Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between liver fibrosis and inflammation and Mac-2-binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) other than hepatitis C remains uncertain, owing to the limitations of qualitative methods. Here, we evaluated the influence of liver fibrosis and inflammation on quantitative M2BPGi (M2BPGi-Qt) in CLD, considering each etiology. METHODS We recruited 1373 patients with CLD. To evaluate the influence of liver fibrosis and inflammation on M2BPGi-Qt levels, we assessed M2BPGi-Qt levels at each fibrosis and activity stage within different etiologies of CLD based on pathological findings. Subsequently, we evaluated if the accuracy of fibrosis staging based on M2BPGi-Qt could be improved by considering the influence of liver inflammation. RESULTS In patients with viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and primary biliary cholangitis, the median M2BPGi-Qt levels increased liver fibrosis progression. Median M2BPGi-Qt levels were not associated with the degree of fibrosis in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Median M2BPGi-Qt levels increased with the progression of liver activity in all etiologies. A significant difference was found at each stage in AIH. Considering the liver inflammation, we established an algorithm, M2BPGi-Qt, to determine the alanine aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio (MAP-R) in liver cirrhosis (LC). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of MAP-R was higher than that of the M2BPGi-Qt for detecting LC (AUC MAP-R = 0.759 and M2BPGi-Qt = 0.700, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The quantitative measurement system for M2BPGi depends on liver fibrosis and inflammation, regardless of etiology. Liver inflammation complicates the interpretation of M2BPGi-Qt results when assessing the fibrosis stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the quantitative measurement of Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) levels using the new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. METHODS The data of a total of 347 patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and 150 health volunteers from 13 locations in Japan were evaluated. The quantitative system for measuring M2BPGi-Qt levels was based on a new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. We evaluated the reproducibility and quantitation range in quantitative M2BPGi-Qt measurement. We also investigated the confidence ratio of M2BPGi-Qt levels measured by the new quantitative system to M2BPGi levels measured by the current semi-quantitative system for validating the clinical utility of the new method. RESULTS The reproducibility of M2BPGi-Qt in HCV samples with negative, positive 1+, and positive 2+ was 0.77 ± 0.02 AU/mL, 2.25 ± 0.03 AU/mL, and 6.55 ± 0.21 AU/mL, respectively, and the corresponding coefficient of variation (CV)s were 2.1%, 1.3%, and 3.2%, respectively. The range of quantification assessment resulted that all CVs showed less than 5% in investigated range. Sample stability testing found that the mean percentage difference between the pre- and post-storage values of 6 samples ranged between 96.2 and 103.9%. The correlation coefficient between M2BPGi and M2BPGi-Qt in patients with HCV and the healthy volunteers was 0.986 and 0.991, respectively. M2BPGi-Qt could be quantitatively assessed in a patient with over 20 C.O.I. CONCLUSION Compared with qualitative methods, the M2BPGi quantitative measurement system could provide a numerical value unaffected by interpretation bias, and measurements are more precise at high M2BPGi levels.

Abstract
Influenza virus transmission is a crucial factor in understanding the spread of the virus within populations and developing effective control strategies. Studying the transmission patterns of influenza virus allows for better risk assessment and prediction of disease outbreaks. By monitoring the spread of the virus and identifying high-risk populations and geographic areas, it is possible to allocate resources more effectively, implement timely interventions, and provide targeted healthcare interventions to diminish the burden of influenza virus on vulnerable populations. Theoretical models of virus transmission are used to study and simulate of influenza virus spread within populations. These models aim to capture the complex dynamics of transmission, including factors such as population size, contact patterns, infectiousness, and susceptibility. Animal models serve as valuable tools for studying the dynamics of influenza virus transmission. This article presents a brief overview of existing research on the qualitative and quantitative study of influenza virus transmission in animal models. We discuss the methodologies employed, key insights gained from these studies, and their relevance.

