Nanolasers Incorporating CoxGa0.6-xZnSe0.4 Nanoparticle Arrays with Wavelength Tunability at Room Temperature

Semiconductor nanolaser has important research value and wide applications in many fields. However, it is still a challenge to obtain a nanolaser with tunability and high intensity at the nanoscale. Here, we report on lasers with two modes of emission wavelengths operating in near-infrared of nanohole filled with Co_xGa_0.6-xZnSe_0.4 nanoparticle arrays at room temperature. The nanohole arrays are drawn on the photoresist by using the method of three-beam laser interferometric etching. Graphene with graphite which is coated on nanohole arrays is conducted by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to construct the cavity. The Co_xGa_0.6-xZnSe_0.4 nanoparticles are filled into the nanohole acting laser gain medium via the magnetic traction nanofilling technology. The results show that the laser at 868 and 903 nm is radiated, which can be tuned by changing the concentration and position of the filled nanoparticles in terms of wavelength and intensity. The nanolasers based on this approach represent an advantageous alternative to other design and fabrication methods. This nanoparticle nanolasers can be used in a micronano light source of an intelligent photonic chip.

Photonic Multishells Composed of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Designed by Controlled Phase Separation in Emulsion Drops

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), also known as chiral nematic LCs, show a photonic stopband, which is promising for various optical applications. In particular, CLCs confined in microcompartments are useful for sensing, lasing, and optical barcoding at the microscale. The integration of distinct CLCs into single microstructures can provide advanced functionality. In this work, CLC multishells with multiple stopbands are created by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in a simple yet highly controlled manner. A homogeneous ternary mixture of LC, hydrophilic liquid, and co-solvent is microfluidically emulsified to form uniform oil-in-water drops, which undergo LLPS to form onion-like drops composed of alternating CLC-rich and CLC-depleted layers. The multiplicity is controlled from one to five by adjusting the initial composition of the ternary mixture, which dictates the number of consecutive steps of LLPS. Interestingly, the concentration of the chiral dopant becomes reduced from the outermost to the innermost CLC drop due to uneven partitioning during LLPS, which results in multiple stopbands. Therefore, the photonic multishells show multiple structural colors. In addition, dye-doped multishells provide band-edge lasing at two different wavelengths. This new class of photonic multishells will provide new opportunities for advanced optical applications.

Controlling light's helicity at the source: orbital angular momentum states from lasers

Optical modes that carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) are routinely produced external to the laser cavity and have found a variety of applications, thus increasing the demand for integrated solutions for their production. Yet such modes are notoriously difficult to produce from lasers due to the strict symmetry requirements for their creation, together with the need to break the degeneracy in helicity. Here, we review the progress made since 1992 in producing such twisted light modes directly at the source, from gas to solid-state lasers, bulk to integrated on-chip solutions, through to generic devices for on-demand OAM in both scalar and vector forms.This article is part of the themed issue 'Optical orbital angular momentum'.
