Abstract
While zinc protects plants from copper in hydroponics, its behavior in soil remains unclear. We investigated the potential of zinc sulfate to protect ryegrass from copper toxicity in contaminated soil. Twelve soil treatments combined varying levels of copper oxide (CuO) and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4). Increasing CuO significantly stunted ryegrass, but adding ZnSO4 mitigated the effects at each CuO level. ZnSO4 had no effect in unpolluted conditions. These results, supported by the Terrestrial Biotic Ligand Model, indicate that zinc competes with copper for binding sites, reducing copper uptake by ryegrass and mitigating its toxicity. Application of zinc sulfate to copper-contaminated soils appears promising for ryegrass growth, although field studies are critical to confirm real-world efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study evaluated the protective effect of 13-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (PCV13) against all-cause hospitalized pneumonia in children in Beijing. METHODS Based on the vaccination record and inpatient medical record database of Beijing, children born in 2017 in Beijing, matched by age, gender, and district of the children with the ratio of 1:4, were selected as the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups according whether if vaccinated with PCV13. The incidence rate and 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI), vaccine effectiveness (VE) and direct medical costs of all-cause hospitalized pneumonia were calculated and compared within the same period of 12 months, 18 months, 24 months and 30 months after the birth of the child. RESULTS The decreased incidence rates of all-cause hospitalized pneumonia were observed at the four points in the PCV13 vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group, which were significant at the points of 12 months (0.42 % vs. 0.72 %, P = 0.001), 18 months (0.90 % vs. 1.26 %, P = 0.002) and 24 months (1.37 % vs. 1.65 %, P = 0.046). The VE of PCV13 against all-cause hospitalized pneumonia within 12 months was the highest as 41.9 % (95 % CI 19.6 %, 58.0 %), followed by 29.3 % (95 % CI 11.4 %, 43.5 %) within 18 months, 17.1 % (95 % CI 0.3 %, 31.1 %) within 24 months and it almost disappeared within 30 months. The VE of 4-dose vaccination within 18 months and 24 months were 39.9 % (95 % CI 20.3 %, 54.7 %) and 27.2 % (95 % CI 8.6 %, 42.0 %), respectively. The median hospitalization cost of the children in the vaccinated group was higher at the four points but without significance. CONCLUSIONS PCV13 had a certain protective effect on all-cause hospitalized pneumonia, and the booster immunization strategy had the best protective effect with great public health significance to enter the immunization program.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Placenta is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, known as "Ziheche", which has the function of tonifying qi and blood, nourishing liver and kidney. Placenta extract (PE) has been used for delaying organismal aging and treating various liver diseases. Cow placenta is a rich natural resource with large mass. Its composition is similar to that of human placenta, but it has not been effectively utilized. However, little is known about the effect of CPE on the liver of aging mice. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study is to explore the protective effect and mechanism of CPE on the liver of d-galactose (D-gal) induced aging mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Statistical methods were used to calculate mouse body weight and liver index. Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to detect the morphological structure of the liver. Automatic biochemical analyzer was used to measure serum biochemical indicators. Three special staining methods were used to observe hepatocytes apoptosis, senescence and proliferation respectively. Relative kits were used to detect oxidative, inflammatory, and aging markers in the liver. Finally, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western-blot were used to detect aging related signaling pathways. RESULTS CPE significantly improved the morphological damage and dysfunction of liver, restored the activities of liver enzymes in serum, and alleviated liver oxidative stress and inflammatory response in D-gal induced aging mice. Furthermore, CPE inhibited hepatocyte apoptosis and senescence, and promoted hepatocyte proliferation by regulating BAX/CASP3 and p53/p21/p16 signaling pathways, ultimately reduced the effects of aging on the liver. CONCLUSION CPE effectively ameliorated the impact of aging on the liver by inhibiting free radical production or scavenging excessive free radicals, and its mechanism is associated to the regulation of apoptosis and proliferation-related factors.

Abstract
Exposure to tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) leads to cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in various organs and cell types. The bioactive peptides extracted from Oysters exhibit marked antioxidant activity. The impacts of Crassostrea gigas peptides on t-BHP-triggered oxidative stress remain largely unknown. The protective and antioxidant activity of a C.gigas peptide, PEP-1, on t-BHP-treated HepG2 cells, was investigated. PEP-1, this peptide is arginine kinase in oysters. This enzyme functions as a catalyst for the chemical reaction and serves as a phosphate transferase. Since it was the most expressed protein in the adductor muscle of oysters. Our determination showed the lowest level of a toxic concentration of t-BHP (200 µM) and the resting concentration of PEP-1 (0-1000 ng/ml). PEP-1 exerted a protective effect against t-BHP-induced apoptosis by modifying the expression of pro-and anti-apoptotic proteins. PEP-1 administration reduced nitric oxide and ROS levels while restoring levels of antioxidant proteins in t-BHP-induced cells. PEP-1 exhibited the capacity to enhance the translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Therefore, the C. gigas peptide PEP-1 has demonstrated its ability to protect HepG2 cells against oxidative stress induced by t-BHP.

Abstract
Significant acute cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine changes have been traced to short-lasting cold water immersion (CWI); however, the long-term impact of recurrent CWI on atherogenesis, lipid parameters, and fat distribution has not yet been studied. The goal of this study was to investigate the alleged protective effect. A total of 35 healthy volunteers were monitored for a period of 5 months during which the CWI was performed under standardized conditions (three times per week for 7-10 min, without neoprene equipment). Volunteers with measured weight or muscle mass increases of more than 5% were ineligible. An analogous control group (N = 30) was included. At the onset and completion of the study, blood samples were obtained, and clinical assessments took place. PCSK9 and hsCRP levels were measured together with other lipid-related and non-lipid-related indicators. Carotid intima-media thickness test (cIMT) and echo-tracking for the identification of arterial stiffness (PWV, AI, and β) were used to identify early vascular alterations. Hepatorenal index (HRI) calculations served to quantify liver steatosis, while changes in subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness were used to quantify fat distribution. The given protocol was successfully completed by 28 volunteers. Long-term repeated CWI resulted in a significant decline in cIMT (p = 0.0001), AI (p = 0.0002), Beta (p = 0.0001), and PWV (p = 0.0001). PCSK9 (p = 0.01) and hsCRP (p = 0.01) showed a significant decrease when compared to initial values. In comparison to the starting values, liver fat accumulation decreased by 11% on average (HRI p = 0.001). LDL, TC, TG, and VLDL levels all significantly decreased as well. We suggest that repeated CWI may have beneficial impact on lipid, non-lipid, and lipid-related indices, as well as atherogenesis and liver fat storage.