Abstract
Background Various factors have been reported as risk factors for chronic subdural hematomas (CSDH) recurrence. However, few studies have quantitatively evaluated the impact of CSDH locations and burr hole positions on recurrence. This study aimed to reveal the relation between CSDH recurrence and the locations of CSDH and burr holes. Methods Initial single burr hole surgeries for CSDH with a drainage tube between April 2005 and October 2021 at Otemae Hospital were enrolled. Patients' medical records, CSDH volume, and CSDH computed tomography values (CTV) were evaluated. The locations of CSDH and burr holes were assessed using Montreal Neurological Institute coordinates. Results A total of 223 patients were enrolled, including 34 patients with bilateral CSDH, resulting in 257 surgeries investigated. The rate of CSDH recurrence requiring reoperation (RrR) was 13.5%. The RrR rate was significantly higher in patients aged ≥76 years, those with bilateral CSDH, and those with postoperative hemiplegia. In RrR, the preoperative CSDH volume was significantly larger, and CTV was significantly smaller. The locations of CSDH had no influence on recurrence. However, in RrR, the locations of burr holes were found to be more lateral and more ventral. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that bilateral CSDH, more ventral burr hole positions, and postoperative hemiplegia were risk factors for recurrence. Conclusions The locations of burr holes are associated with CSDH recurrence. In RrR, CSDH profiles tend to show a larger volume and reduced CTV. Hemiplegia after burr hole surgery serves as a warning sign for RrR.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the association between posterior tibial slope (PTS) and preoperative pivot-shift phenomenon in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-injured knees. METHODS Fifty unilateral ACL-injured patients (mean age: 28.0 ± 11.4 years, 29 males) who underwent ACL reconstruction were retrospectively included. Patients with a history of injury to the ipsilateral knee joint, concomitant ligament injuries with ACL injury, and/or more than one year from injury to surgery, were excluded. Pivot-shift tests were performed preoperatively under general anaesthesia using an electromagnetic measurement system, and tibial acceleration (m/s2) during the posterior reduction of the tibia was measured. Medial and lateral PTS (°) were measured respectively using high-resolution CT images taken two weeks after surgery. Lateral-medial slope asymmetry was calculated by subtracting medial PTS from lateral PTS (lateral-medial PTS) and we evaluated the correlation between each PTS parameter (medial PTS, lateral PTS, and lateral-medial slope asymmetry) and tibial acceleration during the pivot-shift test. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS Medial PTS was 4.9 ± 2.0°, and lateral PTS was 5.2 ± 1.9°. The lateral-medial slope asymmetry was 0.3 ± 1.6° (range: -2.9 to 3.8). Tibial acceleration during the pivot-shift test in the ACL-injured knee was 1.6 ± 0.1 m/s2. Preoperative tibial acceleration was positively correlated with lateral PTS (r = 0.436, p < 0.01), and lateral-medial slope asymmetry (r = 0.443, p < 0.01), while no significant correlation was found between preoperative tibial acceleration and medial PTS (r = 0.06, p = 0.70). CONCLUSION Preoperative greater tibial acceleration during the pivot-shift test was associated with steeper lateral PTS and greater lateral-medial slope asymmetry in ACL-injured knees. These findings improve our understanding of anterolateral rotatory knee laxity by linking tibial bony morphology to quantitative measurement of pivot-shift phenomenon. Surgeons should be aware that not only lateral PTS but also lateral-medial slope asymmetry are the factors associated with preoperative pivot-shift. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide a quantitative assessment of diffusion-weighted MR images of the prostate through identification of PIDS which clearly represents artifacts in the data. We calculated the percentage and distribution of PIDS in prostate DWI and compare the amount of PIDS between mpMRI images obtained with and without an endorectal coil. METHODS This IRB approved retrospective study (from 03/03/2014 to 03/10/2020), included 40 patients scanned with endorectal coil (ERC) and 40 without ER coil (NERC). PIDS contains any voxel where: (1) the diffusion signal increases despite an increase in b-value; and/or (2) apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is more than 3.0 μm2/ms (the ADC of pure water at 37 °C and it is physically implausible for any material to have a higher ADC). PIDS for transition zone (TZ) and peripheral zone (PZ) was calculated using an in-house MATLAB program. DWI images were quantitatively inspected for noise, motion, and distortion. T-test was used to compare the difference between PIDS levels in ERC versus NERC and ANOVA to compare the PIDS levels in the anatomic zones. The images were evaluated by a fellowship-trained radiologist in Abdominal Imaging with more than 10 years of experience in reading prostate MRI. This was tested only in prostate in this study. RESULTS 80 patients (58 ± 8 years old, 80 men) were evaluated. The percentage of voxels exhibiting PIDS was 17.1 ± 8.1% for the ERC cohort and 22.2 ± 15.5% for the NERC cohort. PIDS for NERC versus ERC were not significantly different (p = 0.14). The apex and base showed similar percentages of PIDS in ERC (p = 0.30) and NERC (p = 0.86). The mid (13.8 ± 8.6%) in ERC showed lower values (p = 0.02) of PIDS compared to apex (19.9 ± 11.1%) and base (17.5 ± 8.3%). CONCLUSION PIDS maps provide a spatially resolved quantitative quality assessment for prostate DWI. Average PIDS over the entire prostate were similar for the ERC and NERC cohorts, and did not differ significantly across prostate zones. However, for many of the patients, PIDS was focally much higher in specific prostate zones. PIDS assessment can guide Radiologist's evaluation of images and the development of improved DWI sequences.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of tibial tunnel coalition on knee rotatory laxity and clinical outcomes after double-bundle (DB) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. METHODS Forty-one patients who underwent anatomic DB ACL reconstruction were included prospectively. Three-dimensional computed tomography of the knee joint was obtained at approximately 1 year postoperatively to determine if tunnel coalition occurred. After excluding seven cases of femoral tunnel coalition, two groups were established based on the existence of a tibial tunnel coalition. The pivot-shift test was quantitatively evaluated on the basis of tibial acceleration preoperatively and at 1 year postoperatively. Two subjective scores, the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective and Lysholm scores, were also collected. The pivot-shift measurement and subjective scores were compared between the ACL-reconstructed knees with and without tibial tunnel coalition. The independent t test, Pearson's chi-square test, and Student t tests were used in data analysis. RESULTS Twenty-one knees had tibial tunnel coalition (group C), whereas 13 knees did not have tunnel coalition(group N). Pivot-shift was significantly diminished postoperatively in both groups on the basis of the clinical examination and quantitative evaluations (p < 0.05). However, there was a small but significant difference in tibial acceleration demonstrating larger pivot-shift in group C (1.0 ± 0.6 m/s2) than in group N (0.5 ± 0.3 m/s2, p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the IKDC subjective and Lysholm scores (both n.s.). CONCLUSION When the tibial tunnel coalition occurs after DB ACL reconstruction, knee rotatory laxity may not be restored in ACL-reconstructed knees, as expected in those without tunnel coalition. It is recommended that two tibial tunnels should be created separately when performing DB-ACL reconstruction to achieve better control of rotatory knee laxity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
Amplitude modulation scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (AM-SKPM) is widely used to measure the contact potential difference (CPD) between probe and samples in ambient or dry inert atmosphere. However, AM-SKPM is generally considered quantitatively inaccurate due to crosstalk between the cantilever and the sample. Here we demonstrate that the accuracy of AM-SKPM-based CPD measurements is drastically improved by exciting the SKPM probe at its second eigenmode. In the second eigenmode of oscillation, there exists a stationary node at the cantilever towards its free end, across which the displacement bears opposite signs; therefore driving the SKPM probe at its second eigenmode helps to partially cancel the virtual work done by the cantilever and reduce the crosstalk effect. The improvement in accuracy is experimentally confirmed with interdigitating electrodes calibration samples as well as practical samples such as the cross-section of wafer-bonded GaAs/GaN heterojunction.

