Degradation of ciprofloxacin by persulfate activated by Fe(III)-doped BiOCl composite photocatalyst

Fe-BOC-X photocatalyst was successfully prepared by solvothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of Fe-BOC-X was determined by ciprofloxacin (CIP), a typical fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Under sunlight irradiation, all Fe-BOC-X showed better CIP removal performance than original BiOCl. In comparison, the photocatalyst with iron content of 50 wt% (Fe-BOC-3) has excellent structural stability and the best adsorption photodegradation efficiency. The removal rate of CIP (10 mg/L) by Fe-BOC-3 (0.6 g/L) reached 81.4% within 90 min. At the same time, the effects of photocatalyst dosage, pH, persulfate, persulfate concentration, and combinations of different systems (PS, Fe-BOC-3, Vis/PS, Vis/Fe-BOC-3, Fe-BOC-3/PS, and Vis/Fe-BOC-3/PS) on the reaction were systematically discussed. In reactive species trapping experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) signals revealed that the photogenerated holes (h+), hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (•SO4-), and superoxide radical (•O2-) played an important role in CIP degradation; hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (•SO4-) play a major role. Various characterization methods have demonstrated that Fe-BOC-X has larger specific surface area and pore volume than original BiOCl. UV-vis DRS indicate that Fe-BOC-X has wider visible light absorption and faster photocarrier transfer and provides abundant surface oxygen absorption sites for effective molecular oxygen activation. Accordingly, a large number of active species were produced and participated in the photocatalytic process, thus effectively promoting the degradation of ciprofloxacin. Based on HPLC-MS analysis, two possible decomposition pathways of CIP were finally proposed. The main degradation pathways of CIP are mainly due to the high electron density of piperazine ring in CIP molecule, which is mainly attacked by various free radicals. The main reactions include piperazine ring opening, decarbonylation, decarboxylation, and fluorine substitution. This study can better open up a new way for the design of visible light driven photocatalyst and provide more ideas for the removal of CIP in water environment.

A novel MIL-125(Ti)-based nanocomposite for enhanced adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride: Synergetic mechanism of calcination and the nitrogen-containing reticulated surface layer

A multi-nitrogen conjugated organic molecule (TPE-2Py) was selected to surface modify the calcined MIL-125(Ti) to prepare a nanocomposite (TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti)) for adsorption and photodegradation of organic pollutant (tetracycline hydrochloride) under visible light. A novel reticulated surface layer was formed on the nanocomposite, and the adsorption capacity of TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) for tetracycline hydrochloride can reach 157.7 mg/g under neutral conditions, which is higher than that of most other reported materials. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies show that the adsorption is a spontaneous heat absorption process, dominated by chemisorption, in which electrostatic interaction, π-π conjugation and Ti-N covalent bonds played dominant roles. The photocatalytic study shows that the visible photo-degradation efficiency of TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) for tetracycline hydrochloride can further reach 89.1% after adsorption. Mechanism studies reveal that •O₂^- and h⁺ play a major role in the degradation process, and the separation and transfer rate of photo-generated carriers increase, improving its visible photocatalytic performance. This study revealed the relationship between the adsorption/photocatalytic properties of the nanocomposite and the structure of the molecular as well as the calcination, providing a convenient strategy to regulate the removal efficiency of MOFs materials towards organic pollutants. Furthermore, TPE-2Py@DSMIL-125(Ti) exhibits good reusability and even better removal efficiency for tetracycline hydrochloride in real water samples, indicating its sustainable treatment of pollutants in contaminated water.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of rhombohedral ZnIn2S4 with high visible photocatalytic activity for aqueous pollutants removal

The phase composition of photocatalyst has a substantial effect on its photocatalytic activity. In this work, the rhombohedral phase ZnIn₂S₄ was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method by using inexpensive Na₂S as a sulfur source with the assistance of NaCl. The Na₂S as the S source can promote the generation of rhombohedral ZnIn₂S₄, and the addition of NaCl enhances the crystallinity of the as-prepared rhombohedral ZnIn₂S₄. The rhombohedral ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets had a narrower energy gap, more negative conductive band potential, and higher separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers relative to the hexagonal ZnIn₂S₄. The as-synthesized rhombohedral ZnIn₂S₄ exhibited high visible photocatalytic activity with removal efficiencies of 96.7% in 80 min for the methyl orange, 86.3% in 120 min for ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and nearly 100% in 40 min for Cr(VI).

