Modeling of NO mass transfer characteristics absorbed in sodium persulfate solution with a bubble reactor

Sodium persulfate solution is considered as an effective wet denitrification medium, however, it is unclear that the influence of the operating conditions on mass transfer characteristics parameters during the absorption of NO with sodium persulfate solution. To determine the key mass transfer characteristics parameters, the specific interfacial area a and the mass transfer coefficients kL,  kG, were determined based on the Danckwerts method during CO₂ absorption in a bubble column. kL, kG  and a were calculated by correlations between the mass transfer coefficients of NO and CO₂. Results showed that the specific interfacial area increased 77.64 m^-1, the liquid phase mass transfer coefficient increased 2.49 × 10^-4 m·s^-1, and the gas phase mass transfer coefficient increased 0.71 × 10^-5mol·Pa^-1·s^-1·m^-2 with superficial gas velocity increasing from 0.6 to 1.4 L·min^-1. With the temperature of sodium persulfate solution increasing from 293 to 333 K, the specific interfacial area decreased 42.66 m^-1, while the liquid phase mass transfer coefficient and the gas phase mass transfer coefficient increased 3.89 × 10^-4 m·s^-1 and 1.18 × 10^-5mol·Pa^-1·s^-1·m^-2, respectively. The experiments results determined the correlations of a, kL, and kG  with the temperature of the absorption phase and the superficial velocity of the gas. It can serve as a guide to the enhancement of the sodium persulfate wet denitrification process.

A Novel Approach of Bioesters Synthesis through Different Technologies by Highlighting the Lowest Energetic Consumption One

Fatty acids esters have a wide application as bioplasticizers and biolubricants in different industries, obtained mainly in classic batch reactors, through an equilibrium complex reaction, that involves high temperatures, long reaction times, vigorously stirring, and much energy consumption. To overcome these shortcomings, we synthesized a series of fatty acid esters (soybean oil fatty acids being the acid components with various hydroxyl compounds) through novel low energy consumption technologies using a bubble column reactor, a microwave field reactor and for comparison meaning, a classic batch reactor. The obtained bioesters physicochemical properties were similar to one another, a good concordance among their rheological properties was obtained, but the energetic consumption is lower when using the bubble column or the microwave reactors instead of the classical batch reactor.

Synergistically applying 1-D modeling and CFD for designing industrial scale bubble column syngas bioreactors

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and future perspectives of circular economy ask for new solutions to produce commodities and fine chemicals. Large-scale bubble columns operated by gaseous substrates such as CO, CO2, and H2 to feed acetogens for product formations could be promising approaches. Valid in silico predictions of large-scale performance are needed to dimension bioreactors properly taking into account biological constraints, too. This contribution deals with the trade-off between sophisticated spatiotemporally resolved large-scale simulations using computationally intensive Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange approaches and coarse-grained 1-D models enabling fast performance evaluations. It is shown that proper consideration of gas hold-up is key to predict biological performance. Intrinsic bias of 1-D models can be compensated by reconsideration of Sauter diameters derived from uniquely performed Euler-Lagrange computational fluid dynamics.

Biodegradation of airborne acetone/styrene mixtures in a bubble column reactor

The ability of a bubble column reactor (BCR) to biodegrade a mixture of styrene and acetone vapors was evaluated to determine the factors limiting the process efficiency, with a particular emphasis on the presence of degradation intermediates and oxygen levels. The results obtained under varied loadings and ratios were matched with the dissolved oxygen levels and kinetics of oxygen mass transfer, which was assessed by determination of k_La coefficients. A 1.5-L laboratory-scale BCR was operated under a constant air flow of 1.0 L.min^-1, using a defined mixed microbial population as a biocatalyst. Maximum values of elimination capacities/maximum overall specific degradation rates of 75.5 gC.m^-3.h^-1/0.197 gC.gdw^-1.h^-1, 66.0 gC.m^-3.h^-1/0.059 gC.gdw^-1.h^-1, and 45.8 gC.m^-3.h^-1/0.027 gC.gdw^-1.h^-1 were observed for styrene/acetone 2:1, styrene-rich and acetone-rich mixtures, respectively, indicating significant substrate interactions and rate limitation by biological factors. The BCR removed both acetone and styrene near-quantitatively up to a relatively high organic load of 50 g.m^-3.h^-1. From this point, the removal efficiencies declined under increasing loading rates, accompanied by a significant drop in the dissolved oxygen concentration, showing a process transition to oxygen-limited conditions. However, the relatively efficient pollutant removal from air continued, due to significant oxygen mass transfer, up to a threshold loading rate when the accumulation of acetone and degradation intermediates in the aqueous medium became significant. These observations demonstrate that oxygen availability is the limiting factor for efficient pollutant degradation and that accumulation of intermediates may serve as an indicator of oxygen limitation. Microbial (activated sludge) analyses revealed the presence of amoebae and active nematodes that were not affected by variations in operational conditions.

Comparison of cutting-oil emulsion treatment by electrocoagulation-flotation in bubble column and airlift reactors

Separation of nanoscale oil droplets in the cutting-oil emulsion by electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) was carried out in a bubble column reactor (BCR) and an external-loop airlift reactor (ALR). Under the batch operation, aluminium electrode provided the highest efficiency of 99% and required the shortest separating time compared to iron and graphite electrodes. The separation performance was also affected by the electrode gap and current density due to the amount of produced aluminium ions and turbulence by bubble motions. Additionally, the ECF efficiency obtained from the ALR was similar to that of the BCR. However, the ALR was preferable owing to its lower energy consumption, less electrode sacrifice, and less sludge production. Similar results were acquired under the continuous mode; nevertheless, the highest efficiency of only 85% was achieved from both reactors. It was found that the efficiency declined with increasing flow rates. According to the results suggested by the residence time distribution (RTD), the ALR was more effective at higher flow rates since the plug flow condition can be retained. On the other hand, an increase in flow rate also provoked the bypass flow to the down-comer of the ALR, resulting in the presence of a dead zone and reduction in the treatment efficiency.