Abstract
Purpose High-grade pivot shift in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injured knee is a risk factor for postoperative residual pivot shift. Procedures in addition to ACL reconstruction such as anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction have been performed for patients with a high-risk of residual pivot shift. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of ALL reconstruction to primary double-bundle ACL reconstruction in patients with preoperative high-grade pivot shift to improve stability as evaluated by quantitative measurement. Methods Patients with ACL injuries who showed preoperative grade 3 subjective pivot shift and who underwent primary double-bundle ACL reconstruction combined with ALL reconstructions were retrospectively enrolled. Anterior tibial translation (ATT) in the Lachman test, and acceleration and external rotational angular velocity (ERAV) in the pivot shift were measured as quantitative values. Quantitative values before surgical intervention for ACL-injured knees (ACLD) and uninjured contralateral knees (intact), after temporary fixation of the isolated ACL grafts (ACLR), and subsequently after temporary fixation of both ACL and ALL grafts (ACLR + ALLR) were measured with the patient under general anaesthesia. Results In total, 18 patients were included. The ATT was lower in ACLR and ACLR + ALLR than in intact (P = .008 and .005), while there was no significant difference between ACLR and ACLR + ALLR (P > .05). The acceleration of ACLR + ALLR was lower than that for ACLR (P = .008), while there was no significant difference between intact and ACLR or ACLR + ALLR (P > .05). The ERAV of ACLR was higher than that of intact (P < .001), while that of ACLR + ALLR was lower than that of ACLR (P < 0.001), and there was no significant difference in ERAV between intact and ACLR + ALLR (P > 0.05). Conclusion According to quantitative assessment of the pivot shift, the addition of ALL reconstruction to primary double-bundle ACL reconstruction improved residual knee instability and restored knee stability during surgery. Combination of ALL reconstruction with primary double-bundle ACL reconstruction was effective for patients with ACL injuries exhibiting a preoperative grade 3 subjective pivot shift. Abstract
The determination of the monomer fractions in polyhydroxyalkanoates is of great importance for research on microbial-produced plastic material. The development of new process designs, the validation of mathematical models, and intelligent control strategies for production depend enormously on the correctness of the analyzed monomer fractions. Most of the available detection methods focus on the determination of the monomer fractions of the homopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Only a few can analyze the monomer content in copolymers such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), which usually require expensive measuring devices, a high preparation time or the use of environmentally harmful halogenated solvents such as chloroform or dichloromethane. This work presents a fast, simple, and inexpensive method for the analysis of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) with high-performance liquid chromatography. Samples from a bioreactor experiment for the production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) with Cupriavidus necator H16 were examined regarding their monomer content using the new method and gas chromatography analysis, one of the most frequently used methods in literature. The results from our new method were validated using gas chromatography measurements and show excellent agreement. Key points ∙ The presented HPLC method is an inexpensive, fast and environmentally friendly alternative to existing methods for quantification of monomeric composition of PHBV. ∙ Validation with state of the art GC measurement exhibits excellent agreement over a broad range of PHBV monomer fractions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dynamic myocardial CT perfusion (CTP) has emerged as a potential strategy to combine anatomical and functional evaluation in a single modality. However, this method results in a high radiation dose. METHODS Dynamic CTP was performed in 56 patients with suspected or known ischemic heart disease of whom 48 had complete CT-data. Datasets with reduced sampling rate of 2- and 3 RR-intervals (2RR and 3RR) were constructed post hoc. Myocardial blood flow (MBF) estimates from the 2RR and 3RR datasets were compared with estimates based on the full dataset (1RR) using the two one-sided test of equivalence for paired samples. RESULTS Significant equivalence was found for rest MBFLV (p < 0.001), stress MBFLV (p < 0.001) and for the CFRLV (p = 0.005) when comparing 2RR blood flow estimates with the results based on the 1RR dataset. The 2RR reconstruction protocol led to an estimated reduction in radiation dose of 35.4 ± 3.8%. CONCLUSION MBF can be quantitated with dynamic CTP using a sampling strategy of one volume for every second heartbeat. This strategy could lead to a significant reduction in radiation dose.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the passive duction force (PDF) in extraocular muscles (EOMs) in patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT) using a quantitative tension-measuring device. METHODS This prospective, case-control study enrolled 25 patients with IXT and 26 age- and sex-matched controls. PDF was measured under general anesthesia as the eyeball was rotated medially or laterally away from the direction of the force being tested. The preferred eye for fixation was determined using a cover-uncover test. RESULTS The PDF in the IXT and control groups were 60.9 g and 52.1 g, respectively, for the lateral rectus (LR) (p = 0.046) and 53.0 g and 48.8 g for the medial rectus (MR) (p = 0.293). When the eyes were examined separately in the IXT group, the PDF of LR was larger in the nonpreferred eye for fixation than in the control group (p = 0.039), whereas there was no difference in the preferred eye for fixation (p = 0.216). Additionally, the relative PDF of LR in the nonpreferred eye compared to the ipsilateral PDF of MR was positively associated with the duration of manifest deviation (p = 0.042) and the average angle of the near and far deviations (p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS The PDF in the LR in patients with IXT in the nonpreferred eye for fixation was larger than normal and could increase with the duration of manifest deviation and the angle of deviation. Evaluating the PDF in EOMs could provide information that is useful for managing strabismus and understanding its pathophysiology.

Abstract
PURPOSE Aim of this study is to establish an objective and easily applicable method that will allow clinicians to quantitatively assess scapular dyskinesis during clinical examination using a computer tablet software. Hypothesis is that dyskinetic scapulae present greater motion-deviation from the thoracic wall-compared to the non-dyskinetic ones and that the software will be able to record those differences. METHODS Twenty-five patients and 19 healthy individuals were clinically evaluated for the presence of dyskinesis or not. According to the clinical diagnosis, the observations were divided into three groups; A. Dyskinetic scapulae with symptoms (n = 25), B. Contralateral non-dyskinetic scapulae without symptoms (n = 25), C. Healthy control scapulae (n = 38). Then, all individuals were tested using a tablet with the PIVOT™ image-based analysis software (PIVOT, Impellia, Pittsburgh, PA, USA). The motion produced by the scapula medial border and inferior angle deviation from the thoracic wall was recorded. RESULTS The deviation of the medial border and inferior angle of the scapula from the thoracic wall was 24.6 ± 7.3 mm in Group A, 14.7 ± 4.9 mm in Group B, and 12.4 ± 5.2 mm in Group C. The motion recorded in the dyskinetic scapulae group was significantly greater than both the contralateral non-dyskinetic scapulae group (p < 0.01) and the healthy control scapulae group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The PIVOT™ software was efficient to detect significant differences in the motion between dyskinetic and non-dyskinetic scapulae. This system can support the clinical diagnosis of dyskinesis with a numeric value, which not only contributes to scapula dyskinesis grading but also to the evaluation of the progress and efficacy of the applied treatment, thus providing a feedback to the clinician and the patient. Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the postoperative rotatory knee laxity between ACL-reconstructed knees with different meniscus treatments using an electromagnetic pivot-shift measurement. METHODS Forty-six patients with unilateral ACL reconstructions were enrolled (21 males/25 females, 25 ± 12 y.o.). Concomitant meniscus tears, if any, were repaired whenever possible during primary ACL reconstruction. At 1 year postoperatively, pivot-shift test was performed under anaesthesia during screw removal surgery and quantitatively evaluated by tibial acceleration using an electromagnetic system. The acceleration was compared between ACL-reconstructed knees with different meniscal treatments: intact, repaired and unrepaired. RESULTS A concomitant meniscus tear was found in 28 knees preoperatively: lateral tears in 11 knees, medial tears in 11 knees and both medial and lateral tears in 6 knees. Postoperatively, 19 ACL-reconstructed knees had a repaired meniscus for either medial, lateral or bilateral menisci tears, and 18 knees had intact menisci pre- and post-operatively. Meanwhile, nine lateral meniscus tears were irreparable and treated by partial meniscectomy or left in situ. ACL-reconstructed knees with unrepaired lateral menisci had significantly larger pivot-shift acceleration (0.9 ± 0.7 m/s2) than those with intact menisci (0.5 ± 0.2 m/s2, p < 0.05), whereas rotatory knee laxity was similar between the knees with fully repaired menisci (0.6 ± 0.3 m/s2) and intact menisci (n.s.). CONCLUSION An unrepaired lateral meniscus tear in an ACL-reconstructed knee could lead to remaining pivot-shift postoperatively. A concomitant meniscus tear should be repaired during ACL reconstruction to restore normal rotational laxity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic Study, Level III.

