Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review aimed to assess global variations in the eruption chronology of primary teeth in children and the role of sexes, jaws, and socio-economic status on eruption timing. DESIGN An extensive search of electronic databases, grey literature, and hand-searching was carried out until April 2023 RESULTS: A total of 42,109 children, with an age range of 0-83 months were included from 42 studies (22 in Asia, 7 in Europe, 5 in Africa, 4 in North America, 3 in Oceania and 1 in South America). The mandibular central incisor was the first tooth to erupt at 6 months in North America and 13.5 months in Asia while the mandibular second molar erupted at 20.1 months in Europe and 29 months in South America. CONCLUSIONS The age of primary teeth eruption was advanced in the European population followed by North America, Africa, Oceania, and Asia while it was delayed in the South American population. Meta-analysis showed that tooth eruption was earlier in the left quadrant than the right but the role of other factors (sexes, jaws, and socio-economic status) was insignificant. Population-specific data on primary teeth emergence may serve as a baseline for future research. In clinical practice, these population-based eruption charts can serve as a valuable asset for diagnosis and treatment planning in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental eruption is part of a set of children´s somatic growth phenomena. The worldwide accepted human dental eruption chronology is still based on a small sample of European children. However, evidence points to some population variations with the eruption at least two months later in low-income countries, and local standards may be useful. So, this study aimed to predict deciduous teeth eruption from 12 months of age in a Brazilian infant population. METHODS We developed a cross-sectional study nested in four prospective cohorts - the Brazilian Ribeirão Preto and São Luís Cohort Study (BRISA) - in a sample of 3,733 children aged 12 to 36 months old, corrected by gestational age. We made a reference curve with the number of teeth erupted by age using the Generalized Additive Models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) technique. The explanatory variable was the corrected children´s age. The dependent variable was the number of erupted teeth, by gender, evaluated according to some different outcome distributional forms. The generalized Akaike information criterion (GAIC) and the model residuals were used as the model selection criterion. RESULTS The Box-Cox Power Exponential method was the GAMLSS model with better-fit indexes. Our estimation curve was able to predict the number of erupted deciduous teeth by age, similar to the real values, in addition to describing the evolution of children's development, with comparative patterns. There was no difference in the mean number of erupted teeth between the sexes. According to the reference curve, at 12 months old, 25% of children had four erupted teeth or less, while 75% had seven or fewer and 95% had 11 or fewer. At 24 months old, 5% had less than 12, and 75% had 18 or more. At 36 months old, around 50% of the population had deciduous dentition completed (20 teeth). CONCLUSION The adjusted age was an important predictor of the number of erupted deciduous teeth. This outcome can be a variable incorporated into children's growth and development curves, such as weight and height curves for age to help dentists and physicians in the monitoring the children's health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower third molars (L3M) are the last teeth to erupt in the oral cavity. Uneruption of these teeth still raises questions about its causes, in the literature (1) genetic factors, (2) dental lamina activity and, mainly, (3) insufficient growth and development of the bone bases are included. While the lack of space theory influenced by mandibular morphology and size of L3M was argued to be the main reason for L3M impaction, there is a limitation in the literature in examining such association using more accurate tomographic analysis obtained from CBCT. This work aimed to evaluate the relationship between mandibular morphology and the eruption of L3M. METHODS In this regard, 85 Cone Beam Computed Tomographies (CBCT), with 147 L3M, were selected from the archives of the Department of Surgery, Stomatology, Pathology and Radiology, Bauru School of Dentistry, obtained using an Accuitomo® Morita device and using the Dolphin Imaging 11.9 software. L3M eruption was related to linear measurements of jaw length (Co-Gn), retromolar space dimension (D2R), mesiodistal width of the L3M crowns, mandibular first molars (L1M) and mandibular canines (LC) and the angle mandibular (Ar-Go-Me). Independent samples t-test, chi-square tests and logistic regression were performed adopting a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The average mandible length of 116.446 mm + 6.415 mm, retromolar space of 11.634 mm + 2.385 mm, mesiodistal size of the L3M of 10.054 mm + 0.941 mm, sum of the mesiodistal widths of the L1M and LC of 15.564 mm + 1.218 mm and mandibular angle of 127.23° + 6.109. There was no statistically significant association between these factors and the eruption. CONCLUSION With the results obtained in this study, we conclude that the length and angle of the mandible, teeth size and dimension of the retromolar space are not associated with the L3M eruption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of the gubernacular canal observed on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in a group of Turkish populations according to age and gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS CBCT images of 500 cases were evaluated retrospectively, and a total of 117 impacted or erupting teeth were included in the study, and the presence of gubernacular canal was recorded according to age, gender and eruption status of the tooth. SPSS program was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The mean age of 117 buried/continuing patients was 17 ± 15.32, 55 (47%) were female and were 62 (53%) male patients. Presence of gubernacular canal was observed in 91 (77.8%) cases and this duct was not detected in 26 (22.2%) cases. While 40.2% of female were found to have canals, 37.6% of male had canals. When the presence of canals was examined, the presence of canals was found to be significantly higher in the erupting teeth. A significant difference was found when analyzed according to the mean age. CONCLUSIONS CBCT is a useful method of detecting the gubernacular canal. The presence of gubernacular canal was significantly higher in erupting teeth.

