Human papillomavirus type 94-associated flat warts and review of reported cases

To date, 10 types of human papillomavirus have been identified that cause flat warts, including human papillomavirus type 3, which belongs to species group 2 of the genus alpha papillomavirus. Among these 10 types, human papillomavirus type 94 is most closely related to human papillomavirus type 10, sharing 86% homology. In this study, we conducted polymerase chain reaction analysis with sequencing on samples obtained from cutaneous lesions located on the face and lower legs of an individual, revealing the presence of human papillomavirus type 94. Dermatoscopic findings revealed numerous dotted vessels within one group of macular brown lesions located on the lower leg, which contributed to the diagnosis of flat warts. An online search revealed that human papillomavirus type 94 has previously been detected in various skin diseases, and we provide a review of prior reports.

Development of Flat Warts on the Cheeks after BioNTech-Pfizer BNT162b2 Vaccine: Is There a Correlation?

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected health systems across the globe, making the use of vaccines more urgent and topical than ever. Since the first months after the introduction of vaccinations, several reactions, both local and systemic, have been reported although they were mostly very mild and only rarely harbingers of more serious complications. We present a case of multiple flat warts onset over the cheeks in a patient after the second dose of mRNA BioNTech-Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine, and we discuss the possible temporal association between the two events, also considering the patient's antibody status.

HPV Vaccination Status and Resolution of Warts in Pediatric Patients

Background:

Warts are a common dermatologic complaint with an increased incidence within the pediatric population. Warts are caused by multiple strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). There is little research on how a patient's HPV immunization status affects the response to treatment of warts in pediatric patients.

Aims:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between HPV vaccination status and wart resolution.

Materials and Methods:

This is a retrospective chart review that investigates the relationship between response to routine treatment of warts and a subject's HPV vaccination status.

Results:

There was no significant relationship found between HPV vaccination status and resolution of warts (p = 0.797). However, there was a significant positive correlation between having the HPV vaccine and number of visits for the treatment of warts (r = 0.180, P = 0.024).

Conclusion:

This study did not show a significant correlation between HPV vaccination status and wart resolution, although it demonstrated a significant positive relationship between those immunized with the HPV vaccine and an increased number of treatment visits. Possible explanations for this unexpected correlation include the variation in HPV vaccine formulation, vaccination status, and frequency of office visits, since vaccinated patients are more likely to be compliant with office visits.

Resolution of diffuse facial verruca plana following nonavalent human papillomavirus immunization

Treatment of verruca plana is often challenging, and multiple treatment modalities, both pharmacologic and destructive, are frequently necessary to clear lesions. We report a case of a 16-year-old girl with a 2-year history of extensive verruca plana of the forehead, temples, and upper periorbital skin, recalcitrant to monotherapy with topical tretinoin cream, that completely resolved following first dose of nonavalent human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization.

Verruca plana as a complication of CO2 laser treatment: a case report

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser treatment is a common therapeutic modality for many dermatologic conditions. It uses a high energy, infrared beam of light, which selectively targets water-containing tissue resulting in controlled ablative resurfacing. This modality, however, can manifest significant cosmetic side effects. Here we report a case of verruca plana manifesting as a response to CO2 laser treatment. A 74-year-old female with recent Mohs surgery for a basal cell carcinoma, presented for full-face-fractionated CO2 treatment to address her surgical scars in addition to treating her mild diffuse actinic damage. Six weeks post treatment, the patient developed erythematous thin plaques over the areas that had been treated. Histology was consistent with verruca plana. Lesions showed mild improvement with topical tretinoin. Verruca plana are benign and typically self-limited; however, they can present a significant cosmetic burden to patients and are an important complication to consider when performing elective cosmetic procedures.