Abstract
Background Spasticity is a key motor impairment that affects many hemispheric stroke survivors. Intramuscular botulinum toxin (BT) injections are used widely to clinically manage spasticity-related symptoms in stroke survivors by chemically denervating muscle fibers from their associated motor neurons. In this study, we sought to understand how BT affects muscle activation, motor unit composition and voluntary force generating capacity over a time period of 3 months. Our purpose was to characterize the time course of functional changes in voluntary muscle activity in stroke survivors who are undergoing BT therapy as part of their physician-prescribed clinical plan. Method Our assessment of the effects of BT was based on the quantification of surface electromyogram (sEMG) recordings in the biceps brachii (BB), an upper arm muscle and of voluntary contraction force. We report here on voluntary force and sEMG responses during isometric elbow contractions across consecutive recording sessions, spread over 12 weeks in three segments, starting with a preliminary session performed just prior to the BT injection. At predetermined time points, we conducted additional clinical assessments and we also recorded from the contralateral limbs of our stroke cohort. Eight subjects were studied for approximately 86 experimental recording sessions on both stroke-affected and contralateral sides. Results We recorded an initial reduction in force and sEMG in all subjects, followed by a trajectory with a progressive return to baseline over a maximum of 12 weeks, although the minimum sEMG and minimum force were not always recorded at the same time point. Three participants were able to complete only one to two segments. Slope values of the sEMG-force relations were also found to vary across the different time segments. While sEMG-force slopes provide assessments of force generation capacity of the BT injected muscle, amplitude histograms from novel sEMG recordings during the voluntary tasks provide additional insights about differential actions of BT on the overall motor unit (MU) population over time. Conclusions The results of our study indicate that there are potential short term as well as long term decrements in muscle control and activation properties after BT administration on the affected side of chronic stroke survivors. Muscle activation levels as recorded using sEMG, did not routinely return to baseline even at three months’ post injection. The concurrent clinical measures also did not follow the same time course, nor did they provide the same resolution as our experimental measures. It follows that even 12 weeks after intramuscular BT injections muscle recovery may not be complete, and may thereby contribute to pre-existing paresis.

Abstract
In the pharmaceutical industry, amorphous solid dispersion can be utilized to enhance the solubility, hence bioavailability, of poorly solubility active pharmaceutical ingredients owing to the higher free energy of the amorphous state. Measuring the concentration, size and spatial distribution of crystalline API particles that may be present in amorphous solid dispersions (ASD) is critical to understanding product performance and developing improved formulations. In this study X-Ray Microscopy (XRM) was used to nondestructively measure these attributes in ASDs. Model tablets of amorphous fenofibrate in a copovidone matrix spiked with known concentrations of crystalline fenofibrate were examined by XRM to measure the concentration, size and distribution of crystalline particles in the tablets. Data collection and analysis conditions were evaluated and reported. XRM images showed contrast between the crystalline API and the amorphous matrix of the tablet. Image analysis using basic thresholding provided quantitative and distribution data of the crystallinity present. Crystals as small as 10 μm were detected and practical quantitation limits of 0.2% (w/w of total tablet) crystallinity were demonstrated. The aspects of manual data thresholding were tested for operator influence and threshold selection and found to be robust. This technique was demonstrated to provide quantitative measures of crystallinity below standard X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) techniques, provide three-dimensional information regarding size, shape and distribution of API crystals and can be performed nondestructively.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the advantages of ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) for automatic bronchial segmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study was approved by the Institutional Review Board, and written informed consent was waived. Thirty-three consecutive patients who underwent chest CT by a U-HRCT scanner were enrolled. In each patient, CT data were reconstructed by two different protocols: 512 × 512 matrix with 0.5-mm slice thickness (conventional HRCT mode) and 1024 × 1024 matrix with 0.25-mm slice thickness (U-HRCT mode). We used a research workstation to compare the two CT modes with regard to the numbers and total lengths of the automatically segmented bronchi. RESULTS Significantly greater numbers and longer lengths of peripheral bronchi were segmented in the U-HRCT mode than in the conventional HRCT mode (P < 0.001, for fifth- to eighth-generation bronchi). For example, the mean numbers and total lengths of the sixth-generation bronchi were 81 and 1048 mm in the U-HRCT mode and 59 and 538 mm in the conventional HRCT mode. CONCLUSIONS The U-HRCT mode greatly improves automatic airway segmentation for the more peripheral bronchi, compared with the conventional HRCT mode. This advantage can be applied to routine clinical care, such as virtual bronchoscopy and automatic lung segmentation.