Abstract
Cancer presents a significant medical challenge that requires effective management. Current cancer treatment options, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, have limitations in terms of their efficacy and the potential harm they can cause to normal tissues. In response, researchers have been focusing on developing adjuvants that can enhance tumor responses while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. Among the promising options, nanoceria (NC), a type of nanoparticle composed of cerium oxide, has garnered attention for its potential to improve various cancer treatment regimens. Nanoceria has demonstrated its ability to exhibit toxicity towards cancer cells, inhibit invasion, and sensitize cancer cells to both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The remarkable aspect is that nanoceria show minimal toxicity to normal tissues while protecting against various forms of reactive oxygen species generation. Its capability to enhance the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy and radiotherapy has also been observed. This paper thoroughly reviews the current literature on nanoceria's applications within different cancer treatment modalities, with a specific focus on radiotherapy. The emphasis is on nanoceria's unique role in enhancing tumor radiosensitization and safeguarding normal tissues from radiation damage.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the current situation of noise hazard in a motor manufacturing enterprise, and to explore the protective effect of workers wearing hearing protective device and its possible influencing factors. Methods: In November 2021, a total of 179 noise workers wearing hearing protective devices in a motor manufacturing company in a city were selected as research objects. Personal attenuation rating (PAR) of workers wearing hearing protective devices was measured. Baseline PAR was analyzed for different subgroups of basic demographic information, noise exposure, and the use of hearing protective devices to evaluate the effect of the intervention. Baseline PAR was compared using nonparametric tests. Results: There were 179 workers from 35 positions in 4 types of work, and the over-standard noise rate was 51.2% (42/82), among which the noise exposure intensity of motor equipment debugging workers was the highest [94.4 dB (A) ]. Compared the baseline PAR of different characteristics, it was found that the baseline PAR of male workers, workers whose daily noise exposure time were <8 h, workers who had used the hearing protective devices for 10 to 14 years, and workers who thought the hearing protective devices were comfortable were all higher, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Baseline PAR passing rate was 43.0% (77/179), and PAR of 102 workers who did not pass baseline test increased from 0 (0, 3) dB before intervention to 14 (12, 16) dB after intervention, with statistical significance (P<0.05) . Conclusion: The noise hazard in this motor manufacturing enterprise is serious, and the protective effect of workers wearing hearing protective devices is not good. Gender, daily noise exposure time, years and comfort of wearing hearing protective device are the possible influencing factors of poor protective effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atheroprotective role of the myocardial bridge (MB) on a tunneled segment is already demonstrated in subjects with dual left anterior descending coronary artery (dual LAD) type 3 anomaly, but the dynamics of changes and whether this protective effect sustains during aging is unknown. METHODS The retrospective autopsy study included cases of dual LAD type 3 anomaly identified over 18 years. The severity grade of atherosclerosis in branches of dual LAD was estimated by microscopy. The Spearman's correlation test and Receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve analyses were performed to determine the relation of subjects' age with a degree of the protective role of the myocardial bridge. RESULTS A total of 32 dual LAD type 3 cases were identified. The systematic heart examination revealed an anomaly prevalence of 2.1%. The age significantly positively correlated with the severity of atherosclerosis in the subepicardial dual LAD branch but not with the severity of atherosclerosis in the intramyocardial dual LAD branch. Subjects aged ≥38 years were likely to have a more severe degree of atherosclerosis in subepicardial than in intramyocardial LAD arteries (AUC 0.81 95% CI 0.59-1; sensitivity 100%, specificity 66.7%). In subjects aged ≥58 years, this difference was likely to be more pronounced (≥2 degree difference; AUC 0.75 95% CI 0.58-0.93; sensitivity 92.9%, specificity 66.7%). CONCLUSION The atheroprotective effect of the myocardial bridge on tunneled segments usually becomes evident throughout the second half of the fourth decade of life and is most pronounced after about 60 years and ceases only in some.

Abstract
Previous studies have confirmed that Platycodon grandiflorus polysaccharide (PGPSt) has the effects of regulating immunity and anti-apoptosis, but its effect on mitochondrial damage and apoptosis caused by PRV infection is still unclear. In this research, the effects of PGPSt on the cell viability, mitochondria morphology, mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis caused by PRV based on PK-15 cells were respectively examined by CCK-F assay, Mito-Tracker Red CMXRos, JC-1 staining method and Western blot etc. CCK-F test results showed that PGPSt had a protective effect on the decrease of cell viability caused by PRV. The results of morphological observation found that PGPSt can improve mitochondrial morphology damage, mitochondrial swelling and thickening, and cristae fracture. Fluorescence staining test results showed that PGPSt alleviated the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis in infected cells. The expression of apoptosis-related proteins showed that PGPSt down-regulated the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax and up-regulated the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 in infected cells. These results indicated that PGPSt protected against PRV-induced PK-15 cell apoptosis by inhibiting mitochondrial damage.

Abstract
Synthetic pesticides are employed to enhance agricultural production. Chronic exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides may be a source of health problems. The present study was designed to examine an association of GSTP1 (rs1695) polymorphism with OP pesticide chronic exposure. A case-control study was recruited with 250 subjects comprising exposed (n = 100) and controls (n = 150). A survey was conducted to determine the pesticide type to which workers had exposed. According to recorded survey assessment, two compounds of OP pesticides chloropyrifos and malathion were investigated in the blood samples of exposed study subjects using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For screening of genetic polymorphism in GSTP1 (rs1695) polymerase chain reaction, restriction length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and agarose gel electrophoresis were performed. Statistically, data were analyzed using SPSS v. 20.0 and MedCal© software. Total chrom© navigator programmer was used for detection of OP residues in serum and local pesticide solution. chloropyrifos-OP pesticide residues were detected in serum of estimated chronically exposed subjects at 206 nm HPLC optimal conditions. The pattern of GSTP1 (rs1695) genotypic frequencies depicted that heterozygous genotype was higher in Chloropyrifos exposed subjects (0.56) when compared with controls (0.44). Statistical outcomes showed an insignificant association with GSTP1 (rs1695) polymorphism and chloropyrifos-OP pesticide toxicity (Fisher's exact test 1.0, p = 0.25). An insignificant allelic investigation reflected a protective effect of mutant allele G against chloropyrifos-OP pesticide toxicity in exposed subjects. Findings may be helpful in identifying bioaccumulated pesticide residues, but in studied Pakistani exposed workers, no significant association of GSTP1 (rs1695) variant with chloropyrifos-OPs was demonstrated.