Abstract
Short Root Defects defined by a reduced ratio of root to crown, may culminate in root resorption and subsequent tooth loss, in spite of the absence of apparent symptoms. Such defects present considerable impediments to orthodontic treatment and restoration. Recent identification of Fam20a, an emergent pseudokinase, has been associated with enamel development and tooth eruption, yet its definitive role in root formation and eruption remains ambiguous. In this research, we initially ascertained that the targeted knockout of Fam20a within the epithelium led to truncated tooth roots, irregular breaks in the epithelial root sheath initiation of the WNT signaling pathway, and decreased expression of the cell polarity-related transcription factor Cdc42 in murine models. This was concomitant with the participation of the associated epithelial root sheath developmental pathways BMP2, Gli1, and Nfic. Furthermore, we observed that Fam20a predominantly affects the intraosseous eruption phase of tooth emergence. During this phase, the osteoclast peak around the mandibular first molar in cKO mice is delayed, leading to a slower formation of the eruption pathway, ultimately resulting in delayed tooth eruption in mice. The findings of this study enrich the extant knowledge regarding the role of Fam20a, suggesting its potential regulatory function in tooth root development through the WNT/β-catenin/Cdc42 pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, affecting lifelong as well as children. Therefore, it is important to clarify factors related to early childhood caries (ECC) in a younger population in terms of caries prevention. However, the prevalence of ECC is low in developed countries in the twenty-first century and a large-scale survey is needed to clarify the risk factors. Furthermore, earlier tooth eruption is not taken into consideration in most studies of ECC, even though it may be a factor of ECC. The present study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of dental caries in children aged 18 months in a core city of Japan. METHODS Findings from a total of 7351 children aged 18 months were analyzed. Anthropometric measurements of height and weight, as well as an oral examination and a microbiological caries-risk test, were performed. Additionally, a structured interview sheet was provided to the parents or guardians. Findings of dental caries at 18 months of age were evaluated using a logistic regression model. RESULTS Of the enrolled children, 1.2% had experienced dental caries. Multivariable logistic regression analysis results indicated a significant association with dental caries at 18 months of age for the following factors: second child (OR = 1.78; 95% CI:1.08-2.93, P < 0.05), third and later child (OR = 2.08; 95% CI:1.12-3.89, P < 0.05), 12 or fewer erupted teeth (OR = 0.47; 95% CI:0.24-0.96, P < 0.05), 17 or more erupted teeth (OR = 4.37; 95% CI:1.63-11.7, P < 0.01), Cariostat score (+ + +) (OR = 3.99; 95% CI:1.29-12.31, P < 0.05), daily eating before bed (OR = 2.62; 95% CI: 1.55-4.45, P < 0.001), three or more snacks per day (OR = 2.03; 95% CI:1.15-3.58, P < 0.05), and breastfeeding (OR = 3.30; 95% CI:2.00-5.44, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the number of erupted teeth, as well as birth order, eating habits, and breastfeeding, are significant factors in dental caries occurrence at 18 months of age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the study was to determine the possible relationship between the eruption of primary and permanent teeth and neonatal factors in German children according to gender. METHODS A cross-sectional survey study was performed in 10 German orthodontic practices. Using a questionnaire information about gender, time of birth (week of pregnancy), birth weight (g) and height (cm), and the age of first primary and first permanent tooth eruption (months/years) of 405 children (230 girls and 175 boys) were collected. A Mann-Whitney U-test was used for group comparisons, and correlations were verified using a Pearson test. RESULTS No correlation was found between neonatal factors (time of birth, birth weight, and birth height) and primary tooth eruption for male participants. However, for females a low correlation was found between the eruption of the first primary tooth and birth weight (r = -0.18, CI: -0.30 to -0.042, p = 0.011) and birth height (r = -0.19, CI: -0.32 to -0.054, p = 0.006). No correlations between neonatal factors and the eruption of the first permanent tooth were found for either gender. A moderate correlation was found between the first primary and first permanent tooth eruption (females: r = 0.30, CI: 0.16 to 0.43, p < 0.001; males: r = 0.22, CI: 0.059 to 0.35, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS An earlier eruption of the primary teeth can be assumed with greater body weight and height at the time of birth for girls. For boys, the tendency is the opposite. However, there seems to be a catch-up growth effect due to the missing differences between both permanent tooth eruption times. Nevertheless, the first primary and the first permanent tooth eruption correlates in a German children population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Estimate the incidence of teething symptoms and investigate risk factors at three centers in different regions of Brazil. METHODS A prospective cohort study enrolled children at birth in the cities of Manaus (northern region), Porto Alegre (southern region) and Salvador (northeast region). Sociodemographic and anthropometric variables were collected at baseline and 6 months. At 12 months, data were collected on the child's health through structured interviews and dental examinations, including the primary outcome: occurrence of signs and symptoms of tooth eruption reported by parents. Statistical analysis involved Poisson regression with robust variance, with calculation of relative risks (RR). RESULTS The incidence of teething symptoms was 82.4% (238/289). The multivariate analysis revealed a higher occurrence of the outcome in the city of Salvador (RR = 1.39; 95% CI 1.23-1.58), when mother's education was more than 11 years (RR = 1.31; 95% CI 1.04-1.65), when a larger number of individuals resided in the home (RR = 1.15; 95% CI 1.02-1.29), when a smoker resided in the home (RR = 1.16; 95% CI 1.03-1.31) and when the child presented flu or cold in the first year of life (RR = 1.23; 95% CI 1.09-1.38). The most reported symptoms were fever (50.5%), irritability (42.6%), itching (40.8%) and diarrhea (35.3%). Most parents (82%) took some action to alleviate symptoms, including unprescribed systemic medication, such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrheic agents. CONCLUSION Reports of teething symptoms were associated with the city investigated, socioeconomic factors of the families and characteristics of the child's health. A high rate of administering unprescribed medication was also found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the influence of estrogen deficiency on tooth eruption rate (TER) and gene expression of estrogen receptor alpha and beta (ERα and ERβ) in the odontogenic region of teeth with continuous formation in a rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ovariectomies (OVX; n = 25) and sham surgeries (SHAM; n = 25) were performed in female Wistar rats when animals were 25 days old. The TER of the lower incisors, both in impeded (hyperfunction condition) and unimpeded (trimmed incisal edge-hypofunction condition) conditions, was evaluated using standardized digital photographs acquired every 48-72 h for 3 weeks (35th-53rd day of life), using a camera coupled to a stereomicroscope. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to evaluate the relative gene expression of ERα and ERβ in the odontogenic region. RESULTS The OVX group showed a significant reduction in TER when compared to the SHAM group, only in the impeded condition (p = 0.03). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in ERα gene expression (p = 0.33). ERβ showed a significantly higher gene expression in the OVX group (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Estrogen deficiency decreases TER in teeth under impeded condition. Estrogen deficiency also increases ERβ gene expression in the odontogenic region of teeth with continuous formation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Hormonal disturbances affecting estrogen levels can cause alterations in dental formation and teeth eruption.

Abstract
Aims and objectives To determine the differences between type 1 diabetic children and healthy children regarding oral hygiene, gingival and periodontal health, and permanent teeth eruption.Materials and methods: A case-control study was conducted on 80 children (40 type 1 diabetic children and 40 healthy children) aged 6-12-year-old. The groups were further divided into subgroups (early and late mixed dentition). All study aspects were examined clinically using the simplified oral hygiene index, Löe and Silness gingival index, clinical attachment loss (CAL), and Logan and Kronfeld stages for tooth eruption. The data were analyzed using Fisher's exact test, chi-squared test, and logistic regression models. A p-value of ≤0.05 was the threshold for statistical significance. Results No significant difference was found between diabetic and healthy children regarding oral hygiene and gingival health. Most children had poor oral hygiene (52.5% in the case group and 60% in the control group), with fair gingival health (70% in the case group and 55% in the control group). Diabetic children had significantly (p = 0.05) more periodontitis than healthy children. Teeth in the advanced stage of the eruption were significantly higher in diabetic than control subjects (p = 0.048 in stage V and p = 0.003 in stage VI). Older diabetic children in late mixed dentition exhibited accelerated eruption. Conclusion Periodontitis was significantly more common in diabetic than in healthy children. The advanced stage of the eruption was significantly higher in diabetic than in control subjects. Clinical significance Type 1 diabetic children had more periodontal disease and advanced stage of permanent teeth eruption compared to healthy children. Abstract
Dental follicles are necessary for tooth eruption, surround the enamel organ and dental papilla, and regulate both the formation and resorption of alveolar bone. Dental follicle progenitor cells (DFPCs), which are stem cells found in dental follicles, differentiate into different kinds of cells that are necessary for tooth formation and eruption. Runt‐related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) is a transcription factor that is essential for osteoblasts and osteoclasts differentiation, as well as bone remodeling. Mutation of Runx2 causing cleidocranial dysplasia negatively affects osteogenesis and the osteoclastic ability of dental follicles, resulting in tooth eruption difficulties. Among a variety of cells and molecules, Nel-like molecule type 1 (Nell-1) plays an important role in neural crest-derived tissues and is strongly expressed in dental follicles. Nell-1 was originally identified in pathologically fused and fusing sutures of patients with unilateral coronal synostosis, and it plays indispensable roles in bone remodeling, including roles in osteoblast differentiation, bone formation and regeneration, craniofacial skeleton development, and the differentiation of many kinds of stem cells. Runx2 was proven to directly target the Nell-1 gene and regulate its expression. These studies suggested that Runx2/Nell-1 axis may play an important role in the process of tooth eruption by affecting DFPCs. Studies on short and long regulatory noncoding RNAs have revealed the complexity of RNA-mediated regulation of gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. This ceRNA network participates in the regulation of Runx2 and Nell-1 gene expression in a complex way. However, non-study indicated the potential connection between Runx2 and Nell-1, and further researches are still needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to provide a comprehensive review of the current knowledge of the multiple roles of Runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2) in regulating tooth eruption, focusing on the molecular mechanisms regarding tooth eruption mediated by RUNX2. DESIGN Relevant literatures in PubMed, Medline, and Scopus database were searched, and a narrative review was performed. The multiple roles of RUNX2 in regulating tooth eruption was reviewed and discussed. RESULTS Aberrant RUNX2 expression leads to disturbed or failed tooth eruption. Tooth eruption involves both the process of bone formation and bone resorption. RUNX2 promotes osteogenesis around the radicular portion of the dental follicle that provides the biological force for tooth eruption through inducing the expression of osteogenesis-related genes in dental follicle cells/osteoblasts. On the other hand, through indirect and direct pathways, RUNX2 regulates osteoclastogenesis and the formation of the eruption pathway. CONCLUSION RUNX2 exerts a pivotal and complex influence in regulating tooth eruption. This review provides a better understanding of the function of RUNX2 in tooth eruption, which is beneficial to illuminate the precise molecular mechanism of osteogenesis and bone resorption, aiding the development of effective therapy for the failure of tooth eruption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prediction of unerupted permanent teeth is an essential part of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This prediction is done by mixed dentition space analysis based on the estimation of mesiodistal dimensions of unerupted permanent canine and premolars from already erupted permanent teeth. Permanent mandibular incisors are most commonly used for prediction. Recent literature reveals that mandibular incisors are not accurate predictors and other independent variables have been introduced to make a more accurate and precise prediction. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the literature in light of a variety of independent variables and their predictive accuracy. METHODS Electronic databases such as MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL Plus were searched to identify articles published until September 2021. RESULTS The search resulted in a total of 1098 articles, of which 24 papers met our inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Articles using permanent mandibular incisors only as a predictor were excluded during the eligibility assessment. The results show that various independent variables including mesiodistal and vestibulo-oral dimensions of permanent maxillary and mandibular incisors and molars, molar basal arch length, intermolar distance, maxillary and mandibular arch and gender have been used as predictors to more accurately determine mesiodistal width of unerupted canine and premolars in different populations. CONCLUSION Ethnic tooth size variations strongly emphasize the need to determine which independent variable gives a more accurate prediction of unerupted permanent teeth to develop a population-specific prediction model. This will play a significant role in managing space problems and developing malocclusions.