Abstract
Patellofemoral instability is a motion related disease, featured as the patella dislocating from the trochlear groove. Four dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) enables full assessment of the patellofemoral movement. Nevertheless, the quantitative measurements of patellofemoral instability are still under research and currently of limited practical use. The aim of this study is to develop a robust and semi-automatic workflow to quantitatively describe the patellofemoral movement in a patient group of eight suffering from patellofemoral instability. The initial results show agreement with manual observations of the tibial tubercle - trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance in routine practice, and the possibility to evaluate both TT-TG distance and patellar centre - trochlear groove (PC-TG) distance dynamically during active flexion-extension-flexion movement of the knee.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare rotational laxity in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstructed knees retrospectively with and without concomitant anterolateral capsule (ALC) injury confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to ACL reconstruction. METHODS Sixty-two ACL-reconstructed knees (26 men, 36 women; median age 20 (range 13-59)) were included. Pivot-shift test was performed before ACL reconstruction and 1 year postoperatively under anesthesia with both clinical grading and quantitative measurement simultaneously. Clinical grading was determined according to the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) criteria (none, glide, clunk, or gross), and an electromagnetic measurement system was used to provide tibial acceleration as a quantitative parameter. The resence of concomitant ALC injury was confirmed retrospectively by MRI. The pivot-shift test was compared between ACL-reconstructed knees with and without ALC injury test for clinical grading and the independent t test for quantitative evaluation. RESULTS ALC injury was identified in 26 of 62 (42%) knees. Before ACL reconstruction, there was no difference in the pivot-shift test results between the ACL-deficient knees with and without ALC injury in IKDC grading (n.s.) or tibial acceleration (1.1 ± 0.7 m/s2 and 1.4 ± 1.1 m/s2, respectively, n.s.). At 1 year postoperatively, no difference was observed between groups (IKDC, p = 0.90; tibial acceleration, 0.6 ± 0.3 m/s2 and 0.8 ± 0.6 m/s2, n.s.). CONCLUSIONS Concomitant ALC injury at the time of ACL injury had no effect on the rotational laxity of the knee in the postoperative course after ACL reconstruction. Therefore, additional treatment for ALC injury may not be warranted. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug safety in children is a major concern; however, there is still a lack of methods for quantitatively measuring, let alone to improving, drug safety in children under different clinical conditions. To assess pediatric drug safety under different clinical conditions, a computational method based on Electronic Medical Record (EMR) datasets was proposed. METHODS In this study, a computational method was designed to extract the significant drug-diagnosis associations (based on a Bonferroni-adjusted hypergeometric P-value < 0.05) among drug and diagnosis co-occurrence in EMR datasets. This allows for differences between pediatric and adult drug use to be compared based on different EMR datasets. The drug-diagnosis associations were further used to generate drug clusters under specific clinical conditions using unsupervised clustering. A 5-layer quantitative pediatric drug safety level was proposed based on the drug safety statement of the pediatric labeling of each drug. Therefore, the drug safety levels under different pediatric clinical conditions were calculated. Two EMR datasets from a 1900-bed children's hospital and a 2000-bed general hospital were used to test this method. RESULTS The comparison between the children's hospital and the general hospital showed unique features of pediatric drug use and identified the drug treatment gap between children and adults. In total, 591 drugs were used in the children's hospital; 18 drug clusters that were associated with certain clinical conditions were generated based on our method; and the quantitative drug safety levels of each drug cluster (under different clinical conditions) were calculated, analyzed, and visualized. CONCLUSION With this method, quantitative drug safety levels under certain clinical conditions in pediatric patients can be evaluated and compared. If there are longitudinal data, improvements can also be measured. This method has the potential to be used in many population-level, health data-based drug safety studies.

Abstract
In this paper, 64-slice spiral computed tomography (CT) retrospective electrocardiographic (ECG) gating technology was used to perform coronary CT angiography scans. The aorta and aortic pulmonary artery diameter were measured quantitatively in healthy people and patients with hypertension and cerebrovascular disease. Corresponding aortic pulmonary artery ratios were obtained through calculation, and the changes of aortic diameter, aortic pulmonary artery ratio, and aortic diameter difference between different cardiac phases, ages, sexes, and levels of hypertension were discussed. Through research, it can be concluded that 64-row spiral CT scan combined with ECG gating technology can accurately measure the dynamic changes of the aortic diameter with the cardiac cycle. At the same time, the aortic diameter measured by multidetector CT scan combined with ECG gating technology and the phase difference between different phases can objectively reflect the degree of arterial damage in patients with hypertension; therefore, early screening of aortic diseases in patients with hypertension can be performed. Diagnosis to detect abnormalities as early as possible and start treatment as early as possible to prevent the disease from progressing and even affecting other tissues and organs can also be obtained.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to quantitatively compare the results of pivot-shift test between knees with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury with and without anterolateral capsule (ALC) injury detected on MRI. ALC injury was hypothesized to worsen rotatory knee laxity. METHODS 82 patients with unilateral ACL injury were enrolled in this study. The pivot-shift test was performed under anesthesia before ACL reconstruction. Two evaluations were conducted simultaneously: IKDC clinical grading and the quantitative evaluation using an electromagnetic measurement system that determined tibial acceleration (m/s2). Two examiners identified the ALC injury on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and stratified patients into two groups: ALC-injured (ALC+) and ALC-intact (ALC-). ALC injury was diagnosed if the signal intensity on coronal T2-weighted sequences is increased. After confirming the reliability of the MRI, the difference in the pivot-shift between two groups was assessed. RESULTS Because of the poor agreement between examiners with respect to the ALC evaluations (κ coefficient of 0.25 and 58.5% concordance), the result from each examiner was analyzed separately. Examiner 1 found ALC injury in 42/82 knees (51%). The two groups had similar clinical grading (glide/clunk/gross: ALC+ group 21/18/3cases vs. ALC- group 21/16/3cases) (n.s.). Tibial acceleration during pivot-shift was also similar in the ALC+ (1.4 ± 1.2 m/s2) and ALC- (1.7 ± 1.3 m/s2) groups (n.s.). Examiner 2 found ALC injury in 28/82 knees (34%). Differences in clinical grading were not observed (glide/clunk/gross: ALC+ group 16/9/3 vs. ALC- group 26/25/3) (n.s.). However, the tibial acceleration in the ALC+ group (1.2 ± 0.8 m/s2) was significantly lower than that in the ALC- group (1.7 ± 1.3 m/s2, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Concomitant ALC injury in knees with ACL injury was not consistently detected on MRI and did not affect rotatory knee laxity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Case-control study, level III.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to measure the volume of the endolymphatic space (ELS) and to investigate prognosis in patients with acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL). METHODS A total of 61 ALHL patients participated; 47 were definite while 14 were probable ALHL cases. The definite ALHL patients were classified into three groups: A, "Cure"; B, "No cure"; and C, "Recurrence." Also, nine patients for whom diagnosis changed from ALHL to cochlear Meniere's disease (cMD) without vertigo (ALHL-cMD group). Images of the inner ear fluid space, positive perilymph, and positive endolymph were acquired using a 3T magnetic resonance scanner. Three-dimensional (3D) images were semi-automatically reconstructed using anatomical and tissue information to fuse the 3D images of the inner ear fluid space with the 3D ELS images. RESULTS Patients in the no cure group showed a significantly higher ELS/total fluid space (TFS) volume ratio in the affected cochlear region than the patients of the other groups. Additionally, the affected vestibular ELS/TFS volume ratio in the cure group was significantly lower than that in the recurrence group. There were significantly higher cochlear and vestibular ELS/TFS ratios in ALHL-cMD patients than in control subjects. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that the cochlear ELS/TFS volume ratio should be considered when investigating the extent of recovery, while the extended ELS in the vestibule should be considered when investigating cases of recurrence. Thus, our study suggests that the severe extended ELS appeared likely to change to cMD and that the prognostic determination of ALHL is possible.

