The Role of Empathic Communication in the Relationship between Servant Leadership and Workplace Loneliness: A Serial Mediation Model

Researchers have increasingly concentrated on loneliness in the workplace as a crucial factor influencing the mental health of employees and the viability of telework. In contrast, the current understanding of the strategies mitigating workplace loneliness and how leaders utilize their behaviors to impact followers' loneliness remains limited. Since servant leadership values the emotional needs of followers and displays a high level of empathy, this study investigated the direct and indirect effects of servant leadership on workplace loneliness. In this study, 267 employees (mean age = 31.5 years) from 28 provinces in China were recruited to participate in this survey. We proposed that servant leaders motivate their own empathic communication and other followers' empathic communication to reduce lonely followers' workplace loneliness. This research further examined the relationship between the leader's and colleagues' empathic communication, and the two jointly mediate the connection between servant leadership and followers' workplace loneliness. We constructed a serial mediation model to examine the relationships between servant leadership, leader's empathic communication, colleagues' empathic communication, and workplace loneliness. The results indicate that servant leadership creates a cycle of empathy and provides insights into building a culture of empathy to improve employee well-being.

The Present and Future of Virtual Reality in Medical Education: A Narrative Review

Virtual reality (VR) uses computer-generated and three-dimensional environments to create immersive experiences through the use of interactive devices that simulate virtual environments in many forms, such as 3D, screen-based, or room-based. Users can engage in the environment with objects, characters, and scenes, making individuals assume they are experiencing a real-life scenario. VR has been adopted across medical and nursing fields to supplement clinically relevant and practical teaching. However, the effectiveness of this interactive form of learning has come a long way with improvements in accessibility, cost, and technicalities. The immersive simulated environment that VR has to offer today initially began with screen-based learning and then the 360-video method. These previously sought-out methods were eventually found to disconnect the students from engaging in the learning environment that present-day VR systems are designed to provide. Interactive VR offers a dynamic platform for medical training. These simulations benefit the learner by allowing them to interact within case scenarios and virtual wards, as well as with patients, colleagues, and relatives. To mimic real-life encounters, the student can take a patient's history and physical exam, investigate, diagnose, and provide treatment. The simulated patient can express emotions, concerns, and signs of a poor state of health. All these factors play into a healthcare provider's competency to think critically and clinically in decision-making. This practice is now being used in many surgical programs and medical education curricula. The use of simulation in VR is continuously being proven to decrease injury, increase operation speed, and improve overall outcomes in patient-centered care. VR simulation differs from in-person simulation training in that the VR modality of learning is more accessible and replicable than the latter. By comparing research studies and reviews of medical programs that incorporated VR into their curricula, we were able to assess the state of VR in medical education and where this technology could lead to future implementation in medical programs. Our review aimed to give insight into the existing evidence, the gaps in the use of VR in medical education, and the potential benefits this modality of learning can have going forward in this field of study. Medical students have demonstrated significantly enhanced knowledge gain when using immersive interactive VR over screen-based learning. Given the improvements in students' performance due to these dynamic and collaborative learning experiences, immersive VR training will become a standard in the development of clinical skills and ensure patient safety. Although the emphasis on empathy began later in the journey of gaining VR as a part of medical education, there is a need to gain those skills as early as possible in medical school. Implementing the use of VR as a supplement in medical education allows students to practice simulated patient encounters along with an array of different academic endeavors. By doing so, students will gain competency and confidence as they encounter patients during their clinical rotations and clinical practice.

Clinical and Demographic Characteristics of Families Attending the Epilepsy, Neuromuscular, and Child Wellbeing Clinics

Background Neurological diseases entail a broad spectrum of disorders. Among such ailments are epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders which impose a substantial burden on children and their families. Ensuring adequate access to outpatient services is crucial for these children regardless of the subclinical specialty, and clinicians can better comprehend the caregivers' perspectives by being aware of their backgrounds which can be aided using epidemiological studies. Methods In June 2023, a cross-sectional study was carried out in pediatric neurology clinics at a tertiary care center. The study included all families with a child or more (14 years and younger) diagnosed with neurological disorders. The study adopted a three-section survey delivered to participants recruited using a non-probability sampling technique to achieve a 95% confidence interval with a 5% margin of error. Results A total of 821 families participated in this study. The mean age of respondents was 40.46±8.72 years. Of the affected children, there were 600 (73.08%) children following up with the general neurology and epilepsy clinics, 164 (19.98%) were following up with the neuromuscular disorders clinics, and 57 (6.94%) were following up with the neurogenetic clinics. Familial status had no association with the type of clinic the patient was following up with p=0.0054. Single respondents had a significantly higher prevalence of children with epilepsy (p<0.0001). Parents with a high school level of education or lower had a significantly greater prevalence of epilepsy clinic follow-ups (p=0.0048). Conclusion The findings of this study contribute to the assessment of prevalent neurological disorders in children and shed light on the family dynamics surrounding these conditions. Through statistical analysis, the study establishes connections between certain demographic and clinical traits and specific neurological disorders among pediatric patients and their families. The study emphasizes the importance of socio-economic and socio-clinical support in promoting child health in such cases. Similar research would offer a more accurate portrayal of the challenges faced by families in these circumstances.

Cognitive, Behavioral and Emotional Empathy in Pharmacy Students: Targeting Programs for Curriculum Modification

Introduction: Empathy is an essential trait for pharmacists and is recognized as a core competency that can be developed in the classroom. There is a growing body of data regarding levels of empathy in pharmacy students; however, these studies have not measured differences in behavioral, cognitive, and emotional empathy. The goal of this study was to parse the underlying components of empathy and correlate them to psychosocial attributes, with the overall goal of identifying curriculum modifications to enhance levels of empathy in pharmacy students.

Methods: IRB approval was obtained to measure empathy levels in pharmacy students attending Midwestern University. An online, anonymous survey administered through a secure website (REDCap) was used. This survey utilized the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (Medical Student version) and included questions regarding demographics and personality traits. Empathy questions were sub-divided into behavioral, cognitive, and emotional categories. Data are presented as mean ± SEM with significance set at P ≤ 0.05.

Results: Three hundred and four pharmacy students at Midwestern University participated in a fall survey with an overall response rate of 37%. The average empathy score was 110.4 ± 0.8 on a scale of 20–140; which is comparable to empathy scores found by Fjortoft et al. (2011) and Van Winkle et al. (2012b). Validating prior research, females scored significantly higher than males in empathy as well as behavioral, cognitive, and emotional subcomponents. For the entire population, emotional empathy was significantly higher than cognitive and behavioral empathy (P < 0.05). Furthermore, negative correlations to empathy were observed for self-serving behavior (R D 0.490, P < 0.001), medical authoritarianism (R D 0.428, P < 0.001), and experience of coercion (R D 0.344, P < 0.001).

Conclusion: Overall, empathy levels in pharmacy students are similar to prior studies with females scoring higher than males. Emotional empathy may play a greater role than cognitive and behavioral empathy in this group of students. Targeted programs that promote volunteerism and activities that foster responsiveness to patient needs may attenuate self-serving behavior and medical authoritarianism and, therefore, improve empathy levels in pharmacy students.
