Evolution in Casting Techniques: A Narrative Review of Casting Methods, Techniques, and Innovation

Orthopedic casting has seen a remarkable evolution from ancient practices to cutting-edge innovations. Beginning with ancient Egyptian methods employing bark, linen, and bandages, casting techniques have progressed through historical milestones, including the adoption of plaster of Paris in the 19th century and the introduction of synthetic materials like fiberglass and thermoplastics in the 20th century. Historical progressions transitioned from primitive materials to more sophisticated techniques, such as resin-soaked bandages and starch-based casts. While thermoplastics showcased benefits like adjustability and comfort, widespread adoption faced hurdles due to cost and water resistance limitations. The emergence of 3D printing introduced patient-specific casts with improved ventilation but faced challenges in accessibility, cost, and immediate immobilization. Natural Antimicrobials as Additives for Edible Food Packaging Applications: A Review

Edible packaging is a swiftly emerging art of science in which edible biopolymers like lipids, polysaccharides, proteins, resins, etc., and other consumable constituents extracted from various non-conventional sources are used alone or imbibed together. Edible packaging with antimicrobial components had led to the development of the hypothesis of active packaging which safeguards the quality of foods as well as health of consumers. Natural antimicrobial agents (NAMAs) like essential oils from spices, bioactive compounds derived from vegetables and fruits, animal and microorganism derived compounds having antimicrobial properties can be potentially used in edible films as superior replcement for synthetic compounds, thus serving the purpose of quality and heath. Most of the natural antimicrobial agents enjoy GRAS status and are safer than their synthetic counterparts. This review focuses on updated literature on the sources, properties and potential applications of NAMAs in the food industry. This review also analyzes the biodegradability and biocompatibility and edibility properties of NAMAs enriched films and it can be concluded that NAMAs are better substitutes but affect the organoleptic as well as the mechanical properties of the films. Despite many advantages, the inclusion of NAMAs into the films needs to be investigated more to quantify the inhibitory concentration without affecting the properties of films and exerting potential antimicrobial action to ensure food safety.

An Advanced TiAl Alloy for High-Performance Racing Applications

Requirements and strict regulations for high-performance racing applications involve the use of new and innovative lightweight structural materials. Therefore, intermetallic γ-TiAl-based alloys enable new opportunities in the field due to their lower density compared to commonly used Ni-base superalloys. In this study, a β-solidifying TiAl alloy was examined toward its use as structural material for inlet and outlet valves. The nominal composition of the investigated TNM alloy is Ti–43.5Al–4Nb–1Mo–0.1B (in at%), which enables an excellent formability at elevated temperatures due to the presence of bcc β-phase. Different hot-extrusion tests on an industrial scale were conducted on the cast and hot isostatic pressed material to determine the ideal microstructure for the respective racing application. To simulate these operation conditions, hot tensile tests, as well as rotational bending tests, at room temperature were conducted. With a higher degree of deformation, an increasing strength and fatigue limit was obtained, as well as a significant increment of ductility. The fracture surfaces of the rotational bending test specimens were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, revealing the relationship between crack initiation and microstructural constituents. The results of this study show that the mechanical performance of extruded TiAl material can be tailored via optimizing the degree of hot-extrusion.
