Changes of the Concentration of Short-Chain Fatty Acids in the Intestines of Mice with Different Types of Obesity

We studied the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) by the intestinal microbiota in mice with obesity caused by a diet and a genetic defect in the leptin receptor gene. In mice, intestinal contents were examined and SCFA were quantitatively assayed by gas chromatography. SCFA concentration in the intestinal contents of mice with alimentary obesity model was significantly lower in the first phase of the experiment (day 14), and the change in their production in dynamics was fundamentally different from this process in the control group (standard diet). The dynamics of the concentration of these metabolites in the model of genetic obesity was similar to that in the control, but the production of SCFA was significantly reduced in mice with leptin resistance in the middle phase (day 60) of the experiment. These findings indicate that the production of SCFA is more influenced by the diet than by leptin resistance.

Fracture risk in obesity: a narrative review

While low body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for fractures, the association between obesity and fracture risk is inconsistent and puzzling. Several studies reported higher fracture risk (FR), and others reported lower FR in obese populations. Our narrative review presents the overall incidence of fractures by anatomic locations in adult patients, geriatric populations, and in those after bariatric surgery. In conclusion, obesity should be considered as a fracture risk in adults, as well as falls and fractures in geriatric patients, in particular in those with sarcopenic obesity, and after bariatric surgery. The specific characteristics of fractures risk associated with obesity should be considered by physicians in the diagnostic and therapeutic work-up of obese patients. This review outlines the current literature on this topic and aims to guide physicians regarding proper decisions to prevent fractures in patients with obesity.

Effect of Chronic Administration of Obestatin and Its Fragment FNAP-NH2 on Behavioral Activity and Nociceptive Threshold in Rats with Normal and Excess Body Weight

The effects of chronic intranasal administration of 300 nmol/kg obestatin and its fragment FNAP-NH₂ on behavioral activity and nociceptive threshold were examined in male Wistar rats with normal body weight or alimentary obesity. In normal rats, obestatin produced no effect on behavior and nociception, whereas FNAP-NH₂ fragment enhanced risk-taking behavior. Rats with excess body weight demonstrated less pronounced risk-taking behavior and elevated nociceptive threshold in comparison with normal animals, but these differences were abolished by chronic administration of FNAP-NH₂.