Abstract
In this study, we systematically collected relevant literature in the past five years on the intervention of natural polysaccharides in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and reviewed the pharmacological activities and potential mechanisms of action. Natural polysaccharides are effective in preventing liver tissue degeneration, inhibiting the alcohol-induced expression of inflammatory factors, inactivation of antioxidant enzymes, and abnormal hepatic lipid deposition. Natural polysaccharides regulate the expression of proteins, such as tight junction proteins, production of small molecule metabolites, and balance of intestinal flora in the intestinal tract to alleviate ALD. Natural polysaccharides also exert therapeutic effects by modulating inflammatory, oxidative, lipid metabolism, and other pathways in the liver. Natural polysaccharides also inhibit alcohol-induced intestinal abnormalities by regulating intestinal flora and feeding back into the liver via the gut-liver axis. However, existing research on natural polysaccharides has many shortcomings: for example, most of the natural polysaccharides for testing are total polysaccharides or crude polysaccharides, progress in research on in vivo metabolic processes and mechanisms is slow, and the degree of industrialisation is insufficient. Finally, we discuss the difficulties in studying natural polysaccharides and future directions to provide a theoretical basis for their development and application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is increasing worldwide. Although there is currently no completely curative treatment, helminthic therapy shows certain therapeutic potential for UC. Many studies have found that Trichinella spiralis (T.s) has a protective effect on UC, but the specific mechanism is still unclear. METHODS Balb/c mice drank dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to induce acute colitis and then were treated with T.s. In vitro experiments, the LPS combination with ATP was used to induce the pyroptosis model, followed by intervention with crude protein from T.s (T.s cp). Additionally, the pyroptosis agonist of NSC or the pyroptosis inhibitor vx-765 was added to intervene to explore the role of pyroptosis in DSS-induced acute colitis. The degree of pyroptosis was evaluated by western blot, qPCR and IHC, etc., in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS T.s intervention significantly inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation and GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis by downregulating the expression of pyroptosis-related signatures in vitro (cellular inflammatory model) and in vivo (DSS-induced UC mice model). Furthermore, blockade of GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis by the caspase-1 inhibitor vx-765 has a similar therapeutic effect on DSS-induced UC mice with T.s intervention, thus indicating that T.s intervention alleviated DSS-induced UC in mice by inhibiting GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis. CONCLUSION This study showed that T.s could alleviate the pathological severity UC via GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis, and it provides new insight into the mechanistic study and application of helminths in treating colitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the long-term cumulative risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection associated with natural and vaccine-induced immunity. METHODS Retrospective population-based cohort study based on registry of COVID-19 vaccinations and SARS-CoV-2 infections among 9.1 million citizens of Lombardy, Italy, eligible for vaccination on 27th December 2020. Those who developed SARS-CoV-2 infection from 24th May to 14th September 2021, provided they did not yet receive the COVID-19 vaccine when infection was confirmed, and those who received the second mRNA vaccine dose, provided they had not yet developed the infection, were selected to be 1:1 matched for sex, age and index date. The latter corresponded to 90 days after confirmed infection or 14 days after vaccine administration. A control cohort including citizens who, on the index date, had neither developed infection nor received vaccination was also selected. Kaplan-Meier curves were used for comparing the cumulative incidence of new SARS-CoV-2 infection from the index date until 22nd June 2022. RESULTS Overall, 19,418 1:1:1 risk-sets were included. After 9 months of follow-up, the cumulative risk of new SARS-CoV-2 infection was 21.8%, 22.0%, and 25.9%, respectively, among exposed to natural immunity, vaccine-induced immunity and unexposed. CONCLUSIONS Equivalent potential for protecting against new SARS-CoV-2 infection was observed.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to identify novel compounds that could afford protection against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity by employing both cell- and zebrafish (Danio rerio)-based screening platforms. We screened 923 US Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs to identify potential compounds exhibiting protective effects against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in HEI-OC1 cells (auditory hair cell line). The screening strategy identified esomeprazole and dexlansoprazole as the primary hit compounds. Subsequently, we examined the effects of these compounds on cell viability and apoptosis. Our results revealed that esomeprazole and dexlansoprazole inhibited organic cation transporter 2 (OCT2), thus providing in vitro evidence that these compounds could ameliorate cisplatin-induced ototoxicity by directly inhibiting OCT2-mediated cisplatin transport. In vivo, the protective effects were validated using zebrafish; esomeprazole was found to decrease cisplatin-induced hair cell damage in neuromasts. Furthermore, the esomeprazole-treated group showed a significantly lower number of TUNEL-positive cells than the cisplatin-treated group. Collectively, our findings revealed that esomeprazole exerts a protective effect against cisplatin-induced hair cell damage in both HEI-OC1 cells and a zebrafish model.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench (EP) is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant, commonly known as purple conical flower. It was widely used to treat skin inflammation and gastrointestinal diseases. AIM OF STUDY Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and nonspecific inflammatory disease. Recent evidence shows that immune disorders are involved in the pathogenesis of UC. To evaluate the protective effect of Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench exact (EE) on UC and explore the role of complement system in the treatment of UC. MATERIALS AND METHODS UC model was induced in rats by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS), and then rats were administered with EE for 10 days. Collect colon tissues for analysis of relevant mechanisms. RESULTS EE could reduce the weight loss and diarrhea of UC rats. In addition, EE could improve the integrity of intestinal epithelial barrier in UC rats. EE inhibited the level of proinflammatory cytokines and promoted the antioxidation. Furthermore, EE suppressed the expression of C3aR, CFB, CD55, TLR4 and NLRP3. CONCLUSION These results indicate that EE may achieve therapeutic effect by inhibiting C3a/C3aR signal pathway, suggesting that EE may be used as a medicinal plant to alleviate UC.

Abstract
Next-generation microorganisms have recently gained prominence in the scientific community, mainly due to their probiotic and postbiotic potentials. However, there are few studies that investigate these potentials in food allergy models. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the probiotic potential of Akkermansia muciniphila BAA-835 in an ovalbumin food allergy (OVA) model and also analyse possible postbiotic potential. To access the probiotic potential, clinical, immunological, microbiological, and histological parameters were evaluated. In addition, the postbiotic potential was also evaluated by immunological parameters. Treatment with viable A. muciniphila was able to mitigate weight loss and serum levels of IgE and IgG1 anti-OVA in allergic mice. In addition, the ability of the bacteria to reduce the injury of the proximal jejunum, the eosinophil and neutrophil influx, and the levels of eotaxin-1, CXCL1/KC, IL4, IL6, IL9, IL13, IL17, and TNF, was clear. Furthermore, A. muciniphila was able to attenuate dysbiotic signs of food allergy by mitigating Staphylococcus levels and yeast frequency in the gut microbiota. In addition, the administration of the inactivated bacteria attenuated the levels of IgE anti-OVA and eosinophils, indicating its postbiotic effect. Our data demonstrate for the first time that the oral administration of viable and inactivated A. muciniphila BAA-835 promotes a systemic immunomodulatory protective effect in an in vivo model of food allergy to ovalbumin, which suggests its probiotic and postbiotic properties.

Abstract
Food allergy is a pathological condition that can lead to hives, swelling, gastrointestinal distress, cardiovascular and respiratory compromise, and even anaphylaxis. The lack of treatment resources emphasizes the necessity for new therapeutic strategies, and in this way, probiotics has been pointed out as an alternative, especially because of its immunomodulatory properties. The goal of this study was to evaluate the probiotic effect of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum 51A (BL51A) in a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA) food allergy, as well as to investigate the effect of the dose and viability of the bacteria on the proposed model. For this purpose, the probiotic effect was assessed by clinical, immunological, and histological parameters in mice treated or not with the BL51A and sensitized or not with OVA. Oral administration of BL51A prevented weight loss and reduced serum levels of IgE anti-OVA and of sIgA in the intestinal fluid. Also, it reduced the intestinal permeability, proximal jejunum damage, recruitment of eosinophils and neutrophils, and levels of eotaxin-1, CXCL1/KC, IL4, IL5, IL6, IL13, and TNF. Furthermore, the treatment was able to increase the levels of IL10. Investigating different doses administered, the level of 108 CFU showed the best results in terms of protective effect. In addition, the administration of the inactivated bacteria did not present any beneficial effect. Results demonstrate that BL51A promotes a systemic immunomodulatory protective effect in a murine model of food allergy that depends on the dose and viability of the bacteria, suggesting its use as probiotic in such disease.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) exposure may cause damage to C. elegans. However, the role of autophagy and its interactive effect with oxidative response in GO toxicity still remain largely unclear. In the present study, we investigated the protective role of autophagy against GO and its association with oxidative response using C. elegans as an in vivo system. Results indicated that GO exposure induced autophagy in a dose dependent manner in C. elegans. Autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and silencing autophagy genes lgg-1, bec-1 and unc-51 exacerbated the toxicity of GO whereas autophagy activator rapamycin alleviated it. In addition, the antioxidant N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) effectively suppressed the toxicity of GO with increased resistance to oxidative stress. Worms with RNAi-induced antioxidative genes sod-1, sod-2, sod-3 and sod-4 knockdown were more sensitive to GO. 3-MA increased the expression of superoxide dismutase SOD-3 under GO exposure conditions and exacerbated the toxicity of GO under the anti-oxidation inaction condition by sod-3 RNAi. In contrast, NAC reduced autophagy levels in GO exposed nematodes and increased tolerance to GO in autophagy-defective worms. These results suggested that autophagy and antioxidative response provide complementary protection against GO in C. elegans.

