flow components' volume ratio and between 13.5%-17.7% for the kinetic energy. The interval scan results showed higher coefficients of variation with values from 6.2-16.1% for the flow components' volume ratio and 16.9-29.0% for the kinetic energy of the flow components.

CONCLUSION

LV flow components' volume and their associated kinetic energy values are repeatable and stable within a population over time. However, the variability of these measurements in individuals over time is greater than can be attributed to sources of error in the data acquisition and analysis, suggesting that additional physiological factors may influence LV flow measurements.

Evaluation of the kinetic energy of the torso by magneto-inertial measurement unit during the sit-to-stand movement

Sit-to-stand tests are used in geriatrics as a qualitative issue in order to evaluate motor control and stability. In terms of measured indicators, it is traditionally the duration of the task that is reported, however it appears that the use of the kinetic energy as a new quantitative criterion allows getting a better understanding of musculoskeletal deficits of elderly subjects. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility to obtain the measure of kinetic energy using magneto-inertial measurement units (MIMU) during sit-to-stand movements at various paces. 26 healthy subjects contributed to this investigation. Measured results were compared to a marker-based motion capture using the correlation coefficient and the normalized root mean square error (nRMSE). nRMSE were below 10% and correlation coefficients were over 0.97. In addition, errors on the mean kinetic energy were also investigated using Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement (0.63 J-0.77 J), RMSE (0.29 J-0.38 J) and correlation coefficient (0.96-0.98). The results obtained highlighted that the method based on MIMU data could be an alternative to optoelectronic data acquisition to assess the kinetic energy of the torso during the sit-to-stand test, suggesting this method as being a promising alternative to determine kinetic energy during the sit-to-stand movement.

A Novel Idea to Improve Cardiac Output of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices by Optimizing Kinetic Energy Transfer Available in Forward Moving Aortic Blood Flow

Mechanical circulatory support devices (MCSDs) have gained widespread clinical acceptance as an effective heart failure (HF) therapy. The concept of harnessing the kinetic energy (KE) available in the forward aortic flow (AOF) is proposed as a novel control strategy to further increase the cardiac output (CO) provided by MCSDs. A complete mathematical development of the proposed theory and its application to an example MCSDs (two-segment extra-aortic cuff) are presented. To achieve improved device performance and physiologic benefit, the example MCSD timing is regulated to maximize the forward AOF KE and minimize retrograde flow. The proof-of-concept was tested to provide support with and without KE control in a computational HF model over a wide range of HF test conditions. The simulation predicted increased stroke volume (SV) by 20% (9 mL), CO by 23% (0.50 L/min), left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) by 23%, and diastolic coronary artery flow (CAF) by 55% (3 mL) in severe HF at a heart rate (HR) of 60 beats per minute (BPM) during counterpulsation (CP) support with KE control. The proposed KE control concept may improve performance of other MCSDs to further enhance their potential clinical benefits, which warrants further investigation. The next step is to investigate various assist technologies and determine where this concept is best applied. Then bench-test the combination of kinetic energy optimization and its associated technology choice and finally test the combination in animals.

Energy-dependent expansion of .177 caliber hollow-point air gun projectiles

Amongst hundreds of different projectiles for air guns available on the market, hollow-point air gun pellets are of special interest. These pellets are characterized by a tip or a hollowed-out shape in their tip which, when fired, makes the projectiles expand to an increased diameter upon entering the target medium. This results in an increase in release of energy which, in turn, has the potential to cause more serious injuries than non-hollow-point projectiles. To the best of the authors' knowledge, reliable data on the terminal ballistic features of hollow-point air gun projectiles compared to standard diabolo pellets have not yet been published in the forensic literature. The terminal ballistic performance (energy-dependent expansion and penetration) of four different types of .177 caliber hollow-point pellets discharged at kinetic energy levels from approximately 3 J up to 30 J into water, ordnance gelatin, and ordnance gelatin covered with natural chamois as a skin simulant was the subject of this investigation. Energy-dependent expansion of the tested hollow-point pellets was observed after being shot into all investigated target media. While some hollow-point pellets require a minimum kinetic energy of approximately 10 J for sufficient expansion, there are also hollow-point pellets which expand at kinetic energy levels of less than 5 J. The ratio of expansion (RE, calculated by the cross-sectional area (A) after impact divided by the cross-sectional area (A ₀) of the undeformed pellet) of hollow-point air gun pellets reached values up of to 2.2. The extent of expansion relates to the kinetic energy of the projectile with a peak for pellet expansion at the 15 to 20 J range. To conclude, this work demonstrates that the hollow-point principle, i.e., the design-related enlargement of the projectiles' frontal area upon impact into a medium, does work in air guns as claimed by the manufacturers.

