Prepandemic Predictors of Medication Adherence and HIV Viral Load During the First Year of COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Studies have reported significant immediate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the social relationships and health care of people living with HIV. This study followed a closed cohort of young people living with HIV over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were men and women (N = 140) age 36 years and younger who were living with HIV and had demonstrated suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy, unsuppressed HIV viral load, or active substance use in a run-in study. The results confirmed that participants continued to experience significant disruptions to their social relationships and health care over the course of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. There was evidence for sustained impacts on transportation, housing stability, and food security during the first year of COVID-19. Multivariable models showed that greater pre-COVID-19 social support predicted greater antiretroviral therapy adherence and greater HIV suppression (lower viral load) over the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts to plan and prepare people living with HIV for future social crises, including future pandemics, should emphasize building and sustaining social support.

COVID-19 and its impact on tourism sectors: implications for green economic recovery

The COVID-19 pandemic posed huge hurdles to green economic recovery and the tourism sector. This paper examines challenges in the Zhejiang, Fujian, and Shandong provinces of China' coastal tourism and green economic growth in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. To assess this impact, the study used econometrics models based on the Chinese provincial data from March 2020 to April 2021. According to the results, coastal tourism's related income fell drastically regardless of where the people live. Fisherman's earnings dropped by 26%, while captains and owner's earnings dropped by 49% on average. This also resulted in a shortage of food supply that endangered food security. During the pandemic, the number and duration of tourism trips dropped in all study locations. In addition, results indicated that in the wake of COVID-19, lower economic growth and recessions resulted in a significant decline in green investments. The paper proposes that to achieve green recovery and the recovery of the tourism sector, the local and central governments need to increase green investments and the literacy of the people in charge of coastal tourism.

The Brazilian financial market reaction to COVID-19: A wavelet analysis

We study the Brazilian stock market response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the COVID-19 data from January 22, 2020, to August 31, 2021, and a daily dataset comprised of the Bovespa index - the main performance indicator of the stocks in the Brazilian capital market -, its sector components, and COVID-19 cases and deaths in the most affected countries, we employ the wavelet tools of partial coherences, partial phase differences, dissimilarities, and VaR ratio. We find significant partial coherence spots, decrease in dissimilarity, and increase in VaR ratio suggesting the Brazilian stock market responded forcefully to COVID-19 local and international data and that this response varies over time and frequencies being modulated by the local stage of outbreak. The results also suggest a higher response to deaths data and that both market wide response and the sector contagion are more evident on longer term frequencies.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on electric energy load and pricing in the Iberian electricity market

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has established itself has one of the biggest health crises facing humanity. Countries all around the world were forced to adopt unprecedented restrictive measures in order to halt the spread of the virus and safeguard public health. These measures have profoundly changed the way of life and severely affected practically all sectors of activity, with major demand and supply shocks, leading to one of the largest recessions in world history. An essential pillar to the proper functioning of modern societies is energy security, particularly electricity security, which guarantees a reliable and efficient supply of electricity. Energy distributors and utility companies remained operational during mandatory stay-at-home orders, to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Given the relevant role of energy in society, this work will study the consequences of the economic shutdown on the Iberian electricity market, and discuss the timeline of events, the macroeconomic outlook, the financial status of the major electric utility companies (prior to being hit by the COVID-19 health pandemic), the changes in load profile, the generation mix and, finally, the electricity market spot prices.