Abstract
As it is nearly impossible to reduce PM2.5 concentrations in most cities to safe limits in a short period of time, dietary supplementation presents a promising approach for mitigating the adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure. A cross-sectional study showed that the elderly population of Linfen (PM2.5: 102 μg/m3) exhibited significantly lower serum taurine levels, as well as higher oxidative stress levels and cardiovascular health risks, than the corresponding population in Guangzhou (PM2.5: 39 μg/m3). We conducted a random double-blind study on aged mice that employed a "real-world" PM2.5 exposure system to simulate the conditions of Linfen with the aim of investigating the protective effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation on PM2.5-induced heart dysfunction. When compared with the placebo group, supplementation with taurine and fish oil not only maintained normal taurine levels, but also suppressed oxidative stress and inflammation in aged mice subjected to high concentrations of PM2.5. Variations in heart rate, contractile function, cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis among different groups of aged mice were used to clarify the beneficial effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation. Our results not only revealed the protective effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation on heart dysfunction induced by PM2.5 exposure from the aged mice experiments and also provided new means for the elderly to resist PM2.5 pollution at the individual level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guiqi Baizhu Decoction (GQBZD) has a good protective effect on radiation-induced intestinal edema (RIIE). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms need further elucidation. PURPOSE To reveal the potential mechanism of RIIE and GQBZD treatment. METHODS SD rats were irradiated with 6Gy X-ray to establish RIIE model. The general condition of the rats was observed; the dry/wet weight ratio of colon tissue was detected; the morphological changes of colon tissue were observed by HE staining; the expressions of ROS, HIF-1α and AQP4 in colon tissue were detected by confocal laser scanning; the expression of edema-related proteins was detected by Western blot. In addition, human colon epithelial cells (NCM460) was irradiated with 2Gy X-ray, and HIF-1α expression in NCM460 was knocked down by small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection, and the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase was detected by enzyme activity kit; the ROS expression was detected by flow cytometer; the AQP4 expression was detected by laser confocal microscopy; and the expression of edema-related proteins were detected by Western blot. RESULTS We found that after irradiation, the colon tissue of rats was significantly edema, mainly manifested as mucosal and submucosal edema, and the ultrastructure was reflected in the structural damage of nucleus and mitochondria. ROS, HIF-1α and AQP4 were significantly expressed, and Na+/K+-ATPase expression/activity was decreased. After the intervention of GQBZD, the edema of the colon tissue of the rats was improved, the expressions of ROS, HIF-1α and AQP4 were decreased, and the expression/activity of Na+/K+-ATPase was increased. CONCLUSION Ionizing radiation (IR) can cause significant intestinal edema. AQP4 and Na+/K+-ATPase are the key factors of RIIE, which are regulated by ROS and HIF-1α. GQBZD can improve hypoxia and oxidative stress, regulate the expression of AQP4 and Na+/K+-ATPase, and achieve a protective effect on RIIE. This study is the first to reveal the mechanism of RIIE.

Abstract
Eight previously undescribed diterpenoids, rosins A-H, and nine known diterpenoids were isolated from the resin from Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis (A.Chev.) Gaussen ex Bui (Pinaceae) extracted with 95% ethanol. Their structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, J-based configuration analysis (JBCA), NOESY spectra, calculated NMR chemical shifts and electronic circular dichroic (ECD) spectra. All compounds were evaluated for their protective effects in LPS-treated human normal lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B), and the cell viability was significantly increased after treatment with compounds 5, 10, 12, or 15 at a concentration of 10 μM.

Abstract
There are numerous factors restricting wide application of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in dairy industry, causing urgent demands for novel bioprotectants. Protective effects and metabolites of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis (L. lactis) from ultraviolet (UV)-induced supernatant were investigated and the protective mechanism was explored. The strain viability of the group treated with the supernatant of continuous UV irradiation (V1) and the group with intermittent UV irradiation (V2) was 8.45 and 14.13 times of the control group, respectively. Further exploration on the protective of L. lactis supernatant, under different dose of UV treatment, showed it was dose-dependent. The condition for the supernatant with best protective effect was vertical distance 50.00 cm, horizontal distance 25.00 cm, intermittent UV irradiation (30 s interval 30 s) for 4.5 min (V2), which was chose for untargeted metabolite analysis. And that in V1 was for comparative study. There were 181 up-regulated metabolites in V1 and 161 up-regulated metabolites in V2, respectively. Most of the up-regulated metabolites were related to secondary metabolite synthesis, environmental microbial metabolism, antibiotic synthesis and amino acid biosynthesis. Notably, production of dithiothreitol (DTT) in V2 was 65.2-fold higher than that in the control group. Trehalose in ABC transporter pathway was also up-regulated in the metabolites induced by UV. Results indicated that L. lactis could adapt to the UV stress by adjusting metabolic pathways and producing special metabolites to protect itself. This research offers the basis for robust strain development and contributes to initial study on potential bioprotectant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acetaminophen overdose causes renal injury via oxidative stress and apoptosis induction. Carvacrol has several pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation and anti-apoptotic effect. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effect of carvacrol on acetaminophen-induced renal damage in rats. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided to five groups (n = 8) including control, carvacrol 10 mg/kg, acetaminophen, acetaminophen + carvacrol 5 mg/kg, and acetaminophen + carvacrol 10 mg/kg. Animals received a single dose of acetaminophen (500 mg/kg), then were treated with carvacrol for 1 week (daily). Afterwards, renal blood flow (RBF), mean arterial pressure, renal perfusion pressure, renal vascular resistance (RVR), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine were measured. Also, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity levels were measured in the kidney tissue. Hematoxylin and eosin method was used for histological assessment. The Western blotting analysis was used to determine the Bax, Bcl-2 and cleaved caspase-3 proteins expression level in the kidney tissue. Carvacrol (10 mg/kg) significantly increased the RBF, GPx and SOD activities and also reduced the RVR, serum creatinine, BUN, and MDA in the acetaminophen + carvacrol 10 mg/kg group versus acetaminophen group (P < 0.05). Also, carvacrol significantly decreased the cleaved caspase-3, Bax proteins expression level, and kidney tissue damage score in the acetaminophen + carvacrol 10 mg/kg group versus acetaminophen group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study showed that carvacrol can attenuate the acetaminophen induced acute kidney damage via suppressing oxidative stress and apoptosis biochemical factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (Lr) on lung inflammation induced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Escherichia coli in C57BL/6 mice. METHODS C57BL/6 mice were divided into four groups: control, LPS, Lr (1 day) + LPS, and Lr (14 days) + LPS. Total and differential cells from Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid (BALF) were counted in a Neubauer 40X chamber, and pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, CXCL-1, TNF-α, TGF-β, and IL-10) were measured by ELISA assay. The analysis of whole leukocytes in blood was performed using the automated system Sysmex 800i. Morphometry of pulmonary tissue evaluated alveolar hemorrhage, alveolar collapse, and inflammatory cells. Pulmonary vascular permeability was assessed by Evans blue dye extravasation, and bronchoconstriction was evaluated in a tissue bath station. The transcription factor NF-kB was evaluated by ELISA, and its gene expression and TLR-2, TLR-4, MMP-9, MMP-12, and TIMP by PCR. RESULTS The probiotic Lr had a protective effect against the inflammatory responses induced by LPS. Lr significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cells in the airways, lung parenchyma, and blood leukocytes. Furthermore, Lr reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in BALF and the expression of TLRs, MMPs, and NF-kB in lung tissue and maintained the expression of TIMP in treated animals promoting a protective effect on lung tissue. CONCLUSIONS The results of the study indicate that pre-treatment with the probiotic Lr may be a promising way to mitigate lung inflammation in endotoxemia.