Vector flow mapping analysis of left ventricular energetic performance in healthy adult volunteers

BACKGROUND

Vector flow mapping, a novel flow visualization echocardiographic technology, is increasing in popularity. Energy loss reference values for children have been established using vector flow mapping, but those for adults have not yet been provided. We aimed to establish reference values in healthy adults for energy loss, kinetic energy in the left ventricular outflow tract, and the energetic performance index (defined as the ratio of kinetic energy to energy loss over one cardiac cycle).

METHODS

Transthoracic echocardiography was performed in fifty healthy volunteers, and the stored images were analyzed to calculate energy loss, kinetic energy, and energetic performance index and obtain ranges of reference values for these.

RESULTS

Mean energy loss over one cardiac cycle ranged from 10.1 to 59.1 mW/m (mean ± SD, 27.53 ± 13.46 mW/m), with a reference range of 10.32 ~ 58.63 mW/m. Mean systolic energy loss ranged from 8.5 to 80.1 (23.52 ± 14.53) mW/m, with a reference range of 8.86 ~ 77.30 mW/m. Mean diastolic energy loss ranged from 7.9 to 86 (30.41 ± 16.93) mW/m, with a reference range of 8.31 ~ 80.36 mW/m. Mean kinetic energy in the left ventricular outflow tract over one cardiac cycle ranged from 200 to 851.6 (449.74 ± 177.51) mW/m with a reference range of 203.16 ~ 833.15 mW/m. The energetic performance index ranged from 5.3 to 37.6 (18.48 ± 7.74), with a reference range of 5.80 ~ 36.67.

CONCLUSIONS

Energy loss, kinetic energy, and energetic performance index reference values were defined using vector flow mapping. These reference values enable the assessment of various cardiac conditions in any clinical situation.

Decreased Diastolic Ventricular Kinetic Energy in Young Patients with Fontan Circulation Demonstrated by Four-Dimensional Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables quantification of kinetic energy (KE) in intraventricular blood flow. This provides a novel way to understand the cardiovascular physiology of the Fontan circulation. In this study, we aimed to quantify the KE in functional single ventricles. 4D flow MRI was acquired in eleven patients with Fontan circulation (median age 12 years, range 3-29) and eight healthy volunteers (median age 26 years, range 23-36). Follow-up MRI after surgical or percutaneous intervention was performed in 3 patients. Intraventricular KE was calculated throughout the cardiac cycle and indexed to stroke volume (SV). The systolic/diastolic ratio of KE in Fontan patients was similar to the ratio of the controls' left ventricle (LV) or right ventricle (RV) depending on the patients' ventricular morphology (Cohen´s κ = 1.0). Peak systolic KE/SV did not differ in patients compared to the LV in controls (0.016 ± 0.006 mJ/ml vs 0.020 ± 0.004 mJ/ml, p = 0.09). Peak diastolic KE/SV in Fontan patients was lower than in the LV of the control group (0.028 ± 0.010 mJ/ml vs 0.057 ± 0.011 mJ/ml, p < 0.0001). The KE during diastole showed a plateau in patients with aortopulmonary collaterals. This is to our knowledge the first study that quantifies the intraventricular KE of Fontan patients. KE is dependent on the morphology of the ventricle, and diastolic KE indexed to SV in patients is decreased compared to controls. The lower KE in Fontan patients may be a result of impaired ventricular filling.

Advanced Analysis Techniques for Intra-cardiac Flow Evaluation from 4D Flow MRI

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW

Time-resolved 3D velocity-encoded MR imaging with velocity encoding in three directions (4D Flow) has emerged as a novel MR acquisition technique providing detailed information on flow in the cardiovascular system. In contrast to other clinically available imaging techniques such as echo-Doppler, 4D Flow MRI provides the 3D Flow velocity field within a volumetric region of interest over the cardiac cycle. This work reviews the most recent advances in the development and application of dedicated image analysis techniques for the assessment of intra-cardiac flow features from 4D Flow MRI.

