Major, minor and trace element concentrations in the muscle and liver of a pregnant female Pacific sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon longurio) and its embryos

The Pacific sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon longurio is an abundant shark consumed by human population in Mexico. This study aimed to determine and compare the concentrations of thirteen essential elements (K, S, P, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Se, Cu, Mn, Cr and Co) and eleven non-essential elements (As, Sr, Cd, V, Li, U, Tl, Ag, Sn, Sb and Pb) in the muscle and liver of a pregnant female, fished near the copper mine of Santa Rosalía, and their respective embryos. Major, minor and trace (essential and non-essential) elements were transferred during gestation to embryos. All major elements analyzed had significantly higher concentrations in embryos liver than the pregnant female, except for magnesium. Higher concentrations in embryo tissues than the pregnant female tissues were found for the non-essential trace elements of strontium, lithium, thallium and silver, which indicate an easy maternal transfer of these non-essential elements.

Tissue dynamics of potential toxic elements in the Pacific hake (Merluccius productus): distribution and the public health risk assessment

This study aimed to establish the distribution of As, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the main tissues (muscle, liver, gonads, and gills) of the Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) from the northern Gulf of California to establish baseline bioavailability levels in the northern stock. The results for Pb and Cd were the lowest in the studied tissues (Pb < 0.005 mg kg^-1 in the liver and gonads and 1.43 mg kg^-1 for Cd in the liver), followed by levels of Cu and As (muscle > liver > gonads > gills) and Zn with the most abundant levels in all the tissues. The sex of the organisms was not a factor that influenced the bioaccumulation and distribution of the potential toxic elements (PTEs) nor total length, except for As in gills and Cd in muscle and the liver. Important interactions among Zn and non-essential elements were established. The Pacific hake intake of PTEs was probably through the diet via bioaccumulation of the elements in their prey and less by pollution of the water column. In the muscle, a major distribution and storage of As, Zn, and Pb were observed, but in the liver, higher loads were from Cd and Cu. The maximum tolerable weekly intake must be very high to be at health risk for the essential elements and Cd. However, the population might be at risk for Pb and As consumption if more than 124 g of M. productus in adults and 35 g in children are consumed per week. Further investigations are required to understand the dynamics of PTEs in M. productus as it could be proposed as a biomonitor species.

Bioaccumulation of cd and hg in Muscle of Juvenile Pacific Sharpnose Shark Rhizoprionodon longurio from the SE Gulf of California

In this study, the concentrations of Cd and Hg were measured in muscle of juvenile individuals at an importan fishing ground in southeastern Gulf of California to assess the health risk to human consumers considering elemental levels and rate of shark consumption in NW Mexico. Twenty-eight individuals were sampled in September 2019. Quantification of Hg was made by cold vapor-atomic absorption spectrophotometry, analyses of Cd were made by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In general, average Hg (1.27 µg g^-1 dry weight) concentrations were higher than Cd (0.059). In comparison to results of Cd and Hg in muscle of several species of genus Rhizoprionodon sp., our reported concentrations were comparable. Maximum permissible limits (Cd 0.5 and Hg 0.5 µg g^-1 wet weight) in fish products for human consumption were not exceeded. Health risk assessment to shark consumers indicated that Hg is of more concern than Cd but no hazards exist.

Investigation of carbonate addition on risk element concentrations in various teas

Healthy nutrition requires to notice risk element content of daily ingested foods and beverages. Several tea types are frequently consumed beverages in daily routine and social situations. Carbonate, although it is not in the natural ingredients of tea, can be added to maintain more brew. Also it gives brilliant red colour while reducing the brewing cost. For this respect, in this study, carbonate added infusions of some black teas (black, earl grey and green tea), herbal teas (fennel, mint and sage tea) and fruit teas (apple, lemon and rosehip) was investigated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) for the determination of carbonate addition to the risk element (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Mo, Pb, Sb and Ti) contents of teas. Also, the microwave digestion analysis applied by dissolving tea powders in acid solution was conducted in order to investigate how much risk element transfer to the brew. Prior to microwave digestion process, the total risk element contents of the tea grains were determined by again ICP-OES. Furthermore, health risk assessment studies including non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were conducted. According to the health risk assessment results of 200 mL daily consumed teas, hazard index (HI) was found less than 1 and target carcinogenic risk (TCR) was determined as less than 1 × 10-4 which shows all selected tea samples are in the low risk group.