Abstract
PURPOSE Concomitant meniscus injuries in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) have been suggested to exacerbate rotational laxity. However, the effect is supposed to be so small, if any, that some quantitative pivot-shift measurement is needed. The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the effect of meniscus tear on rotational laxity in ACL-deficient knees by an quantitative measurement. It was hypothesized that a concomitant meniscus tear, especially a lateral one, would induce greater pivot shift. METHODS Fifty-seven unilateral ACL-injured patients (26 men and 31 women, mean age: 24 ± 10 years) were included. The pivot-shift test was performed prior to ACL reconstruction, while a quantitative evaluation using an electromagnetic system to determine tibial acceleration and a clinical grading according to the IKDC were performed. Meniscus injuries were diagnosed arthroscopically, and concomitant meniscus tear was confirmed in 32 knees. RESULTS The clinical grade was not different between the ACL-injured knees of patients with and without meniscus tear (n.s.). Tibial acceleration did not show a statistical significant difference (meniscus-injured knees: 1.6 ± 1.1 m/s2 versus meniscus-intact knees: 1.2 ± 0.7 m/s2, n.s.). However, the subgroup analysis demonstrated that there was increased tibial acceleration in ACL-deficient knees with lateral meniscus tear (2.1 ± 1.1 m/s2, n = 13) compared with meniscus-intact knees (p < 0.05), whereas rotational laxity did not increase in the medial meniscus-injured and bilateral-injured knees (1.2 ± 0.9 m/s2, n = 12, n.s. and 1.4 ± 1.1 m/s2, n = 7, n.s., respectively). CONCLUSION A concomitant meniscus tear, especially a lateral meniscus tear, has a significant impact on rotational laxity in ACL-injured knees. When a large pivot shift is observed in the ACL-injured knee, a concomitant meniscus tear should be suspected and an aggressive treatment would be considered. Meniscus injuries should be inspected carefully when substantial pivot shift is encountered in ACL-injured knees. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Diagnostic study, Level III.

Abstract
Many chemotaxis assays allow for the assessment of bacterial chemotaxis by determining the number of cells migrating toward a chemoattractant or away from a chemorepellent. Some of these assays use a capillary filled with a chemoeffector/agarose mixture to allow cells to accumulate at the mouth of the capillary. Subsequently, assumptions about the relative strengths of chemotaxis strength are based on visual comparisons. Here, we describe a modification of this assay that uses a hydrogel matrix to enable quantitative time-course measurements by analyzing image pixel intensities. This approach allows a high-throughput method when coupled with the aid of a motorized microscope stage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether different quantitative measurements of increased signal intensity (ISI) on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging are useful for predicting surgical outcome in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 108 patients with ISI who underwent surgery for CSM. Clinical outcome was evaluated via the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score and the recovery rate. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the JOA recovery rate: good (≥50%) and fair (<50%). The quantitative measurements of ISI included the maximum vertical length and the signal change ratio (SCR). C2-C7 sagittal alignment, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis, C2-C7 range of motion, maximum spinal cord compression, and maximum canal compromise also were assessed. RESULTS There were no significant differences in cervical sagittal alignment parameters between the groups. Multivariate analysis showed that a longer duration of symptoms, a lower preoperative JOA score, a longer preoperative ISI length, and a greater preoperative SCR were negatively associated with clinical outcomes. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the best cutoff values of ISI length and SCR as negative predictors of surgical outcome were 15.50 mm and 1.56, respectively, and the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of preoperative ISI length, SCR that discriminate recovery rate of JOA score (≥50%, <50%) were 0.8507, 0.8422, respectively, and was 0.8903 for a combination of the 2. CONCLUSIONS Duration of symptoms, preoperative JOA score, preoperative ISI length, and SCR can reflect surgical outcome in patients with CSM; however, cervical sagittal alignment may not affect surgical outcome. Combining ISI length and SCR to depict ISI on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is optimal and accurate. Patients with ISI length >15.50 mm and SCR >1.56 have fair surgical recovery.

Abstract
We describe hardware, pulse sequences, and algorithms for nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy of medicines and dietary supplements. Medicine and food safety is a pressing problem that has drawn more and more attention. NQR is an ideal technique for authenticating these substances because it is a non-invasive method for chemical identification. We have recently developed a broadband NQR front-end that can excite and detect 14N NQR signals over a wide frequency range; its operating frequency can be rapidly set by software, while sensitivity is comparable to conventional narrowband front-ends over the entire range. This front-end improves the accuracy of authentication by enabling multiple-frequency experiments. We have also developed calibration and signal processing techniques to convert measured NQR signal amplitudes into nuclear spin densities, thus enabling its use as a quantitative technique. Experimental results from several samples are used to illustrate the proposed methods.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantitatively measure the morphology parameters of the right auricle with 256-slice multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) in healthy people. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of 200 patients who had undergone coronary MDCTA with negative findings was performed. The raw imaging data were reconstructed and the right auricular volume, right atrial volume, right auricle height, base long and short axes, base perimeter and area, normal angle, and distance were quantitatively measured. RESULTS Men had significantly (P < 0.05) greater values than women in the right auricular volume (13.3 ± 4.0 vs. 11.7 ± 3.7 mL) and height (33.0 ± 5.0 vs. 30.5 ± 5.2 mm), the base long axis (34.4 ± 4.1 vs. 33.2 ± 3.9 mm), area (787.6 ± 177.6 vs. 771.0 ± 143.2 mm2) and perimeter (119.2 ± 17.5 vs. 115.0 ± 13.0), and the normal distance (22.4 ± 6.6 vs. 20.2 ± 6.7 mm). The normal 95 % reference range for the right auricular parameters was put forward. The right auricular parameters had a good correlation with the right atrium volume, aortic diameter, the body weight, height, and body surface area but a bad correlation with the vertebral body height. Significantly (P < 0.05) greater values were found in the normal angle and distance in subjects below than over 40 years of age. No other significant (P > 0.05) difference existed in the other right auricular parameters. CONCLUSION Quantitative measurements of the right auricle can help us get a good understanding of the right auricular morphology and its relationship with surrounding structures and are helpful for cardiac interventions of electrophysiology and radiofrequency ablation.

