A robust broadband fat-suppressing phaser T2 -preparation module for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging at 3T

PURPOSE

Designing a new T₂ -preparation (T₂ -Prep) module to simultaneously provide robust fat suppression and efficient T₂ preparation without requiring an additional fat-suppression module for T₂ -weighted imaging at 3T.

METHODS

The tip-down radiofrequency (RF) pulse of an adiabatic T₂ -Prep module was replaced by a custom-designed RF-excitation pulse that induces a phase difference between water and fat, resulting in a simultaneous T₂ preparation of water signals and the suppression of fat signals at the end of the module (a phaser adiabatic T₂ -Prep). Numerical simulations and in vitro and in vivo electrocardiogram (ECG)-triggered navigator-gated acquisitions of the human heart were performed. Blood, myocardium, and fat signal-to-noise ratios and right coronary artery vessel sharpness were compared against previously published adiabatic T₂ -Prep approaches.

RESULTS

Numerical simulations predicted an increased fat-suppression bandwidth and decreased sensitivity to transmit magnetic field inhomogeneities using the proposed approach while preserving the water T₂ -Prep capabilities. This was confirmed by the tissue signals acquired in the phantom and the in vivo images, which show similar blood and myocardium signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio, and significantly reduced fat signal-to-noise ratio compared with the other methods. As a result, the right coronary artery conspicuity was significantly increased.

CONCLUSION

A novel fat-suppressing T₂ -Prep method was developed and implemented that showed robust fat suppression and increased vessel sharpness compared with conventional techniques while preserving its T₂ -Prep capabilities.

Combined T2 -preparation and multidimensional outer volume suppression for coronary artery imaging with 3D cones trajectories

PURPOSE

To develop a modular magnetization preparation sequence for combined T2 -preparation and multidimensional outer volume suppression (OVS) for coronary artery imaging.

METHODS

A combined T2 -prepared 1D OVS sequence with fat saturation was defined to contain a 90°-60 180°60 composite nonselective tip-down pulse, two 180°Y hard pulses for refocusing, and a -90° spectral-spatial sinc tip-up pulse. For 2D OVS, 2 modules were concatenated, selective in X and then Y. Bloch simulations predicted robustness of the sequence to B0 and B1 inhomogeneities. The proposed sequence was compared with a T2 -prepared 2D OVS sequence proposed by Luo et al, which uses a spatially selective 2D spiral tip-up. The 2 sequences were compared in phantom studies and in vivo coronary artery imaging studies with a 3D cones trajectory.

RESULTS

Phantom results demonstrated superior OVS for the proposed sequence compared with the Luo sequence. In studies on 15 healthy volunteers, the proposed sequence had superior image edge profile acutance values compared with the Luo sequence for the right (P < .05) and left (P < .05) coronary arteries, suggesting superior vessel sharpness. The proposed sequence also had superior signal-to-noise ratio (P < .05) and passband-to-stopband ratio (P < .05). Reader scores and reader preference indicated superior coronary image quality of the proposed sequence for both the right (P < .05) and left (P < .05) coronary arteries.

CONCLUSION

The proposed sequence with concatenated 1D spatially selective tip-ups and integrated fat saturation has superior image quality and suppression compared with the Luo sequence with 2D spatially selective tip-up.

T2 mapping with magnetization-prepared 3D TSE based on a modified BIR-4 T2 preparation

The purpose of this work was to investigate the performance of the modified BIR-4 T₂ preparation for T₂ mapping and propose a method to remove T₂ quantification errors in the presence of large B₁ and B₀ offsets. The theoretical investigation of the magnetization evolution during the T₂ preparation in the presence of B₁ and B₀ offsets showed deviations from a mono-exponential T₂ decay (two parameter fit). A three parameter fit was used to improve T₂ accuracy. Furthermore, a two parameter fit with an additional saturation preparation scan was proposed to improve T₂ accuracy and precision. These three fitting methods were compared based on simulations, phantom measurements and an in vivo healthy volunteer study of the neck musculature using a 3D TSE readout. The results based upon the pure two parameter fit overestimated T₂ in regions with high B₀ offsets (up to 40% in phantoms). The three parameter fit T₂ values were robust to B₀ offsets but with higher standard deviation (up to 40% in simulations). The two parameter fit with the saturation preparation yielded high robustness towards B₀ offsets with a noise performance comparable to that of the two parameter fit. In the volunteer study the T₂ values obtained by the pure two parameter fit showed a dependence on the field inhomogeneities, whereas the T₂ values from the proposed fitting approach were shown to be insensitive to B₀ offsets. The proposed method enabled accurate and precise T₂ mapping in the presence of large B₁ and B₀ offsets.

Slice-selective adiabatic magnetization T2 -preparation (SAMPA) for efficient T2 -weighted imaging at ultrahigh field strengths

PURPOSE

At high field, T₂ -weighted (T₂ w) imaging is limited by transmit field inhomogeneity and increased radiofrequency power deposition. In this work, we introduce SAMPA (Slice-selective Adiabatic Magnetization T₂ PrepAration) and demonstrate its use for efficient brain T₂ w imaging at 7 Tesla (T).

METHODS

SAMPA was designed by subsampling an optimized B₁ insensitive rotation (BIR4) waveform with small tip angle linear subpulses. To perform T₂ w imaging, SAMPA was inserted before a fast gradient echo acquisition. The off-resonance behavior, B₁ robustness, and slice selectivity of the novel T₂ preparation module were analyzed using Bloch simulations. The performance of SAMPA for T₂ w imaging was demonstrated in phantom experiments as well as in the brains of healthy volunteers at 7T.

RESULTS

Based on simulations, the proposed design operates at peak B₁ of 15 μT and higher, within a 400 Hz bandwidth. T₂ values were in strong agreement with spin echo-based T₂ mapping in phantom experiments. Whole brain, interleaved multislab three-dimensional imaging could be acquired with 0.8 mm³ isotropic resolution in 5:36 min per T₂ weighting.

CONCLUSION

Compared with previous adiabatic T₂ preparation techniques, SAMPA allows for slice-selectivity, which can lead to efficient and robust acquisitions for T₂ w imaging at high field. Magn Reson Med 76:1741-1749, 2016. © 2015 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Whole-brain three-dimensional T2-weighted BOLD functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7 Tesla

PURPOSE

A new acquisition scheme for T2-weighted spin-echo BOLD fMRI is introduced.

METHODS

It uses a T2-preparation module to induce blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast, followed by a single-shot three-dimensional (3D) fast gradient-echo readout with short echo time (TE). It differs from most spin-echo BOLD sequences in that BOLD contrast is generated before the readout, which eliminates the "dead time" due to long TE required for T2 contrast, and substantially improves acquisition efficiency. This approach, termed "3D T2prep-GRE," was implemented at 7 Tesla (T) with a typical spatial (2.5 × 2.5 × 2.5 mm(3) ) and temporal (TR = 2.3 s) resolution for functional MRI (fMRI) and whole-brain coverage (55 slices), and compared with the widely used 2D spin-echo EPI sequence.

RESULTS

In fMRI experiments of simultaneous visual/motor activities, 3D T2prep-GRE showed minimal distortion and little signal dropout across the whole brain. Its lower power deposition allowed greater spatial coverage (55 versus 17 slices with identical TR, resolution and power level), temporal SNR (60% higher) and CNR (35% higher) efficiency than 2D spin-echo EPI. It also showed smaller T2* contamination.

CONCLUSION

This approach is expected to be useful for ultra-high field fMRI, especially for regions near air cavities. The concept of using T2-preparation to generate BOLD contrast can be combined with many other sequences at any field strength.