Dietary Exposure to Essential and Non-essential Elements During Infants' First Year of Life in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study

Even the low levels of non-essential elements exposure common in the US may have health consequences especially early in life. However, little is known about the infant's dynamic exposure to essential and non-essential elements. This study aims to evaluate exposure to essential and non-essential elements during infants' first year of life and to explore the association between the exposure and rice consumption. Paired urine samples from infants enrolled in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study (NHBCS) were collected at approximately 6 weeks (exclusively breastfed) and at 1 year of age after weaning (n = 187). A further independent subgroup of NHBCS infants with details about rice consumption at 1 year of age also was included (n = 147). Urinary concentrations of 8 essential (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Se) and 9 non-essential (Al, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, V, and U) elements were determined as a measure of exposure. Several essential (Co, Fe, Mo, Ni, and Se) and non-essential (Al, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, and V) elements had higher concentrations at 1 year than at 6 weeks of age. The highest increases were for urinary As and Mo with median concentrations of 0.20 and 1.02 µg/L at 6 weeks and 2.31 and 45.36 µg/L at 1 year of age, respectively. At 1 year of age, As and Mo urine concentrations were related to rice consumption. Further efforts are necessary to minimize exposure to non-essential elements while retaining essential elements to protect and promote children's health.

Trace elements, peripheral blood film, and gene expression status in adolescents living near an industrial area in the Colombian Caribbean Coastline

BACKGROUND

Trace elements comprise both nutritionally essential and non-essential, and their presence in organisms plays important role in human health.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of trace elements, together with cellular and molecular biomarkers, in adolescents from Tierrabomba Island, a Caribbean community located near an industrial area, comparing them with a group living in San Onofre, a reference community.

METHODS

Hair and blood samples were obtained from 238 individuals aged 11-18 years old, 131 from Tierrabomba Island and 107 from San Onofre. Trace elements were quantified in hair using ICP-MS. The hematological evaluation was done by peripheral blood smears, and gene expression analysis was carried out through RT-PCR.

RESULTS

Thirteen elements were analyzed; eight showed significant differences between sites. In Tierrabomba, arsenic (As) and tungsten (W) registered mean values greater than in San Onofre. In contrast, in the reference site, average values for boron (B), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), yttrium (Y), tin (Sn), and barium (Ba) were greater. The peripheral blood film showed differences between populations. Mean lymphocyte percentage was higher in the Island, while eosinophil and monocyte percentages displayed greater means in San Onofre. Some correlations between trace elements and hematological parameters were found, mainly with platelets in Tierrabomba. This trend remained even when partial correlation coefficients were adjusted for age. Levels of gene expression of metallothionein 1X (MT1X) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) registered significant differences between sites, being greater in Tierrabomba. Negative correlations between SOD and As were observed in both sampling sites. Discriminant analysis suggested sampling locations could be differentiated by Zn, Mo, Ba, and MT1X levels.

SIGNIFICANCE

Trace elements and the relative gene expression associated with metal exposure are critical exposure biomarkers for coastal communities.

Aquaculture contributes to the global animal protein supply and the prevention of malnutrition and diet-related diseases (FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations); Fiorella et al., 2021). In particular, fish is a significant source of animal protein, fatty acids (e.g., docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid), vitamins, and essential trace elements in the human diet. Nonetheless, fish bioaccumulates metals from their diet and habitat. This data article includes information on the concentrations of 4 essential and 4 non-essential trace elements in cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the human health risks through fish consumption in the adult population. Concentrations of four essential (Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn) and four non-essential (As, Cd, Pb, and Hg) elements were quantified in ninety-one O. mykiss samples from an in-door production system. Total mercury (THg) levels in samples were determined by AAS, and other analyzed trace elements were measured by ICP-OES after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The highest concentrations of metals/metalloid (mg/kg wet weight) in fish muscle were Cr (0.44), Cu (4.21), Ni (1.01), As (0.47), Cd (0.045), Pb (0.65), THg (0.029), and Zn (6.21). The average concentrations of Cr and Pb exceeded their respective maximum limit. In most cases, median metal concentrations significantly (p < 0.05) differed across the fish size groups (small: 264–295 mm; medium: 300–395 mm; and large: 400–552 mm). The median concentrations of Cd, Zn, and THg in the large size group differed significantly (p < 0.05) between genders. The estimated weekly intake values of quantified elements from muscle were below the provisional tolerable weekly intakes. Non-carcinogenic risk assessment in adult consumers, being below one (THQ ≤ 1; and TTHQ ≤ 1), indicated an insignificant health hazard. The estimated incremental and cumulative cancer risks in the adult class through Cr, As, Ni, and Pb exposure were greater than the benchmark (10⁻⁵). Accordingly, high dietary intake of metals/metalloid from cultured O. mykiss posed a risk of carcinogenesis in the adult risk class.