Abstract
With the vigorous development of new nanodevices and nanomaterials, improvements in the quantitation and resolution of the measurement of nanoscale energy transport/conversion phenomena have become increasingly important. Although several new advanced methods for scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) have been developed to meet these needs, such methods require a drastic enhancement of SThM probe performance. In this study, by taking advantage of the characteristics of micromechanical structures where their mechanical stability is maintained even when the film that composes the structures becomes extremely thin, we develop a new design of SThM probe whose tip is made of ultra-thin SiO2 film (~100nm), fabricate the SThM probes, and demonstrate experimentally that the tip radius, thermal time constant, and thermal sensitivity of the probe are all improved. We expect the development of new high-performance SThM probes, along with the advanced measurement methods, to allow the measurement of temperature and thermal properties with higher spatial resolution and quantitative accuracy, ultimately making essential contributions to diverse areas of science and engineering related to the nanoscale energy transport/conversion phenomena.

Abstract
CONCLUSION This study described the lateralities of axial length of inner ear (ALIE), of the volume of inner ear (VIE) and age-related differences of the volume of inner ear components in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Age-related differences were found in ALIE and the positive correlation in ALIE and the volume of the cochlea (VC) of the affected ear in patients with Meniere's disease (MD). OBJECTIVE To identify side or sex-related differences in the ALIE, the length of the spiral canal of cochlea (LSCC), and the volume of components of the inner ear in MD and CRS. METHODS Thirty-two with unilateral MD and 14 with CRS were included. Images were acquired with a 3.0-tesla unit using SPACE sequences. The ALIE was measured and the VIE, VC, the volume of the vestibule (VV), and of the semi-circular canals (VSC) were also measured. RESULTS In CRS, ALIE of the right ear in males was significantly longer than in females. Patients younger than 60 years old with CRS had a significantly larger VIE, VC, and VSC than older than 60. In MD, the ALIE in older than 60 was longer than below 60.

Abstract
Methods exist to evaluate the cerebral blood flow (CBF) at both the macroscopic and microscopic spatial scales. These methods provide complementary information for understanding the mechanism in maintaining an adequate blood supply in response to neural demand. The macroscopic CBF assesses perfusion flow, which is usually measured using radioactive tracers, such as diffusible, nondiffusible, or microsphere. Each of them determines CBF based on indicator dilution principle or particle fraction principle under the assumption that CBF is steady state during the measurement. Macroscopic CBF therefore represents averaged CBF over a certain space and time domains. On the other hand, the microscopic CBF assesses bulk flow, usually measures using real-time microscopy. The method assesses hemodynamics of microvessels, ie, vascular dimensions and flow velocities of fluorescently labeled or nonlabeled RBC and plasma markers. The microscopic CBF continuously fluctuates in time and space. Smoothing out this heterogeneity may lead to underestimation in the macroscopic CBF. To link the two measurements, it is needed to introduce a common parameter which is measurable for the both methods, such as mean transit time. Additionally, applying the defined physiological and/or pharmacological perturbation may provide a good exercise to determine how the specific perturbations interfere the quantitative relationships between the macroscopic and microscopic CBF. Finally, bridging these two-scale methods potentially gives a further indication how the absolute CBF is regulated with respect to a specific type of the cerebrovascular tones or capillary flow velocities in the brain.

Abstract
Background Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric disease to cause motor disability. Two common symptoms in CP are spasticity and contracture. If this occurred in the ankle plantar flexors of children with CP, it will impair their gait and active daily living profoundly. Most children with CP receive botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection to reduce muscle tone, but a knowledge gap exists in the understanding of changes of neural and non-neural components of spasticity after injection. The purpose of this study was to determine if our device for quantitative modified Tardieu approach (QMTA) is a valid method to assess spasticity of calf muscles after botulinum toxin injection. Methods In this study, we intended to develop a device for quantitative measurement of spasticity in calf muscles based on the modified Tardieu scale (MTS) and techniques of biomedical engineering. Our QMTA measures the angular displacement and resistance of stretched joint with a device that is light, portable and can be operated similar to conventional approaches for MTS. The static (R2), dynamic (R1) and R2-R1 angles derived from the reactive signals collected by the miniature sensors are used to represent the non-neural and neural components of stretched spastic muscles. Four children with CP were recruited to assess the change in spasticity in their gastrocnemius muscles before and 4 weeks after BoNT-A injection. Results A simulated ankle model validated the performance of our device in measuring joint displacement and estimating the angle of catch. Data from our participants with CP showed that R2 and R2-R1 improved significantly after BoNT-A administration. It indicates both neural and non-neural components of the spastic gastrocnemius muscles improved at four weeks after BoNT-A injection in children with CP. Conclusion Our device for QMTA can objectively measure the changes in spasticity of the gastrocnemius muscle in children with cerebral palsy after BoNT-A injection.

Abstract
Ultrasound molecular imaging has demonstrated efficacy in pre-clinical studies for cancer and cardiovascular inflammation. However, these techniques often require lengthy protocols because of waiting periods or additional control microbubble injections. Moreover, they are not capable of quantifying molecular marker concentration in human tissue environments that exhibit variable attenuation and propagation path lengths. Our group recently investigated a modulated acoustic radiation force-based imaging sequence, which was found to detect targeted adhesion independent of control measurements. In the present study, this sequence was tested against various experimental parameters to determine its feasibility for quantitative measurements of molecular marker concentration. Results indicated that measurements obtained from the sequence (residual-to-saturation ratio, Rresid) were independent of acoustic pressure and attenuation (p > 0.13, n = 10) when acoustic pressures were sufficiently low. The Rresid parameter exhibited a linear relationship with measured molecular marker concentration (R(2) > 0.94). Consequently, feasibility was illustrated in vitro, for quantification of molecular marker concentration in large vessels using a modulated acoustic radiation force-based sequence. Moreover, these measurements were independent of absolute acoustic reflection amplitude and used short imaging protocols (3 min) without control measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors sought to clarify the variation in the condylar anterior functional surface (AFS) of patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders using quantitative measurements by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS MR images of 68 joints (2 males, 32 females) were used. The subjects were classified into three groups: with/without defects of cortical bone groups and a combination group without defects. The AFS was measured as the length between the protrusive point and the apex of the condyle on MRI (4-mm-thick slices), and the quad value of the length was defined as the area on the slice. The summed quad values of all slices were used as the AFS area. Differences in the areas among the three groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS The non-defect group had significantly larger AFS areas than the defect group. CONCLUSIONS Quantitative measurement on MR images clarified the changes in the condylar sagittal appearance.

