Evaluation of optimised 3D turbo spin echo and gradient echo MR pulse sequences of the knee at 3T and 1.5T

INTRODUCTION

To investigate the impact of parameter optimisation for novel three-dimensional 3D sequences at 1.5T and 3T on resultant image quality.

METHODS

Following institutional review board approval and acquisition of informed consent, MR phantom and knee joint imaging on healthy volunteers (n = 16) was performed with 1.5 and 3T MRI scanners, respectively incorporating 8- and 15-channel phased array knee radiofrequency coils. The MR phantom and healthy volunteers were prospectively scanned over a six-week period. Acquired sequences included standard two-dimensional (2D) turbo spin echo (TSE) and novel three-dimensional (3D) TSE PDW (SPACE) both with and without fat-suppression, and T2∗W gradient echo (TrueFISP) sequences. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were measured for knee anatomical structures. Two musculoskeletal radiologists evaluated anatomical structure visualisation and image quality. Quantitative and qualitative findings were investigated for differences using Friedman tests. Inter- and intra-observer agreements were determined with κ statistics.

RESULTS

Phantom and healthy volunteer images revealed higher SNR for sequences acquired at 3T (p-value <0.05). Generally, the qualitative findings ranked images acquired at 3T higher than corresponding images acquired at 1.5T (p < 0.05). 3D image data sets demonstrated less sensitivity to partial volume averaging artefact (PVA) compared to 2D sequences. Inter- and intra-observer agreements for evaluation across all sequences ranged from 0.61 to 0.79 and 0.71 to 0.92, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Both 2D and 3D images demonstrated higher image quality at 3T than at 1.5T. Optimised 3D sequences performed better than the standard 2D PDW TSE sequence for contrast resolution between cartilage and joint fluid, with reduced PVA artefact.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

With rapid advances in MRI scanner technology, including hardware and software, the optimisation of 3D MR pulse sequences to reduce scan time while maintaining image quality, will improve diagnostic accuracy and patient management in musculoskeletal MRI.

Look-Locker FAIR TrueFISP for arterial spin labelling on mouse at 9.4 T

Pulsed arterial spin labelling remains a non-invasive and highly used method for the study of rodent cerebral blood flow (CBF). Flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) is one of the most commonly used MR-sequences for this purpose and exists with many different strategies to record the images. This study investigates Look-Locker (LL) TrueFISP readout for FAIR as an alternative to the standard EPI readout, which is provided by the manufacturer. The aim was to show the improved image quality using TrueFISP and to verify the reproducibility of the determination of the cerebral blood flow values. The measurement of many inversion points also allowed to investigate the influence of the correct blood relaxation rate on the fit of the CBF data. For the LL-FAIR TrueFISP an in-house written method was created. The method was tested on a group of C57BL/6 mice at the field strength of 9.4 T. The results show CBF maps with less distortion than for EPI and the values found are in good agreement with the literature. A comparison of the CBF values found with EPI and LL-TrueFISP shows very small differences, most being not significant. In conclusion, the method presented gives equivalent CBF maps in comparison to standard FAIR-EPI. Both methods have the same measurement time. TrueFISP has the advantage to EPI of producing undistorted images over larger areas of the mouse brain. It is advisable to check the value of the blood relaxation rate by measurement or to estimate it as a fitting parameter.

On the application of balanced steady-state free precession to MR microscopy

OBJECTIVE

The applicability of the balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) sequence to the field of MR microscopy was investigated, since the potentially high SNR makes bSSFP attractive. However, particularly at ultra-high magnetic fields, a number of constraints emerge: the frequency sensitivity of the bSSFP signal, the duty cycle of the imaging gradients, and the intrinsic diffusion attenuation of the steady state due to the imaging gradients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Optimization of the bSSFP sequence was performed on three imaging systems (7 T and 9.4 T) suited for MR microscopy. Since biological samples are often imaged in the very proximity of materials from sample containers/holder or devices such as electrodes, several microscopy phantoms representing such circumstances were fabricated and examined with 3D bSSFP.

RESULTS

Artifact-free microscopic bSSFP images could be obtained with voxel sizes down to 16 µm × 16 µm × 78 µm and with an SNR gain of 25% over standard gradient echo images.

CONCLUSION

With appropriate choice of phantom materials, optimization of the flip angle to the diffusion-attenuated steady state and protocols considering duty-cycle limitations, bSSFP can be a valuable tool in MR microscopy.

Physiological and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Balanced Steady-state Free Precession

Balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) is a highly efficient pulse sequence that is known to provide the highest signal-to-noise ratio per unit time. Recently, bSSFP is getting increasingly popular in both the research and clinical communities. This review will be focusing on the application of the bSSFP technique in the context of probing the physiological and functional information. In the first part of this review, the basic principles of bSSFP are briefly covered. Afterwards, recent developments related to the application of bSSFP, in terms of physiological and functional imaging, are introduced and reviewed. Despite its long development history, bSSFP is still a promising technique that has many potential benefits for obtaining high-resolution physiological and functional images.
