Associations of humor, morale, and unit cohesion on posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms

Military personnel experience many stressors during deployments that can lead to symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, not all military personnel who are exposed to deployment stressors develop PTSD symptoms. Recent research has explored factors that contribute to military personnel resilience, a multifaceted and multidetermined construct, as a means to mitigate and prevent PTSD symptoms. Much of this research has focused on the effects of individual-level factors (e.g., use of coping strategies like humor, the morale of individual unit members), with some research focusing on unit-level factors (e.g., the cohesiveness of a unit). However, there is little research exploring how these factors relate to each other in mitigating or reducing PTSD symptoms. In this study, we examined the association between deployment stressors, perceived unit cohesion, morale, humor, and PTSD symptoms in a sample of 20,901 active-duty military personnel using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that perceived unit cohesion, humor, and morale were positively associated with each other and negatively associated with PTSD symptoms over and above the effect of deployment stressors. These findings highlight the influence of resilience factors on PTSD symptoms beyond their substantial overlap and have implications for future research as well as the potential development of interventions for military personnel.

Examining the interaction of autism spectrum disorder-related traits and unit cohesion on suicide risk among military personnel

BACKGROUND

Suicide rates are elevated among United States (U.S.) military service members. Research has found that service members with autism spectrum disorder-related (ASD-related) traits are at increased risk for suicide. Complementary lines of inquiry have suggested that unit cohesion is a protective factor against developing suicidal ideation in military service members. However, given the social difficulties inherent in ASD, it is unclear whether unit cohesion might protect against suicide risk in this population.

METHOD

Our sample consisted of 285 active duty U.S. military service members recruited online. We examined the interaction between ASD-related traits (as measured by the Autism Spectrum Quotient [AQ]), unit cohesion, and suicide risk (as measured by the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised [SBQ-R]). We also conducted exploratory analyses to examine whether unit cohesion attenuates the association between ASD-related traits and suicidal intent.

RESULTS

Elevated ASD-related traits were independently associated with higher levels of global suicide risk; however, unit cohesion was not independently associated with suicide risk. Unit cohesion did not significantly interact with ASD-related traits to predict suicide risk. Finally, we found that elevated ASD-related traits and unit cohesion have an independent effect on current suicidal intent.

DISCUSSION

Our findings suggest that unit cohesion might not buffer the effect of ASD-related traits on suicide risk. However, our results do show that greater unit cohesion may be independently associated with decreased suicidal intent. This study is limited by a cross-sectional design and use of self-report measures.

Leader provided purpose: Military leadership behavior and its association with suicidal ideation

Suicide in U.S. Army Soldiers is of major concern as it is estimated that over 100 Soldiers die by suicide each year. Examining risk and protective factors is essential to develop both an understanding of Soldier suicide as well as inform systemic interventions to reduce suicide. One potential systemic approach is to embed preventive mechanisms within the structure of the military rather than the typical administration of primary intervention through mandatory training. To examine potential mechanisms of leader-based interventions, several leadership behaviors were assessed in a cross-sectional sample of n = 1,096 active duty Soldiers. Soldiers completed self-report measures of interpersonal predictors of suicide, suicidal ideation (SI), leadership behaviors, and unit cohesion. Logistic regression was used to identify leadership behaviors related to SI. Only the leader behavior attempting to foster a sense of purpose predicted SI. Leader provided purpose (LPP) was then entered into indirect effect analyses to evaluate the mechanisms of this relationship. Analyses revealed that LPP predicted SI through unit cohesion, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness. Results demonstrate that specific aspects of military leadership such as fostering Soldier purpose may enhance resilience and reduce risk for SI.

The impact of social support, unit cohesion, and trait resilience on PTSD in treatment-seeking military personnel with PTSD: The role of posttraumatic cognitions

BACKGROUND

The personal resources of social support, unit cohesion, and trait resilience have been found to be associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity among military personnel. However, the underlying mechanisms of these relationships are unclear. We hypothesized that negative posttraumatic cognitions, which are associated with PTSD, mediate the relationships between these personal resources and PTSD.

METHODS

The relationship between PTSD symptom severity and a latent factor comprised of social support, unit cohesion, and trait resilience was evaluated using cross-sectional data from 366 treatment-seeking active duty military personnel with PTSD following deployments to or near Iraq or Afghanistan. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test whether posttraumatic cognitions mediated this relationship.

RESULTS

The SEM model indicated that (1) a robust latent variable named personal resources (indicated by social support, unit cohesion, and trait resilience) was negatively associated with PTSD severity; (2) personal resources were negatively associated with negative posttraumatic cognitions; (3) negative posttraumatic cognitions fully mediated the association between personal resources and PTSD severity. The final SEM mediation model showed a highly satisfactory fit [χ² (22) = 16.344, p = 0.798; χ²/df = 0.743; CFI = 1; RMSEA = 0.000].

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that among active duty military personnel seeking treatment for PTSD, personal resources (social support, unit cohesion, and trait resilience) may mitigate PTSD severity by reducing negative posttraumatic cognitions.