Essential and non-essential elements in biological samples of inhabitants residing in Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Arctic

Exposure of Arctic residents to environmental pollutants is an emerging public health problem receiving little global attention. The objective of this study was to assess whole blood concentrations of nine selected essential (Co, Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) and non-essential (As, Cd, Hg, Pb) elements among Nenets and non-Nenets adult residents of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO) living in seven coastal and inland settlements. Urine was collected in two settlements for assessment of iodine status. Altogether 297 whole blood and 68 urine samples were analysed by inductively coupled mass spectrometry and the accuracy of the measurements was assessed by use of human whole blood and urine quality control materials. Several essential and non-essential showed significant variations in whole blood concentrations characterized by gender, population group and locality. Cd levels among non-Nenets non-smokers (0.19 µg/L) indicated a dietary intake at a natural global background level. Hg concentrations in whole blood show that not more than 10% of women in the fertile age had a Hg intake above the EFAS's recommendation. The Pb concentrations were in the range of, or partly exceeding reference values for increased risk of nephrotoxicity, and there is a need for a continued effort to reduce Pb exposure among the population groups in NAO. With high prevalence of obesity among the Nenets and non-Nenets population, a high prevalence of Fe-deficiency among menstruating women (<50 years) (37.2%) and a lower I status than recommended by WHO, these nutritional dependent components deserve further attention.

Characterization of classes of mollusks in the East Atlantic according to their element content

One hundred and ninety-two samples from six species of mollusks classified into the following taxonomic classes: Gastropoda (Patella aspera, Patella candei crenata), Bivalvia (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Ensis directus), and Cephalopoda (Abraliposis morisii, Pyroteuthis margatifera) were investigated. Samples were collected in the Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands and Galicia). The concentrations of Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, and Zn were determined by ICP-OES. Statistical analysis verified that the classes of benthic organisms had the highest concentration of elements. However, the Cephalopoda class had the highest Cd (1.685 ± 0.929 mg/kg) and Pb (0.826 ± 1.104 mg/kg) content. On the other hand, the values obtained in this study were compared with studies conducted in other parts of the world to verify the environmental state of the Atlantic Ocean using the organisms studied as bioindicators.

Accumulation of elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Börner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) macrophytes under different salinity levels

Accumulation of essential/beneficial and non-essential chemical elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Börner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) rooted macrophytes in three water bodies was studied as dependent on water salinity (specific conductivity) and main environmental factors (temperature, pH of water, growing period, element contents in water and sediments). Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP - OES) was used for the element detection in the plants, sediments, and water. Multivariate statistics redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that investigated factors together explained 37.8 - 44.7% and 29.9 - 42.6% of the essential/beneficial and non-essential elements variability, respectively, whereas salinity was one of the main factors determining the accumulation of a number of elements (Mg, S, Na, Li, Sr, Sb) by the macrophytes. A decrease in the essential element contents (K, P, N, Cu, Zn) was observed in both species of the macrophytes during the growing season. Environmental factors (salinity, growing period, and pH) were more significant than the element contents in water and the sediments for the essential/beneficial element accumulation by two species of the macrophytes. The element contents in the sediments to a greater extent determined non-essential element accumulation by P. australis than by S. pectinata. The study showed that the efficiency of using P. australis and S. pectinata for remediation of aquatic ecosystems contaminated by heavy metals should not decrease with a salinity increase.

Hermetia illucens exhibits bioaccumulative potential for 15 different elements - Implications for feed and food production

A new branch of the insect-based food and feed industry is intensively developing all over the world, the best proof of which is the recent change in legislation at the European level allowing the use of insect protein in the production of feed for aquaculture animals. Previous publications have proven that some heavy metals can be bioaccumulated in fly H. illucens (black soldier fly), even when the insect is raised on optimal feed with an acceptable heavy metal content. The purpose of this study was to determine the bioaccumulation potential of H. illucens in relation to micro- and macroelements, toxic elements and for the first time, selected non-essential elements from optimal feed. Our results showed that bioaccumulation of Ba, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mo, Se and Zn occurred in all stages of insect development and in puparia, while bioaccumulation of Al, As, Co, K, Pb and Si was not found. The highest bioaccumulation factors were obtained for Ca and Mn in puparia - 38 and 21 respectively. In addition, Ca, Cd, Ga, Mn, P and S were bioaccumulated only in some developmental stages of the insect. The results are discussed in the context of the safety of feed and food production from H. illucens.