Abstract
The protective effect of antioxidant peptides from grass carp scale gelatin on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells was investigated, and the protective mechanism as well as peptide structure were studied. Pretreated with grass carp scale gelatin hydrolysates (GSGH) for 24 h significantly increased the survival rates and decreased the apoptosis rates of H2O2-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells. The increase in SOD, CAT and GPX activities, reduce in ROS level and MDA content, and weaken in damage on cell membrane and DNA could be responsible for the protective effect of GSGH on H2O2-mediated oxidative injured HepG2 cells. Peptide sequences of GSGH were analyzed by LC-ESI-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS, and results showed that most of them were low molecular weight peptide at 358-986 Da. Synergistic effect existed among antioxidant peptides and contributed to the strong antioxidant activities of GSGH.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the protective effect of dust masks worn by super absorbent polymer (SAP) dust-exposed workers and the influence of each test exercise on the protective effect of mask. Methods: In March 2017, forty nine SAP dust-exposed workers in a large chemical enterprise were selected as subjects. The respirator fitness tester was used to test the protective effect of dust mask before and after training, and the influence of each test exercise on the protective effect of dust mask was analyzed. Results: After training, the qualified rate of dust mask protective effect of SAP dust-exposed workers was 95.92% (47/49) , which was significantly higher than that before training [63.31% (32/49) ], and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=14.69, P<0.01) . When the total protective effect was qualified, the fit factor (FF) decreased significantly when speaking aloud and bending down (Z=-2.59, -4.20, P<0.01) . The qualified rates of protective effect of each exercise were significantly different (χ2=42.70, P<0.01) , among which the qualified rates of deep breath was the highest (100.00%) , and the qualified rate of bending down was the lowest (70.21%) . Conclusion: Strengthening the training of workers to wear masks correctly is helpful to improve their respiratory protection efficiency. Under the condition that the total protective effect of dust masks is qualified, workers should try to avoid unnecessary actions, especially speaking aloud and bending down frequently.

Abstract
Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is an important public health problem. DNase II is an acidic endonuclease that catalyzes the degradation of DNA into oligonucleotides. DNase II-7 has been detected at the adult stage of T. spiralis and has been examined in excretory/secretory products. Previous studies have indicated that the DNase II-7 recombinant protein has a high rate of protection against T. spiralis infection in mice. In the present study, the protective effect of DNase II-7 recombinant protein against T. spiralis infection in Large White pigs was further explored. The humoral and cellular immune responses to the DNase II-7 recombinant protein were evaluated, including the dynamic trends of specific IgG, IgG1, IgG2a and IgM antibodies levels, as well as the levels of Th1 (IFN-γ and IL-2) and Th2 (IL-10 and IL-4) cytokines in serum. Our results showed that a Th1 dominated Th1/Th2 mixed immune response was induced by the DNase II-7 recombinant protein for all the time or a short period after vaccination. And the DNase II-7 recombinant protein induced partial protection against T. spiralis infection in pigs, compared to the control group. Our results showed that the DNase II-7 recombinant protein group displayed a 45.7 % reduction in the muscle larvae burden five weeks after being challenged. This study suggested that DNaseII-7 recombinant protein could be used as a potential candidate vaccine against T. spiralis infection in pigs.

Abstract
AIMS Intestinal injury is a clinical problem related to radiotherapy or accidental exposure to ionizing radiation. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of p-coumaric acid (CA) against radiation induced intestinal injury. MAIN METHODS The present study orally administered CA to C57BL/6 male mice at 30 min before total body irradiation and continued for 3 days post irradiation. Then, the mice were sacrificed at day 3.5 or 14 after irradiation, respectively. The blood was collected to analyze the inflammatory cytokines. The antioxidant indexes of jejunum tissues were determined. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and apoptosis analysis was studied to investigate the pathological changes of the jejunum tissues. In addition, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot were carried out to determine the changes in mRNA and protein levels of jejunum tissues. KEY FINDINGS Compared with the only irradiated group, treatment with CA improved intestinal morphology and apoptosis, increased the villus height and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth. It also reduced the oxidative stress and inflammatory response. The molecular mechanism analysis showed that CA significantly inhibited the pyroptosis genes (Caspase-1, NLRP3 and AIM2) mRNA expression and improved the intestinal barrier genes expression. SIGNIFICANCE The results suggested that CA ameliorates ionizing radiation-induced intestinal injury by inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammatory response and pyroptosis.

Abstract
In this study, we tested the in vitro efficacy of a graphene oxide-chitooligosaccharide (GO-COS) complex developed to protect blueberry anthocyanins (An) from degradation by various physicochemical factors and the digestive process. We prepared a GO-COS complex to adsorb An and protect them from the destructive effects of their ambient environment. The complex protected the An under various temperature, pH, light, oxidant, and reductant conditions. We evaluated An content and composition in a simulated digestive system using the pH differential method and the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The GO-COS carrier stabilized An in the intestine and protected their peroxyl radical-scavenging capacity. Additionally, we observed a dose-response relationship between An content and cellular antioxidant activity, and simultaneous improvement of An bioavailability when the An were encapsulated in the complex. The complex inhibited HepG2 cell proliferation at the tested dose range. This study provides valuable information for stability of An-rich products.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE As a traditional Chinese medicinal, Bidens bipinnata L. has been used to treat many diseases with a long history in China. The anti-diabetic effects of extract from B. bipinnata have been demonstrated in the previous reports. AIM OF THE STUDY The protective effects of flavonoids-rich extract from B. bipinnata (BBTF) on cell damage induced by H2O2 in pancreatic β cell and its potential mechanisms were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS MTT, ROS production, nuclear staining and flow cytometry assays were adopted to determine the effects of BBTF on cell viability, production of ROS and cell apoptosis in H2O2-treated INS-1 cell. Cell apoptosis-related proteins expressions were detected by Western blot assay. RESULTS Pre-treatment of BBTF could significantly increase INS-1 cell viability, inhibit the production of intracellular ROS and reduced the characteristic features of cell apoptosis induced by H2O2 in INS-1 cells. The studies of the underlying mechanism showed that BBTF could regulate Bax and Bcl-2 proteins expressions, suppress the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK and p38, as well as down-regulate Fas and FasL proteins expressions induced by H2O2. The expressions of caspase-8, caspase-9 and caspase-3 were therefore decreased. CONCLUSION The results indicated that flavonoids-rich extract from B. bipinnata could be a natural agent in diabetic prevention and therapy.

Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex retinal disease with no viable treatment strategy. The causative mechanistic pathway for this disease is not yet clear. Therefore, it is highly warranted to screen effective drugs to treat AMD. Rapamycin are known to inhibit inflammation and has been widely used in the clinic as an immunosuppressant. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of rapamycin on the AMD retinal degeneration model. The AMD models were established by injection of 35 mg/kg sodium iodate (NaIO3) into the tail vein. Then the treated mice intraperitoneally received rapamycin (2 mg/kg) once a day. The histomorphological analysis showed that rapamycin could inhibit retinal structure damage and apoptosis. Experiments revealed that rapamycin significantly attenuated inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Our experimental results demonstrated that rapamycin has protected the retinal against degeneration induced by NaIO3. The therapeutic effect was more significant after 7 days of treatment. Therefore, our study potentially provides a powerful experimental support for the treatment of AMD.

Abstract
In Algeria, Androctonus australis hector scorpion envenomation remains a major problem of public health because of non-efficient therapy. The development of safe vaccine against scorpion venom could be one key strategy for the envenomation prevention. The irradiation of venom by γ-rays develops suitable immunogens which produced effective antivenom and safe vaccine. In this study, we investigated the ability of the irradiated toxic fraction (γ-FtoxG50) to induce long-term memory humoral response in immunized animals (mice and rabbits), by involving the long-lived plasma cells to prevent efficiently the lethality of scorpion envenomation. For this purpose, an appropriate immunization schedule was established in mice and rabbits using three (3) similar doses of γ-FtoxG50 associated with Alum adjuvant. Obtained results indicate that the long-term immunogenicity of γ-FtoxG50 is able to induce the long-term memory humoral response with a high level of specific antibodies. The long-term persistence of antibody levels could depend on bone marrow memory plasma cells. These cells produce continuously antibodies without antigen stimulus. Furthermore, an enhanced memory response was obtained post-repeated envenomation with toxic native venom that leads to improved protection of animals. Together, pre-existing protective antibodies and the activation of memory B-cells could induce a rapid neutralization of scorpion toxins and long-term protection against scorpion envenomation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE News about suicide may have either a contagion effect or a protective effect. For this reason, interventions aimed to the media are a priority. However, the effectiveness of the interventions has not yet been elucidated. The objective of the study was to evaluate comparatively the characteristics and adequacy of suicide news articles between geographical areas in which interventions aimed at media either exist or not. METHODS We evaluated suicide news articles in the four main digital media of Spain (without interventions) and Victoria, Australia (with interventions), according to Alexa (a website traffic statistics). We assessed adherence to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, avoidability, frequency, and typology of suicide news articles. The evaluation period was 6 months. Bivariate analysis was performed comparing the samples using t-test, Chi-Squared test and Fisher's exact test according to the type of variable. RESULTS We identified 378 suicide news articles: 141 in Spain and 237 in Victoria. Suicide news articles in Spain showed a lower degree of adherence to the WHO recommendations than those from Victoria (2.97 vs. 11.8; p<0.001). Mean daily number of suicide news articles was lower in Spain (0.78 vs. 1.31; p<0.001). Typology according to contents was different between both regions (p=0.045), with greater prevalence of "suicide after murder" in Spain. However, there were no differences either in avoidability, or in typology according to behaviour. CONCLUSIONS Suicide news articles are more adequate in the geographic area in which interventions aimed at media are performed. These better characteristics imply lower risk of contagion effect, greater likelihood of protective effect and, therefore, a potential beneficial effect on the suicidal behaviour in the reference population.

Abstract
The complexation of rice glutelin fibrils (RGFs) with cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) at acidic condition was investigated. The RGFs at pH 3.5 had a greatest protective effect on the thermal stability of C3G. The binding of C3G for RGFs was exothermic and driven by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The RGFs exhibited a stronger binding interaction with C3G than rice glutelin (RG), resulting from the exposure of hydrophobic groups and positive charges on the fibrils surface, and thus RGFs exhibited better protective effect on C3G. The interaction with C3G resulted in the rearrangement of polypeptide chain, thereby reducing the β-sheet content. The larger aggregates were observed in RG/RGFs-C3G complexes due to protein-polyphenols aggregation. It was noteworthy that the pre-formed RGFs were restructured into entangled aggregates due to the interaction. This study proposed a novel protein fibril to protect anthocyanins, expanding the application of anthocyanins as stable and functional ingredients in acidic food systems.

Abstract
Probiotics form a promising strategy to maintain intestinal health. Milks fermented with probiotic strains, such as the Lactobacillus paracasei ST11, are largely commercialized in Brazil and form a low-cost alternative to probiotic pharmaceutical formulations. In this study, we assessed the probiotic effects of milk fermented by L. paracasei ST11 (administered through fermented milk) in a Salmonella typhimurium infection model in BALB/c mice. We observed in this murine model that the applied probiotic conferred protective effects against S. typhimurium infection, since its administration reduced mortality, weight loss, translocation to target organs (liver and spleen) and ileum injury. Moreover, a reduction in the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ, IL-6, TNF-α and IL-17 in animals that received the probiotic before challenge was observed. Additionally, the ileum microbiota was better preserved in these animals. The present study highlights a multifactorial protective aspect of this commercial probiotic strain against a common gastrointestinal pathogen.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the world, especially in developing countries. Drug therapy is one of the main ways to treat cardiovascular diseases. Among them, great progress has been made in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases with traditional Chinese medicine. In terms of experimental research, the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been thoroughly discussed in vitro and in vivo. In terms of clinical treatment, traditional Chinese medicine with flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids as the main effective components has a definite effect on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia, angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, with high safety and good application prospects. With the further research on the effective ingredients, mechanism and adverse reactions of traditional Chinese medicine, it will be beneficial to the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, reduce side effects and promote the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Calycosin and its derivatives, the main bioactive flavonoids in Astragalus membranaceus have multiple biological effects, such as antioxidant, pro-angiogenesis, anti-tumour, and anti-inflammatory effects. Based on the above biological effects, calycosin has been shown to have good potential for cardiovascular protection. The potent antioxidant effect of calycosin may play an important role in the cardiovascular protective potential. For injured cardiac myocytes, calycosin and its derivatives can alleviate the cell damage mainly marked by the release of myocardial enzymes and reduce the death level of cardiac myocytes mainly characterized by apoptosis through various mechanisms. For vascular endothelial cells, calycosin also has multiple effects and multiple mechanisms, such as promoting vascular endothelial cell proliferation, exerting vasodilating effect and directly affecting the synthesis function of endothelial cells. The present review will address the bioactivity of calycosin in cardiovascular diseases such as protective effects on cardiac myocytes and vascular endothelial cells and elucidate main mechanism of calycosin and its derivatives to exert the above biological effects.

