Soil nitrogen availability drives the response of soil microbial biomass to warming

Although soil microbial biomass responses to experimental warming have been extensively studied, the mechanisms through which elevated temperatures influence soil microbial biomass remain unclear. In this study, we performed a global meta-analysis to quantify the global pattern of soil microbial biomass in response to warming. Our findings suggest that global warming effect is not apparent when all the data are pooled together, while warming does increase microbial biomass under specific conditions (Δ°C ≥ 2 °C). This constructive influence is particularly accentuated under certain circumstances, including high precipitation levels (>800 mm), short treatment durations (<1 year), and within agricultural ecosystems. More importantly, our findings suggest that the impact of global warming on soil microbial biomass is largely mediated by changes in soil nitrogen availability. These findings underscore the pivotal role of nitrogen availability in modulating the response of soil microbial biomass to warming, while also emphasizing the intricate influence between multiple factors such as temperature, duration, and precipitation in shaping the patterns of warming effects.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal respiration makes a large contribution to soil respiration in a subtropical forest under various N input rates

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread in subtropical forests and play a crucial role in belowground carbon (C) dynamics. Nitrogen (N) deposition or fertilization may affect AMF and thus the flux of plant-derived C back to the atmosphere via AMF hyphae. However, the contribution of AMF hyphal respiration to soil respiration and the response AMF hyphal respiration to increased soil N availability remain unknown. We studied the effect of N fertilization (0, 50, 100 and 200 kg N ha^-1 yr^-1) on AMF hyphal respiration, root respiration and heterotrophic (microbial) respiration in a subtropical Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) plantation. We found that short-term N addition did not affect root, AMF hyphal and soil microbial respiration, because soil N availability and extraradical hyphae were not affected by N addition. The AMF hyphal respiration contributed 12 % of total soil respiration and 25 % of the autotrophic respiration. Root, AMF hyphal and soil microbial respiration were positively correlated with soil moisture content but not with soil temperature. Our results indicate that AMF hyphal respiration is a large source of soil respiration, and should be considered in partitioning soil respiration into different components in future studies to better understand the response of soil respiration to N addition.

Plant nitrogen-use strategies and their responses to the urban elevation of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in southwestern China

The elevation of nitrogen (N) deposition by urbanization profoundly impacts the structure and function of surrounding forest ecosystems. Plants are major biomass sinks of external N inputs into forests. Yet, the N-use strategies of forest plants in many areas remain unconstrained in city areas, so their responses and adapting mechanisms to the elevated N deposition are open questions. Here we investigated concentrations and N isotope (δ¹⁵N) of total N (TN) and nitrate (NO₃^-) in leaves and roots of four plant species in subtropical shrubberies and pine forests under N deposition levels of 13 kg-N ha^-1 yr^-1 and 29 kg-N ha^-1 yr^-1 at the Guiyang area of southwestern China, respectively. The δ¹⁵N differences between plant NO₃^- and soil NO₃^- revealed a meager NO₃^- reduction in leaves but a preferentially high NO₃^- reduction in roots. δ¹⁵N mass-balance analyses between plant TN and soil dissolved N suggested that soil NO₃^- contributed more than reduced N, and dissolved organic N contributed comparably with ammonium to plant TN, and the study plants preferred NO₃^- over reduced N. The elevation of N deposition induced root but not leaf NO₃^- reduction and enhanced the contribution of soil NO₃^- to plant TN, but plant NO₃^- preference decreased due to much higher magnitudes of soil NO₃^- enrichment than plant NO₃^- utilization. We conclude that plants in subtropical forests of southwestern China preferred NO₃^- over reduced N, and NO₃^- was reduced more in roots than in leaves, anthropogenic N pollution enhanced soil NO₃^- enrichment and plant NO₃^- utilization but reduced plant NO₃^- preference.

A synthesis of ecosystem management strategies for forests in the face of chronic nitrogen deposition

Total nitrogen (N) deposition has declined in many parts of the U.S. and Europe since the 1990s. Even so, it appears that decreased N deposition alone may be insufficient to induce recovery from the impacts of decades of elevated deposition, suggesting that management interventions may be necessary to promote recovery. Here we review the effectiveness of four remediation approaches (prescribed burning, thinning, liming, carbon addition) on three indicators of recovery from N deposition (decreased soil N availability, increased soil alkalinity, increased plant diversity), focusing on literature from the U.S. We reviewed papers indexed in the Web of Science since 1996 using specific key words, extracted data on the responses to treatment along with ancillary data, and conducted a meta-analysis using a three-level variance model structure. We found 69 publications (and 2158 responses) that focused on one of these remediation treatments in the context of N deposition, but only 29 publications (and 408 responses) reported results appropriate for our meta-analysis. We found that carbon addition was the only treatment that decreased N availability (effect size: -1.80 to -1.84 across metrics), while liming, thinning, and prescribed burning all tended to increase N availability (effect sizes: +0.4 to +1.2). Only liming had a significant positive effect on soil alkalinity (+10.5%-82.2% across metrics). Only prescribed burning and thinning affected plant diversity, but with opposing and often statistically marginal effects across metrics (i.e., increased richness, decreased Shannon or Simpson diversity). Thus, it appears that no single treatment is effective in promoting recovery from N deposition, and combinations of treatments should be explored. These conclusions are based on the limited published data available, underscoring the need for more studies in forested areas and more consistent reporting suitable for meta-analyses across studies.