Assessment of heavy metals in different organs of cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) from a rural and urban environment in Pakistan

The study was conducted to evaluate the concentration of essential elements (Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn, and B) and non-essential elements (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, As, and Ni) in muscle, liver, bone, and intestine of matured cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). Sampling was carried out at two sites of Lahore, Pakistan-Havalian Karbath (site I) and Mehmood Booti (site II)-over a period of 1 month in the winter season. Metal analyses of samples were carried out using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS). The trend of essential elements in liver and intestine of site I was noticed as Fe > Zn > Cu > B > Mn > Se > Ni and almost same for bone and muscle as Fe > Zn > B > Mn > Cu > Se > Ni. It was noticed that Cu was less deposited in bone and muscle tissues compared to liver and intestine from site I. The deposition of essential elements in liver and intestine from site II was noticed as Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > B > Se > Ni. Similar trend was found for bone and muscle: Fe > Zn > B > Mn > Cu > Se > Ni with great deposition of B than Cu compared to liver and intestine. The findings of the present study revealed almost similar trend for essential elements deposition at both sites. However, a random trend was observed for deposition of non-essential elements (Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb) in organs from both sites. Moreover, data showed higher levels of non-essential elements accumulation (particularly As, Ba, and Pb) in the body tissues/organs of cattle egret in an urban area (site II) as compared to rural area (site I) of Lahore. Furthermore, non-essential elements were more in intestine, bone, and muscles from site II showing more exposure to some non-essential elements at urban site due to human and natural activities. However, higher concentration of non-essential elements in liver from site I as compared to other organs not only reflect the land exposure to plant growth promoting fertilizers and sewage water for irrigation purpose but also better detoxification abilities of the rural birds. The study gave a new insight to inform contamination levels in the rural and urban sites. Future implications of this study need remediation strategies to clean environment requisite for avian species.

Toxicity assessment of molybdenum slag as a mineral fertilizer: A case study with pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.)

Large quantities of molybdenum (Mo) slag are generated as a by-product during mining and smelting, which not only occupy huge stretches of arable land and natural habitats but also threaten the local ecosystem and environment. How to recycle this Mo slag is becoming an urgent issue. Here, we reported the toxicity assessment of Mo slag as a mineral fertilizer for slag recycling in agricultural practices. The results showed the following: (1) Lower rates of slag (1.0%, 2.5%, and 5.0%) fertilization, especially 5.0% slag, increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase), the contents of chlorophyll, and both the maximum quantum yield and quantum efficiency of photosystem II; decreased the content of malondialdehyde and the non-photochemical quenching of photosystem II; and eventually increased the height, leaf area, and biomass of pakchoi seedlings; (2) Higher rates (7.5% and 10.0%) of Mo slag application resulted in a reduction in the aforementioned physiological and morphological parameters (except for peroxidase activity) of pakchoi seedlings; and (3) Although fertilization with 5.0% slag increased the accumulation of the non-essential elements arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in pakchoi seedlings, their contents were still lower than the maximum levels of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, European Union, and standards of China. From the perspectives of plant nutrition and food safety, our results showed that Mo slag fertilization at rates lower than 5.0% can be applied as a mineral fertilizer for pakchoi grown on calcareous soils.

Essential and non-essential elements in natural vegetation in southern Norway: contribution from different sources

Concentrations of essential and non-essential elements in five widespread species of natural boreal vegetation were studied with respect to seasonal variation and contribution from different sources. The plant species included in the study were Betula pubescens, Sorbus aucuparia, Vaccinium myrtillus, Vaccinium uliginosum, Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa. Concentrations of elements essential to plants remained essentially constant or decreased slightly throughout the growing season. Concentrations of most non-essential elements increased or tended to increase on a dry mass basis from June to July as well as from July to September. The increasing trend for these elements was observed for all species except C. vulgaris. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the material indicated a common source for many of the non-essential elements; Sc, Ti, V, Ga, As, Y, Sb, lanthanides, Pb, Bi, and U, i.e. both elements presumably of geogenic origin and elements associated with trans-boundary air pollution. Uptake by plant roots appeared to be the main source of nutrient elements as well as some non-essential elements.

Residues of chromium, nickel, cadmium and lead in Rook Corvus frugilegus eggshells from urban and rural areas of Poland

We examined the concentrations of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in Rook Corvus frugilegus eggshells from 43 rookeries situated in rural and urban areas of western (=intensive agriculture) and eastern (=extensive agriculture) Poland. We found small ranges in the overall level of Cr (the difference between the extreme values was 1.8-fold; range of concentrations=5.21-9.40 Cr ppm), Ni (3.5-fold; 1.15-4.07 Ni ppm), and Cd (2.6-fold; 0.34-0.91 Cd ppm), whereas concentrations of Pb varied markedly, i.e. 6.7-fold between extreme values (1.71-11.53 Pb ppm). Eggshell levels of these four elements did not differ between rural rookeries from western and eastern Poland, but eggshells from rookeries in large/industrial cities had significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Ni and Pb than those from small towns and villages. Our study suggests that female Rooks exhibited an apparent variation in the intensity of trace metal bioaccumulation in their eggshells, that rapid site-dependent bioaccumulation of Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb occurs as a result of the pollution gradient (rural<urban), and that Cd levels are probably regulated physiologically, even though these were relatively high, which could be treated as an overall proxy of a heavy Cd load in the soil environment.
