An Improved Performance Radar Sensor for K-Band Automotive Radars

This paper presents a new radar sensor configuration of a planar grid antenna array (PGAA) for automotive ultra-wideband (UWB) radar applications. For system realisation, the MIMO concept is adopted. The proposed antenna is designed to operate over the 24 GHz frequency band. It is based on split-ring resonator (SRR) elements to enhance the operating bandwidth and increase the antenna gain, leading to a better-performing radar system. The PGAA consists of thirty-one radiating elements, in which each element excitation is obtained using a common transmission line centre fed by a 50 Ω coaxial probe. By introducing a superstrate dielectric layer at a distance of λ/2 from the top of the antenna array, the PGAA gain and impedance bandwidth are further improved. The gain is improved by 2.7 dB to reach 16.5 dBi at 24 GHz, and the impedance bandwidth is enhanced to 9.3 GHz (37.7%). The measured impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna array ranges from 20 GHz to 29.3 GHz for a reflection coefficient (S11) of less than -10 dB. The proposed antenna is validated for automotive applications.

Shedding Light on Roman Glass Consumption on the Western Coast of the Black Sea

The chemical composition of 48 glass finds from Histria and Tomis, Romania, chiefly dated to the 1st-4th c. AD, was determined using prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC). Most fragments have composition typical for the Roman naturally colored blue-green-yellow (RNCBGY) glass; Mn-colorless, Sb-colorless, and Sb-Mn colorless glass finds were evidenced, too. Several Foy Série 2.1 and Foy Série 3.2 glass fragments, as well as an HIMT and a plant ash glass sample, were identified in the studied assemblage. The archaeological evidence, the glass working waste items, and the samples with compositional patterns suggestive of recycling are proofs of the secondary glass working activities at Tomis during the Early Roman Empire period.

Neutron guide optimization for the Moroccan PGAA system

The Moroccan TRIGA Mark II research reactor is to be equipped with a PGAA (Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis) facility to assist the country's progression in socioeconomic areas such as the environment and geochemistry, agriculture, health, industry, cultural heritage, and human sciences. The requirements of the PGAA facility include a very high thermal to fast neutron flux ratio and a focused, thin beam. Supermirror neutron guides are generally used to meet such requirements due to their ability to reflect neutrons with a specific energy and scattering angle. This study was undertaken to determine a suitable neutron guide for achieving optimal performance for the PGAA facility, where such a determination needs to be made according to both the available space and the minimum performance needed for PGAA analysis. To better parameterize the neutron guide, a set of simulations were performed with the aim of establishing the best guide specifications. Three types of neutron guides were studied, namely straight, curved, and bender. McStas code was used in this study, and the simulations showed that the guides must be 6 m long and that the coating value m must be equal to 5 for the bender and straight guides and 6 for the curved guide. Among the three guide types, the thermal/epithermal (Ф_th/Ф_ep) and thermal/fast (Ф_th/Ф_fast) ratios were found to be much better when using the curved guide.

The Use of Neutron Analysis Techniques for Detecting The Concentration And Distribution of Chloride Ions in Archaeological Iron

Chloride (Cl) ions diffuse into iron objects during burial and drive corrosion after excavation. Located under corrosion layers, Cl is inaccessible to many analytical techniques. Neutron analysis offers non-destructive avenues for determining Cl content and distribution in objects. A pilot study used prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) and prompt gamma activation imaging (PGAI) to analyse the bulk concentration and longitudinal distribution of Cl in archaeological iron objects. This correlated with the object corrosion rate measured by oxygen consumption, and compared well with Cl measurement using a specific ion meter. High-Cl areas were linked with visible damage to the corrosion layers and attack of the iron core. Neutron techniques have significant advantages in the analysis of archaeological metals, including penetration depth and low detection limits.

Archaeometallurgical characterization of the earliest European metal helmets

Archaeometric analyses on conical and decorated cap helmets from the Bronze Age are presented. The helmets are dated to the 14-12th century BC according to associated finds in hoards. Alloy composition, material structure and manufacturing processes are determined and shed light on the earliest development of weaponry production in Central and Eastern Europe. Analyses were carried out using light and dark field microscopy, SEM-EDXS, PIXE, TOF-ND and PGAA. The results allowed reconstructing the manufacturing process, the differences between the cap of the helmets and their knobs (i.e. alloy composition) and the joining technique of the two parts.
