The impact of job stress on perceived professional benefits among Chinese nurses caring for patients with gynecological cancer: mediating effects of perceived social support and self-efficacy

Introduction

Nurses caring for patients with gynecological cancer experience significant job stress, which adversely impacts their mental health. Previous studies have indicated that perceived professional benefits serves as a protective factor for nurses' mental health, and factors such as job stress, perceived social support and self-efficacy influence their perceived professional benefits. However, the relationships between these factors and the associated mechanisms have remained incompletely understood. This study explored the role of perceived social support and self-efficacy in job stress and perceived professional benefits among nurses caring for patients with gynecological cancer.

Methods

During June and July 2023, an investigation was conducted in Anhui Province. The Nurse Job Stressors Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, Nurses' Perceived Professional Benefits Questionnaire and General Self-Efficacy Scale were administered to 311 nurses caring for patients with gynecological cancer. A chained-mediated effect model was constructed and validated.

Results

Job stress negatively affected nurses' perceived professional benefits. Perceived social support was a mediator in job stress and nurses' perceived professional benefits, with a mediating effect value of -0.093. Additionally, perceived social support and self-efficacy functioned as sequential mediators in this relationship, with a mediating effect value of -0.032.

Conclusion

This study unveils the influencing mechanisms of job stress on perceived professional benefits of nurses caring for patients with gynecological cancer. It is essential for nursing managers to alleviate nurses' job stress, provide sufficient and effective social support and improve their self-efficacy, ultimately enhancing their perceived professional benefits.

The impact of mindfulness on nurses' perceived professional benefits: the mediating roles of workplace spirituality and work-life balance

This study delves into the effects of mindfulness on workplace spirituality, work-life balance, and perceived professional benefits among nurses operating in the high-pressure environments of hospitals in Jiangxi Province, China. Utilizing a robust sample of 303 valid questionnaires and employing partial least squares (PLS) analysis, the research uncovers a significant positive relationship between mindfulness and workplace spirituality. Furthermore, it demonstrates how both workplace spirituality and work-life balance serve as crucial mediators in enhancing nurses' perception of their professional benefits. The findings illuminate the potential of mindfulness training in substantially elevating job satisfaction and reducing burnout among nurses. The study not only reinforces the value of mindfulness in the healthcare sector but also advocates for its integration into professional development programs and healthcare policies. By doing so, it aims to bolster the overall wellbeing and professional effectiveness of nurses facing the myriad challenges inherent in demanding healthcare environments. This study contributes to the growing discourse on mindfulness in occupational settings, highlighting its pivotal role in enhancing both the personal wellbeing and professional capabilities of healthcare professionals.

Factors associated with professional identity among ICU nurses during COVID-19: A cross-sectional study

AIM

To determine the associated factors of professional identity among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

DESIGN

Multicentre cross-sectional study.

METHODS

This study invited 348 ICU nurses in five hospitals in China from May to July 2020. Online self-report questionnaires were adopted to collect their demographic and occupational characteristics, perceived professional benefits and professional identity. Based on univariate and multiple linear regression analysis, a path analysis was performed to determine the associated factors' effects on professional identity.

RESULTS

The mean score of professional identity was 102.38 ± 16.46. Perceived professional benefits, doctor recognition level and family support level were associated with ICU nurses' professional identity. The path analysis revealed that perceived professional benefits and doctor recognition level had direct effects on professional identity. In addition, doctor recognition level and family support level had indirect effects on professional identity through the mediation of perceived professional benefits.

Nurses' sense of organizational support, Self-esteem and perceived professional benefits: A mediating model

AIM

To explore the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between perceived organizational support and professional benefits among Registered Nurses in China.

DESIGN

This was an online, cross-sectional study involving 1850 nurses from six hospitals in China.

METHODS

Data were collected using a 4-part questionnaire including a sociodemographic questionnaire, perceived organizational support scale, self-esteem scale and brief nurses' perceived professional benefits questionnaire from September to November 2021. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to explore the associations among them.

RESULTS

Perceived organizational support was positively correlated with self-esteem and perceived professional benefits among nurses, whereas self-esteem positively predicted nurses' perceived professional benefits . Self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between the two variables. The ratio of the mediating effect to the total effect was 16.7%.

Perceived professional benefits and associated factors among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study

AIMS

To examine the perceived professional benefits (PPB) and associated factors among nurses during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in China.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

METHODS

Using the snowball sampling method, 492 nurses (478 females, 14 males) were recruited. Data were collected using an online survey, including participants' socio-demographic and working characteristics, psychological distress related to the COVID-19 pandemic, dealing with professional frustration, professional self-reflection and PPB from 1-30 April 2020.

RESULTS

Nurses experienced high levels of PPB. In linear regression analysis, self-perceived concerns about COVID-19, emotional shock caused by it, risk perception towards their occupations, dealing with professional frustration and professional self-reflection were positively associated with PPB among nurses. These factors explained 84% variance in PPB.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlighted that although the nurses experienced psychological distress, they gained high PPB during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, to facilitate nurses' efforts to achieve professional growth, more educational resources and opportunities for engaging in reflective practices could be provided.

The relationship between resilience and intent to stay among Chinese nurses to support Wuhan in managing COVID-19: The serial mediation effect of post-traumatic growth and perceived professional benefits

Aim

To explore the mediating role of post‐traumatic growth and perceived professional benefits between resilience and intent to stay among Chinese nurses to support Wuhan in managing COVID‐19.

Design

A cross‐sectional questionnaire survey.

Methods

In May 2020, the study recruited a convenience sample of 200 Chinese nurses to support Wuhan in managing COVID‐19. A set of self‐rating questionnaires was used to measure resilience, post‐traumatic growth, perceived professional benefits and intent to stay. Structural equation modelling was performed with 5,000 bootstrap samples using AMOS 23.0.

Results

The final model provided a good fit for the data. Resilience had the strongest direct effect on intent to stay. Perceived professional benefits partially mediated the association between resilience and intent to stay. Overall, the serial multiple mediations of post‐traumatic growth and perceived professional benefits in the relationship between resilience and intent to stay was statistically significant.

Can social support enhance sense of coherence and perceived professional benefits among Chinese registered nurses? A mediation model

AIM

To investigate the mediation role of social support in the relationship between a sense of coherence and the perception of professional interests among Chinese registered nurses.

BACKGROUND

Job burnout is become exceedingly common among registered nurses. Perceived professional benefits and a sense of coherence can help regulate nurses' negative emotions, reduce job burnout and turnover intention and increase nurses' subjective well-being. However, little is known about the mediating effect of social support on sense of coherence and perceived professional benefits.

METHODS

From May to August 2017, data from 765 Chinese registered nurses were collected from a 4-part questionnaire: general information, the sense of coherence scale, social support rating scale and perceived professional benefits questionnaire. The independent factors of perceived professional benefits were tested by multiple regression analysis. Structural equation model was used to study the moderating effect of social support.

RESULTS

The mean perceived professional benefits score differed across professional title (p < .001). Social support mediated 58% of the relationships between a sense of coherence and perceived professional benefits.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, our study revealed that social support partially mediates the relationship between a sense of coherence and perceived professional benefits among Chinese registered nurses. Therefore, interventions based on social support to enhance the sense of coherence and to strengthen nurses' perceived professional benefits should be developed.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Nursing managers should create more learning opportunities to improve nurses' abilities in clinical nursing and the social support of nurses through many ways, so as to enhance nurses' sense of coherence and nurses' perceived professional benefits.