Abstract
Radix Astragali polysaccharide RAP has been reported to play a crucial role in hematopoiesis without a clear mechanism. In this study, RAP's effects to enhance the recovery of cyclophosphamide (Cy)-suppressed bone marrow and blood cells is confirmed in vivo first. Confocal micrographs demonstrated the interesting direct binding of FITC-RAP to hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in bone marrow. RAP protects both mice and human HSC in terms of cell morphology, proliferation, and apoptosis. RNA-sequencing and shRNA approaches revealed FOS to be a key regulator in RAP's protection. These evidences provide an unreported mechanism that RAP directly protects hematopoietic stem cells from chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression by increasing FOS expression.

Abstract
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a model probiotic strain, plays an important role in immune regulatory activity to prevent and treat intestinal inflammation or diarrhea. However, the effect of the immune modulation of LGG on macrophages to prevent Salmonella infection has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were pre-administered LGG for 7 days continuously, and then infected with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The results of the in vivo study indicated that LGG could reduce body weight loss, death rate and intestinal inflammatory response caused by S. Typhimurium. LGG also limited S. Typhimurium dissemination to liver and spleen, and thereby protected against infection. In vitro study, we observed that LGG enhanced the phagocytic and bactericidal ability of macrophages and upregulated M1 macrophage characters (e.g. iNOS, NO and IL-12) against S. Typhimurium. In addition, LGG also elevated IL-10 secretion, which was helpful to ameliorate intestinal inflammatory injury caused by S. Typhimurium. In conclusion, LGG could modulate M1 macrophage polarization and offer protective effects against S. Typhimurium infection.

Abstract
In previous studies we demonstrated that radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) is able to reduce DNA damage induced by a subsequent treatment with genotoxic agents, resembling the adaptive response, a phenomenon well known in radiobiology. In this study we report on the capability of the culture medium from SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells exposed to 1950 MHz to elicit, in recipient non-exposed cells, a reduction of menadione-induced DNA damage (P < 0.05; comet assay), indicating the capability of non-ionizing radiation to elicit a bystander effect. A comparable reduction was also detected in cultures directly exposed to the same EMF conditions (P < 0.05), confirming the adaptive response. In the same exposure conditions, we also evidenced an increase of heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) in culture medium of cells exposed to RF with respect to sham exposed ones (P < 0.05; western blot analysis), while no differences were detected in the intracellular content of hsp70. On the whole, our results evidence a protective effect of RF against menadione-induced DNA damage in directly and non-directly exposed cells, and suggest hsp70 pathway to be investigated as one of the potential candidate underpinning the interaction between RF exposure and biological systems.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a complex pathophysiological process that is often characterized as a blood circulation disorder caused due to various factors (such as traumatic shock, surgery, organ transplantation, burn, and thrombus). Severe metabolic dysregulation and tissue structure destruction are observed upon restoration of blood flow to the ischemic tissue. Theoretically, IRI can occur in various tissues and organs, including the kidney, liver, myocardium, and brain, among others. The advances made in research regarding restoring tissue perfusion in ischemic areas have been inadequate with regard to decreasing the mortality and infarct size associated with IRI. Hence, the clinical treatment of patients with severe IRI remains a thorny issue. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is a member of a superfamily of nuclear transcription factors activated by agonists and is a promising therapeutic target for ameliorating IRI. Therefore, this review focuses on the role of PPARγ in IRI. The protective effects of PPARγ, such as attenuating oxidative stress, inhibiting inflammatory responses, and antagonizing apoptosis, are described, envisaging certain therapeutic perspectives.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE News about suicide may cause a contagion effect or a protective effect. For this reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published recommendations on responsible media coverage of suicide. Certain characteristics of suicide news articles and their frequency have been associated to such effects. Despite their importance, these aspects have been scarcely studied in the Spanish media. The objective of this study was to identify the characteristics of suicide news articles in the Spanish digital media. METHODS We identified the adherence to WHO recommendations, avoidability, frequency, and typology of suicide news articles in the four main spanish digital media (El País, El Mundo, El Confidencial and ABC), according to Alexa (a website traffic statistics). Adherence was evaluated from a dichotomous and continuous perspective by using an ad hoc scale, and avoidability was conceptually defined. The evaluation period was 6 months (11/1/2016-04/30/2017). The statistical program used was R Core Team (2017). RESULTS We analysed 141 suicide news articles. Of these, 99.12% did not adhere to the recommendations, the degree of adherence was 2.97 (95% CI, 2.19-3.75; range between +22 and -22), 34.51% were avoidable, 34.04% were about "suicide after murder", and 90.04% about death by suicide. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to WHO recommendations is very low in suicide news articles. Furthermore, almost one third of them are avoidable. The identified profile points out the need for interventions aimed at the media. Besides, it allows adjusting their contents to the identified specific needs.

Abstract
Salmonellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that poses a serious threat to the reproduction of livestock and poultry and the health of young animals. Probiotics including Bacillus species, have received increasing attention as a substitute for antibiotics. In this study, chicks infected with Salmonella were fed feed supplemented with the BSH to observe the pathological changes in the liver, detect the number of viable bacteria in the liver and spleen, and record the death of the chicks. The results showed that BSH could reduce the pathological changes in the liver and the invasion of Salmonella into the liver and spleen of chicks. In addition, the survival rate of chicks in the BSH experimental group was 60%, while that in the infected control group was 26%, indicating that BSH had a protective effect on chicks infected with Salmonella. Finally, the fecal microflora of 9-day-old chicks was analyzed by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that Salmonella infection could cause intestinal flora changes, while BSH could alleviate this change. In addition, BSH also promoted the proliferation of Lactobacillus salivarius in the cecum of chick. This study emphasized that BSH has anti- Salmonella infection effects in chickens and can be used as a candidate microecological preparation strain.