Abstract
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by autoantigen against the nicotine acetylcholine receptor at the neuromuscular junction. With modern treatment facilities, the treatment effect and outcome for MG has been greatly improved with MG and non-MG patients enjoying the same life expectancy. Many classifications of disease distribution and severity have been set up and tested all over the world, mainly in the western world. However, the absolute and relative scoring system for evaluating the severity and treatment effect of MG in China where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years has not been introduced worldwide. The TCM has achieved a great success in the treatment of MG in the country with a huge population. This article serves to introduce this scoring system to the world.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT The high-intensity zone (HIZ) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been studied for more than 20 years, but its diagnostic value in low back pain (LBP) is limited by the high incidence in asymptomatic subjects. Little effort has been made to improve the objective assessment of HIZ. PURPOSE To develop quantitative measurements for HIZ and estimate intra- and interobserver reliability and to clarify different signal intensity of HIZ in patients with or without LBP. STUDY DESIGN A measurement reliability and prospective comparative study. PATIENT SAMPLE A consecutive series of patients with LBP between June 2010 and May 2011 (group A) and a successive series of asymptomatic controls during the same period (group B). OUTCOME MEASURES Incidence of HIZ; quantitative measures, including area of disc, area and signal intensity of HIZ, and magnetic resonance imaging index; and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for intra- and interobserver reliability. METHODS On the basis of HIZ criteria, a series of quantitative dimension and signal intensity measures was developed for assessing HIZ. Two experienced spine surgeons traced the region of interest twice within 4 weeks for assessment of the intra- and interobserver reliability. The quantitative variables were compared between groups A and B. RESULTS There were 72 patients with LBP and 79 asymptomatic controls enrolling in this study. The prevalence of HIZ in group A and group B was 45.8% and 20.2%, respectively. The intraobserver agreement was excellent for the quantitative measures (ICC=0.838-0.977) as well as interobserver reliability (ICC=0.809-0.935). The mean signal of HIZ in group A was significantly brighter than in group B (57.55±14.04% vs. 45.61±7.22%, p=.000). There was no statistical difference of area of disc and HIZ between the two groups. The magnetic resonance imaging index was found to be higher in group A when compared with group B (3.94±1.71 vs. 3.06±1.50), but with a p value of .050. CONCLUSIONS A series of quantitative measurements for HIZ was established and demonstrated excellent intra- and interobserver reliability. The signal intensity of HIZ was different in patients with or without LBP, and significant brighter signal was observed in symptomatic subjects.

Abstract
A variety of antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are found in the serum of patients with autoimmune diseases. The detection of abnormal ANA titers is a critical criterion for diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other connective tissue diseases. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIF) on HEp-2 cells is the gold standard method to determine the presence of ANA and therefore provides information about the localization of autoantigens that are useful for diagnosis. However, its utility was limited in prognosing and monitoring of disease activity due to the lack of standardization in performing the technique, subjectivity in interpreting the results and the fact that it is only semi-quantitative. On the other hand, ELISA for the detection of ANA can quantitate ANA but could not provide further information about the localization of the autoantigens. It would be ideal to integrate both of the quantitative and qualitative methods. To address this issue, this study was conducted to quantitatively detect ANAs by using IIF imaging analysis system. Serum samples from patients with ANA positive (including speckled, homogeneous, nuclear mixture and cytoplasmic mixture patterns) and negative were detected for ANA titers by the classical IIF and analyzed by an image system, the image of each sample was acquired by the digital imaging system and the green fluorescence intensity was quantified by the Image-Pro plus software. A good correlation was found in between two methods and the correlation coefficients (R(2)) of various ANA patterns were 0.942 (speckled), 0.942 (homogeneous), 0.923 (nuclear mixture) and 0.760 (cytoplasmic mixture), respectively. The fluorescence density was linearly correlated with the log of ANA titers in various ANA patterns (R(2)>0.95). Moreover, the novel ANA quantitation method showed good reproducibility (F=0.091, p>0.05) with mean±SD and CV% of positive, and negative quality controls were equal to 126.4±9.6 and 7.6%, 10.4±1.25 and 12.0%, respectively. In conclusion, our novel ANA quantitation method can provide both of the fluorescence density, which could precisely reflect the fluctuate of ANAs level in patient's serum and the useful information about the localization of the autoantigens for clinician in diagnosing and monitoring diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Traditional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) provides detailed spatial resolution in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. However, the available temporal information is often underutilized. The purpose of this study is to use deformable image registration with DSA to quantify the hemodynamic improvement of intracranial vessels after carotid stenting. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen patients with carotid stenosis (greater than 70% degree by NASCET criteria) were treated using percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stents. Carotid angiograms of the anterior-posterior and lateral views were acquired before and after the treatment. The arterial and venous phases of each single acquisition were classified according to the first arrival time of contrast in the distal middle cerebral artery and the superior sagittal sinus, respectively. The optical flow method was subsequently applied to determine the blood flow velocity in intracranial vessels. Blood flow velocity comparisons were performed to determine the therapeutic effects of blood flow restoration. RESULTS The pixel-by-pixel blood flow velocity was estimated using the optical flow method. A color scale was used in the visualization and estimation of the blood flow velocity in the vascular bed. The improvements of blood flow velocity in both the arterial and the venous phases were significant (p<0.05). The changes with contrast agent motion were more easily observed in the arterial phase compared with the venous phases. CONCLUSION Quantitative digital subtraction angiography provides reliable blood flow velocity measurements, which facilitates pretherapeutic evaluation and a reliable follow-up analysis method for the evaluation of occlusive vascular disorder treatment in the head and neck regions.
