Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of repeated explicit instructions on visuomotor adaptation, awareness, and intermanual transfer. In a comprehensive study design, 48 participants performed center-out reaching movements before and during exposure to a 60° rotation of visual feedback. Awareness and intermanual transfer were then determined. Twelve participants each were assigned to one of the following adaptation conditions: gradual adaptation, sudden adaptation without instructions, sudden adaptation with a single instruction before adaptation, and sudden adaptation with multiple instructions before and during adaptation. The explicit instructions explained the nature of the visual feedback perturbation and were given using an illustration of a clock face. Analysis of adaptation indices revealed neither increased nor decreased adaptation after repeated instructions compared with a single instruction. In addition, we found significant group differences for the awareness index, with lower awareness after gradual adaptation than after sudden, instructed adaptation. Our data also show increased initial adaptation in aware participants; regardless of whether awareness was developed independently or with instruction. Intermanual transfer did not differ between groups. However, we found a significant correlation between the awareness and intermanual transfer indices. We conclude that the magnitude of the explicit process cannot be further increased by repeated instruction and that intermanual transfer appears to be largely related to the explicit adaptation process.

Abstract
Implicit (unconscious) and explicit (strategy) processes have been shown to contribute to visuomotor adaptation. Current methods, such as the Process Dissociation Procedure (PDP) and the Verbal Report Framework (VRF), simultaneously evaluate both implicit and explicit contributions to visuomotor adaptation. It is unclear whether the act of assessing explicit adaptation leads to variations in the magnitude of implicit adaptation observed. To address this question, four groups of participants adapted their reaches to a 40° clockwise visuomotor rotation. Implicit and explicit adaptation were assessed in a PDP-IE group and a VRF-IE group following 3 blocks of rotated reach training trials. In contrast, only implicit adaptation was assessed at the same time points for a PDP-I group and VRF-I group. Results indicated a similar magnitude of implicit adaptation regardless of whether explicit adaptation was assessed or not. Thus, assessing explicit adaptation simultaneously with implicit adaptation following reach adaptation does not influence the magnitude of implicit adaptation established via the PDP and VRF methods.

Abstract
The Process Dissociation Procedure (PDP) and Verbal Report Framework (VRF) reveal that both explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) processes contribute to visuomotor adaptation. We looked to determine whether these two assessment methods establish similar processes underlying visuomotor adaptation by comparing the magnitude of explicit and implicit adaptation over time between the two assessments and to post-experiment assessments of awareness of the visuomotor distortion. Three groups of participants (PDP, VRF, VRF No-Cursor) completed three blocks of reach training in a virtual environment with a cursor rotated 40° clockwise relative to hand motion. Explicit and implicit adaptations were assessed immediately following each block, and again 5 min later. The VRF No-Cursor group completed the same assessment trials as the VRF group, but no visual feedback was presented during explicit and implicit assessment. Finally, participants completed a post-experiment questionnaire and a drawing task to assess their awareness of the visuomotor rotation and changes in reaches at the end of the experiment, respectively. We found that all groups adapted their reaches to the rotation. Averaged across participants, the magnitude and retention of explicit and implicit adaptations were similar between the PDP group and VRF group, with the VRF group demonstrating greater implicit adaptation than the VRF No-Cursor group. Furthermore, the magnitude of explicit adaptation established in the VRF group was not related to participant's post-experiment awareness of the visuomotor distortion nor how they had changed their reaches, as observed in the PDP group and VRF No-Cursor group. Together, these results indicate that, explicit adaptation established via typical VRF methods does not reflect one's awareness of the visuomotor distortion at the end of the experiment, and hence the established processes underlying visuomotor adaptation are dependent on method of assessment (i.e., PDP versus VRF).

Abstract
People with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) repeat questions, seemingly without any sense of familiarity (i.e., recognition of prior occurrence without recollection of episodic context). Accumulation of neurofibrillary tau in preclinical Alzheimer's disease begins in perirhinal cortex, a medial temporal lobe region linked to familiarity. Both observations would predict impaired familiarity assessment in aMCI; however, the extant evidence is mixed. To reveal familiarity impairments, it may be necessary to minimize the influence of recollection. In the current study, older adults with aMCI and healthy controls were administered two tasks on which a well-characterized patient (NB) with selective familiarity impairments due to surgical left temporal lobe excision sparing the hippocampus showed abnormal performance: frequency judgments for words exposed to in a recent study phase and judgments of cumulative lifetime familiarity for object concepts denoted by words. We also administered a process dissociation procedure (PDP) task that previously revealed spared familiarity in aMCI. We predicted that familiarity would be spared in aMCI on the PDP task, but impaired when assessed by frequency judgments for recent laboratory exposures and lifetime familiarity judgments. Familiarity was spared on the PDP task, but was impaired when probed with frequency judgments for recently exposed words in aMCI. Lifetime familiarity was also not impaired in aMCI. These results highlight the benefits of studying familiarity under conditions that minimize recollection and the value of frequency judgments in revealing familiarity deficits, and suggest that perirhinal cortex may not be necessary for accessing familiarity accumulated over a lifetime of experience.