Abstract
Aim and objective To illustrate the most important general findings significant for dentists dealing with pediatric diabetic patients, as well as the effect of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on children's oral health. Background Type 1 DM is considered to be the most popular type of diabetes in children and adolescents which has a strong impact on their lifestyle. Diabetes mellitus (DM) mainly affect organs and tissues that are affluent with blood vessels including kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Adding to that oral cavity is covered with epithelial tissues that are rich with small blood vessels. Materials and methods An electronic search of English scientific papers was accomplished using PubMed, Google Scholar, and King Abdulaziz University digital library. Search terms used were children, DM, dental health, gingival health, oral hygiene, periodontal health, and teeth eruption. Review results Thirty-six articles were obtained from the electronic search and references of selected studies. In addition, other references were included from selected studies about DM and its relationship to oral health. Multiple studies confirmed that T1DM has a negative impact on oral hygiene, gingival and periodontal health, and teeth eruption. While other studies contradict these results. Conclusion There are contradictory studies regarding the effect of T1DM on oral health in children and adolescents. Well-established high-quality research with clear and concise materials and methods are required to have representative results. Clinical significance Studying the effect of T1DM on oral health in children and adolescents is indicated to set well-established guidelines to reach a high standard of care for those children. Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone grafts can provide an optimal environment for permanent tooth to erupt and enhance the stability of the alveolar maxilla. Although autologous bone is an optimal source for osteogenesis, its inevitable donor site morbidity has led to active research on bone substitutes. This study was designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of using biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP; Osteon) as a bone substitute in dogs. METHODS Bilateral third and fourth premolars of four 15-week-old mongrel dogs were used. All teeth were extracted except the third premolar of the right mandible, which was used as a control. After extraction of the premolars, each dog was administered BCP (Osteon), demineralized bone matrix (DBM; DBX), and no graft in the hollow sockets of the right fourth premolar, left fourth premolar, and left third premolar, respectively. Radiographs were taken at 2-week intervals to check for tooth eruption. After 8 weeks, each dog was sacrificed, and tooth and bone biopsies were performed to check for the presence of tooth and bone substitute particle remnants. RESULTS Four weeks after the operation, permanent tooth eruptions had started at all the extraction sites in each dog. Eight weeks after the operation, all teeth had normally erupted, and histological examination revealed BCP particles at the right fourth premolar. CONCLUSION In all four dogs, no delay in the eruption of the teeth or shape disfigurement of permanent teeth was observed on gross inspection and radiologic evaluation. On histological examination, most of the BCP and DBM were replaced by new bone. Bone substitutes can be used as graft materials in patients with alveolar clefts.

Abstract
Ankylosis of a molar during active growth leads to a significant vertical bone defect, extrusion of the opposing molar, and inclination of adjacent teeth. Treatment timing is an essential factor for the patient's quality of life. Early extraction of the ankylosed molar and protraction of the second molar is challenging because of the difficulty of tooth movement and the uncertainty of the normal eruption of the third molar. In view of the uncertainty of eruption of the mandibular third molar, it is essential to assess the potential for eruption according to the developmental stage of the third molar and to secure sufficient space for eruption. In this case report, a girl with an ankylosed right mandibular first molar and an advanced vertical bone defect was treated via early extraction of the ankylosed molar along with the intrusion of the maxillary molar and mesial root movement of the second molar before the initiation of third molar root formation. Restoration of the vertical bone defect was noted at the end of treatment. In addition, spontaneous eruption of the third molar was observed, which was in contrast to the mesioangular impaction of the contralateral third molar. This case emphasizes the importance of treatment timing to increase the chance of utilization of the third molar.