Hybrid multifunctional core/shell g-C3N4@TiO2 heterojunction nano-catalytic for photodegradation of organic dye and pharmaceutical compounds

The pyrolysis of melamine was an effective one-pot method for preparing a nanostructured multifunctional photocatalytic based on core/shell g-C₃N₄@TiO₂ heterojunction. Various techniques entirely characterized these materials: X-ray diffraction (XRD) proved to enhance the as-prepared materials' crystallinity through the variation of dislocation, strain, and crystallite size with TiO₂ loading. The stacked layered/sheet-like with a smooth surface of the as-prepared samples have been shown via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) showed an apparent decrease in the energy bandgap for these nanocomposites with TiO₂ loading. All the prepared materials were subjected to visible photocatalytic applications under the same conditions. The dye model (Methylene Blue, MB), and antibiotic model (Amoxicillin, AMO), was photodegraded using the as-prepared nanocomposites under visible light irradiation. In the recombination reduction among TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ interfaces, g-C₃N₄ has been effectively utilized as a matrix. Our findings proved that g-C₃N₄@TiO₂ photocatalysts exhibited superior photocatalytic performance. CNT-5 of 2.58 eV bandgap had a higher activity of 99.7 in 50 min for MB and 100% in 20 min for AMO than the other represented photocatalysts in this work. The migration of photogenerated electrons from a g-C₃N₄ to TiO₂ via heterojunction among them as g-C₃N₄ (1 0 1) removes the electrons accumulated on (1 0 1) of TiO₂, improve the photodegradation efficiency. Therefore, the increase in photocatalytic reaction rates, recycling, and the sample's photostability can be considered the result of successful interactions among the TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄ systems. The suggested photodegradation mechanism of MB and AMO was discussed in detail and compared with previously reported work. Therefore, the photodegradation rate of MB and AMO via CNT-5 composite is 6 and 3 times, respectively, higher than that of g-C₃N₄ under simulated solar irradiation. This research creates a new perspective on the production of nanocomposite materials in the area of treatment of pharmaceutical and dye contaminants.

Flexible photocatalytic membrane based on CdS/PMMA polymeric nanocomposite films: multifunctional materials

In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate) with different doping nano-cadmium sulfide (CdS/PMMA) is prepared and characterized. CdS/PMMA polymeric nanocomposite films were synthesized using solution casting methodology. SEM and XRD are used for structure analysis for the studied nanocomposite films. XRD revealed the amorphous domains of PMMA polymer, which increased with increasing CdS nanoparticle contents. SEM revealed the CdS dispersion within the PMMA matrix. CdS nanoparticles in the PMMA matrix are expected to be aggregated due to the casting technique. The optical energy gap is found to be decreased after the CdS addition. ε' and ε″ have the same behavior with the applied frequency. Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization is the responsible factor for higher values of ε'-ε″ at the higher frequencies. Electrical conductivity behavior σ_AC tends to obtain a constant value at lower frequencies that approach from its DC conductivity values. After doping PMMA with nano-CdS, an exponential increase after a critical frequency value and the values of σ_AC was also increased. Besides, a significant reduction in laser energy power is identified by the reduction of the output power. CdS/PMMA can attenuate the laser power due to its nonlinear effect. CdS/PMMA nanocomposite can act as a photocatalyst to improve the performance of the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Among the different CdS/PMMA nanocomposite films, 3.33 wt% CdS/PMMA demonstrates the highest efficiency in visible photocatalysis of Rhodamine B. CdS/PMMA can be utilized as multifunctional materials use like laser optical limiting to reduce the power of laser sources and as a photocatalyst membranes.

A Facile Method for Preparation of Cu2O-TiO2 NTA Heterojunction with Visible-Photocatalytic Activity

Based on highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs), we successfully fabricated the Cu2O-TiO2 NTA heterojunction by a simple thermal decomposition process for the first time. The anodic TiO2 NTAs were functioned as both "nano-container" and "nano-reactors" to load and synthesize the narrow band Cu2O nanoparticles. The loaded Cu2O expanded absorption spectrum of the TiO2 NTAs from ultraviolent range to visible light range. We found that the Cu2O-TiO2 NTA heterojunction films had visible activity towards photocatalytic degrading methyl orange (MO). The photocatalytic abilities of the Cu2O-TiO2 NTA heterojunction films were found increased with the Cu2O content from 0.05 to 0.3 mol/L. This could be explained by more electron-hole pairs generated and less recombination, when the Cu2O-TiO2 heterojunction got formed. Here, we put forward this promising method, hoping it can facilitate the mass production and applications of Cu2O-TiO2 NTA heterojunction.
