Abstract
Despite the robust correlation between metabolic disorders and heavy metals, there has been limited research on the associations between nickel levels and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as liver fibrosis. This study aimed to examine the associations among urinary nickel, NAFLD, and liver fibrosis. The data utilized in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020. A comprehensive screening process was conducted, resulting in the inclusion of a total of 3169 American adults in the analysis. The measurement of urinary nickel was conducted through inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was employed to assess the controlled attenuation parameter and liver stiffness measurement as indicators for NAFLD and liver fibrosis, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the associations among urinary nickel, NAFLD, and liver fibrosis. Restricted cubic splines were employed to explored the nonlinear associations. After adjusting for all covariates, the correlation between the highest quartile of urinary nickel and NAFLD was found to be significant (OR = 1.65; 95% CI, 1.19-2.27). Subgroup analysis revealed that the correlation was significant only in men. A significant association occurred between the second quartile of urinary nickel and liver fibrosis (OR 1.88; 95% CI, 1.22-2.90). Restricted cubic spline showed that the relationship was linear between urinary nickel and NAFLD and non-monotonic, inverse U-shaped between urinary nickel and liver fibrosis. This cross-sectional study indicated that the risk of NAFLD is associated with urinary nickel, and this correlation was only present among males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing body fat or decreasing muscle and bone mass were associated with worse health outcomes in the adult population. The effects of nickel exposure on body composition are not known. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between urinary nickel levels and body compositions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two thousand seven hundred sixty-two participants were included in the analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 2017-2018 after excluding participants who have missing data on urinary nickel and those with missing all body mass component data. We used weighted generalized linear models to explore the relationship between urinary nickel and body mass components under interpolating missing covariable values. Simultaneously, sensitivity analyses and subgroup analysis were conducted to verify stability of analysis result. Curve fitting and saturation effect analysis were used to explore the possible nonlinear relationship between urine nickel and body compositions. RESULTS Among the 2,762 participants, the average urinary nickel level was 1.58 ug/L. The weighted generalized linear models, the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses found no significant linear relationship between urinary nickel and body compositions. For body weight, BMI, TLM, ALM, TRF, TOF and BMC, the urine nickel saturation effect values were 0.76, 0.74, 0.5, 0.67, 0.64, 0.48, and 0.45 ug/L, respectively. For each 1 ug/L rise in urinary nickel levels at levels below the turning point, body weight increases (β = 9.06, 95% CI = 2.75, 15.36, p = 0.01), BMI increases (β = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.36, 5.05, p = < 0.001), TLM decreases (β = -47.39, 95% CI = -97.38, 2.59, p = 0.06), ALM decreases (β = -37.25, 95% CI = -63.25, -11.24, p = 0.01), TRF increases (β = 20.68, 95% CI = 1.50, 39.86, p = 0.03), TOF increases (β = 57.92, 95% CI = -0.12, 115.95, p = 0.05), and BMC decreases (β = -6.84, 95% CI = -12.64, -1.04, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS In summary, our study demonstrated that a dose-response relationship exists between urinary nickel and body compositions, with a low inflection point level of urinary nickel for the saturation effect.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship of urinary nickel (U-Ni) exposure to serum lipid profiles and the mediation effect of body mass index (BMI) in a US general population. We analyzed the cross-sectional data from 3517 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2017-March 2020). Multivariable linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were conducted to explore the association of U-Ni with four serum lipids and four lipids-derived indicators. Mediation analysis was performed to examine the effect of BMI on the relationship between U-Ni levels and serum lipid profiles. Compared with the lowest quartile, the β with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in the highest quartile were - 12.83 (- 19.42, - 6.25) for total cholesterol (TC) (P for trend < 0.001), - 12.76 (- 19.78, - 5.74) for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) (P for trend = 0.001) and - 0.29 (- 0.51, - 0.07) for TC/HDL-C (P for trend = 0.007) in the fully adjusted model. RCS plots showed the linear association of log2-transformed U-Ni levels with TC, non-HDL-C and TC/HDL-C (P for nonlinearity = 0.294, 0.152, and 0.087, respectively). Besides, BMI decreased monotonically in correlation with increasing U-Ni levels (P for trend < 0.001). Mediation analysis revealed that BMI significantly mediated the relationship of U-Ni to TC, non-HDL-C and TC/HDL-C with mediated proportions of 11.17%, 22.20% and 36.44%, respectively. In summary, our findings suggest that BMI mediates the negative association of U-Ni with TC, non-HDL-C, and TC/HDL-C in the US general population.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the association between nickel exposure and the presence of diabetes (DM). The participants were analyzed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2017-2018. Urinary nickel exposure was measured using inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. DM was diagnosed based on the WHO standards. The association between nickel and DM or fasting glucose was examined using multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models. A total of 1899 participants (933 men and 966 women) were included in our study, of whom 342 (18.0%) were diagnosed with DM. There was a significant positive association between nickel level and DM (OR: 1.27, 95%CI: 1.04-1.56) after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Comparing with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile independently increased a 0.66-fold higher risk of DM (OR: 1.66, 95%CI: 1.13-2.44]). In addition, nickel exposure was independently related to the level of fasting glucose. The exposure to nickel was associated with a higher risk of DM in general population.

Abstract
This study is to investigate the association between nickel exposure and serum lipid profiles. We analyzed the population from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2017-2018. Urinary nickel exposure was measured using inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. Serum lipid profiles, including triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), were measured using the standard biochemistry assays. The association between urinary nickel and lipid profiles was examined using multivariable linear regression models and restricted cubic spine plots. There was a significant negative relationship between nickel level and TC (β, - 9.67; 95% CI, - 13.58 to - 5.76), HDL-C (β, - 1.57; 95% CI, - 2.98 to - 0.16), and LDL-C (β, - 5.88; 95% CI, - 11.04 to - 0.71) after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Furthermore, restricted cubic spines showed that only HDL-C was nonlinearly associated with nickel (p for nonlinearity 0.004). However, nickel exposure was not related to the level of triglyceride. The exposure to nickel was linearly associated with serum total cholesterol and LDL-C while nonlinearly associated with HDL-C in general population.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association of the level of nickel and blood pressure (BP) level in a general population. METHODS A total of 2201 participants were enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2017-2018. Urinary nickel level was measured using inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. Multivariable linear regressions were performed to explore the associations between nickel and systolic BP and diastolic BP. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the nonlinearity. RESULTS Per one-fold increase of nickel was associated with a 0.67-unit decrease of diastolic BP (β -0.67, 95 % confidence interval [CI] [-1.15, -0.18]; p = 0.007). Comparing with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile decreased 2.21-unit diastolic BP (β -2.21, 95 % CI [-3.84, -0.59]; p = 0.007). Restricted cubic spline confirmed the relationship was linear. Subgroup analysis found that the association was only significant in population without hypertension. CONCLUSIONS The urinary nickel, as a long-term exposure biomarker, was associated with the diastolic BP in individuals without hypertension.