Abstract
Recognition memory abilities undergo important developmental changes until adulthood, with earlier studies showing different trajectories for recollection and familiarity-based processes. However, previous work has primarily focused on childhood, and differences in memory retrieval, notably in recollection, between adolescents and adults, have been hard to confirm. To address this gap in the literature and to better characterize the development of recollection and familiarity during adolescence, we applied the process dissociation procedure to a word recognition memory task, after semantic and perceptual encoding of words, in adolescents (n = 30, 13-15 years of age) and young adults (n = 30, 20-22 years). Relative to young adults, adolescents' lower recognition memory performance was restricted to context recollection of semantically encoded items. This effect was predicted by individual differences in inhibitory control abilities. These findings highlight the distinct developmental trajectories of familiarity and context recollection over the course of adolescence, and suggest that semantic elaboration and inhibition are two key mechanisms toward the full maturation of recollection processes.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is associated with severe episodic retrieval impairment. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that schizophrenia patients could improve their familiarity and/or recollection processes by manipulating the semantic coherence of to-be-learned stimuli and using deep encoding. Twelve schizophrenia patients and 12 healthy controls of comparable age, gender, and educational level undertook an associative recognition memory task. The stimuli consisted of pairs of words that were either related or unrelated to a given semantic category. The process dissociation procedure was used to calculate the estimates of familiarity and recollection processes. Both groups showed enhanced memory performances for semantically related words. However, in healthy controls, semantic relatedness led to enhanced recollection, while in schizophrenia patients, it induced enhanced familiarity. The familiarity estimates for related words were comparable in both groups, indicating that familiarity could be used as a compensatory mechanism in schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
The interaction of reference and working memory was studied in rats on an eight-arm radial maze. Each trial involved a two-phase procedure in which a rat was forced to enter four arms on the maze in a study phase and then was allowed to choose among all eight arms in a test phase given 5-s later, with choice of only the previously unvisited arms rewarded. For each rat, two arms on the maze were designated as reference memory arms because they were never entered in the study phase and were always rewarded in the test phase. The other two arms never entered in the study phase and rewarded in the test phase were working memory arms and varied randomly from trial to trial. In Experiment 1, rats showed acquisition of equivalent preference for entering the reference and working memory arms in their first four choices of the test phase. Subsequent tests carried out in Experiment 2 compared performance at 5-s, 1-h, and 24-h retention intervals when reference memory and working memory were congruent and incongruent. Higher accuracy for choice of reference memory arms than working memory arms appeared at the 1-h and 24-h retention intervals on congruent tests but not on incongruent tests. A process dissociation procedure analysis indicated that working memory but not reference memory declined over the 24-h retention interval. The interaction of working and reference memory was shown by superior choice of reference memory arms on congruent tests than on incongruent tests at 1-h and 24-h retention intervals but not at the 5-s retention interval. These findings suggest that working and reference memory are independent systems that can facilitate and compete with one another. Abstract
The present study examined whether parents at high-risk for child physical abuse (CPA) differed from low-risk parents in their tendency to infer positive traits and negative traits from children's behaviors. The final sample consisted of 58 (25 low CPA risk and 33 high CPA risk) parents. Parents completed a false-recognition task, which involved viewing behavior descriptions paired with child photographs. Half of the behavior descriptions vaguely/strongly implied a trait and half of the implied traits were positive/negative. The contributions of automatic processes and controlled processes to task performance were examined using process dissociation procedures. Low CPA risk parents were significantly less likely to indicate negative traits were present in behavioral descriptions of children when negative traits were vaguely (compared to strongly) implied. In contrast, high CPA risk parents were equally likely to indicate negative traits were present regardless of whether the traits were vaguely or strongly implied. For low (but not high) CPA risk parents, automatic processes contributed significantly less to task performance when negative traits were vaguely implied compared to when the same traits were strongly implied. Given that parenting involves negotiating a seemingly endless series of ambiguous behaviors as children grow and develop, the capacity to refrain from automatically attributing negative traits to children when they exhibit vaguely negative behaviors may serve an important function in reducing risk of aggressive parenting behavior.
