Helping a Patient With a Pre-Existing Mental Health Condition Cope With Depression and COVID-19 Using the Neuman Systems Model: A Single Intrinsic Case Study

Nursing theories and conceptual models shape nursing knowledge. This study applied the philosophical and theoretical basis of the Neuman Systems Model, which focuses on the use of primary, secondary, and tertiary nursing prevention for retention, attainment, and maintenance of patient system wellness, to a patient with pre-existing mental health conditions struggling to cope with depression and COVID-19 in a dedicated COVID-19 hospital in an urban area of Iran. The single intrinsic case study design used interviews, nursing observations, and document analysis to evaluate environmental factors and intra-, inter-, and extra-personal stressors. An advanced, outcome-oriented nursing care plan was developed.

Neuman Systems Model With Nurse-Led Interprofessional Collaborative Practice

The Neuman Systems Model was developed to create a structure to depict nursing clients as complex systems, in constant energy exchange with their environments, comprised of multiple interrelated parts. It has been widely used in practice, education, research, and administration. An analysis of the theory, based upon Meleis' methods, was conducted. The theory has high utility and a large circle of contagiousness despite its complexity, lack of teleology, and level of abstractness. Based upon this analysis, a new model entitled the Neuman Systems Model Perspective of Nurse-Led Interprofessional Collaborative Practice has been created to provide a framework for the care of community-dwelling older adults. As a first step in its development, this new model will be used to guide a mixed-methods study evaluating an interprofessional collaborative practice intervention for community-dwelling older adults.

Thoughts About Social Issues: A Neuman Systems Model Perspective

The Neuman systems model includes social issues as a client system of interest. The other client systems of this conceptual model of nursing are individuals, families, other groups, and communities, about which exists a considerable amount of literature. However, social issues as a client system have not yet been defined or described, nor has any application of this client system been published. This essay is a discussion of the meaning of social issues as a client system from the perspective of the Neuman systems model, and offers examples from the literature, from the results of a survey of Neuman systems model trustees, including Betty Neuman, and from dialogue with participants at the 15th Biennial Neuman systems model symposium. Emotional Eating Mediates the Relationship Between Role Stress and Obesity in Clergy

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between role stress, emotional eating, and obesity in clergy. A random sample of United States Lutheran Church Missouri Synod clergy who met the study criteria (N = 430), response rate 38%, completed the Role Stress and Emotional Eating Behavior Scales, and self-reported height and weight for Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation. Obesity was high (81.4% overweight/obese, 36.7% obese), and emotional eating partially mediated the relationship between role stress and obesity. This study tested relations of the Neuman Systems Model.

Shift worked, quality of sleep, and elevated body mass index in pediatric nurses

Using the Neuman Systems Model framework, the relationship between shift worked, quality of sleep, and body mass index (BMI) was explored in nurses working at least 8 hours per shift on units providing 24-hour care at a Magnet recognized, Midwestern free-standing pediatric hospital. Electronic surveys collected demographic data and the Pittsburgh Quality of Sleep Index (PSQI) measured sleep quality. Sleep quality was not significantly correlated to elevated BMI >30. Night shift participants' reported fairly bad to very bad sleep quality scores at higher rates than day shift participants. Study findings will inform nurses and organizations concerned with maintaining a healthy workforce.