Abstract
A tenet of mammalian, including primate dental evolution, is the Inhibitory Cascade Model, where first molar (M1) size predicts in a linear cline the size and onset time of the second (M2) and third (M3) molars: a larger M1 portends a progressively smaller and later-developing M2 and M3. In contemporary modern Homo sapiens, later-developing M3s are less likely to erupt properly. The Inhibitory Cascade Model is also used to predict molar sizes of extinct taxa, including fossil Homo. The extent to which Inhibitory Cascade Model predictions hold in contemporary H. sapiens molars is unclear, including whether this tenet informs about molar initiation, development, and eruption. We tested these questions here. In our radiographic sample of 323 oral quadrants and molar rows from contemporary humans based on mesiodistal crown lengths, we observed the distribution of molar proportions with a central tendency around parity (M1 = M2 = M3) that parsed into 13 distinct molar size ratio patterns. These patterns presented at different frequencies (e.g., M1 > M2 > M3 in about one-third of cases) that reflected whether the molar row was located in the maxilla or mandible and included both linear (e.g., M1 < M2 < M3) and nonlinear molar size ratio progressions (e.g., M1 > M2 < M3). Up to four patterns were found in the same subject's mouth. Lastly, M1 size alone does not predict M3 size, developmental timing, or eruption; rather, M2 size is integral to predicting M3 size. Our study indicates that human molar size is genetically 'softwired' and sensitive to factors local to the human upper jaw vs. lower jaw. The lack of a single stereotypical molar size ratio for contemporary H. sapiens suggests that predictions of fossil H. sapiens molar sizes using the Inhibitory Cascade Model must be made with caution.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess and compare the developmental stages and angulations of third molars between the class II and class I sides in class II subdivision malocclusions. METHODS This retrospective study was performed using panoramic x‑rays of 38 individuals (mean age: 15.5 years; 24 females, 14 males) with class II subdivision malocclusions, which were further divided into type 1 and 2 subgroups according to midline deviation, and a control group of 42 individuals (mean age: 17.0 years; 30 females, 12 males) with normal occlusion. Third molars were categorized using the developmental stages defined by the Demirjian method. Angles between the third molars and horizontal reference lines and also to the second molars were measured. RESULTS No difference was found in developmental stages or angulations between the left and right third molars in the control group. In the class II subdivision malocclusion cases, no difference in third molar developmental stages was observed, but the angle between the long axes of the mandibular third and second molars was significantly greater on the class II side. In the type 2 subgroup, developmental stage of the maxillary third molar was more advanced on the class II side. In both subgroups, the angles of the maxillary third molars' long axis to the interorbital plane differed significantly between the two sides. CONCLUSION Class II subdivision malocclusion may cause differences in third molar development and angulations between the two sides. Orthodontic treatment should be planned considering the third molars in this malocclusion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility and craniofacial and dental abnormalities such as congenitally missing teeth and teeth that failed to erupt which are believed to be doubled in OI patients than normal populations and were associated with low oral health quality of life. However, the etiology of these abnormalities remains unclear. To understand the factors influencing missing and unerupted teeth, we investigated their prevalence in a cohort of OI patients as a function of the clinical phenotype (OI type), the genetic variant type, the tooth type and the onset of bisphosphonate treatment. METHOD A total of 144 OI patients were recruited from The Shriners Hospital, Montreal, Canada, between 2016 and 2017. Patients were evaluated using intraoral photographs and panoramic radiographs. Missing teeth were evaluated in all patients, and unerupted teeth were assessed only in patients ≥15 years old (n = 82). RESULTS On average, each OI patient had 2.4 missing teeth and 0.8 unerupted teeth, and the most common missing and unerupted teeth were the premolars and the upper second molars, respectively. These phenomena were more prominent in OI type III and IV than in OI type I, and were not sex or age-related. Missing teeth were significantly more common in patients with C-propeptide variants than all other variants (p-value <0.05). Unerupted teeth were significantly more common in patients with α1 and α2 glycine variants or substitutions than in those with haploinsufficiency variants. Early-onset of bisphosphonate treatment would significantly increase the risk of unerupted teeth in patients with OI types III and IV (OR = 1.68, 95% CI (1.15-1.53)). CONCLUSION The prevalence of missing and unerupted teeth at the tooth type level in OI patients varies according to the nature of the collagen variants and the OI type. These findings highlight the role of collagen in tooth development and eruption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between the management of mandibular arch perimeter during development of the dentition and its effects on second permanent molar (M2) eruption. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched without restrictions up to June 2020. Assessment was performed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool for non-randomized clinical trials (non-RCT). Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals was calculated from random-effects meta-analyses. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS Five non-RCTs, with serious to moderate risk of bias, were included. A low certainty of evidence indicated that individuals undergoing mandibular arch perimeter management by controlling the position of the first molar had a high prevalence of M2 eruption difficulties. The odds of eruption disorders was 7.5 times higher (OR: 7.57, [3.72, 15.41], P < .001) in treated individuals. Subgroup analysis revealed that appliances that increased the arch perimeter lead to a greater chance of eruption disorders compared to appliances that only maintained the perimeter. The predictive factors for the M2 eruption difficulty were its previous mesioangulation in relation to the first molar (>24°) and the treatment time (>2 years). CONCLUSIONS Mandibular arch perimeter management during development of the dentition leads to an increase in the occurrence of M2 eruption difficulties. The identification of possible risk factors as well as the choice of the appropriate appliance type and the monitoring of these individuals seems to be essential to avoid undesirable effects with this therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Rodent incisors and molars show different eruption patterns. Dental follicles and their interaction with dental epithelia play key roles in tooth eruption. However, little is known about the differences between incisor dental follicle (IF) and molar dental follicle (MF) during tooth eruption of rodents. This study aimed to investigate the differences between IF and MF during tooth eruption under induction with cervical-loop cells (CLC) and Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) cells of rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS CLC, HERS, IF, MF cells were isolated from 10 postnatal day 7 rats and identified by immunofluorescence staining. CLC or HERS cells-derived conditioned medium (CM) was obtained to induce IF and MF cells. Cell proliferation, mineralization, gene and protein expression related to tooth eruption were detected, and histological analysis was also performed. RESULTS The osteogenic differentiation and mineralization abilities of IF cells were stronger than those of MF cells. Both CLC and HERS cells-derived CM enhanced these abilities of IF cells, whereas they showed the opposite effect on MF cells. At 7, 10, and 15 d after birth, IF cells expressed more OPG and less RANKL than MF cells. CONCLUSIONS IF and MF cells present distinct characteristics in tooth eruption, CLC and HERS cells have significant inductive effects on them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess whether the order of permanent tooth eruption may be a useful indicator of motor function laterality. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in schoolchildren aged 6-8 years old evaluated in the annual school-based routine dental health examinations conducted by the staff of the primary care centre of an urban district in Barcelona, Spain. We also evaluated hand, foot, eye, and auditory lateralities using a battery of simple exercises. Bivariate and multivariate analysis of data was performed. RESULTS The study sample included 388 children, 51.3% female, with a mean age of 6.5 years. Right laterality was the predominant side in every variable under study, especially in tooth eruption (310 children; 80%), handedness (349; 89.9%), and footedness (337; 86.8%). In the bivariate analysis, we found a statistically significant association of tooth eruption laterality with handedness and footedness, and of tooth eruption laterality with ocular and auditory lateralities (p<.001). In the multivariate analysis, tooth eruption laterality and foot laterality were independent variables significantly associated with hand laterality. The diagnostic accuracy of tooth eruption laterality and foot laterality in relation to hand laterality as reference, showed a similar sensitivity and positive and negative predictive values, but the specificity of dentition laterality was higher (79% versus 66%). CONCLUSIONS Laterality in the order of dental eruption is a useful indicator of right or left motor function laterality in developing individuals that may be particularly helpful to determine the main dominance in cases of crossed laterality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several treatment options have been proposed for the treatment of eruption disturbances of permanent molars. Despite being an infrequent condition, these disturbances should be solved as they can lead to important complications and play a relevant role in completing the occlusion. FINDINGS The presented cases involved maxillary and mandibular included second molars (M2s) respectively. Both teeth erupted successfully after the application of the miniscrew-supported pole technique, and a functional occlusion was established. CONCLUSIONS This technique is a surgically assisted orthodontic procedure performed to force the eruption of impacted/retained M2s. This device uses one mesial miniscrew which allows the application of relevant force to achieve the eruption of complicated retained/impacted M2s within a short period of time.

Abstract
A previous study suggested that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling plays an important role in dentin formation during tooth development. In this study, to examine dentin formation after tooth eruption involving secondary and tertiary dentin, we analyzed the expression patterns and expressing cells of Fgfr1, -2c, and -3c in mouse maxillary first molars (M1). Since it is difficult to recover the mRNAs from mineralized tissues, we tested methods for extraction after fixation and decalcification of teeth. We successfully obtained consistent results with quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) using β-actin transcripts for validation. qPCR for Dentin sialo phosphoprotein (Dspp), Fgfr1, -2c, and -3c transcripts was performed on mice at ages of 2-20 weeks. The results showed that the highest expression levels of Dspp and Fgfr2c occurred at 2 weeks old followed by lower expression levels after 4 weeks old. However, the expression levels of Fgfr1 and Fgfr3c were constant throughout the experimental period. By in situ hybridization, Dspp, Fgfr1, and Fgfr3c transcripts were detected in odontoblasts at ages of 2 and 4 weeks. In addition, Dspp and Fgfr1 transcripts were detected in odontoblasts facing reactionary dentin at 8 weeks old. These results suggest that FGF-FGFR signaling might be involved in the regulation of odontoblasts even after tooth eruption, including secondary and tertiary dentin formation. Moreover, our modified method for extracting mRNA from mineralized tissues after fixation and decalcification successfully produced consistent results.

