Degradation of acetaminophen in photo-enzyme coupling system with natural organic matters from different sources

Acetaminophen (AAP) is one of the most commonly prescribed over-the-counter drugs with wide distribution in surface water, which has attracted great attention around the world. Photodegradation and enzymatic transformation are important processes for the removal of AAP in water. The influence of natural organic matter (NOM) from different sources on the transformation of AAP by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in sunlit water was systematically studied. NOM can effectively promote the combined degradation rate of AAP in photo-enzyme coupling system (PECS), and the promotion extents of different NOMs were dependent on their aromaticity and average molecular weights. NOM with low aromaticity and low average molecular weight is more effective. In order to disclose the underlying effects of NOM clearly, the reaction mechanism was clarified through the determination of the photodegradation constant and enzymatic reaction constant. The effect of NOM structure on the photo-enzymatic transformation of AAP was quantified, which showed significant positive correlation with the SUVA₂₅₄ and E₂/E₃ of NOM. Further investigation revealed that the amount of H₂O₂ generated by NOM from different sources was also closely related to SUVA₂₅₄ and E₂/E₃ of NOM. The findings will facilitate understanding the environmental fate of AAP and other pharmaceutical products in natural water.

Removal of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in water by two-stage biofiltration treatment

The removal of precursors of 36 disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in effluents from flocculation/sedimentation process was evaluated across a pilot-scale two-stage biofiltration process, i.e., a sand/anthracite (SA) biofilter (empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 7.5 min) coupled with a biologically-active granular activated carbon (GAC) contactor (EBCT of 15 min). The biofiltration process exhibited a good capacity for removal of the total DBP formation potential (DBPFP) (by 25.90 ± 2.63%), and GAC contactors contributed most to the DBPFP removal (accounting for 60.63 ± 16.64% of the total removal). The removal percentage of DBPFPs of different structure types was in the following order: halonitroalkanes (58.50%) > haloaldehydes (33.62%) > haloacetic acids (HAAs, 28.13%) > haloalkanes (20.46%) > haloketones (13.46%) > nitrosamines (10.23%) > halonitriles (-8.82%) > haloalkenes (-9.84%). The precursors of bromo-DBPs (containing only bromine atoms) and maximal halogenated DBPs (containing 3 & 4 halo atoms) were removed largely compared to other DBPs. Among the total DBPFP, trihalomethanes (THMs), HAAs, and chloral hydrate were the dominant DBPs, and they accounted for >92% of the total targeted DBPs by weight. Pearson correlation analysis (CA) and principal components analysis (PCA) indicated a significant association among these dominant DBPs. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA₂₅₄) could serve as a good surrogate parameter for DBPFP. Pre-chlorination upstream of the biofilters may not greatly impact the overall removal of DBPFP by SA/GAC biofiltration. In addition, results showed that SA/GAC biofiltration was a useful procedure to remove the inorganic DBP chlorite.

Formation and speciation of nine haloacetamides, an emerging class of nitrogenous DBPs, during chlorination or chloramination

Haloacetamides (HAcAms) are an emerging class of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) of health concern. However, there are very limited data on the formation and speciation of the nine bromine- and chlorine-containing haloacetamides (HAcAm9). In the study, their formation and speciation during chlor(am)ination were investigated for a group of waters with a range of specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA₂₅₄), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and bromide levels. The waters that were the least impacted by anthropogenic pollution had the lowest DON levels, the highest ratios of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to DON, and exhibited the least HAcAm9 formation. DON/DOC may act as an indicator of HAcAm yields during chlorination. HAcAm9 exhibited more formation during chloramination in the low-SUVA waters with no bromide, relative to high-SUVA waters with bromide. The selected waters all formed primarily dihalogenated (di-) HAcAms, followed by trihalogenated (tri-) species and, to a much lesser extent, monohalogenated (mono-) HAcAms. Di-HAcAm formation had similar trends as that of HAcAm9; whereas chloramination formed more mono- and less tri-HAcAms than chlorination. Bromine utilization factors and bromine incorporation factor increased with decreasing and increasing bromide during either chlorination or chloramination, and bromine was easier to incorporate into tri-HAcAms during chloramination than chlorination.
