Metal Complexes for Dye-Sensitized Photoelectrochemical Cells (DSPECs)

Since Mallouk's earliest contribution, dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DSPECs) have emerged as a promising class of photoelectrochemical devices capable of storing solar light into chemical bonds. This review primarily focuses on metal complexes outlining stabilization strategies and applications. The ubiquity and safety of water have made its splitting an extensively studied reaction; here, we present some examples from the outset to recent advancements. Additionally, alternative oxidative pathways like HX splitting and organic reactions mediated by a redox shuttle are discussed.

Analysis of the Composition of Bromide Anion Oxidation Products in Aqueous Solutions with Different pH via Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode Method

We measured the ring collection coefficient of bromide anion oxidation products in a neutral and slightly alkaline medium on a rotating ring-disk electrode (glassy carbon disk, platinum ring) varying the following parameters: disk electrode rotation velocity, sodium bromide concentration, pH of the medium (in the range of 6−12), anode current on the disk, and the electroreduction potential of the bromide anion oxidation products on the ring. The data obtained are presented via dependences of the cathode ring current on the disk current ratio vs. the ring electrode potential. The analysis of the results was carried out by comparing the experimental polarization curves of the ring electrode with the data of cyclic voltammetry in model solutions to determine the electrical activities of various bromine compounds in positive oxidation states. We claim that the RRDE method could be used to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on the electrooxidation of bromide ions in neutral and alkaline solutions. For the most effective regeneration of the spent oxidizer, the values of pH > 10 and moderate concentrations of NaBr should be used.

Optimization of Photocatalyst Excited- and Ground-State Reduction Potentials for Dye-Sensitized HBr Splitting

Dye-sensitized bromide oxidation was investigated using a series of four ruthenium polypyridyl photocatalysts anchored to SnO₂/TiO₂ core/shell mesoporous thin films through 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diphosphonic acid anchoring groups. The ground- and excited-state reduction potentials were tuned over 500 mV by the introduction of electron withdrawing groups in the 4 and 4' positions of the ancillary bipyridine ligands. Upon light excitation of the surface-bound photocatalysts, excited-state electron injection yielded an oxidized photocatalyst that was regenerated through bromide oxidation. High injection quantum yields (Φ_inj) and regeneration quantum yields (Φ_reg) were essential to obtain efficient bromide oxidation yet required a photocatalyst that is both a potent photoreductant and a strong oxidant after excited-state injection. The four photocatalysts utilized in this manuscript ranged from unity Φ_inj (1.0) and minimal Φ_reg (0.037) to minimal Φ_inj (0.09) and unity Φ_reg (1.0). The photocatalyst that displayed the highest overall dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell performances exhibited near unity Φ_reg (0.99), while a significant Φ_inj was still preserved (0.59). Thus, these results highlighted the delicate interplay between the ground- and excited-state reduction potentials of photocatalysts for dye-sensitized hydrobromic acid splitting.