Abstract
The aim was to determine whether there is a difference in the periodontal aspect (gingival recession, probing pocket depth) of the palatally displaced canine (PDC) compared to the contralateral canine. Also, from a surgical perspective, sought to determine whether there is a difference (surgical duration, postoperative pain) between the surgical techniques. The word combinations were adapted for each electronic database: PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and gray literature. Studies that met the following criteria were considered eligible: (P) Patients who received orthodontic-surgical treatment for correction of PDC; (I) Performing orthodontic-surgical treatment for traction of the PDC; (C) Comparison of the tractioned canine with its contralateral or between the two techniques; (O) Gingival recession, probing pocket depth, postoperative complications and surgical duration; (S) Randomized and nonrandomized clinical studies or observational studies. The overall prevalence of gingival recession was estimated to be 10.53% [95% CI, 3.87% - 25.59%; I2 = 88%]. No statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) was found between the means of the variables gingival recession, probing pocket depth and surgical duration. The evidence suggests that traction of palatally displaced canines can be considered a reliable and acceptable procedure.

OBJECTIVE Normal tooth eruption is closely related to relevant genes and the dynamic balance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. If secretion of RANKL and OPG by osteoblasts is disordered, relevant gene deficiencies or mutations will result in serious tooth eruption disturbances, e.g., cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD). Thus, we examined changes in Runx2, RANKL, and OPG protein expression in MC3T3-E1 cells after silencing the periostin gene, thus, providing an experimental basis to study tooth eruption mechanisms. METHODS Based on previous research, cells were divided into two groups according to the virus number: the contrast group (NC group; pFU-GW-016 PSC53349-1) and the experimental group (KD group; LVpFU-GW-016PSC66473-1). Cells were infected with the lentiviral vector (multiplicity of infection = 100) and assessed by image cytometry 72 h after infection. After screening cells for the strongest gene silencing effect, Runx2, RANKL and OPG protein expression were detected by western blotting. RESULTS Based on quantitative PCR, the periostin gene silencing efficiency in the KD group was over 90% (P < 0.01). After periostin gene silencing, compared with the control group, Runx2 and RANKL expression in the KD group was reduced (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively), but OPG protein expression showed no significant change (P > 0.05). The RANKL/OPG ratios in the KD group were lower than those in the NC group after periostin gene silencing (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Silencing periostin may reduce the expression of Runx2, suggesting that there may be a synergistic relationship between periostin and Runx2 in their effects on osteoblast differentiation, while reducing RANKL expression obviously confirms that the NF-κB (nuclear factor κB) pathway plays an important role in this process and that periostin silencing changes the underlying tendency toward bone metabolism. This method could even provide an experimental basis for using exogenous periostin protein to treat some abnormal bone metabolism diseases, as it could be used as a supplement for the treatment of tooth eruption abnormalities caused by Runx2 gene deficiencies or mutations (CCD).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth impaction is a common problem in orthodontic practice and in some cases accompanied by pain and pathological changes of surrounding teeth. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying tooth impaction allows finding the most effective orthodontic treatment for patients with impacted teeth (IT). RANK (receptor activator of NF-κB) / RANKL (RANK ligand) / OPG (osteoprotegerin) signaling pathway controls bone resorption and may be involved in the regulation of tooth eruption. The study aimed to evaluate bone remodeling based on the assessment of the RANKL/RANK/OPG status in patients with IT. METHODS Bone samples from 18 patients (mean age 25.27 ± 3.34) were divided into 3 groups: 1 - bone tissue of healthy persons (control group); 2 - bone tissue, that was taken near the healthy tooth in patients with tooth impaction; 3 - bone tissue, that was collected near the IT. Levels of RANKL, RANK, OPG, osteocalcin (OC), NF-κB p65 subunit, NFATc1, and caspase-3 were determined by western blotting. The difference between groups was assessed using ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc test. P-value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS We established a 1.73-fold elevation of RANK level in the IT area vs. control, indicating the recruitment of preosteoclasts. An increase in RANKL, OPG, and OC content was demonstrated (1.46-, 1.48-, and 1.42-fold respectively), reflecting the high activity of osteoblasts near the IT. Despite the activation of the RANKL/RANK/OPG system in the impaction area, NF-κB and NFATc1 levels did not change compared vs. control, indicating a blocked/delayed process of osteoclastogenesis. We found a decrease in the content of procaspase-3 (1.28-fold), while the level of its active form p17 increased by 2.26 folds near the healthy tooth in patients with IT compared with control. In the area of IT, we observed an increase in procaspase-3 and p17 levels (1.32 and 1.78 folds). This reflects impairments of caspase-3 activation and accumulation of its inactive form in the IT area that may contribute to the tooth eruption failure. CONCLUSIONS Tooth impaction may be associated with the disturbances in the caspase-3 cascade activation and the imbalance in the RANKL/RANK/OPG system, and as a result, blocked bone resorption.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence, amount, and rate of supraeruption of the maxillary second molar according to sex, age, and history of periodontitis. Methods Data were collected retrospectively from the charts and panoramic radiographs of 65 patients who were scheduled to undergo implant placement at the site of the mandibular second molar. The amount of supraeruption of the maxillary second molar and the alveolar bone level of the neighboring teeth were measured on digital panoramic radiographs. The prevalence was evaluated in each group, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors influencing the prevalence of supraeruption. The amount and the rate of supraeruption were compared between pairs of groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. For all tests, P values <0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results Supraeruption occurred in 78% of the patients. The prevalence of supraeruption was affected by sex, age, and history of periodontitis. The mean amount of supraeruption was 0.91 mm and the mean rate of supraeruption was 0.14 mm/month. The amount and the rate of supraeruption showed no significant differences according to sex, age, or the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (P>0.05). Conclusions These results show that the amount of supraeruption on the maxillary second molar was similar to the thickness of the enamel on the occlusal surface. When a single implant is scheduled to be placed on the mandibular second molar, supraeruption of the antagonist should be considered.

