Rapidly Synthesized Single-Ion Conductive Hydrogel Electrolyte for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Zinc-ion Batteries

Single-ion conductive electrolytes can largely eliminate electrode polarization, reduce the proportion of anion migration and inhibit side reactions in batteries. However, they usually suffer from insufficient ion conductivity due to the strong interaction between cations and cationic receptors. Here we report an ultrafast light-responsive covalent organic frameworks (COF) with sulfonic acid groups modification as the acrylamide polymerization initiator. Benefiting from the reduced electrostatic interaction between Zn2+ and sulfonic acid groups through solvation effects, the as-prepared COF-based hydrogel electrolyte (TCOF-S-Gel) receives an ion conductivity of up to 27.2 mS/cm and Zn2+ transference number of up to 0.89. In addition, sufficient hydrogen bonds endow the single-ion conductive TCOF-S-Gel electrolyte to have good water retention and superb mechanical properties. The assembled Zn||TCOF-S-Gel||MnO2 full zinc-ion battery exhibits high discharge capacity (248 mAh/g at 1C), excellent rate capability (90 mAh/g at 10C) and superior cycling performance. These enviable results enlist the instantaneously photocured TCOF-S-Gel electrolyte to be qualified to large-scaled flexible high-performance quasi-solid-state zinc-ion batteries.

Bacterial cellulose adhesive patches designed for soft mucosal interfaces

The wet environment in the oral cavity is challenging for topical disease management approaches. The compromised material properties leading to weak adhesion and short retention (<8 h) in such environment result in frequent reapplication of the therapeutics. Composites of bacterial cellulose (BC) and carbene-based bioadhesives attempt to address these shortcomings. Previous designs comprised of aqueous formulations. The current design, for the first time, presents dry, shelf-stable cellulose patches for convenient ready-to-use application. The dry patches simultaneously remove tissue surface hydration while retaining carbene-based photocuring and offers on-demand adhesion. The dry patch prototypes are optimized by controlling BC/adhesive mole ratios and dehydration technique. The adhesion strength is higher than commercial denture adhesives on soft mucosal tissues. The structural integrity is maintained for a minimum of 7 days in aqueous environment. The patches act as selective nanoporous barrier against bacteria while allowing permeation of proteins. The results support the application of BC-based adhesive patches as a flexible platform for wound dressings, drug depots, or combination thereof.

Bacterial cellulose adhesive composites for oral cavity applications

Topical approaches to oral diseases require frequent dosing due to limited retention time. A mucoadhesive drug delivery platform with extended soft tissue adhesion capability of up to 7 days is proposed for on-site management of oral wound. Bacterial cellulose (BC) and photoactivated carbene-based bioadhesives (PDz) are combined to yield flexible film platform for interfacing soft tissues in dynamic, wet environments. Structure-activity relationships evaluate UV dose and hydration state with respect to adhesive strength on soft tissue mimics. The bioadhesive composite has an adhesion strength ranging from 7 to 17 kPa and duration exceeding 48 h in wet conditions under sustained shear forces, while other mucoadhesives based on hydrophilic macromolecules exhibit adhesion strength of 0.5-5 kPa and last only a few hours. The work highlights the first evaluation of BC composites for mucoadhesive treatments in the buccal cavity.

Photocurable coatings prepared by emulsion polymerization present chelating properties

Herein, we present a method to synthesize a photocurable metal chelating copolymer coating via emulsion polymerization to enable a facile coat/cure preparation of metal chelating materials. The copolymer coating was a poly(n-butyl acrylate) based polymer (79 mol %) synthesized by emulsion polymerization, with iminodiacetic acid (2 mol %) and benzophenone moieties (19 mol %) to impart metal chelating and photocrosslinking properties, respectively. The copolymer was applied onto polypropylene films and was photocured (365 nm, 225 mW/cm², 180 s) to produce metal chelating film. The resulting metal chelating film had activity towards Fe³⁺ by chelating 10.9 ± 1.9 nmol/cm², 47.9 ± 5.3 nmol/cm², and 156.0 ± 13.8 nmol/cm² of Fe³⁺ at pH 3.0, pH 4.0, and pH 5.0, respectively. The metal chelating film controlled transition metal induced ascorbic acid degradation by extending half-life of ascorbic acid degradation from 6 days to 20 days at pH 3.0, and from 3 days to 6 days at pH 5.0, demonstrating its potential as an antioxidant active packaging material. Despite the introduction of polar iminodiacetic acid chelating moieties, the poly(n-butyl acrylate) based coatings retained low surface energies (24.0 mN/m) necessary to mitigate fouling and enable product release in packaging applications. This work overcomes a major knowledge gap in the area of functional coatings, by demonstrating a method by which critical properties such as control of surface energy, retention of mechanical properties, and scalability are integrated into the structure of a functional coating. The photocurable polymer coatings as reported here enable scalable production of active materials with metal chelating functionality, with applications in water treatment, trace metal detection, protein purification, and active packaging.