Abstract
Background Carbon dots (CDs) with multifaceted advantages have provided hope for development brand-new nanodrug for treating thorny diseases. This study developed a green and simple calcination method to prepare novel CDs as promising drug for psoriasis treatment. The as-prepared CDs using Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex (PCC) as sole precursor were characterized by a series of methods, mainly including electron microscopy, optical technology and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results Results displayed that fluorescence (Quantum yield = 5.63%) and nontoxic PCC-based CDs (PCC-CDs) with abundant chemical groups exhibited solubility and tiny sizes at average of (1.93 ± 0.53) nm, which may be beneficial for its inherent biological activity. Moreover, by using the typical imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like skin mouse model, we firstly demonstrated the pronounced anti-psoriasis activity of as-prepared PCC-CDs on ameliorating the appearance, psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) scores as well as histopathological morphology of both back skin tissues and right ears in IMQ-induced mouse. Further potential mechanisms behind the anti-psoriasis activities may be related to suppress M1 polarization and relatively promote M2 polarization of macrophage both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion These results suggested that PCC-CDs have potential to be an anti-psoriasis candidate for clinical applications to treat psoriasis, which not only provided an evidence for further broadening the biological application of CDs, but also provided a potential hope for application nanodrugs to treat thorny diseases. Abstract
Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that cellular antioxidant systems play essential roles in retarding oxidative stress-related diseases, such as Parkinson's disease. Because nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a chief regulator of cellular antioxidant systems, small molecules with Nrf2-activating ability may be promising neuroprotective agents. Avenanthramide-2c (Aven-2c), avenanthramide-2f (Aven-2f) and avenanthramide-2p (Aven-2p) are the most abundant avenanthramides in oats, and they have been documented to possess multiple pharmacological benefits. In this work, we synthesized these three compounds and evaluated their cytoprotective effect against oxidative stress-induced PC12 cell injuries. Aven-2c displayed the best protective potency among them. Aven-2c conferred protection on PC12 cells by scavenging free radicals and activating the Nrf2-ARE signaling pathway. Pretreatment of PC12 cells with Aven-2c efficiently enhanced Nrf2 nuclear accumulation and evoked the expression of a set of cytoprotective molecules. The mechanistic study also supports that Nrf2 activation is the molecular basis for the cellular action of Aven-2c. Collectively, this study demonstrates that Aven-2c is a potent Nrf2 agonist, shedding light on the potential usage of Aven-2c in the treatment of neuroprotective diseases.

Abstract
Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes a very wide range of disease severity: from completely asymptomatic to fatal, and the reasons for that are not well understood; however, there are some data that show vitamin D may have a protective effect. Methods To retrieve the vitamin D levels data, the authors analyzed the vitamin D European population data compiled by 2019 European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) statement on vitamin D status published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. For the data set to be used for analysis, only recently published data that included general adult population of both genders aged 40–65 years or wider and must have included the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. Results There were data sets from 10 countries that fitted the criteria and were analyzed. Severe vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25(OH)D less than 25 nmol/L (10 ng/dL). Pearson correlation analysis between death rate per million of population from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency showed a strong correlation with r = 0.79, p = 0.007. Over time, correlation strengthened, and r coefficient asymptotically increased. After adjusting for countries’ age structure and per capita health expenditures, multiple linear regression analysis showed that higher prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased mortality. Each 1% increase in prevalence increased deaths by 55 per million (95% confidence interval, CI 8–102), p = 0.03. Conclusion The authors recommend universal screening for vitamin D deficiency, and further investigation of Vitamin D supplementation in randomized control studies, which may lead to possible treatment or prevention of COVID-19.

Abstract
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the ability of ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) from Ephedra fragilis to function as a protective agent against hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative damage in Tetrahymena pyriformis. The cells were preincubated with EAF (50-200 μg/mL) or ascorbic acid (50 μg/mL) for 24 h, followed by incubation with 50% H2O2 inhibitory concentration for 48 h. Cell viability was assessed using trypan exclusion method. Cell morphology and mobility, antioxidant enzymes activities (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR)), malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO) levels, DNA fragmentation and metabolic enzymes activities (succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase (NCCR)) were investigated. Our results indicate that, pretreatment of T. pyriformis cells with EAF improved the cell viability, restored normal cell mobility and morphology, decreased the levels of both MDA and PCO level, prevent DNA fragmentation and enhanced the activity of antioxidant (CAT, SOD and GR) and metabolic (SDH and NCCR) enzymes in H2O2 damaged cells. In conclusion, these results suggest for the first time that E. fragilis is a promising source of natural antioxidants, that could offer protection against oxidative stress and should be further exploited for its use in clinical medicine.

Abstract
Native and preheated whey protein isolates (WPI) and casein (at 55 °C-90 °C) were used as protective carriers. Three bioactive compounds, including (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallte (EGCG), gallic acid, and vitamin C, were added to enhance the stability of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G). Under acidic (pH 3.6) and neutral (pH 6.3) conditions, both native and preheated milk proteins showed significant protective effect on C3G. WPI preheated at 85 °C presented the best protective effect on C3G under neutral condition by reducing its thermal, oxidation, and photo degradation rates 25.0%, 38.0%, and 41.1%, respectively. The addition of vitamin C into the protein-anthocyanin solutions accelerated the color loss of C3G, whereas EGCG and gallic acid improved its thermal stability. Among the bioactive compounds, gallic acid provided the most significant protective effect on C3G by further decreasing the thermal degradation rate of C3G 44.6% as a result of the formation of 85 °C preheated WPI-gallic acid-C3G complexes.

Abstract
Trichinellosis is caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis), which is an important public health problem. In this study, a gene encoding a serine protease from adult worms of T. spiralis (Ts-Adsp) was screened from a cDNA library of adult worms and was cloned and expressed in a prokaryotic expression system. The gene Ts-Adsp was subcloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pcDNA3.1(+), which was named pcDNA3.1(+)-Adsp. Previous studies have found that recombinant Ts-Adsp protein (rTs-Adsp) can elicit partial protection against T. spiralis infection in mice. Our aim was to explore the protective effect of combining a DNA vaccine with the rTs-Adsp protein against T. spiralis. One week after the last vaccination, the serum and spleen were obtained. The levels of IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a and cytokine production in serum and spleen cells were analyzed. The results showed that the levels of humoral and cell-mediated immune responses increased in the pcDNA3.1(+)-Adsp/rTs-Adsp group mice and demonstrated that a Th1/Th2 mixed immune response was induced by pcDNA3.1(+)-Adsp/rTs-Adsp after vaccination. Moreover, mice vaccinated with pcDNA3.1(+)-Adsp/rTs-Adsp displayed a 69.50% reduction in muscle larvae burden. This study suggested that mixed immunity could improve the muscle larvae reduction rate.

Abstract
Objective The paper intends to study the protective effects of sulforaphane (SF) on acute alcoholic hepatic injury in mice by intragastric administration of SF, aerobic exercise and the approach of SF integrated with aerobic exercise. Methodology 60 NIH mice were randomly divided into 6 groups of equal number according to their body weight and were intragastrically administrated with 50% ethanol. The serum and liver indexes of each group of mice were detected, and the liver was stained with oil red O for pathological examination. Results Compared with the model group, the serum TG and the ratio of liver to body weight of the model mice that suffered from acute alcoholic hepatic injury could be significantly decreased in the group that practiced aerobic exercise, the group administered with SF, and the group treated with the approach of SF integrated with aerobic exercise (P < 0.05). The contents of TG and MDA in liver could be significantly decreased (P < 0.05) and SOD activity could be significantly increased (P < 0.05) both in the group administered with SF and the group treated with the approach of SF integrated with aerobic exercise. Serum VLDL (P < 0.05) could also be significantly reduced in the group treated with the approach of SF integrated with aerobic exercise. Conclusion Both SF and aerobic exercise could alleviate alcohol-induced acute alcoholic hepatic injury in mice possibly thanks to the working mechanism related to antioxidant stress that reduced the harm posed by alcohol on hepatic cells. In addition, the protective effect of SF on acute alcoholic hepatic injury in mice was stronger than that of aerobic exercise, while the approach of SF integrated with aerobic exercise had the strongest protective effect on acute alcoholic hepatic injury in mice.