Abstract
The Gubernaculum Dentis (GD) is an anatomical structure connecting the dental follicle of the permanent tooth to the overlying gingiva. It is composed of Gubernacular cord (GCo) and a surrounding bony canal called as Gubernacular canal (GC) or Gubernacular Tract (GT). GD is a physiologic structure that has claimed to play some role in the eruption of teeth. GCo is a histologic structure, however, the surrounding GT can be identified radiographically. But due to its infinitesimal appearance, its differentiation with normal bone marrow spaces on conventional radiographs is extremely difficult and is the reason for its sporadic reference in the oral radiology literature. The advent of advanced imaging modalities such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has led to its distinct identification in the recent studies not only in the normal erupting teeth but in teeth with altered eruption pattern, impacted teeth, supernumerary teeth, odontogenic cysts and tumors as well. The identification of GT on CBCT is usually an incidental finding and because of its physiologic nature, the imaging characteristics of GT have not been studied extensively. This pictorial review aims to demonstrate the imaging characteristics of GT in diverse relations with the normal teeth, impacted teeth, supernumerary teeth, odontomas and odontogenic cysts and tumors. This will help in understanding the various presentations of GT and will serve as a teaching guide for oral and maxillofacial radiologists for their easy identification and their possible causal association with various eruptive pathologies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the mandibular posterior space in subjects with skeletal class II division 1 and division 2 malocclusions in two different age groups. METHODS Pretreatment cephalometric radiographs of 160 patients from 9 to 13 years of age (n = 80) and 15 to 18 years of age (n = 80) with class II division 1 or division 2 malocclusion were used for the study. Equal numbers of male and female patients (n = 20) were included in the two age groups in each of the malocclusion groups. Eight linear and six angular measurements were taken for mandibular posterior space evaluation. The data obtained from the study were compared using the independent t-test. RESULTS In the present study, the mandibular posterior space was greater in both malocclusion groups in subjects aged 15-18 years than in those aged 9-13 years (p < 0.05). The available posterior spaces behind the mandibular first molars were 4.4 mm and 6.3 mm in females (class II divisions 1 and 2, respectively) and 5.3 mm and 7 mm in males (class II divisions 1 and 2, respectively) in the 9‑ to 13-year-old age group. This space increased significantly by 6.9 mm (p < 0.001) and 3.2 mm (p < 0.01) in females (class II division 1 and 2, respectively) and 3.8 mm (p < 0.01) and 3 mm (p < 0.01) in males (class II division 1 and 2, respectively) in the 15- to 18-year-old age group. CONCLUSION Class II division 1 and division 2 malocclusions had similar and inadequate posterior space dimensions for the eruption of the third and an unknown portion of the second molars.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of the present study was to evaluate, for the first time, the applicability of the London Atlas method for age estimation on a sample of Brazilian population. DESIGN The study consisted of archived dental panoramic radiographs (n = 288) of individuals aged between 5 and 23 years. Radiographs were assessed using the London Atlas method to determine the developmental and eruption stages of all teeth on each sides of each jaw separately, and also to make an age estimation. RESULTS There was no significant differences between the right and left sides of the jaws (p = 0.31 for males and p = 0.65 for females). An overestimation of age occurred more likely in the female sample when compared to the male sample. Three age groups, 20.5, 18.5 and 19.5 years, presented the highest values of mean absolute difference found in the whole sample. CONCLUSION The London Atlas of age estimation performed well in general and good viability in an expert context, with most age groups showing age differences lower than two years of age, however it is necessary that it be applied with caution in certain age groups, especially when the third molar is used as a decision tooth for age estimation. Therefore, it is recommended to use more than one method for assessing the age in those age groups.

Abstract
Background Changes in eruption pattern cause malocclusion and crowding, which lead to poor oral hygiene as well as periodontal disorders. Hence, it is important for the dentist to know the exact tooth eruption sequence to educate the parents. Tooth eruption sequence we follow is based on the Western population. Aim As Indian population differs from the Western population in ethnicity, racially, and dietary habits, etc., an attempt was undertaken to compare eruption sequence of Indian children in accordance with the Western population and also to correlate whether body mass index (BMI) affects tooth eruption. Materials and methods Body mass index and eruption status of permanent mandibular central incisors and first molars were recorded among 529 schoolchildren in Chennai. Eruption status was examined with the help of mouth mirrors and illumination under natural light. The recorded data were entered into Microsoft Excel 2007 and were analyzed using Chi-square test, z test, and Spearman's correlation test. Level of significance was set as 0.05. Results Eruption values attained from our study were not consistent with the eruption values reported by Logan and Kronfeld. The present study showed that girls have early tooth eruption than boys. Our findings showed negative correlation with respect to BMI and eruption sequence of 31 (r = −0.133), 41 (r = −0.140), 36 (r = −0.08), and 46 (r = −0.076). Conclusion Eruption values reported by Logan and Kronfeld are inappropriate for Indian population. It is also found that obese children had delayed tooth eruption when compared with underweight children who had early tooth eruption. How to cite this article Anu V, Brindha JR, Carol PT, et al. Abstract
BACKGROUND Otodental syndrome is an exceptionally rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by a delayed eruption of posterior teeth, globodontia, lisping, and sensorineural hearing loss. In this case report, we reported a 3-year-old Chinese boy with the otodental syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION A 3-year-old Chinese boy was referred to our hospital with complaint of no eruption of primary canines and molars. Three years follow-up showed lately erupted bulbous primary canines with hypoplastic enamel spot, globe-shaped primary molars and sensorineural hearing loss at 4 and a half-year-old age. We diagnosed otodental syndrome in the patient's mother with hearing loss at 16-year-old age. Gene sequencing and analysis of deafness-related genes GJB2, GJB3, SLC26A4, and mtDNA did not reveal any mutation or SNPs in the patient and his mother. CONCLUSIONS This case report highlights the importance of detailed medical, dental, and family history examination, as well as multi-disciplinary teamwork for diagnosis and treatment of otodental syndrome.

Abstract
Vertebrate teeth are attached to the jawbones using a variety of methods but in mammals, a fibrous connection is the norm. This fibrous periodontal ligament (PDL) allows teeth to move in the jawbones in response to natural eruptive forces, mastication, and orthodontic tooth movement. In some disease states the PDL either calcifies or is replaced by a mineralized tissue and the result is ankylosis, where the tooth is fused to the alveolar bone. To understand how the PDL maintains this fibrous state, we examined a strain of mice in which tooth movement is arrested. DaβcatOt mice express a stabilized form of β-catenin in DMP1-positive alveolar bone osteocytes and cementocytes, which results in elevated Wnt signaling throughout the periodontium. As a consequence, there is an accrual of massive amounts of cellular cementum and alveolar bone, the PDL itself calcifies and teeth become ankylosed. These data suggest that to maintain its fibrous nature, Wnt signaling must normally be repressed in the PDL space.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare the detection of gubernacular canals (GC) and their characteristics in normal and abnormal tooth eruption. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with unerupted teeth were classified according to sex and age. Each tooth was classified according to dental group, eruption status, formation status, angulation, and GC detection. The opening of the GC in the alveolar crest and the attachment sites in relation to the dental follicle were assessed. Data were analyzed by the chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS Cone-beam computed tomography scans of 159 patients were evaluated. The final sample (N = 598) consisted of 423 teeth with normal eruption, 140 impacted teeth, and 35 teeth with delayed eruption. The overall detection rate of GC was 90.6%. These rates were 94.1%, 87.1%, and 62.9% for normal eruption, impacted teeth, and delayed eruption, respectively. GC detection rates were higher in the early stages of tooth formation in normal tooth eruption and in impacted teeth. The rate of GC detection was even lower in delayed teeth when they were angulated. Unusual attachment sites of the GC to the dental follicle were associated with abnormal eruption status. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study suggest that GC characteristics may indicate an abnormal eruption status.