RECENT FINDINGS

Novel image analysis techniques have been developed for extraction of relevant intra-cardiac flow features from 4D Flow MRI, which have been successfully applied in various patient cohorts and volunteer studies. Disturbed flow patterns have been linked with valvular abnormalities and ventricular dysfunction. Recent technical advances have resulted in reduced scan times and improvements in image quality, increasing the potential clinical applicability of 4D Flow MRI.

SUMMARY

4D Flow MRI provides unique capabilities for 3D visualization and quantification of intra-cardiac blood flow. Contemporary knowledge on 4D Flow MRI shows promise for further exploration of the potential use of the technique in research and clinical applications.

A patterned abrasion caused by the impact of a cartridge case may simulate an atypical muzzle imprint mark

In contact shots, the muzzle imprint is an informative finding associated with the entrance wound. It typically mirrors the constructional components being in line with the muzzle or just behind. Under special conditions, other patterned skin marks located near a gunshot entrance wound may give the impression to be part of the muzzle imprint. A potential mechanism causing a patterned pressure abrasion in close proximity to the bullet entrance site is demonstrated on the basis of a suicidal shot to the temple. The skin lesion in question appeared as a ring-shaped excoriation with a diameter corresponding to that of the cartridge case. Two hypotheses concerning the causative mechanism were investigated by test shots: - After being ejected, the cartridge case ricocheted inside a confined space (car cabin in the particular case) and secondarily hit the skin near the gunshot entrance wound. - The ejection of the cartridge case failed so that the case became stuck in the ejection port and its mouth contacted the skin when the body collapsed after being hit.

Hydrodynamics and energy-saving swimming techniques of Pacific bluefin tuna

Weihs theoretically revealed that during the movement of fish with negative buoyancy, more kinetic energy is saved in the glide and upward (GAU) swimming mode than in the continuous horizontal swimming mode. Because kinetic energy saving depends on dynamic parameters such as the drag and lift of the body, the effects of variations in these parameters on energy saving for different species remain unknown. Here, the kinetic energy saving of Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT), Thunnus orientalis, exhibiting the GAU swimming mode was investigated. The dynamic properties of PBT were estimated by carrying out CFD analysis. The CFD model was produced by using a three-dimensional laser surface profiler, and the model was controlled such that it exhibited swimming motion similar to that of a live PBT swimming in a flume tank. The drag generated by tail beating, which significantly affects the kinetic energy during motion, was twice that generated in the glide mode. The faster the upward swimming speed, the lesser is the kinetic energy saving; therefore, when the upward swimming speed is more than twice the glide speed, there is no gain in the GAU mode. However, when SMR (Standard Metabolic Rate) is considered, if the energy based on SMR is assumed to be 30% of the total energy spent during motion, the most efficient upward swimming speed is 1.4 times the glide speed. The GAU swimming mode of PBT leads to energy saving during motion, and the upward swimming speed and the lift force produced by the pectoral fins for the most efficient drive are unique for different species of different sizes.

The effects of kinetic energy on concentric and eccentric isokinetic work

This investigation examined inertial effects on work output during isokinetic concentric knee extension and eccentric knee flexion. Total work (Wtotal) included work due to kinetic energy (Wkin), with respect to gravity (Wgrav), and against the dynamometer (Wdyn). Eighteen resistance-trained participants (9 males, 9 females) performed maximal voluntary concentric (90, 150, 210, 270 deg/s) and eccentric (-150, -90, -30 deg/s) actions with the dominant leg. Differences between work measurement type (WMT), i.e., gravity-corrected work and Wtotal, were assessed. ANOVA (2 WMT x 2 mode x 2 gender x 4 speed) revealed significant main effects (p < 0. 05) for both factors concentrically but only for WMT eccentrically. It was concluded that the effect of kinetic energy during isokinetic leg extension may elicit differences in measurement where the associated error (Kerr) significantly increases with increasing velocity concentrically and decreases eccentrically.