Abstract
Osseous eruption is an important stage of tooth eruption process. The role of periodontal ligament-associated protein-1 (PLAP-1/asporin) in the development of osseous eruption canal remain undefined and were the focus of this study. C57BL/6 mice at postnatal days P11-13 and P 15-16 were chosen. The development of osseous eruption canal of lower first molar was observed and osteoclasts were detected by staining for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). PLAP-1 expression in the process of osseous eruption (OE, P11-13) and post- osseous eruption (P-OE, P15-16) was assessed by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and western blotting. Receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) distribution in the process was also assessed by immunohistochemistry. A double immunofluorescence stain was used to reveal PLAP-1 in association with CD68 (osteoclast maker). Fresh occlusal tissues of erupting lower first molars at OE and P-OE were separated to detected RANKL/OPG ratio by western blotting to elucidate related mechanisms. At osseous eruption (OE), osseous and mucosal tissues could be observed on the occlusal side of lower first molar. Osseous eruption canal was developing. Many osteoclasts were found around occlusal alveolar bone in the development of osseous eruption canal. At post- osseous eruption (P-OE), osseous eruption canal had been built, only mucosal tissues were observed, and few osteoclasts were detected. More PLAP-1 expression was detected at OE, compared with that at P-OE. Similar distributions of PLAP-1 and RANKL in occlusal bone tissues of erupting lower first molars were detected at OE. Colocalization of PLAP-1 and CD68 revealed the positive relationship between PLAP-1 and osteoclasts in the development of osseous eruption canal. PLAP-1 positively correlated with RANKL and CD68+ osteoclasts, and areas of bone resorption. Higher RANKL/OPG ratio was detected at OE, compared with that at P-OE. PLAP-1 gets involved in the development of osseous eruption canal.

Abstract
A major component of tooth innervation is made of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferents (CSPA). These fibers play a key role in tooth pain and inflammation; little is known, however, about the role of CSPA in tooth eruption. The aim of this study was to examine the role of the capsaicin-sensitive afferents in the process of eruption of intact rat incisors. CSPA fibers in several rat groups, were subjected to one of the following experimental procedures: systemic chemical ablation, systemic ablation followed by chemical sympathectomy and localized activation. The observed effects on incisor eruption were compared to those made on controls. The total amount of eruption in control/naïve rats, measured over a total period of 144 h, was 3.18 ± 0.07 mm and decreased to 2.43 ± 0.08 mm (n = 7; p < 0.001) following systemic ablation of CSPA. Further decrease to 2.24 ± 0.08 mm (n = 7; p < 0.001) was noticed when chemical sympathectomy was added to CSPA ablation. The average rate of eruption was 1.7 ± 0.25 mm following CSPA activation, compared to an average of 0.8 ± 0.07 mm for controls (n = 7; p < 0.001). Capsaicin sensitive fibers play an important role in tooth homeostasis, and intact neural supply is required for tooth growth under normal conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Untreated dental caries is reported to affect children's nutritional status and growth, yet evidence on this relationship is conflicting. The aim of this study was to assess the association between dental caries in both the primary and permanent dentition and nutritional status (including underweight, normal weight, overweight and stunting) in children from Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR over a period of 2 years. A second objective was to assess whether nutritional status affects the eruption of permanent teeth. METHODS Data were used from the Fit for School - Health Outcome Study: a cohort study with a follow-up period of 2 years, consisting of children from 82 elementary schools in Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR. From each school, a random sample of six to seven-year-old children was selected. Dental caries and odontogenic infections were assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria and the pufa-index. Weight and height measurements were converted to BMI-for-age and height-for-age z-scores and categorized into weight status and stunting following WHO standardised procedures. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations were analysed using the Kruskal Wallis test, Mann Whitney U-test and multivariate logistic and linear regression. RESULTS Data of 1499 children (mean age at baseline = 6.7 years) were analyzed. Levels of dental caries and odontogenic infections in the primary dentition were significantly highest in underweight children, as well as in stunted children, and lowest in overweight children. Dental caries in six to seven-year old children was also significantly associated with increased odds of being underweight and stunted 2 years later. These associations were not consistently found for dental caries and odontogenic infections in the permanent dentition. Underweight and stunting was significantly associated with a lower number of erupted permanent teeth in children at the age of six to seven-years-old and 2 years later. CONCLUSIONS Underweight and stunted growth are associated with untreated dental caries and a delayed eruption of permanent teeth in children from Cambodia, Indonesia and Lao PDR. Findings suggest that oral health may play an important role in children's growth and general development. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was restrospectively registered with the German Clinical Trials Register, University of Freiburg (trial registration number: DRKS00004485 ; date of registration: 26th of February, 2013).

Abstract
Objective This study was performed to explore the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in the periodontal ligament (PDL) of young and adult rats during post-emergent tooth eruption in opposed and unopposed teeth at two time points: 3 and 15 days after antagonist loss. Methods Four-week-old (n = 20) and 22-week-old (n = 20) male Wistar rats were used. The right maxillary molar crowns were cut down. PDL samples were isolated from the first mandibular molars at two time points: 3 and 15 days after cut-down of the right maxillary molars. Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical staining were performed to detect differences in α-SMA expression in the PDL tissues of unopposed versus opposed molars. Results α-SMA was upregulated in the PDL of the unopposed molars in the 3-day group of young rats. The region around the root apex of the unopposed molars in this group exhibited strong immunostaining for α-SMA. The expression level and immunoreactivity of α-SMA did not differ in both time points in young controls and among all the adult groups. Conclusion α-SMA-positive myofibroblasts are implicated in post-emergent tooth eruption of unopposed molars of young animals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was the clinical and molecular characterization of a family segregating a trait consisting of a phenotype specifically involving the maxillary canines, including agenesis, impaction and ectopic eruption, characterized by incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. DESIGN Clinical standardized assessment of 14 family members and a whole-exome sequencing (WES) of three affected subjects were performed. WES data analyses (sequence alignment, variant calling, annotation and prioritization) were carried out using an in-house implemented pipeline. Variant filtering retained coding and splice-site high quality private and rare variants. Variant prioritization was performed taking into account both the disruptive impact and the biological relevance of individual variants and genes. Sanger sequencing was performed to validate the variants of interest and to carry out segregation analysis. RESULTS Prioritization of variants "by function" allowed the identification of multiple variants contributing to the trait, including two concomitant heterozygous variants in EDARADD (c.308C>T, p.Ser103Phe) and COL5A1 (c.1588G>A, p.Gly530Ser), specifically associated with a more severe phenotype (i.e. canine agenesis). Differently, heterozygous variants in genes encoding proteins with a role in the WNT pathway were shared by subjects showing a phenotype of impacted/ectopic erupted canines. CONCLUSIONS This study characterized the genetic contribution underlying a complex trait consisting of isolated canine anomalies in a medium-sized family, highlighting the role of WNT and EDA cell signaling pathways in tooth development.

Abstract
Background In this study, we present a case of unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) treated by marsupialization followed by surgical enucleation as a conservative approach. UA is a rare, benign, less aggressive, and less invasive variant of ameloblastoma that is observed quite often in younger patients. Radical approaches have effects on the physical and psychological development of a growing young patient; therefore, conservative approaches are widely used for UA management in children. Case presentation This report described a case of an 11-year-old girl with UA of the mandibular molar–ramus area, which also involved impaction of the second and third molars. The lesion was marsupialized, and 31 months after marsupialization, surgical enucleation was performed with extraction of the impacted third molar. The second molar, which was preserved, spontaneously and completely erupted. No recurrence was observed during a 49-month follow-up. Conclusions Conservative treatments for UA in young patients have more advantages. Our results provide evidence that marsupialization is effective in regressing the lesion size to ease complete removal, preserving mandibular growth, maintaining involved second molar, and promoting the eruption of the tooth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare the eruption rates of lower second premolars (LPm2) at different developmental stages using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospectively, 31 individuals (9.77 ± 1.25 years) had their LPm2 scored according to the Demirjian method, and afterwards they were split into three groups according to developmental stage, as follows: D = complete-formed crowns; E = root length less than crown height; and F = root length greater than or equal to crown height. Linear distances from the LPm2 crown tip to the anatomical reference line (ARL) and to the occlusal plane line (OPL) were measured in paired CBCT scans (T1, T2), taken with an average interval of 8.6 months between them. Eruption rates (mm/y) were calculated and then compared between groups. RESULTS Eruption rates were greater for LPm2 at stage F than at stages D or E (P < .01) regardless of whether they were measured from the ARL (D = 2.84 mm/y; E = 2.55 mm/y; F = 5.38 mm/y) or from the OPL (D = 1.82 mm/y; E = 2.02 mm/y; F = 5.26 mm/y). Eruption rates evaluated from the ARL and the OPL had no statistically significant differences (P = .052), and a positive correlation (r = .79, P < .001) between them was observed. CONCLUSIONS LPm2 at Demirjian stage F showed greater eruption rates than at stages D or E, regardless of whether rates were measured from the ARL or the OPL. Faster eruption is expected for LPm2 at stage F. Evaluation of the LPm2's developmental stage using CBCT can aid in clinical decision making regarding the correct timing for intervention.

Abstract
AIM This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the prevalence of teething-related pain and fever and the early-life factors that may affect the risk of experiencing these disturbances within the first 1.5 years of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants were recruited (n = 1033) through the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort (n = 1237). Interviews were performed tri-monthly regarding the prevalence of teething pain and fever in children from 6 to 18 months of age. Crude and multivariable analyses were conducted using Poisson-log regression models. RESULTS Prevalence rates for teething pain and fever were 35.5 and 49.9 % respectively. Multivariable Poisson regression analysis showed maternal second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure to increase the risk of both pain (mean ratio = 1.35; p = 0.006) and fever (mean ratio = 1.22; p = 0.025), whereas SHS exposure plus active smoking further increased risk of teething pain in the children (mean ratio = 1.89; p = 0.029). Delivery via Caesarean section increased risk of teething pain (mean ratio = 1.27; p = 0.033), while prenatal plasma vitamin D insufficiency lowered such a risk (mean ratio = 0.62; p = 0.012). Compared to Chinese infants, Indian babies exhibited lower risk of teething pain and fever (both p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Early-life factors such as tobacco smoke exposure and vitamin insufficiency during pregnancy, ethnicity and childbirth via Caesarean section may significantly affect the child's susceptibility to teething-related pain and fever. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Knowledge of prevalence and risk factors of teething disturbances may better equip primary caregivers and healthcare professionals to accurately detect teething-related local and/or systemic signs/symptoms and effectively facilitate tobacco cessation among pregnant women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to assess long-term impact of tooth eruption stages (ES) on sealant retention on occlusal surfaces previously coated with intermediary bonding layer and to determine caries prevention. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-five school children were selected (aged 6-10 years), with four non-carious permanent first molar in different ES (OP (operculum present), ME (marginal edge), CE (completely erupted)). Split-mouth and single-blind study design was used. The teeth (260) were randomly selected according to treatment (sealant/technique): F (Fluroshield), H (Helioseal Clear Chroma), SF (Single Bond + F), EH (Excite + H). Sealant retention, marginal integrity, discoloration, and caries prevention were assessed after 6, 12, 18, and 24 months by calibrated examiner (Spearman = 0.91) using visual inspection. Data were submitted to the Cox proportional hazard model (survival analysis) and Likelihood ratio χ 2 test (correlation), p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS At baseline, ES was 20 % in OP, 54 % in ME, and 26 % in CE. There was no significant difference on sealant retention between the treatments (p = 0.2774). However, significant differences were found regarding the ES on sealant retention (p = 0.0041). The CE stage showed the highest retention survival rate during the 24 months. The overall sealant prevention average was found to be about 99.4 % and showed no difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Eruption stages affect sealant retention irregardless of the intermediate layer and type of sealant. However, there was caries prevention on tooth occlusal surfaces after 24 months, regardless of treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Sealing is recommended to prevent occlusal caries of newly erupted teeth in high-caries-risk patients. However, its application is critical on moisture limited control surfaces independently of sealer material and technique.

Abstract
AIM Early eruption of permanent teeth has been associated with childhood obesity and diabetes mellitus, suggesting links between tooth eruption and metabolic conditions. This longitudinal study aimed to identify pre-, peri- and postnatal factors with metabolic consequences during infancy that may affect the eruption timing of the first primary tooth (ETFT) in children from an ethnically heterogeneous population residing within the same community. MATERIAL AND METHODS Participants were recruited (n = 1033) through the GUSTO (Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes) birth cohort (n = 1237). Oral examinations were performed at 3-month intervals from 6 to 18 months of age. Crude and adjusted analyses, with generalized linear modelling, were conducted to link ETFT to potential determinants occurring during pregnancy, delivery/birth and early infancy. RESULTS Overall mean eruption age of the first primary tooth was 8.5 (SD 2.6) months. Earlier tooth eruption was significantly associated with infant's rate of weight gain during the first 3 months of life and increased maternal childbearing age. Compared to their Chinese counterparts, Malay and Indian children experienced significantly delayed tooth eruption by 1.2 and 1.7 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Infant weight gain from birth to 3 months, ethnicity and maternal childbearing age were significant determinants of first tooth eruption timing. Early life influences can affect primary tooth development, possibly via metabolic pathways. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Timing of tooth eruption is linked to general growth and metabolic function. Therefore, it has potential in forecasting oral and systemic conditions such as caries and obesity.

Abstract
The aim of this study investigates mesiodistal crown size of the maxillary and mandibular incisors of patients with palatally impacted canines (PDC). Pretreatment dental casts of orthodontic patients with PDC of one or both maxillary canines (N: 33) were collected. This PDC sample was matched according to age and sex with pretreatment dental casts from unaffected orthodontic patients. For the PDC and matched control samples, maximum mesiodistal crown diameters were recorded for the four incisors on the right side only. The results showed that, on average, the mesiodistal crown diameters for the maxillary and mandibular incisors measured smaller in the PDC sample than in the control sample. These findings of statistically significant tooth-size reductions associated with PDC occurrence indicate a generalized pattern of reduced tooth size as a characteristic associated with the PDC anomaly. Further, the presence of generalized tooth-size reduction in cases with palatally displaced canines help explain why most orthodontic treatment plans for PDC patients are of the nonextraction type.

Abstract
ClC-7, located in late endosomes and lysosomes, is critical for the function of osteoclasts. Secretion of Cl(-) by the ruffled border of osteoclasts enables H(+) secretion by v-H(+)-ATPases to dissolve bone mineral. Mice lacking ClC-7 show altered lysosomal function that leads to severe lysosomal storage. Maturation ameloblasts are epithelial cells with a ruffled border that secrete Cl(-) as well as endocytose and digest large quantities of enamel matrix proteins during formation of dental enamel. We tested the hypothesis that ClC-7 in maturation ameloblasts is required for intracellular digestion of matrix fragments to complete enamel mineralization. Craniofacial bones and developing teeth in Clcn7(-/-) mice were examined by micro-CT, immunohistochemistry, quantified histomorphometry and electron microscopy. Osteoclasts and ameloblasts in wild-type mice stained intensely with anti-ClC-7 antibody but not in Clcn7(-/-) mice. Craniofacial bones in Clcn7(-/-) mice were severely osteopetrotic and contained 1.4- to 1.6-fold more bone volume, which was less mineralized than the wild-type littermates. In Clcn7(-/-) mice maturation ameloblasts and osteoclasts highly expressed Ae2 as in wild-type mice. However, teeth failed to erupt, incisors were much shorter and roots were disfigured. Molars formed a normal dental crown. In compacted teeth, dentin was slightly less mineralized, enamel did not retain a matrix and mineralized fairly normal. We concluded that ClC-7 is essential for osteoclasts to resorb craniofacial bones to enable tooth eruption and root development. Disruption of Clcn7 reduces bone and dentin mineral density but does not affect enamel mineralization.
